Covid has lasted a long time and many of us have not traveled. I hope to get my wife and maybe myself a treat, but we don't really want to go out, so I hope to get recommendations for good massages services that visit you, if they can provide some kind of spa or even hair treatment, please send them over? And no james, not 'that' kind ok? Nice and pleasant, even visually handicapped ones are ok, but I'm not sure if they do takeouts.. I did my own google, but I really have no experience with them and would like to hear from others who have tried their services: https://dailyvanity.sg/beauty-reviews/home-massage-services-singapore Will prefer a standard oil massage, head to toe. Thanks! PS: I considered a massage chair, but I don't really have the space and it's not something we do often enough to justify the Andy Lau chair...

Would you avoid visiting the Dentist during this COVID-19 pandemic? After all there is the possible risk of aerosol transmission between consecutive patients at the dental clinics, unless we are talking negative pressure dental rooms with strict infection control protocols. Wondering how is the general public viewing the importance of non-essential dental treatment during this pandemic. https://mothership.sg/2020/04/covid-dental-care/

Being a long time and frequent gout sufferer, I have been taking medication(although not very disciplined and regular in it) as well eating food like cherries, but my gout still recurred from time to time. Recently, I started taking supplements like green barley and spirulina upon the recommendation of a friend, and I realized that the frequency of gout happening is much less and the gout seem to be less severe. Any other gout sufferers can share their ways of coping with gout? Another colleague told me that everytime before he goes on a seafood feast, he would take two conchicine tablets(gout medication) before that and usually he would not have gout attacks after eating seafood. Not so sure if that is a good way though.

Who here is still using STP Oil treatment? I am still using it for my old Toyota. Its one of the cheapest and oldest oil treatment out there that actually works. No magic about the product. Mainly some viscosity enhancers and lots of Zinc! Thats about all. Cause my car needs a 50wt oil, thus I decide to use 40wt oil and STP instead. IT actually works better than just plain 50wt oil and its cheaper! lol... However, be warned that STP oil treatment contains lots of zinc which may affect your cat. Mine is old car so I don't really care.

AstraZeneca seeks U.S. OK for new COVID treatment Tue, October 5, 2021, 5:00 PM AstraZeneca is seeking U.S. approval for its new COVID treatment. It's asked for emergency authorisation from the Food and Drug Administration. That's according to a statement from the UK firm. It concerns an antibody therapy dubbed AZD7442. AstraZeneca says a late-stage trial shows it reduces the chances of developing COVID-19 symptoms by 77%. It says the treatment could help people who don't develop a strong immune response after vaccination. Regular shots require a healthy immune system to develop antibodies in response, while the new treatment contains lab-made antibodies. U.S. approval would be a big win for the company. Its widely used shot still hasn't been approved for use there. AstraZeneca says talks regarding supply of the new treatment are ongoing with the U.S. and other countries. https://news.yahoo.com/astrazeneca-seeks-u-ok-covid-090024339.html

https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Pharmaceuticals/Alzheimer-s-grand-slam-for-Biogen-and-Eisai-five-things-to-know?utm_campaign=RN Subscriber newsletter&utm_medium=daily newsletter&utm_source=NAR Newsletter&utm_content=article link&del_type=1&pub_date=20210608190000&seq_num=7&si=44594 Alzheimer's 'grand slam' for Biogen and Eisai: five things to know Treatment for dementia still faces financial and regulatory hurdles An estimated 6 million people in Japan are suffering dementia, or 17% of the senior population. Eisai filed for approval to use aducanumab in Japan in December. (Source photos by Ken Kobayashi and Kosaku Mimura) MITSURU OBE, Nikkei staff writerJune 8, 2021 18:15 JST TOKYO -- U.S. regulators' approval on Monday of aducanumab, an Alzheimer's treatment jointly developed by California-based Biogen and Tokyo-based Eisai, is potentially a life-changing moment for millions. This is the first time that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug designed to slow the progress of Alzheimer's in sufferers. Previous drugs targeting the disease have aimed only to alleviate symptoms. It has raised hopes that dementia, a pressing challenge in countries with aging populations, can better be dealt with. In Japan, an estimated 6 million people are suffering dementia, or 17% of the senior population. Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, accounting for nearly 70% of cases. But approval of aducanumab has also been contentious. Is the treatment going to wipe out the disease? How does it work? Here are five things to know. How does aducanumab work? Alzheimer's is a disease that causes memory loss and makes it difficult to carry out daily activities or even to speak. The exact cause is unknown, but scientists believe that a protein called beta amyloid is a major cause. As amyloid increases in the brain, it starts forming fibers and then plaques, damaging nerve cells and causing them to die, according to Eisai. Aducanumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets amyloid, allowing the body to reduce it in the brain. The human body is capable of removing amyloid, but the ability declines with age, Eisai says. The drug is found to be effective especially when it is used for early-stage patients, according to Eisai, so it is important that the disease is detected early. Will it eliminate Alzheimer's? This is the big question. The FDA gave aducanumab an accelerated approval, meaning that Biogen will still need to prove the drug's effectiveness in a post-market study. This is because the results of the earlier trials were not as compelling as the drugmakers hoped them to be -- one of the reasons why approval for the drug was in doubt. Under the scheme, patients will be allowed to use the drug even though there is still residual uncertainty regarding its efficacy. The approval can be withdrawn if it fails to show its effectiveness in a post-market study. Price could also be a hurdle for broad adoption. Biogen said on Monday that the drug's list price would be $56,000 a year for an average U.S. patient. The high price tag is likely to limit the users of the drug to those who have an insurance policy that can cover such expensive drugs in the U.S. In Japan, the drug, if approved, would be covered by the national health care insurance. Given the tight fiscal situation of the Japanese government, access to the drug could be limited to those who are found to have a high level of amyloid, for instance, a drug analyst at a Japanese brokerage house said. For that, the patient needs to receive a brain scan, but such equipment is not widely available and receiving a test is expensive, the analyst said. But the analyst expects that demand for the drug will be "very strong." What has Eisai's role been? Eisai is a Japanese drugmaker founded in 1941. The current CEO, Haruo Naito, is a grandson of the founder and is known for strong leadership and a top-down management style. He has made Eisai focus on two areas, Alzheimer's disease and cancer. Under his leadership, Eisai has emerged as a strong developer of innovative drugs. The company has developed Aricept, a treatment of Alzheimer's disease symptoms. Eisai joined Biogen's project to develop aducanumab in 2014. Development was risky and analysts say Eisai would not have pursued such a project without Naito's personal commitment. How has the market reacted? The news of the U.S. approval took the market by surprise. Shares of Eisai ended up 19% on Tuesday, the biggest gainer on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's first section. In the U.S., shares in Biogen rose more than 50% at one stage and ended the day up 38% at their highest level in six years. The steep rises reflect the degree of uncertainty over whether the drug would receive U.S. approval. "It was like hitting a grand slam in the back of the ninth inning," the Japanese analyst said. What happens next? Attention will now center on further required regulatory approval for aducanumab in other markets, and on whether other drugs that use similar science can be developed. Eisai filed in December for separate approval in Japan. "We'd like to make the drug available to Japanese patients as soon as possible," a spokesperson said. Eisai is also developing, with Biogen, a similar treatment called lecanemab or BAN2401. Lecanemab is also used for removing amyloid at an early stage of Alzheimer's. The company plans to file for approval for lecanemab in the next fiscal year starting in April 2022.

My aunt, in her fifties, suffers from painful piles / hemorrhoids. I did a search, it can arise because of old age so not surprising she is suffering it now. She went to a specialist last week and told me that she has 1 internal and 1 external. Doctor advised surgery, which requires GA and 1 day hospital stay but it could take 2 weeks to recover. She is horrified at the prospect of surgery. I wished she could go for the surgery as she had been tormented by piles regularly this year but unable to convince her. Apart from surgery, does TCM help? Anyone here been for the surgery before? Is she able to walk after the surgery?

Hi folks, after doing extensive research, it seems that conditions like Fibromyalgia, Costochondrities and related information isn't being discussed extensively in Asia. I brought this up because the above conditions are not life threatening but has a big resemblance to life threatening problems. Most doctors will brush people off suffering from the above conditions as having a mental breakdown. As these type of conditions are not well understood even in the medical community, I hope this thread will be a good avenue for people to share and encourage those who has contracted these painful conditions. These are some of the useful links I have found but are mainly not in Asia, https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321635.php http://healthiculture.com/fibromyalgia/newsletter/3paintypes/paintypes-9.php https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/costochondritis/

92 children in China burned by TCM treatment gone wrong https://www.asiaone.com/china/92-children-china-burned-tcm-treatment-gone-wrong A hospital in Jiangxi, China, has recently suspended a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy after 92 children suffered from burns after receiving the treatment. Known as sanfutie (三伏贴), the treatment usually involves applying medicated patches on various acupuncture points on the patient's back to treat illnesses. According to Chinese media, 881 children received the treatment from July 12 to 13. With Jiangxi Provincial Hospital's reputation as a trustworthy and top-tier medical facility, the therapy was highly anticipated by parents, said a mother, Wu Meng (pseudonym), whose daughter and son received the treatment. 10 minutes after application of sanfutie, however, her daughter "could not bear it any longer and ripped off the medicinal patch," she said. Meanwhile, her son bore the brunt of the effects of the treatment which lasted for two hours. By night time, his skin started to turn red. The boy cried constantly, was unable to eat and maintained a high fever for 20 hours, Wu told Red Star News. According to investigations, the reason behind the children's adverse skin reactions to the TCM treatment was a change in the formula of the herbal paste that was used. Young ginger was replaced with old ginger and the alcohol concentration of the paste was increased from 56° to 62°. Hospital staff had believed that the new formula would be more effective. Instead, the 'improved' formula saw children suffering adverse skin reactions, ranging from redness and swelling of the skin, blisters, broken skin, to burns. Parents have appealed to the hospital to conduct an examination to prove that the treatment has no toxic side effects, and publish the components of the herbal paste, so as to reveal whether it contained any harmful ingredients. They also asked that the hospital allow affected children to stay at the hospital for treatment, as well as provide appropriate compensation. Meanwhile, the Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Provincial Health Commission has instructed the hospital to dismiss the staff responsible for the incident and also provide sufficient follow-up treatment for the affected children. Such an incident is not the first of its kind. Red Star News reporters have discovered that many hospitals in Guangdong, Shandong, Henan, and other places have promoted sanfutie treatment. Patients who underwent the treatment at said hospitals also suffered from burns. [email protected]

Hi all, Need some advice on Chiropractic Treatment. Was at a mall and a roadshow by a Chiropractic clinic was there giving free checks on spinal health. From the check, they will invite you to go for a more thorough check which will include a Xray of the spinal columns and neck. I went through the thorough check with Xray and the results were quite 'shocking'. I always had neck pain but not so much that I can't function normally on daily chores. Still can play some sports. So I was shocked to see my Xrays showing a neck without much curvature, and a crooked spine. So I am now offered a package of certain no. of sessions at special rate. And with more sessions pre-purchased, the better the price. It is quite a big financial commitment so I hope bros/sis here can advice and comment if you had experience or heard about it. Thanks for your time. Cheers!

Just to share as a friend underwent a surgery due to this. Take note if you have persistent abdominal pain, it should not be ignored. https://www.healthline.com/health/hernia What is a hernia?A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. For example, the intestines may break through a weakened area in the abdominal wall. Hernias are most common in the abdomen, but they can also appear in the upper thigh, belly button, and groin areas. Most hernias aren’t immediately life-threatening, but they don’t go away on their own. Sometimes they can require surgery to prevent potentially dangerous complications. Common hernia types Inguinal herniaInguinal hernias are the most common type of hernia. They make up about 70 percent of all hernias, according to the British Hernia Centre (BHC). These hernias occur when the intestines push through a weak spot or tear in the lower abdominal wall, often in the inguinal canal. The inguinal canal is found in your groin. In men, it’s the area where the spermatic cord passes from the abdomen to the scrotum. This cord holds up the testicles. In women, the inguinal canal contains a ligament that helps hold the uterus in place. This type of hernia is more common in men than women. This is because a man’s testicles descend through the inguinal canal shortly after birth, and the canal is supposed to close almost completely behind them. Sometimes, the canal doesn’t close properly and leaves a weakened area prone to hernias. Hiatal herniaA hiatal hernia occurs when part of your stomach protrudes up through the diaphragm into your chest cavity. The diaphragm is a sheet of muscle that helps you breathe by contracting and drawing air into the lungs. It separates the organs in your abdomen from those in your chest. This type of hernia is most common in people over 50 years old. If a child has the condition, it’s typically caused by a congenital birth defect. Hiatal hernias almost always cause gastroesophageal reflux, which is when the stomach contents leak backward into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation. Umbilical herniaUmbilical hernias can occur in children and babies under 6 months old. This happens when their intestines bulge through their abdominal wall near their bellybutton. You may notice a bulge in or near your child’s bellybutton, especially when they’re crying. An umbilical hernia is the only kind that often goes away on its own as the abdominal wall muscles get stronger, typically by the time the child is 1 years old. If the hernia hasn’t gone away by this point, surgery may be used to correct it. Incisional herniaIncisional hernias can occur after you’ve had abdominal surgery. Your intestines may push through the incision scar or the surrounding, weakened tissue. What causes a hernia? Hernias are caused by a combination of muscle weakness and strain. Depending on its cause, a hernia can develop quickly or over a long period of time. Common causes of muscle weakness include: failure of the abdominal wall to close properly in the womb, which is a congenital defect age chronic coughing damage from injury or surgery Factors that strain your body and may cause a hernia, especially if your muscles are weak, include: being pregnant, which puts pressure on your abdomen being constipated, which causes you to strain when having a bowel movement lifting heavy weight fluid in the abdomen, or ascites suddenly gaining weight surgery in the area persistent coughing or sneezing Am I at the risk of hernia? The factors that increase your risk of developing a hernia include: a personal or family history of hernias being overweight or obese a chronic cough chronic constipation smoking, which can trigger a chronic cough Conditions such as cystic fibrosis can also indirectly increase your risk of developing a hernia. Cystic fibrosis impairs the function of the lungs, causing a chronic cough. What are the symptoms of hernia? The most common symptom of a hernia is a bulge or lump in the affected area. In the case of an inguinal hernia, you may notice a lump on either side of your pubic bone where your groin and thigh meet. You’re more likely to feel your hernia through touch when you’re standing up, bending down, or coughing. If your baby has a hernia, you may only be able to feel the bulge when they're crying. A bulge is typically the only symptom of an umbilical hernia. Other common symptoms of an inguinal hernia include: pain or discomfort in the affected area (usually the lower abdomen), especially when bending over, coughing, or lifting weakness, pressure, or a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen a burning, gurgling, or aching sensation at the site of the bulge Other symptoms of a hiatal hernia include: acid reflux, which is when stomach acid moves backward into the esophagus causing a burning sensation chest pain difficulty swallowing In some cases, hernias have no symptoms. You may not know you have a hernia unless it shows up during a routine physical or a medical exam for an unrelated problem. How is hernia diagnosed? Inguinal or incisional hernias are usually diagnosed through a physical examination. Your doctor may feel for a bulge in your abdomen or groin that gets larger when you stand, cough, or strain. If you have a hiatal hernia, your doctor may diagnose it with a barium X-ray or endoscopy. A barium X-ray is a series of X-ray pictures of your digestive tract. The pictures are recorded after you’ve finished drinking a liquid solution containing barium, which shows up well on the X-ray images. An endoscopy involves threading a small camera attached to a tube down your throat and into your esophagus and stomach. These tests both allow your doctor to see the internal location of your stomach. If your child has an umbilical hernia, your doctor may perform an ultrasound. An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the structures inside the body. Treatment options of hernia Whether or not you need treatment depends on the size of your hernia and the severity of your symptoms. Your doctor may simply monitor your hernia for possible complications. Treatment options for a hernia include lifestyle changes, medication, or surgery. Lifestyle changesDietary changes can often treat the symptoms of a hiatal hernia, but won’t make the hernia go away. Avoid large or heavy meals, don’t lie down or bend over after a meal, and keep your body weight in a healthy range. Certain exercises may help strengthen the muscles around the hernia site, which may reduce some symptoms. However, exercises done improperly can increase pressure at that area and may actually cause the hernia to bulge more. It’s best to discuss what exercises to do and not do with your doctor or physical therapist. If these changes don’t eliminate your discomfort, you may need surgery to correct the hernia. You can also improve symptoms by avoiding foods that cause acid reflux or heartburn, such as spicy foods and tomato-based foods. Additionally, you can avoid acid reflux by losing weight and giving up cigarettes. MedicationIf you have a hiatal hernia, over-the-counter and prescription medications that reduce stomach acid can relieve your discomfort and improve symptoms. These include antacids, H-2 receptor blockers, and proton pump inhibitors. SurgeryIf your hernia is growing larger or causing pain, your doctor may decide it’s best to operate. Your doctor may repair your hernia by sewing the hole in the abdominal wall closed during surgery. This is most commonly done by patching the hole with surgical mesh. Hernias can be repaired with either open or laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic surgery uses a tiny camera and miniaturized surgical equipment to repair the hernia using only a few small incisions. Laparoscopic surgery is less damaging to the surrounding tissue. Open surgery requires a longer recovery process. You may be unable to move around normally for up to six weeks. Laparoscopic surgery has a much shorter recovery time, but the risk of your hernia reoccurring is higher. In addition, not all hernias are suitable for laparoscopic repair. This includes hernias where a portion of your intestines has moved down into the scrotum. Potential complications of hernia If left untreated, your hernia may grow and become more painful. A portion of your intestine could become trapped in the abdominal wall. This can obstruct your bowel and cause severe pain, nausea, or constipation. An untreated hernia can also put too much pressure on nearby tissues. This can cause swelling and pain in the surrounding area. If the trapped section of your intestines doesn’t get enough blood flow, strangulation occurs. This can cause the intestinal tissue to become infected or die. A strangulated hernia is life-threatening and requires immediate medical care. Preventing a hernia You can’t always prevent the muscle weakness that allows a hernia to occur. However, you can reduce the amount of strain you place on your body. This may help you avoid a hernia or keep an existing hernia from getting worse. Prevention tips include: not smoking seeing your doctor when you’re sick to avoid developing a persistent cough maintaining a healthy body weight avoiding straining during bowel movements or urination lifting objects with your knees and not your back avoiding lifting weights that are too heavy for you OutlookIt’s important to recognize the early signs of a hernia. An untreated hernia will not go away on its own. However, with early medical care or lifestyle changes, you can minimize the effects of a hernia and avoid life-threatening complications like strangulation.

Dear all, Looks like age has really caught up with me. Have been bugged by heel pain for close to a year. Consulted a Chinese physician and he told me it's heel spur (骨刺). Went for a few sessions of bone setting (推拿)and there was quite a significant improvement initially. But after a while, the treatment seems to have reached a saturation where I can't get any further improvements. I could still feel the residual pain, especially after a walk. Has anyone here encountered a similar problem, is there any treatment I could seek? 唉...不认老都不行了.

Hi All, Just wanted to share the unfair treatment I received while at ICQ Woodlands yesterday. I arranged to pick up my new passport at ICA, Lavender at 2 PM because my old passport has ran out of pages before expiry. Went down to ICA at around 1:35 PM and got by passport at 1:45 PM. Efficient I must say. Told the counter officer to check on my new passport is OK before I collect them. She did the test in my presence and says that it is ok. After collection, me and my wife decided to head to JB to buy some mooncakes as Mid-Autumn Festival is two weeks from now. Drove up to ICQ, Woodlands and at the counter, I was told by the Officer that he was not able to clear my passport despite several tries. Told to wait and we waited for a good 15 minutes. Ask the officer again and he replied that he was unable to process my passport and to wait for an escort to escort me to the office where they will do the back end processing. Lan Lan, continue waiting and about 10 mins later, another officer came along and ask me to park my car. Of which I did and alighted, he asked for my car keys with both the passports of me and wife already with him. Followed him to a small office of which, there were a group of 3 already there before us. Was told to wait and to get a seat within the office which we again comply. Shortly, my wife ask to go to the washroom but was brushed aside by the officer at the door that we are to wait inside the office and not suppose to go anywhere else. This is when I start to fume up. I walked to the officer and asked if we have committed any crime, if we have not, why are we treated like criminals and deprive of our basic needs. I must admit that I raised my voice slightly. Upon hearing this, another officer intervened and ordered the officer to escort my wife to the rest room. At this point, I asked the Officer again, what is wrong with my passport. I have just collected my passport from ICA and show him my booking appointment slip together with my old passport. I also shared with him that at collection, the counter lady did a check on my new passport and confirm that it is already activated. If the computer systems at ICQ Woodlands cannot process my passport than it is very much an IT issue which is of no fault of mine. Even so, I rendered my co-operation to them fully but why am I and my wife being treated as if we were convicted criminals. He tried explaining to me that it is for security reasons and so on. I replied that I am fully appreciative of their concerns on security and even when my passport cannot be processed, it does not mean that I am a criminal or a terrorist. Even if they classified me as a suspect, they are not supposed to pass judgement on me until the point that I have been proven guilty. The officer subsequently relented and attended to my case first. At the end, we left that office before the group of 3 who have been in the office before we do. But I still buay song because not a single apology was offered despite the inconvenience created. Was really pissed off by this whole episode.

Paige Hui Fang is a personal friend of mine, my classmate back in secondary school. Her sister is also a junior of mine in my secondary school band and a close friend. Got to know that their older brother is currently battling cancer at the young age of 36. Every dollar helps. Every word of encouragement goes a long way to keeping the morale of their family high and strong. A shoutout to Hui Fang here to stay positive and may your brother overcome this difficult period in his life! A little background story of Hui Fang's brother and his fight against cancer. I am Paige, and my only brother is fighting Stage 4 Bile Duct Cancer at age 36. The cancer has metastasized and has impaired his brain, lungs, stomach, bladder, spine and legs. He is currently bedridden due to a stroke, and has a morphine implant to help him ease the pain. His fight against cancer has been costly and his treatments have essentially wiped out his savings - he was the main breadwinner for his family and has an 8-year-old daughter. I wish to raise funds to help my brother and sister-in-law ease their financial worries with mounting costs as each day passes. His family will have to bear the five-digit palliative care costs, all his other inpatient and outpatient medical bills that are not covered by insurance. As his wife is his sole caregiver and unable to work at the moment, help is also needed for his mortgage, living expenses and his only daughter’s education. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qc-TvGZF9K0 Giveasia Page: https://give.asia/campaign/help-eric-and-his-mounting-treatment-costs-due-to-stage-4-bile-duct-cancer

Singapore Court: Foreign expat escaped jail term after brutal assault on Singaporean student Photo from The Straits Times A foreign expat from England, Alan Benjamin Maybury, has been excused jail term for his brutal assault on a 19-year-old Singaporean student. At 1.30am on the morning of 30 Nov 2014, the 34-year-old former consultant was travelling in a taxi with his Singaporean wife along South Buona Vista Road. 19-year-old Singaporean polytechnic student Lum Kwok Weng was driving in the opposite direction and lost control of his vehicle when he approached a sharp bend and crashed into the taxi. Alan Maybury then got out of the taxi and started shouting expletives at Lum Kwok Weng, and began brutally punching the student in the face several times. He was only stopped when a motorist confronted him and called the police. The victim suffered swelling on the right side of his mouth with a visible cut. However in a weird twist of event, the Deputy Public Prosecutor Mansoor Amir actually spoke on behalf of the aggressor and merely asked for “an appropriate fine”. The Government prosecutor actually faulted the accident for the attack: “It was the accident that caused the accused’s momentary outburst of violence.” Currently, all punching-related road-rage assault cases involving Singaporeans as an aggressor have resulted in a jail term. The Singapore judiciary have always emphasized on a jail sentence to deter road rage incidents, but clearly isn’t applicable in this case. The sentencing of Alan Maybury have fueled discussions of unequal treatment against Singaporeans and preference treatment for foreigners from the Singapore judiciary.

有得救 http://www.channelnewsasia.com/mobile/singapore/made-in-singapore-cancer/1988090.html SINGAPORE: A made-in-Singapore cancer drug is touted to be the first publicly-funded drug candidate discovered and developed in Singapore to make it to trials on humans. In a statement on Thursday (Jul 16), The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School (Duke-NUS), announced the start of the Phase I clinical trial of novel cancer drug candidate, ETC-159. The Phase I clinical trial is meant to evaluate the safety and tolerability of ETC-159 in advanced solid tumours of up to 58 patients, and the first patient was dosed on Jun 18. The first two sites for the trial are the National Cancer Centre Singapore and the National University Hospital, and sites in the US will be added as the trial progresses. The drug is expected to target a range of cancers, including colorectal, ovarian and pancreatic cancers. These cancers are linked to a group of cell signalling pathways known as Wnt signalling, which have been identified to promote cancer growth and spread, said the agencies. ETC-159 acts as an inhibitor of these pathways. "This drug candidate therefore offers a promising novel and targeted cancer therapy that could shape future cancer therapeutic strategies," said A*STAR and Duke-NUS. ETC-159 was discovered and developed through a collaboration between A*STARs Experimental Therapeutics Centre (ETC), Drug Discovery and Development (D3) unit and Duke-NUS since 2009. It was based on the discovery work of Prof David Virshup from Duke-NUS. Prof David Virshup, inaugural Director of the Programme in Cancer and Stem Cell Biology at Duke-NUS, said: As the drug candidate provides a targeted cancer therapy, it could potentially minimise side effects and make cancer treatments more bearable for cancer patients." He added: "It is fitting that Singaporeans might be the first to benefit from this Singapore-developed drug."

SINGAPORE: An Indian student who was left fighting for her life after being gang-raped in New Delhi has arrived at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment. The patient arrived at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit at 9.05am in extremely critical condition, said the hospital's spokesperson on Thursday. The hospital is working with the Indian High Commission, and has requested that the privacy of the patient and the family be respected. The 23-year-old, whose attack sparked protests across India, had been transferred from the Safdarjung hospital in central Delhi to Medanta hospital in Gurgaon, close to the city's international airport, before being flown to Singapore. "The decision was taken this morning at cabinet," a source at Safdarjung told AFP early Thursday. "Her mother and father are with her." The government had earlier announced it was setting up a special commission of inquiry after the gang-rape on December 16 when the woman was allegedly tricked into boarding a bus by six men who then took turns to assault her. The group also attacked her with an iron bar before throwing her out of the vehicle, along with a male companion. Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack and have been remanded in custody. - CNA/AFP/al Poor thing, let us pray for her full recover.
