  1. Singapore— Tan Chuan Jin, the country’s Speaker of the Parliament, gleefully took to Facebook on Sunday (Mar 15) about a “new word” i.e. “Singaporise,” posting two photos of screenshots of articles from the Financial Times (FT) and Business Insider, both of which use the word in a positive manner. Mr Tan added this caption, “New word?! Power lah SG! Variants: Singaporise (British spelling?) Singaporized Singaporizing Singaporization” The FT article is from Friday (March 13), and is entitled “The coronavirus: my part in its downfall,” written by Edward Luce. The writer, an American, says that his government would do well to copy what Singapore has done. Concerning the quarantine imposed on US citizens, he writes, “For how long will this tedious horror go on? That depends on the quality of public action and private behavior. If the US could Singaporize on both counts, we could be through the worst within a month. If we continue the record of the last few weeks — too late, too bureaucratic, and a White House in shambolic denial — it could get sharply worse over two or three months. The big lesson is that countries that act decisively and quickly are far better off than those who block their ears and hope it will go away.” Praise for how well Singapore (as well as Taiwan, Macau and even South Korea) have handled the onset of the coronavirus outbreak has abounded. Mr Tan’s other screenshot is from another article entitled “Georgia is Successfully ‘De-Sovietizing’ and ‘Singaporising’,” wherein the author, Simon Black, wrote about how Georgia was a bright spot in a time of economic gloom as it did away with antiquated business institutions in an effort to de-Sovietize and Singaporize. He wrote, “Living here is dirt cheap… and a lot of fun. The people are incredibly warm, and I’ve found that the younger generations which are on board with the ‘Singaporization of Georgia’ are incredibly sharp.” Netizen Wei Ting also posted the same screenshot from FT, tweeting on Sunday morning “To “Singapore” is now a verb: e.g. If the US could Singaporize Via @FT“.” The Speaker’s post seemed to spark joy in Singaporeans, who have shared it over 1,600 times and reacted to and commented on his post. One individual who commented said that he had been asked by a school in the US to “Singaporeanize” their math lessons. One proudly wrote that the definition of “Singaporeanize” is “to solve the problem.” Another netizen gave this definition: “Singaporise: according to Oxford Dictionary, it means do things efficiently and effectively, with citizens at heart.” Some said it should become the word of the year. Others pointed out that it’s hardly a new word. The Business Insider article is from 2012, after all. A quick Google search shows usage of the word from 2013, 2014 and 2017 as well

  7. Mum's the word on smarter children Published on Sep 21, 2011 Purchase this article for republication Buy SPH photos THE announcement of my engagement to a Caucasian surprised many who had accepted my status of being 'on the shelf' ('A PhD's fine, but what about love and babies?'; Sept 6). It is my PhD that is currently on the shelf as after more than 10 years as a full-time mother, it is almost impossible to return to academia. Many intelligent Singapore women will recognise this problem: most Singapore men are not inclined to marry women they consider to be cleverer. I remember the look of one man who chatted me up after I had made a witty remark at a lecture. When I told him I was (then) a master's degree student he - literally - turned away. Spot the difference: My husband (who holds a Bachelor of Science degree), tells people he is clever enough to have married me. Studies have shown consistently that a child's educational attainment correlates with that of his mother's. My son's IQ is significantly higher than that of either of his parents. (I am convinced that 11 months of breast-feeding also helped.) I might have opted out of a career where I could inspire many young people on to their own doctorates, but my son has also benefited much from our discussions on the scientific method, statistics in research, Descartes, splitting an infinitive (and atom), and so on. He is so far ahead of his cohort that he has skipped one year in Maths and is being 'extended' in other subjects within his normal classes. My points are:
  8. Hi all, I watched a talk show and the guests made some comments about Korean speaking English. Scenario One Jane asked the Hotel receptionist, "Where can I find a Copy Machine?". The receptionist replied her, "oh you can go to the restaurant and they have the machine". Jane thought the restaurant really have a copy machine but she was redirected back to the receptionist as there isn't a copy machine there. later, both realized whats going on then Jane asked the receptionist how do you say "Copy" and "Coffee". The receptionist said, "Coooo..pi" and "Cobbee". From here, they realized that almost all Korean really have difficulty pronouncing the "P/F". Scenario Two A male guest was fetched by a female counterpart (Kim) to a University in US. Since the University has restricted area for parking, Ms. Kim asked the car park attendant, "Can I f.u.c.k here?". The attendant looked at Ms. Kim with amusement! Since Ms. Kim asked the same questions repeatedly, the car park attendant had no choice but to replied, "You can f.u.c.k. anywhere here you like, I can't be bothered.". That guest was so embarrassed about the whole incident. Regards,

  15. A little boy goes to his dad and asks, 'What is Politics?' Dad says, 'Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I am the head of the family, so call me The President. Your mother is the administrator of the money, so we call her, the Government. We are here to take care of your needs, so we will call you, the People. The nanny, we will consider her, the Working Class. And your baby brother, we will call him, the Future. Now think about that and see if it makes sense.' So, the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. So, the little boy goes to his parent's room and finds his mother asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed. The next morning, the little boy say's to his father, 'Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now.' The father says, 'Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about.' 19. Think straight, because the 4-letter F-word is "FAST". ================================================================================ ==== By MARK RECHTIN | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 12/04/06, 8:01 am et "LOS ANGELES - Lexus will launch a performance brand in late 2007 to compete with Mercedes' AMG and BMW's M divisions. Lexus will start with an IS sedan equipped with a 425-hp, 5.0-liter V-8. The engine is a retuned version of the LS 600h L hybrid's engine, dealer sources said. The sedan will be called the IS-F. It will debut at the Detroit auto show in January. Lexus likely will carry that nomenclature into other high-performance Lexus vehicles, a dealer said. He said a GS-F sedan and IS-F coupe likely will follow. The IS-F - "F" as in "fast" - will go on sale in December 2007 and sticker in the low $50,000 range, sources said. Lexus told dealers of the plans at a recent national meeting. Toyota Motor Co. filed for a trademark for "IS-F" on Nov. 8 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It also filed for a trademark for a stylized "F" logo on Oct. 9. A dealer source said Yamaha is tuning the IS-F engine's heads for more power. Brembo will be the brake supplier. Lexus declined to comment. "
  20. Premature release: 2007 Honda CR-V debuts a bit early Posted Aug 26th 2006 1:31AM by John Neff Filed under: SUVs, Crossovers/CUVs, Honda AutoWeek decided to pull back the curtain early on the 2007 Honda CR-V and publish pictures and details of the new CUV that the automaker had placed on embargo until September 1st. We've seen this happen so many times before, and not just by small blogs and websites who don't know any better, but by big media outlets like AutoWeek, that at this point we find it hard to believe they did it without permission directly from Honda. Automakers are getting more and more savvy about building buzz that it just wouldn't surprise us, that's all. We had a call into Honda this afternoon as well, and we weren't that surprised when no one called back. Anyway, official shots of the CR-V had already been leaked onto the internet about five days ago, and undisguised spy shots have been floating around for even longer, so the new CR-V's skin is anything but surprising at this point. The gaping void below the front grille and the severely sloping outline of the rear side windows are still polarizing design elements whose acceptance will now be at the mercy of the market. What we do know now that we didn't before is that the CR-V will have a base price of $21,400 when it goes on sale in October. Option up the CR-V with a satellite navigation system and 270-watt stereo and the sticker will approach $28,000. The sole powerplant remains Honda's 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder, albeit upgraded for 2007 to produce an additional 10 horsepower (now 166 horsepower/161 ft-lbs. of torque), and no manual will be offered this time around, just a five-speed automatic. Though the CR-V's styling hasn't made the best first impression on us, we will say that Honda could be making a very shrewd move by not following the trend of dropping a powerful V6 into its tiniest of utes. The CR-V's 2.4-liter four will no doubt produce commendable gas mileage and operate at the typical level of Honda four-cylinder refinement. That combination could lead to big sales for the CR-V in these lean and green times. (Interior shot can be found after the jump) [source: AutoWeek] http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/26/prematu...ts-a-bit-early/ the front is definitely a joke. design does not couple to the body. looks like a chubby but obese kid on the block
