  1. SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) has confirmed that there was a bomb threat concerning flight SQ001, which originated from San Francisco and arrived at Changi Airport on Sunday afternoon (Nov 22). In a media statement, SIA said that the matter was referred to the authorities. “We regret we are unable to provide details, as it concerns security,” it said. The plane landed safely at about noon, but disembarkation was delayed until around 1.30pm. Passengers then had to wait for nearly two hours to collect their baggage. Passengers were calm, although not much information was given by the airline, one of them told TODAY. “We were held on the tarmac … for about 20 minutes. The captain then made the announcement that the gate was changed,” said Mr Hoe, who declined to give his full name. “We were then parked at some remote area near the airport, and no further information was given, apart from waiting for air traffic control instructions. “At approximately 1.10pm, the captain made the announcement that the plane will be held on the tarmac, and we would be ferried to the terminal by airport bus due to security concerns. “I thought the captain was handling the situation well. No one was panicking on board. We actually didn’t know anything, and everyone thought it was just a normal delay until the announcement was made at 1.10pm. Everyone still remained calm.” -TODAY/al http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/sia-confirms-bomb-threat/2283898.html
  2. Yesterday report from BBC news. The alarming threat of Zika virus By James Gallagher Health editor, BBC News website 21 January 2016 From the section Health The Zika virus, an alarming and disturbing infection that may be linked to thousands of babies being born with underdeveloped brains, is spreading through the Americas. Some areas have declared a state of emergency, doctors have described it as "a pandemic in progress" and some are even advising women in affected countries to delay getting pregnant. Where did Zika come from? Identified in Uganda in 1947, previous outbreaks were confined to a few small areas in Africa, South East Asia and the Pacific Islands. But, in May 2015, it was reported in Brazil. And it has since been reported in: Colombia El Salvador French Guiana Guatemala Haiti Honduras Martinique Mexico Panama Paraguay Puerto Rico Suriname Venezuela How dangerous is it? Deaths are rare and only one in five people infected is thought to develop symptoms. These include: mild fever conjunctivitis (red, sore eyes) headache joint pain a rash There is no vaccine or drug treatment, with patients advised to rest and drink plenty of fluids. But the biggest concern is the impact it could have on babies developing in the womb and the surge in microcephaly. It is when a baby is born with an abnormally small head, as their brain has not developed properly. The severity varies, but it can be deadly if the brain is so underdeveloped that it cannot regulate the functions vital to life. Children that do survive face intellectual disability and development delays. It can be caused by infections such as rubella, substance abuse during pregnancy or genetic abnormalities. Brazil had fewer than 150 cases of microcephaly in the whole of 2014, but there have been about 4,000 since October. The link with Zika has not been confirmed, but some babies who died had the virus in their brain and no other explanation for the surge in microcephaly has been suggested. 4. Something I read from another forum had me spending some time to read up on the 2 supervolcanoes that are showing signs of activity, one of which is relatively nearby: Toba. What is alarming about the Yellowstone park is that Fox TV had reported a year ago that bisons were streaming away from the park as if they are running away from something bad, not sure if they had returned. The fact that it erupts in cycle of 600,000 years to 800,000 years and now is about 640,000 years from last eruption, and also that scientists have confirmed a big magna chamber just below it, is really worrying. Its eruption would really do major damage to USA. http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/story/25159912/animal-exodus-will-yellowstone-super-volcano-erupt http://modernsurvivalblog.com/volcano/how-bad-would-a-yellowstone-eruption-be/ And using that as a reference, our country is definitely within the kill zone if Toba is going to erupt as it is more powerful than the Yellowstone one. It is often said that our country is safe from earthquake, but none studied from that perspective. Perhaps it is time somebody take a serious look how that threat is going to affect our survival. http://planetxnews.com/2015/06/15/indonesias-lake-toba-supervolcano-threatens-global-volcanic-winter-eruption-caused-mass-extinction-75000-years-ago/ http://www.vox.com/2014/9/5/6108169/yellowstone-supervolcano-eruption The bottom line is simply that we do not when the end will come, even the last article I posted has something positive to say. And I hope none would get too alarmed. Just take it as educational read.

  6. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/20/bae-malaysia-idUSWLB0079Z20140220 Feb 20 (Reuters) - BAE Systems expects to submit a leasing proposal for the Eurofighter Typhoon jet to Malaysia next month, as its cash-strapped government mulls over renting, rather than buying fighter aircraft. "The Malaysian government is openly saying they have some issues on finance, and while they're ending subsidies and bringing in new value added tax, it's unlikely there's an appetite to buy Typhoon at this point," BAE's Group Business Development Director Alan Garwood told analysts on Thursday. "What they have done is solicit leasing proposals from every major aerospace company. We will be submitting a leasing proposal next month for Typhoon together with a purchase option and expect to have further discussions later in the year or maybe even early next year around that," he said. Last year Malaysia, which had wanted to buy 18 combat aircraft by 2015, said it was choosing between Boeing's F/A-18, Dassault's Rafale, Saab's Gripen and the Eurofighter Typhoon which is built by BAE, Airbus and Italy's Finmeccanica. Industry sources said in March that the purchase could run into billions of dollars. Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak told Reuters in October the purchase might be delayed.

  9. Yahoo! News rocks http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/singaporesc...-032651925.html By Seah Chiang Nee The current wave of migrant workers from China and India has had an unintended side benefit for Singapore: blurring differences between local Chinese and Malays. The new competition they introduced into the workforce has helped to get these once quarrelling races to put aside old discords and jointly face the common challenge. In the 60s and 70s, ethnic conflicts were a daily story in Singapore generally over who should get a bigger piece of the economic pie. Every issue seemed to revolve around race. The impact of globalisation and the mass inflow of foreigners are helping the Chinese and Malays achieve commonality faster than anything else. It has promoted a common bond

  11. Hi guys, just to illustrate wat happen to me last nite at 230am. I received a call from an unknown oversea no asking for my dad. This guy claims that my dad owes him money and ask us to return him money, he says that he is by the name of 'ah sam' and he just came out from prison. He says that he know where we stay and managed to say out our unit number correctly, but he did not mention any blk or street name though. Then he kept telling us not to play with him, as he know where we stay and hinted that he will come our hse to disturb us. I was quite angry and scolded him in vulgarilty. And i feel that he suddenly felt abit shocked. After afew mins of arguement, he changed his statement. He said that we dont owe him any money but he wants to take some 'kopi money' from us to spend. We abruptly end the conversations by saying we have no money and wanted to hang up. Towards the end of the conversation, he ask us, " you dont even have 100-200??" we just said " no!' and hang up on him. However he still call us again after we hang up but we did not pick up. In total, he called us 3 times, once my mum pick up, 2nd time she pass to me, 3rd time we nv pick up. The whole conversation is in hokkien, but as my hokkien is not fluent and i dun understand completely, he speaked mandarin in the end as i could not make out wat he is saying. We are thinking of going to make a police report later just for safety reason. Bros out here any comments on this situation?

  13. SINGAPORE: Over 130 passengers and crew from a SilkAir flight have been evacuated following a bomb threat. MI 541 was due to depart from the Philippines' Cebu airport at 1.30pm on Tuesday for Singapore. But airport authorities received news of the suspected bomb minutes before take-off. A hotline caller to Channel NewsAsia described seeing police surrounding the plane. "We treat every incident seriously and will take all necessary measures to ensure that the safety and security of our passengers are not compromised," said a SilkAir spokesman. The passengers have been served meals and refreshments and SilkAir said they are also being updated on the situation as and when there are new developments. All baggage and cargo have also been offloaded and are in the process of another round of security checks. The plane has been moved to an isolation bay at the airport for police inspections. 14. http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking...ry_334104.html Charged with threat on MP By Elena Chong 'I am willing to apologise to the MP (Denise Phua, left) and to the police as well. I have not been receiving any help for one year,' the accused said. A RAG-and-bone man was hauled to court on Wednesday for threatening to cause hurt to Jalan Besar GRC Member of Parliament Denise Phua. Ng Kim Ngweng, 49, allegedly committed the criminal intimidation by telling a Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports customer service officer over the phone: 'I cannot take this anymore and I don't know what I'll do one day, I can't be sure on that .... How can you don't hit her? I get angry when I see her so how can I don't hit her?'' The alleged offence took place at his Crawford Lane home on Jan 12 - a day after Yio Chu Kang MP Seng Han Thong was set on fire by a former cabby at a community event. In the dock, a tanned-looking Ng pleaded to the court to release him for a few days so that he could clear up the newspapers at home which might pose a fire hazard. He said he had no one to bail him out and could not afford if the personal bond was high. Ng told District Judge Toh Yung Cheong he did not intimidate anyone. 'I was just making a complaint to the Prime Minister. I was given this number to call MCYS and I was told that I could say anything. So I just voiced out my opinion,'' he said. He admitted he had said the wrong thing and was sorry. 'I am willing to apologise to the MP and to the police as well. I have not been receiving any help for one year,' he added. Deputy Public Prosecutor Imran Abdul Hamid objected to the personal bond, saying he was a flight risk, and that police had waited for him the whole day on Tuesday. While the DPP was talking, Ng talked non-stop in Mandarin, prompting the judge to say that from the way he was acting, it appeared that he was suffering from some mental illness. The DPP, however, could not confirm if he had a psychiatric history although Ng had been to the Institute of Mental Health before. Bail of $50,000 was set. The case was adjourned to Feb 17.
