Acrylamide is formed when starchy foods are baked or fried at high temperatures and is considered a cancer-causing chemical by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.

 

If thats the case how about fries???

Calbee chip prices soar as stocks run out

 

 

TOKYO • Demand for potato chips has surged in Japan this week, with products on sale for six times their retail price online after Japanese snack company Calbee halted the sale of some of its most popular chip brands.

 

 

Calbee's pizza-flavored chips were going for about 1,250 yen (S$16) on Yahoo Japan's auction website yesterday. One bag usually sells for less than 200 yen.

 

Photos of near-empty shelves at local supermarkets were trending on Twitter.

 

The crunch came after Calbee on Monday said it will temporarily halt the sale of 15 types of potato chips due to a bad crop in Hokkaido, a key potato-producing region. The northern island was hit by a record number of typhoons last year.

 

Calbee, which has a market value of 507.9 billion yen and is 20 per cent owned by PepsiCo, has a 73 per cent market share of potato chips. 

 
 

Potato chips are a big deal in Japan, a country also known for its senbei rice crackers and Pocky sticks. Potato snack products by Calbee made up the top two most popular snacks in a TV Asahi poll of 10,000 people and 13 confectionery makers last year.

For the country known for longevity, they are big on snacks. Maybe our should add chips into our diet. ,

I prefer the 'Jack & Jill' potatoes chip.

Especially the salsa chili. Just got one big pack yesterday.

Jack and Jill got nostalgia. Last time primary school can buy the small packets...

 

Do you guys find some brands make u have sore throat very easily?

 

The ntuc brand. Or Oregon brand.

More "healthier" version 'cos less oil to lubricate your throats and less salt to cool down. [laugh]

 

Due to less oil used, the chips are drier and tends to cause lesions when your swallow.

 

Salt is a miracle ingredient used in food (will make aweful food taste awesome), and liquid soap/shampoo (will cause very runny liquid soap to become vicious giving a sense of concentrated). But too much is no good.

I find these brands, including the Japanese ones always have burnt edges.

 

I haven't seen any badly burnt chips in Lays or Ruffles.

For me, it's a once a week snack only. Cannot eat everyday.

 

To make it slightly "healthier" I use my home made salsa dips. That has 0 sugar, 0 artificial flavouring and colouring.

I'm not a salsa person. Thought those apply more to those doritos?

Yes for Doritos and tortilla chips.

 

I use it for Potato chips too.

Add more flavour.

 

One mouthful with just chips another dip with salsa.

 

Down it with ice cold beer or chilled Riesling.

 

Ahhh......

on a side note, i always liked toasted bread with a bit of chao ta.

But my mum since young keep telling me it's cancer causing, so better dont jiak lol
