Not bad at all... what's the M1/M2 button for?

 

Didn't view the video, but in my F10 M5, the M1 and M2 are different user programmable driving modes.

 

You can set either of them to be the more aggressive one, although by convention, usually M2 is the more aggressive setting.

 

My settings (if memory serves) were:

 

Normal: for usual Singapore street driving:

 

Engine: Efficient

Suspension: Comfort

Steering: Comfort

Shifting: D1 (auto, mildest shift setting)

HUD: normal

 

M1: for aggressive Singapore street driving:

 

Engine: Sport Plus

Suspension: Sport

Steering: Sport

Shifting: D3 (auto, most aggressive shift setting)

HUD: normal

 

M2: for track/Malaysian highway and B road driving:

 

Engine: Sport Plus

Suspension: Sport Plus (sometimes I dial this down to Sport or even Comfort for bumpy B roads using the buttons on the centre next to the gear lever)

Steering: Sport Plus

Shifting: M3 (manual, most aggressive shift setting)

HUD: M mode (rev counter and shift indicator)

It's been about 1.5 years since I sold the M5, I think I might have named some of the modes wrong. E.g. the manual shift mode was S3 not M3 (too late to edit now - I was confusing it with how my current watered-down M140i names these modes). And I didn't mention the traction modes - I generally tended to leave full traction on for any public road driving. MDM only for the track. Never had the balls to try full off with my own car (I do this only when I do driver improvement programmes with BMW fleet cars lol).

Thanks Turboflat 4. I will be looking forward to clocking 2000km, get the engine, front and rear differential oils changed, bring up the revs progressively before giving a proper review. Will most probably be doing an amateur photoshoot first.

 

I ordered the eventuri intake kit and also considering the KW HAS kit to lower the car properly.

 

After looking at many reviews on the comp package, it would seem the comp would be the proper M5 in my opinion especially if one looks at the occasional track duty from time to time.

 

The 4WD looks to be a game changer in terms of traction and track timings. I know many purists frown at M utilising 4wd but with ever increasingly more powerful powerplants, the change to 4wd seems inevitable. 

 

Lately, a few close friends got to know that I am changing to the M5 comp, inevitably and understandably a few questioned my rationale at spending such money on a BMW 4 door sedan rather than maybe a Porsche Panamera 4S. When I was not in the financial position to consider such a car, I would also question the rationale of such a decision, after driving a friend's F90 non comp, I was blown away. It is a special car compared to the Panamera which I also had a brief drive not too long ago. Unless I am able to comfortably afford a Panamera Turbo, to me, getting the M5 Comp is a no brainer. Badge aside, the M5 Comp is highly capable at this price point. It is a Supercar in modern standards with all the bells & whistles and yet the practicality of a 4 door. I can't yet afford a Exotic at this moment so maybe the M5 is attractive to me at this point of my life but I am confident this car will exceed my expectations.

 

I would be sharing more insights once I take delivery which is expected by mid may.

Nice writeup. And you made the right choice. I don't mean to offend anyone out there, but if you buy a newer Porsche model other than a 911, a boxster or a cayman, you really need to ask yourself why you're buying a "Porsche".

 

(I did have a 911 years back lol. In fact there have been a couple in the family).

Thanks Turboflat4. I agree with you on that. The Porsche which really catches my eye is that of the GT3 RS. The History and DNA of this car is so rich, it is indeed a special car to me, especially when you first get in and fire up the fabulous flat 6, the feeling is magical so to speak. Now thats a porsche I would love to own and drive on a frequent basis.

 

Anyway now I'm just counting down to take delivery of my new car. Have a few things lined up upon delivery for paint protection and other items before I can enjoy driving it. Will be posting some photos and a more detailed write up once the car has done the 2000km run in service. Thats when the performance mods start going in.

Haha I guess they are concerned about how I am spending my money and they hope I can spend it on something more value for money.

 

Yes, I'm spending it on what I have always desired. Its like my holy grail.

 

Thanks Douglam! I hope I will like it as I have not yet seen a comp in the flesh let alone driven it. No demo models available for test drive from what I was told. Many differing opinions from the many online reviews, I thought heck, since I am already spending this amount of money, I might as well get the best spec. Looking forward to delivery.
