Source: https://mothership.sg/2023/11/lorry-speed-limiters/ All lorries in Singapore — with a maximum laden weight (MLW) of between 3,501kg and 12,000kg — must soon be equipped with a speed limiter to ensure that they do not exceed the 60km per hour speed limit. To reduce fatalities & injuries The Traffic Police (TP) said in a statement on Nov. 3, 2023, that lorry owners can start installing the devices in 2024 and will be given up to three years to do so, depending on the MLW and registration date of the vehicle. As of now, it is compulsory for goods vehicles with an MLW exceeding 12,000kg to have a speed limiter installed. The speed limiter complements other measures intended to reduce fatalities and injuries among all road users, the TP said. Timeline For lorries registered before 2018, a speed limiter must be installed before 2026 if their MLW is between 5,001kg and 12,000kg. For those with an MLW of between 3,501kg and 5,000kg, it must be completed before July 2026 Newer lorries registered from 2018 will have to install the device before 2027 if the MLW of their vehicle is between 5,001kg and 12,000kg, and before July 2027 if the MLW is between 3,501kg and 5,000kg. Speed limiters will also be required for imported lorries to be approved for use from 2026. During the vehicle’s pre-registration, relevant documentation should be submitted to the Land Transport Authority. The laws against tampering speed limiters, non-compliant speed limiters and unauthorised speed limiters will be reviewed, TP said. Companies will have to apply to be an authorised agent online by Nov. 30 to supply, install, rectify, or perform inspections on speed limiters for lorries. A list of authorised companies will be put up on the police website by Dec. 31, 2023. Companies that are currently authorised to install speed limiters in other vehicles are also required to apply for an authorisation certificate. Opt for electronic speed limiter The TP is urging lorry owners to install an electronic control unit-based speed limiter, which is newer and likely to be less expensive. But not all lorries are compatible with electronic control unit-based speed limiters. Owners should consult the device installation companies. The alternative is the mechanical speed limiter. Agents authorised by TP will conduct a compliance check after installation to ensure the speed limiter is functioning properly.

Vans and lorries flipping over?? Coincidence??
unicornfloof posted a topic in General Car Discussion
So I wrote this blog post on 3 vehicles flipping over this past week after getting into different accidents (go check it out if you haven't). Anyways, I was wondering why is so easy for these vehicles to flip over upon impact? 🤨 It's quite scary to know that it doesn't take much for such a heavy vehicle to topple over after impact. >< Any thoughts/opinions on it? Also, is this a case of recklessness from heavy vehicle drivers or is there something more to it? 😱😲- 21 replies

I wonder whether the traffic rules has changed lately Are Lorries and Vans allowed to take 2nd lanes of the expressway? I encounter many of them driving <70 km/h ,hogging the 2nd lanes during the evenings on PIE . Are they contributing to the congestion ?!

Got a few questions... 1. Van COE last for how many years?? (car last for 10 years, but since van have higher mileages, they tend to have shorter COE lifespan right?) 2. What is the road tax structure for diesel vans?? 3. Do new vans suffer steep depreciation?? 4. Can ppl with class 3 license drive a small van e.g. Renault Kangoo diesel van?? 5. Any websites / articles I can go to to find out more about the cost of owning / maintaining a van in Singapore?

There was a time when car-based panel vans were all over Singapore. I remember Corollas and Datsuns making the bulk of them. Some time in the late 1990s they disappeared altogether. However, they did not actually go out of production. Some models are still available in Japan and Europe, and even Mini has a panel van. Anyone knows what happened? Was it because of certain regulations, or they just somehow went out of favour? A KE70 Corolla panel van, used to be a common sight in Singapore. A MINI panel van, recent generation. Vauxhall Astra panel van, from 2006.

What kind of imbecile drives this fast? The thought must have crossed your mind at least once whenever you witness a Ferrari or Lamborghini blazing past. And I don’t blame you. I’ve even muttered the (rare) expletive when I encounter such behaviour. However, my column this month isn’t about supercar owners and their driving habits. Except for the proverbial bad penny, which turns up once in a blue moon, the sports car drivers I know all conduct themselves pretty well. On the other hand, the individuals behind the wheel of commercial vehicles– trucks, lorries, vans and trailers – have been getting on my nerves. Again, I’m not saying that every one of them behaves in the same manner, but the increasing number of times I’ve seen huge trucks zoom past me (and vans travelling in front of my car at high speeds) isn’t only highly irritating, but also worrying. Take a trip down the AYE (in the direction of the ECP) and you’ll see what I mean. There will be commercial vehicles in every lane, except the rightmost one, for much of the way. Come to think of it, I’ve also seen them in said lane –overtaking other vehicles at speeds way in excess of the regulatory limit. The loads that are ferried by these vehicles weigh tonnes – and I cannot imagine the extent of the carnage should they get into accidents. During one rainy October evening on the Keppel Viaduct (this stretch is a great place to catch these offenders); I got the scare of my life. A truck carrying a load of earth (bits and pieces were falling out of the back) sped past on my left and then swerved into my lane suddenly. This action caused it to oversteer, and its tail slid from left to right before the driver (who surely must have been praying, because I sure was) managed to get it under control. I tell you, I was so sure it was going to tip over that I was already looking around to see where to steer my car. At that juncture, I was even prepared to perform a handbrake turn if the need arose. Thankfully, I didn’t have to. The whole thing could easily have been avoided if Mr Stupid Truck Driver stuck to the speed limit, and was mindful of the sheer size and weight of his vehicle. I know the authorities are aware of the potential danger these vehicles pose to road users, but something more needs to be done to punish the law-breakers. For a start, I’m all for increased policing, especially along the roads that these drivers frequent. And before you get all jumpy at my suggestion (as this would also mean that every driver will come under heavier scrutiny), I have one final thing to add: Is there really any need to speed? Tony also recommends that all commercial vehicles to be fitted with speed limiters – just like the ones installed in Formula One race cars – that will prevent them from exceeding a preset limit while they’re on the road. This article was written by Tony Tan, freelance writer for Torque.

I have seen my fair share from riding to driving... Vans/Lorries just somehow hold up middle lanes in expressways and think they are travelling very fast when i can overtake and zoom past them on the 3rd/4th lane but only doing 90-100km/hr... Hoggers hog 1st lane all the way travelling @ 60-85km/hr till god knows where... somemore in front of them the vehicle is either far far away or no vehicle... Is it because of them tat cause the jams in sg roads? since the vans/lorries like to take middle lane dan we give them the high-speed 1st lane to travel and we go to most left lane travelling faster dan them... Just seen one tis morning coming to work on PIE(changi), this uncle in front of me driving a liteace and straight away enter from kim keat signal and go all the way out to middle lane when he's only doing 50km/hr... not saying tat vans/lorries cant travel middle lane but only for overtaking even slower vehicles dan them but not all the way stick to middle lane and make drivers like me frustrated... i cant go 1st lane as there are hoggers and middle lane these guys are holding up, so left with left most lane where i need to change to middle lane after overtaking these vans/lorries and get to their front when vehicles on left most lane travel slower.... What is this? Gracious society? I would rather put it tis way as Bo-chup society...

hi fellow bro, the no of vans with sofa seats at the back of the van is increasing... so i was wondering if the seats are actually legal and if not, wat's the penalty after being caught... most the vans at the bk haf a sticker of 5 pax at the back, so does dis means the sofa seats are legal?

Nowadays, always see them driving on the second and third lane on the expressway. Does any one encounter it and they will jam the expressway.

Nowadays, do you all notice that those van n lorry drivers are getting bolder? You'll see them using lane 1 to overtake vehicles, out of 4 lane, you see 3 lanes full of lorry and vans and worst off, driving on lane 1 like he owns it. No thanks to the garment for increasing their speed limits and allowing them to go on lane 2. Maybe it's part of their fine plan to mess up the highway and have the excuess to up more erp gantry. They don't pay as much road tax as me but they sure get to use as much of the road as me. Not fair man.... Just wondering why tp are not eying them like they eye us for speeding. Hiaz....

They are really rude and inconsiderate, for instance: - turn when red light is still ON - overtaking 3rd lane to turn right to SLE - very close to my back - speeding May i know how to lodge complain to TP for this inconsiderate drivers? thanks...
