Prof gets 1-year probation for stealing hostelite's undies By Elena Chong AN ASSOCIATE professor at a China university was placed on 12 months' probation on Monday for theft of women's undergarments. Lee Wing Foon, 39, pleaded guilty in February to three counts of stealing brassieres and panties from three students at Nanyang Technological University on Dec 20 last year. The value of the stolen items was $153. Lee, who is suffering from fetishism, a sexual disorder, was caught at around 9.40pm that day when an NTU security officer saw him loitering at a hall of residence carrying a black bag. He was detained and taken to the security post where his bag was found to contain two bras and a panty belonging to a 21-year-old student. He had earlier stolen clothings and undergarments from the same hall when he drove there. He then placed the two 19-year-olds' bras and panties in a plastic bag in his car. Community Court Judge James Leong had called for a pre-sentence report which recommended probation for Lee. His lawyer, Mr Jose Charles, had earlier tendered a psychiatric report which said Lee had committed the offences as a result of his urges, work and marital stress. Under the probation order, Lee cannot leave the country for work beyond seven days on each occasion without first getting the permission of his probation officer. He has to attend psychiatric treatment and follow-up regularly, as well as specific treatment programme to address his condition. Lee had told the court that he was still doing work in China and would consult the probation officer if he was needed over there. Judge Leong said it was imperative that he undergo the period of probation without any problem. If he breaches his probation, he would be brought back to court to be sentenced for the original offences. Lee thanked the judge after the probation order. Two charges of fraudulently having a total of 544 pieces of underwear and apparel believed to have been stolen were considered during his sentencing. He could have been jailed for up to three years or fined, or both, for each charge of theft. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2...ry_224703.html yay!! he gets 12 months of probation aka holiday but no free food and lodging!

Since young I've had random urges to open the door of a moving car. Technically I've done it before once when I was really young and got scolded by my parents. Ever since, I've had random temptations to do it every now and then but I would tell myself, no! It still happens now. I've also had random urges to let go of my motorcycle handlebar when riding at a certain speed and let it skid. I don't know if I can call it a voice, but there's just an inner voice telling me to "let it go". And then another part of me will tell myself "don't do it". Tall buildings and cliff edges, do you get that little voice inside your head to "just jump"? I do. Anyone with similar experiences? If yes, what's yours? Keep the thread clean thank you!

OMG, the 3-day work week sounds so nice; but 11 hour days, hmm http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11339918&ref=nzh_tw MEX Billionaire urges three-day work week Mexican billionaire also says people should work 11 hour days until they turn 75. The world's richest man is calling for a radical overhaul of our work-life balance that would see people at their jobs for just three days a week. Carlos Slim, the Mexican telecom tycoon worth over US$80 billion ($101 billion), also believes people the typical working day should last 11 hours instead of eight and that the retirement age should be increased to 75. "You should have more time for you during all of your life - not when you're 65 and retired," he told CNNMoney. The 74-year-old billionaire first raised the idea at a conference in Paraguay during the summer when he called for "a radical overhaul" in people's working lives. He believes the concept would not only re-invigorate how we live, but be positive for the economy and financial markets. "With three work days a week, we would have more time to relax; for quality of life," he said. "Having four days [off] would be very important to generate new entertainment activities and other ways of being occupied," he told the conference. While machines should operate 24 hours a day and services should work as much as possible, Slim said people deserve more time for entertainment, family and to train for better jobs. "It's a society of knowledge and experience. You have better experience and knowledge when you are 60, 65 and 70," he said. Slim wasn't clear if wages should stay the same or decrease to reflect less time on the job. He declined to throw his weight behind recent calls for workers to get paid higher wages though. He conceded prices may have grown faster than wages, but he believes salaries will rise along with stronger growth, increased productivity and technological advances. "I am sure it will happen," said Slim, although he conceded he's not exactly sure when. To a certain degree, Slim has been applying this train of thought to his own businesses for years. Slim's phone company Telmex has implemented a system where workers on a collective labour contract who joined the company in their late teens can retire before they reach 50, and can continue to work for full pay four days per week. Slim also applies this philosophy to his own work life and is still active as a businessman at 74. He also maintains a life full of hobbies, such as art collecting. He opened the Museo Soumaya, an art museum dedicated to both his love for art and religious relics as well as the memory of his late wife, Soumaya Domit.

Law and Foreign Affairs Minister, K Shanmugam, said it is time for Singaporeans to seriously reconsider their driving habits. On his latest Facebook post, he said he received over 360 comments to his post on driving habits, a subject which had obviously touched some raw nerves. Mr Shanmugam said his wife has been driving for 23 years, and has never received a ticket, and is a very careful, steady driver. Turning to his own driving experiences, he said that he puts a premium on being courteous on the roads. The minister said the issue of traffic and accidents have been on his mind in the last few weeks. Last Friday, he visited an elderly woman at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, a victim of an accident in his constituency. Two days ago, he met an ambassador at a function, who felt that the driving in Singapore was worse than the experiences in her country. Over weekend coffee at Chun Tin Road, Mr Shanmugam said both he and his wife have been regularly shocked by the fairly brazen conduct of some drivers, with cars turning into a one-way street, against the flow of traffic from the main road, in order to make a three-point turn, amongst several driving habits. Mr Shanmugam said where they have been able to, both he and his wife have given the vehicle numbers to the Traffic Police. The minister felt that over the years, Singaporeans seem to have become less courteous, which indicates something about society. Mr Shanmugam stressed that how well others are treated, defines people as a society. Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1222087/1/.html
