He attended and graduated from the U.S. Army Ranger School, one of the toughest leadership schools in the military. As for his basic training, James Earl Jones completed Infantry Basic Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. After his training and completion of Ranger School, he served in the military during the Korean War era, though he did not see combat.
