Local car clubs do their part to aid Singapore's foreign workers!

Here's a break from all the negativity surrounding the circuit breaker measures and our roads. A bunch of Singaporeans have joined hands to help donate 121 drums of surface sanitisers to 44 different foreign dormitories. According to Christopher Kwek's facebook post, many of these people who have donated are from our local car clubs, with a few private companies joining in the fun. With each drum holding 209 litres worth of sanitisers, the total cost of the donation amounted to an impressive $20,000. Curious which car clubs donated? Find you answers in the list below! -

Eng Yong Kit was set free after the trial as he had been detained long enough, local media reported. The court heard that on February 2, Kit forced his 24-year-old Vietnamese girlfriend into a hotel room on District 3’s Hai Ba Trung Street. He then locked the room and blocked the door with a bed to prevent others from rescuing her. Police and representatives of the Singaporean Consulate General in HCMC arrived at the hotel, but they failed to talk him into opening the door. Eight hours later, police had to use smoke grenades and break in to rescue the woman. Kit was arrested. He told the police that he met his girlfriend online and they started dating in June last year. When the woman, believed to be a sex worker, decided to break up with him, he did not take it well. The court said it handed down the lenient sentence because there were no serious consequences and the woman also requested to drop charges against him.

While unhappy SMRT bus drivers displayed their frustration by going on strike, a Serbian Fiat worker has his own way of showing unhappiness - by vandalising 31 unassembled Fiat 500L body shells. The worker scratched profanities and offensive messages aimed at the management of the plant on the cars' bodies . The trade unions commented that the workers had been forced to work long hours and had been denied of cigarette breaks. "It is believed that a single man damaged the cars because the message's handwriting is the same. This is probably due to tough conditions under which the workers operate, the younger ones can bear it but it is very difficult for the older ones. They work in three shifts, under great pressure from management, and the average monthly wage is 34,000 dinars," said Zoran Mihajlovic, President of Fiat Automobili Srbija's trade union. The damaged body shells were re-painted while an investigation has been launched to identify the worker involved.

The Straits Times reported that Tay Kok Eng, 56, was also sentenced to an additional six months for hiring the same worker, who was an illegal immigrant, from August 2009 to March 2010. Tay, the owner of Midas Maintenance and Services, also faced a $12,000 fine for failing to ensure the safety of his employee. The worker, Chelladurai Lenin, 47, was changing the ceiling lights of a condominium lobby located Seraya Road on Mar 30, 2010 when he met with an accident. He fell 2.8m from an unstable ladder and sustained injuries to his head and leg. Tay offered to send Lenin to the hospital but the latter refused as he not have a legal work permit. Tay drove him to a clinic in Tampines and Lenin started to lose consciousness. The doctor advised him to visit the hospital immediately. However, Tay called Lenin's friend, whose identity is unknown, and they brought him to a clinic in Hougang instead. At the clinic, the doctor also advised Tay to bring him to the hospital. On the journey to Changi, Lenin's friend dumped him on the pavement and called 995. Tay told the operator that they had found an injured man lying along Upper Changi Road East. Paramedics arrived and found the Indian national dead.

As an employer, I prize three qualities that make an employee invaluable: his attitude, skill sets and the cost of hiring him in relation to the economy. If an employee has these qualities, his employability is unlikely to be affected, even in a recession. Why would any company let such a standout employee go? Similarly, when it is an employee's market and when bosses seek to recruit more staff, their first offers would go to citizens who display great attitude, are of better quality and economically cost-competitive. I do not subscribe to discriminatory hirings and I do not think that such hirings are widespread. Companies exist for profits and if an employee displays these three qualities and is not hired because of discriminatory practices, it would only hurt the firm. My sense is that Singaporeans must improve their attitude towards work to remain employable. The image that sticks with the Singaporean worker is that he is choosy and tends to job-hop. He would leave a company for a pay rise of a few hundred dollars rather than stay and acquire the right skill sets and experience. Instant gratification, rather than patience and perseverance, is another drawback. Many Singaporean workers today have become soft and easily discouraged when things do not go their way. They should stop complaining and ask themselves objectively whether they can compete. We should examine whether we are still as hungry for success as our predecessors, and willing to work as hard and smart to remain competitive, instead of taking the easy way out by blaming the Government, which is doing an excellent job. We can remain employable only by having a great attitude, being of better quality and being more cost-competitive. Restrictions and quotas will not help the employability of citizens. Instead, they will make Singaporean workers more impatient for success, as well as soft and vulnerable in the long run. Alvin Teo

Straits Times Jun 29, 2011 Woman scratched SMRT worker By Elena Chong A WOMAN was found guilty yesterday of using criminal force on an SMRT station manager at a train station. Chinese national Wang Shu Jun, 35, a permanent resident, was convicted of scratching the hands of Ms Chua Hui Keng, 28, at the Serangoon MRT station, at about 11pm last Sept 10. The prosecution's case is that the station manager had stopped Wang and her six-year-old son at the lift for not paying the boy's train fare. When she asked Wang to follow her, the woman replied that she would return after taking her son to a friend waiting at a taxi stand. When Ms Chua refused, an argument broke out. She then snapped some photos of Wang, who tried to snatch the camera. In the midst of a struggle, Wang scratched the victim's hand and pulled the cord of her walkie-talkie. In her defence, Wang, who did not have a lawyer, demanded to know what right Ms Chua had to take her picture. She admitted it was her fault the child's fare had not been paid but denied using criminal force. District Judge Eugene Teo adjourned the case to July 12 for sentencing. The maximum penalty is three months' jail and up to $500 in fines.

Initially, the interim hospital bill from the National University Hospital indicated a subsidy. But when the final bill was given to me, I was shocked. The bill for my stay at a C-class ward amounted to an unsubsidised total of $147,000. I was discharged on Aug 13 last year and the reason for the difference between what was stated in the interim bill and the final one was not explained at all. Only after I asked was I told that the Ministry of Health had withdrawn the subsidy as the accident was work- related. About a month after my discharge, I applied for a waiver of the outstanding amount of about $122,000 through my MP. This was after my company had paid $25,000. As far as I am aware, the hospital did not reply to the appeal. Three months later, after more deductions from my MediShield ($41,000) and Medisave accounts ($31,000), I was informed that the hospital was in the process of scheduling an instalment payment plan for the remaining $50,000. Needless to say, my family and I are plagued by anxiety. I am 54 years old and work in the construction sector; my wife works part-time and my daughters are still in their teens. How can an average Singaporean worker like me support a family, pay off a huge hospital bill and still find more money to pay for subsequent medical requirements arising from the accident and treatment? If I had been given a subsidy, I would not have been burdened by this unexpectedly trying financial circumstances. Tan Guan Seng

1. Toyota has or almost overtaken GM as the world largest car producer. One of its 30 years old employee in Toyota city, who worked in QC department was found dead due to "overwork" much like the HP saga. His spouse wanted to seek compensation from Toyota but failed. She later sued Toyota in court and won. 2. This incident tells us 2 things: a) Toyota QC is not play play type and cause death somemore and b) Even big company like Toyota is stingy when coming to compensation (so much about Japanese style loyalty). Polis have informed that a raid was carried out in workers quaters at the Mandai area following public tipoff of a man believed to b Mas Selamat Kasteri, the wanted criminal who escaped last month from the Whitley Road Detention Center. The raid carried out at around 10pm involved teams of officers from SAF, SWAT, SCDF, Polis and Certis Cisco who surrounded 1 kilometer leading to the area, turning away all vehicles from entering the Neo Tiew Road. At 11.30pm, the team of SAF commandos and SWAT team entered the compound in 3 direction,taking control of the 4 blocks of worker's quaters. R. Torkoknathan one of the security guards at the compound was astounded by the appearence of these armed men and was one of the first few persons who were secured down. "I was shocked, they come so many of them. This is like a tamil movie" At midnight, the operation begin. Armed with submachine guns, the polis entered the3rd Storey level of one of the block where Kasteri was believed to be hiding. Gunshots were exchanged for the next 10 minutes. And soon the fighting was over. The polis quickly arrested 10 men in connection with the shooting. One polis officer was shot in the leg whilst entering the unit and Kasteri was said to have been shot at least several time. A polis spokemen told Strayed Times "This is just an April Fool Joke... you have been pwned" Neh Neh Neh Poo Poo.............

This is a very sad case that I would like to share with you'll. A China FT working for my gf's dad's company was knocked down by a lorry while cycling at night near his quarters. He had been cycling by the side of the road when a lorry's side mirror hit the back of his head causing him to fall and again hit his head hard against the curb. He was knocked unconscious with severe bleeding from the head. The lorry driver was responsible enough to stop and call for help. At the hospital, the China FT fell into a coma and the doctor said that he suffered serious brain damage and would most probably be disabled for life. His father and cousin has flown over here and only recently became conscious but isn't able to talk or move and lost his memory. He would be flown back to China soon via special arrangements. As for investigation by the TP, it is going nowhere as there is no witness. Although they are still investigating, I fear it may be futile. The TP cannot get the China FT's statement as he can't even talk or remember anything and he will be flown back China soon. The lorry driver claimed that he only hit him lightly and the China FT fell on his own and for info he has not visited the China FT once at the hospital. As for compensation and the cost, my gf's dad has kindly paid the hospital fees and the flight cost, 20k++ total, even though the incident happened outside working hours which does not make the company liable. Compensation cannot be claimed on the lorry driver's insurance as it has to be done by the victim and with the China FT's current state, impossible. Social services has also declined to sponsor anything which is a shame. My gf's dad has already done his best to help this worker, engaging a lawyer to sue for compensation would be costly and risky, plus he's is only a small company. Is there anything that can be done here? Just imagine the pain of his parents and he's their only son.
