  1. Volkswagen will be offering two new special edition versions of the award winning Volkswagen Up! in Europe and it will be a treat for fans of rock genre of music and small city cars. Dubbed the Groove Up! and Rock Up!, both vehicles are based on the top-specification High Up! model, each bringing its own unique twist. In the cabin the Groove Up! comes with a rock friendly Fender sound system (the above picture refers to a similar system from the Beetle), complete with six speakers, a subwoofer and a 300-Watt amplifier. Additionally, the Maps & More personal infotainment device is offered as standard which along with touchscreen satellite navigation provides Bluetooth phone connectivity and music streaming
  2. Who needs parking assistance when you have the parking abilities of German stunt driver, Ronny Wechselberger? Known as Ronny C Rock in Germany, he has set a new Guinness World Record for the tightest parallel parking with only 14 cm of space between the other two cars. The stunt was performed in a Volkswagen Up!, which measures just 3.54m. The car is sandwiched between two other Up! models. Ronny parked in car into a 3.68m space which was electronically measured using a measuring tape and a laser device. The new record The new record beats the previous record marginally by 1 cm. The old record was set earlier this year by Chinese stunt driver, Han Yue, in a MINI Cooper. The timing between the two records was just 11 days. Drivers, please don't try this at home! The previous record
  3. In order to attract buyers in the United Kingdom for their new model, Skoda has recreated the prehistoric monument, Stonehenge, out of old cars. Known as the Citihenge, the art installation was built to mark the arrival of the Skoda Citigo, which is the Czech version of Volkswagen's Up! model. The unique replica of the Stonehenge is made entirely out of recycled car parts. The project is led by sculptor Tommy Gun and together with a design team, took three months to create. The ambitious piece of art, built using 18 scrap cars, stands at over five metres tall. Each "henge" is five metres wide and the commanding structure weighs a remarkable 36 tonnes. Pietro Panarisi, Skoda's spokesperson says, "The Citigo embodies the future of driving and is the smartest option for forward-thinking city drivers. While traditional cars struggle to perform well under the strain of city driving, the Citigo is designed to excel in the urban environment. Citihenge symbolises the beginning of a new era of motoring and we hope drivers across the country will recognise this important turning point." Tommy Gun has this to say about the project, "The Citihenge project has been the most amazing challenge. Stonehenge is a huge, iconic structure and the Citihenge replica is too. It is made entirely from old car parts, which taps into my own childhood growing up on a farm where I used to love building and creating things with pieces of discarded machinery." The Citihenge was erected on the south bank of the Thames river next to London's famous Tower Bridge and it will make a tour around the United Kingdom which includes the Goodwood Festival of Speed and its celebration of car culture, in West Sussex from 28th June
  4. Here's one Volkswagen which we may not be able to see over here in this region due to high taxes and the COE. The 5 door Volkwagen Up is actually a pretty neat 'People's Car' (which is what Volkswagen stands for) in that it provides a decent set of wheels for the general urban populace. It is set to be sold in Europe by the fourth quarter of 2012. This little UPstart follows hot on the heels of the recently launched 3 door hatchback variant. It has clever packaging and frugal fuel sipping engines that actually make it a very good city car. It has a 1.0liter petrol engine equipped with BlueMotion Technology. This means all the usual VW economy gaining tricks and stop-start function too. But as I stated, this is one Up and coming city car that we most probably will not be able to buy. It is down to economics presumably, and basically the dreaded Certificate Of Entitlement. The COE lumps eco-friendly 1.0liter cars together with cars (and sadly, taxis) 1.6liters and below. So if VW were to bring in the Up, it would have to actually be Up (pun intended) against the Polo and the Golf. And as Singapore is a small market, in-house competition isn't good especially when external competition is already pretty ridiculous as even Mercedes Benz is technically a competitor with the C-class sedans. Note that the same 1600cc and below COE is required to buy the Mercedes C class and if the COE costs SG$50,000. That would be the COE you need to pay for a truly tiny car like the Up and it isn't logical to the eyes of potential car owners. They'd rather buy a bigger car for better value of money. But I suppose most of you are already aware of this, aren't you? And therefore, there is presumably no chance of a Volkswagen Up in whatever form for people over here.
  5. At the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, Volkswagen introduced to the world its Up model which is a part of Volkswagen Group New Small Family series of models. It was a three-door city car that is suitable for urban driving. A four-door version was rumoured to be released and it is evident now that those rumours were true as Volkswagen have officially released pictures of it. With its boxy shape and compact profile, the Volkswagen Up will be popular among those who seek a small sized vehicle with a decent powered engine that can sit four passengers. The four-door Up is built on the same three-door Up platform but with two side doors added. Strangely, Volkswagen will market the car as a four door model instead of five. Even though the model has two extra doors, every aspect of it did not change except for the redesigned side profile. This enables buyers of the four-door version to enjoy the boot
  6. [extract] Before anyone makes any jokes about how many clowns can fit into a tiny car, this is no circus act. In fact, it is a publicity stunt organised by Volkswagen
  7. [extract] And before we can even start making a whole lot of Volkswagen 'Up' jokes, Volkswagen starts the ball rolling. They're calling the variants Take Up, Move Up, and High Up. For the launch, there is also the
