  1. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned its citizens residing in six Southeast Asian countries of a possible attack, sending out an advisory to its embassies on Sep. 13. The six countries are Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Myanmar, Associated Press (AP) reported. Urged citizens to follow local news and information In its advisory, Japan urged its citizens to pay close attention to local news and information and use caution "for the time being", AP reported. They urged their citizens in the countries to stay away from religious facilities and crowds as they had received information on "increased risks such as suicide bombing". According to The Vibes, an overseas safety information posted on Japan's embassy in Malaysia also urged their citizens to avoid visiting places that are "easily targeted by terrorism". According to the alert, these places include "western-related" facilities, such as restaurants, hotels, and tourist facilities. Countries puzzled Responding to the advisory, several nations said that they had no information of such threats. AP reported that a spokesperson for Thailand's Foreign Ministry said Japan had not revealed the origin of the warning and that the Japanese Embassy could not provide any further details other than that the threat was “not specific to Thailand.” The deputy spokesman for Thai police Kissana Pathanacharoen also said their security agencies have no information about the possible threat mentioned by Japan. Similarly, Malaysian police chief Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said they have not received any information or detected any security threats, but will nonetheless step up its surveillance, according to BFM News. The Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs said they were not aware of any information about an elevated threat level. Meanwhile, Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah denied that any warning was sent to Japanese citizens in the country. Japan's foreign ministry refused to provide the source of information or reveal whether the advisory was shared with other countries. https://mothership.sg/2021/09/japan-warns-citizens-southeast-asia-terror-attacks/ Saw someone posted a screenshot of this message in Japanese from the Japanese Embassy in Singapore. There was also a lowkey warning of possible attacks being carried out in Singapore on Straits Times or some other publication few days back. Let's be alert and vigilant.

  3. Gunmen have shot dead 12 people at the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in an apparent militant Islamist attack. Four of the magazine's well-known cartoonists, including its editor, were among those killed, as well as two police officers. A major police operation is under way to find three gunmen who fled by car. President Francois Hollande said there was no doubt it had been a terrorist attack "of exceptional barbarity". The masked attackers opened fire with assault rifles in the office and exchanged shots with police in the street outside before escaping by car. They later abandoned the car in Rue de Meaux, northern Paris. Witnesses said they heard the gunmen shouting "we have avenged the Prophet Muhammad". The number of attackers was initially reported to be two, but French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve later said they were hunting three "criminals". Charlie Hebdo editor Stephane Charbonnier, 47, had received death threats in the past and was living under police protection. French media have named the three other cartoonists killed in the attack as Cabu, Tignous and Wolinski. The attack took place during the magazine's daily editorial meeting. At least seven people were wounded in the attack, with several in critical condition. The satirical weekly has courted controversy in the past with its irreverent take on news and current affairs. It was fire-bombed in November 2011 a day after it carried a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad. The latest tweet on Charlie Hebdo's account was a cartoon of the Islamic State militant group leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. People had been "murdered in a cowardly manner", President Hollande told reporters at the scene. "We are threatened because we are a country of liberty," he added, appealing for national unity. US President Barack Obama has condemned the "horrific shooting", offering to provide any assistance needed "to help bring these terrorists to justice". UK Prime Minister David Cameron said in a tweet: "The murders in Paris are sickening. We stand with the French people in the fight against terror and defending the freedom of the press." The Arab League and Al-Azhar mosque, Egypt's top Islamic institution, have also condemned the attack. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30710883
  4. A banquet operations manager who took to the wheel despite having been banned from the road for a year was called the "ultimate road terror'' by a district judge on Wednesday. While driving under a year-long ban, Tan Yang Chin, 34, was involved in a hit-and-run accident along an expressway which resulted in a taxi overturning and injuring three people. The accident happened along East Coast Parkway (ECP) at 1.14am on Feb 7 this year. Tan was jailed for 13 months and banned from driving for eight years after admitting to causing grievous hurt to taxi passenger Wang Jing, 28, a Chinese national; driving under a ban; and failing to render assistance. A district court heard that Tan was speeding along ECP when he fell asleep and hit the centre divider. He woke up and veered his car towards the extreme left lane, and hit the back of Mr Goh Chee Kwang's taxi. Mr Goh, 51, was then taking Ms Wang and another female passenger to the airport. He lost control of the vehicle which then hit the road barrier and overturned. Tan sped away from the scene and later left his car unattended about 1km away along ECP before Xilin Avenue. Ms Wang was taken to hospital for fractures to her pelvis. Both vehicles were badly damaged. Calling him the "ultimate road terror'', District Judge Low Wee Ping said Tan had been fined and banned from driving for 12 months in April last year for drink driving. Two months before his disqualification ended, he drove at least four times. Two charges of causing hurt to the taxi driver and the other passenger and failing to stop after the accident were considered during his sentencing.
