    Tsunami Alert

Indonesia issues tsunami alert after 7.1-magnitude earthquake strikes sea off North Sulawesi The shallow quake struck at 10.08pm (11.08pm Singapore time) at a depth of 10km, said BMKG. It was centred in the Molucca Sea between North Sulawesi and North Maluku, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake was felt in Manado and Bitung in North Sulawesi, as well as Ternate in North Maluku, according to the BMKG. The cities of Bitung and Ternate, as well as Halmahera and Tidore in North Maluku, have been put on standby for a potential tsunami by the BMKG. A consular notice by the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta has been issued to warn its citizens about the earthquake and tsunami alert. "Malaysians in the surrounding areas (of North Sulawesi) are advised to take precautionary steps and follow the latest directions from the local authorities," it said. This is a developing story. 3. Indonesia tsunami: Death toll rises to 222, hundreds more injured JAKARTA: Indonesia's disaster agency said 222 people were dead and hundreds more injured after a tsunami struck coastal areas around the Sunda Strait between the islands of Sumatra and Java on Saturday (Dec 22) night. "222 people are dead, 843 people are injured and 28 people are missing," Indonesia's national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Sunday evening. "This number is predicted to increase because not all victims have been successfully evacuated, not all health centres have reported victims and not all locations have got complete data." He said that all the casualties were Indonesian citizens, with no foreign national casualties reported. The victims and damage occurred across four affected districts, namely in the Pandeglang, Serang, South Lampung and Tanggamus regencies, he added. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed by the wave, which hit the coast of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java about 9.30 pm (1430 GMT) following the eruption of a volcano known as the "child" of the legendary Krakatoa, national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. Youtube CNN news http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/....japan.warning/ http://www.ausbt.com.au/sendai-airport-hit...apan-earthquake Tsunami warnings are also in effect for Russia, the Marianas Islands, the Marcus Islands, Guam, Wake Island, and Taiwan. Tsunami watches are also out for Yap, the Philipines, the Marshall Islands, Belau, Midway Island, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Kosrae, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, the Johnston Islands, the Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Hawaii. Airports across the Western Pacific are likely to be affected, as the geography of the coastline and islands of the Pacific mean that airports tend to be built towards the coastline. Initially reported as a magnitude 7.3 earthquake, the United States Geological Survey has hiked the reported magnitude to 8.9. After such a massive earthquake, tsunami warnings spread out across the Pacific

  7. A 35-metre (115-foot) tsunami could hit the Japanese coast in the wake of a massive earthquake, an expert panel has said after revising its worst case scenario projections following last year's disaster. If a 9.0-magnitude quake struck in the Nankai Trough off central to western Japan huge swathes of the Pacific coastline could be inundated, with 20-metre-plus waves hitting areas from Tokyo down to the southwestern island of Kyushu. At the town of Kuroshio in southwestern Kochi prefecture the tsunami could reach 34.4 metres -- the highest level projected under the scenario, the Cabinet Office panel said late Saturday. And at the now offline Hamaoka nuclear plant in central Shizuoka prefecture, the tsunami could be as high as 21 metres, breaching the 18-metre breakwater that operators are currently constructing, the panel said. In its previous projection in 2003 the panel gave a worst case scenario in which no areas would be hit by a tsunami of more than 20 metres. But the panel has upgraded its predictions in the wake of the 9.0-magnitude earthquake on March 11 last year that sent a tsunami barrelling into the northeast, killing some 19,000 people and devastating the coastline. Waves of more than 15 metres hit cities including Ishinomaki, Soma, and Ofunato. The monster tsunami crippled cooling systems at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, sparking a crisis which is still ongoing. The panel noted that the projection was for "the worst possible tsunami" and the "chance of its occurrence is extremely low". It said it will continue studying the extent of areas that could be hit and submerged by a tsunami, while the government will examine its emergency disaster measures based on the latest estimation. 8. As I write this article (27/12/11), there will be only a few days left to 2011. Many things have happened in the automotive industry in 2011. This is not a list of the best or worst of 2011 in the automotive industry but more like a recap of some of the incidents/news that took place in the automotive world in 2011. Japan earthquake and tsunami catastrophe The 9.0 magnitude earthquake that happened in Japan on 11 March 2011 caused extensive damage to a lot of things. Not only properties and infrastructures were damaged, a significant number of human lives were lost as well. It was further made worse by a tsunami which was triggered by the earthquake. Video footage and images of people running to save their lives were broadcast on the news and it was a painful moment for everyone in the country. The earthquake also damaged a nuclear power plant which emitted harmful levels of radiation after that. On the business side, many automakers suffered huge losses when the earthquake and tsunami destroyed their manufacturing plants and new cars. Several of them had to shutdown their manufacturing operations and it took them months to get back at the same level before the disasters occurred. Toyota

  10. Toyota has announced profits of US$314 million for the first three months of 2011, down 77% as compared to the same period a year ago. Fortunately, Toyota still managed to remain profitable in spite of the March 11 earthquake that caused most Japanese plants to shut down. Toyota's sales were predictably low for the quarter, and revenue was hurt as a result. Toyota's profits for its fiscal fourth quarter may be disappointing, but the automaker is likely to release even less promising figures for the first 6 months of 2011. This is because Toyota is still struggling through supply issues, with many plants running at only 50% capacity, if they're running at all. Further, Toyota says that dealers in the U.S. and China are likely to see less products in the coming months, which could lead to much lower revenue. On a brighter note, Toyota now says that production should ramp up to 70% of capacity by June, up from previous estimates of July or August. That should help get Toyota back on its feet faster, which is good for employment as well. For the whole fiscal year, Toyota earned US$5.9 billion or nearly three times the profit of fiscal year 2009. Revenue was also up by 0.2% to $237 billion on sales of 7.3 million vehicles, up by 71,000 units as compared to 2009. The outlook for Toyota doesn

The money will be made available to charities aiding in the humanitarian relief effort. The donation is part of a joint initiative by the Volkswagen Group.

  13. http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-570978 Local Malaysian newspaper Berita Harian published a caricature in their editor's column today that depicts the popular Japanese cartoon character Ultraman as trying to outrun an incoming tsunami. The publication has received tremendous criticisms by readers, who accuse the editors as being "inconsiderate and distasteful". Several political leaders have even stepped out and demand a public apology, to which the editors promptly made on their publication's Facebook fan page.
  14. SINGAPORE, one of Asia's wealthiest cities, is not completely immune from a tsunami and should prepare for the possibility, an expert on coastal areas warned on Friday. The island-state can be hit by a tsunami generated from three locations and the waves could damage key coastal infrastructure without being too high, said Professor Wong Poh Poh of the National University of Singapore geography department. 'It's not that we are totally immune. No, we are not immune,' Prof Wong said. He was speaking at a news conference to launch a report, by the aid and development organisation World Vision, on the impact of climate change on poor people. To cause damage, waves hitting Singapore need not be as huge as the ones that devastated Indonesia's Aceh in December 2004, killing 168,000 people, Wong said. Aceh was struck by a wave about 10 metres high. 'We don't need 10 metres. The problem with Singapore is... we have a lot of infrastructure on the coast. All you need is a very low wave to just come in and hit certain areas,' he said. 'Changi Airport will be very vulnerable,' he said, adding the man-made island of Jurong which houses a sprawling petrochemical complex is also at risk, and urged the government to commission a study on tsunamis. With increase in reclamation & construction on our small island, I find that this something not to be taken lightly.
