  4. Hi all I've a small (2-3cm) tear in the driver's seat, leather. Am wondering if there's any way or place to make this small repair? Appreciate your kind advise. TQ
  5. I have a slight tear near the rim on the tyre at the front driver side. It is about 0.5 cm deep and 3 cm long. My tyre is 1.5 years old and done about 25,000 km. Should I change the tyre?
  6. Many people are forced to buy used cars for the following reasons with the COE being so expensive, and high downpayment The first problem that used car owners need to solve is therefore the issue of maintenance. Car owners need to identify good workshops and also learn the ropes of keeping their cars in good condition. A used car tends to have more wear and tear than a brand new car. Beside the normal maintenance requirements, used car owners also have to get to know their cars well. This involves listening out for any abnormal sounds, learning to describe these sounds (a whole new vocabulary comes into use eg clicking, screeching, whirring when stationary, high pitched, groaning when turning, etc) to their mechanics. They must also trust their mechanics' advice - is an overhaul required or just a minor replacement of parts. This is often a source of great stress. When they don't trust their mechanics, they often turn to friends who may or may not give good advice (and always end up confusing the car owner. Since new car prices do not appear to be coming down in the near future, it can be expected that more and more people will look at buying used cars; especially first-time car buyers. What considerations may be helpful to ease their car ownership experience and reduce their fear of being sold a lemon?

  8. Driving an old coe Honda currently. Always had these questions in mind so perhaps someone can clarify my doubts. I've tried searching through this forum but to no avail. Please pardon my inexperience or ignorance, if any. 1. Is it true that changing gears too quickly (i.e. at low rpms) will shorten the life of the gearbox? If that's the case, wont I have to rev to higher rpms, so as to preserve the gearbox? 2. If i constantly rev at higher rpms, wont i cause more wear and tear to the engine? 3. What is the definition of 'dragging gear'? to constantly drive at high rpms without changing gear or to drive at a high gear at low speeds and low rpm? Question 3 is due to me reading other forums on this wear and tear issue, and different ppl giving different definitions. Duno which to believe. I used to think that dragging gear means low gear high rpm.
  9. Siao! This is what the article is suggesting! I want my greens! http://publichouse.sg/categories/topstory/...parents-had-won? What would S'pore be like if our grandparents had won? Written by Andrew Loh Cemeteries now occupy less than 0.95% of land - do our grandchildren really need this? "Do you want me to look after our dead grandparents or do you want me to look after your grandchildren?" asked then-Cabinet Minister Lim Kim San in the 1960s, and Minister of State Tan Chuan-Jin in 2012. What would Singapore be like if our grandparents had won? For one, we wouldn't have the clear, grassy slopes of Fort Canning Park for WOMAD and Ballet Under the Stars. No, in its place, we'd have a messy Fort Canning Cemetery crowded with 19th-century graves of governors, administrators, sailors, traders, teachers, many young women and children - some even buried two to a grave. Instead of Bishan housing estate, home to 91,298 people at last count, the Cantonese Kwong Wai Siew Association might still have their Peck San Theng (Jade Hill Pavilion) built in 1870 - the largest cemetery in Singapore, with 75,234 graves eventually exhumed. Likewise parts of Tiong Bahru, Henderson, Redhill, Serangoon, Jalan Bukit Merah would still have cemeteries where public housing now stands. A Jewish cemetery dating from 1838 or 1841 would stand in place of Orchard MRT station, its small plot housing 160 graves. And instead of the shops at Velocity, Novena Square, Phoenix Park, we might see Jewish tombs designed by the famous Italian sculptor Cavalieri Rodolfo Nolli in the Thomson Road Jewish Cemetery, in use from 1904 onwards. Instead of KK Women's and Children's Hospital, on the land between Bukit Timah, Kampong Java, Halifax and Hooper Road, we'd have a flood-prone Bukit Timah Cemetery packed with Catholic and Protestant graves from 1865. Neither would we have Ngee Ann City, Mandarin Hotel, Cathay Cineleisure and Wisma Atria. Instead, in the heart of Orchard Road would sit a 28-hectare burial ground Tai Shan Ting, managed by the Teochew Ngee Ann Kongsi. And of course, we wouldn't have those clear, flat fields along Upper Serangoon Road, a space now emptying itself out in preparation for new condominiums and residential towns. In its place, we might still have the 10.5-hectare early 20th-century Bidadari Cemetary, with its delicate marble sculptures and tombstones etched with different languages in the Christian, Muslim and Hindu sections. One might conclude that the 1960s generation did the right thing. They were self-sacrificial enough (or, were forced) to forgo their ancestors' graves so that their grandchildren could have the space for housing, shopping, infrastructure, all these modern amenities we now enjoy. Especially for those of us living and working in Orchard, Novena, Tiong Bahru, Henderson, Redhill, Serangoon, Jalan Bukit Merah, this giving up of graveyard space for modern development seems good and necessary. Burial grounds now occupy less than 0.95% of Singapore's land area But the fact is, back in 1967, burial grounds only made up 1.1% (619 hectares) of land area on Singapore Island, and by 1982, after the clearing of Bukit Timah Cemetery, Peck San Theng (Bishan) etc, it was down to 534 hectares (approx 0.95% of Singapore's land area). Furthermore, this 0.95% figure doesn't even include the Thomson Road Jewish Cemetery (cleared by 1985), 10.5 hectare Bidadari Cemetery (cleared by 2006), and 7-hectare Kwong Hou Sua in Woodlands (cleared by 2009). Is it really necessary to wipe clean these remaining precious spaces that take up less than 0.95% of Singapore's land area? And if Singapore desperately needs more land, why aren't we first using the land area currently occupied by Orchid Country Club, Raffles Country Club, Singapore Island Country Club, Warren Golf & Country Club, and the golf and country clubs in Changi, Jurong, Keppel, Marina Bay, Kranji, Selatar Base, Sembawang, Tanah Merah? Perhaps in the past, it was deemed necessary for our grandparents to relinquish their burial grounds for public housing and the development of the shopping belt in Orchard and Novena. But how much is enough, and what is the optimum point between preserving tangible heritage and history, and allowing the land to be taken over by even more modern amenities, condominiums and wider roads? This concerns all of us and future generations, and we need proper, genuine discussion before bulldozers irreversibly destroy these old spaces. Minister of State Tan Chuan-Jin's argument hinges on Mr Lim Kim San's question, but asking Singaporeans to choose between our dead grandparents and our grandchildren is a severe misrepresentation of the issue. I strongly suspect our grandchildren will not live in misery for want of that extra 0.95% of land. In fact, I hope our grandchildren will be more creative in their urban design, with efficient use of land and infrastructure, without resorting to the destruction of the few cemeteries left. And if current public sentiment is anything to judge the future by, I suspect our grandchildren will enjoy walking in a protected, conserved Bukit Brown, seeing and touching history in tangible forms, and will one day ask, what would Singapore be like if our grandparents had won? That is, if we don't win today. By Lisa Li Lisa Li is a member of SOS Bukit Brown. The Community of Bukit Brown calls for a moratorium on all plans for Bukit Brown, until there is clarity over long-term plans for the area and discussions over alternatives have been exhausted. 10. Seems like after the NK old man kaput, the knives are out between his two offsprings. My guess is when the old man was still around, relationship between the sons was at best frosty and after he meets his maker, it is open warfare now. Given how things are heading, the big bro who was the old man's original choice is not likely to exert any influence back home since fatty has been promoted relentlessly as the superb successor by his backers. Still interesting to see such events unfolding though... From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1177331/1/.html Kim brother says N.Korea heading for collapse Posted: 17 January 2012 1619 hrs TOKYO: The eldest brother of North Korea's new leader says reforms needed to avert the collapse of the country's economy will lead to the end of its Stalinist regime, according to a book to be published this week. Kim Jong-Nam, the half brother of Kim Jong-Un who took control of the hermit state on the death of their father last month, says the military has become so powerful it will step in and take over. The comments come in a book by Yoji Gomi, a Japanese journalist who says he built a relationship with Jong-Nam after the pair met in Beijing in 2004. "My father Kim Jong-Il and Me" will be published in Japan by Bungeishunju on Friday. "North Korea is very unstable," Jong-Nam told Gomi, who interviewed him at length in the Chinese territory of Macau last year. "My father governed the country with the backing of the military, but the power of the military has become too strong," he said in Korean. "If the succession ends in failure, the military will wield the real power for sure." In the book, based on email exchanges and interviews, Jong-Nam says North Korea's troubled state-managed economy presented the regime with a dilemma. "It is obvious that (the) economy will collapse without reforms, but the reforms will lead to a crisis of the collapse of the regime," Jong-Nam said in the interview carried out before the death of his father Kim Jong-Il on December 17. He also claimed that his inexperienced brother Jong-Un was likely to be merely a symbol used by ruling elites to maintain their grip on power. "Anyone with normal thinking would find it difficult to tolerate three generations of hereditary succession," he said an email, which Gomi says was sent on January 3. "I question how a young heir with two years (of training as a successor) would be able to inherit... absolute power," he said. "It is likely that the existing power elites will succeed my father by keeping the young successor as a symbol." Jong-Nam has lived in virtual exile in China for many years after falling out of favour with his father, who in turn inherited the rule of the impoverished country from his own father. Two years ago and with his health rapidly deteriorating, Kim Jong-Il moved Jong-Un -- believed to be in his late 20s -- into the position of designated successor, giving him military posts and raising his profile. Jong-Nam did not directly respond to questions over whether he attended the elaborate funeral and memorial ceremony for his father, but Japanese media have said he visited Pyongyang after learning about his father's death. Gomi said Jong-Nam may still take the reins of power in the secretive state with the backing of Beijing, which frets that a collapse in the regime could send millions of starving North Koreans over its border and create nuclear havoc on the peninsula. "He has been protected by the Chinese side," said Gomi, a senior staff writer at the Tokyo Shimbun who was previously based in Beijing and in Seoul. "If the Jong-Un regime collapses, (China) appears to be planning to send him to Pyongyang and make him become the next leader," he said. Gomi said he had decided to go ahead with publishing the book despite requests from Jong-Nam for a delay. - AFP/cc
  11. Hi all, my seatbelt is fraying and causing difficulties in pulling out. Anyone knows where can i change it? (recon/new, sg/jb) thanks alot! :)
  12. My current RIR seems to stop wearing ie the thread groove/depth seem to stay the same for the past 2 years!! ..... i bought them 2nd hand (previous owner changed car after using these RIR for 2-3 months before he sold them to me, tyres have never been tracked before and after I bought them) My 'theory' why they stop wearing: rubber hardened when tyres reached around 1 year old and therefore hardly wear out.... the tyres dont show any sign of minor cracks, so are they safe enough for dialy normal driving in the dry? ...... the grip seems ok for normal use. Thank you advance for any bro's advice (my yearly mileage is about 20k km)
  13. Just got a $30 parking fine notes. The reason is "COUPON NO(S) WITH RELEVANT TABS NOT TORN OFF" This is because I just folded (did not tear off) the small piece of paper in the data/time hole of parking coupon. Just as a reminder for all member here.
  14. Had a very unpleasant experience today with the ADs. Bought a 2nd hand car 3months ago. It is having 5years of AD warranty. So to play safe before buying the car, I went with the 2nd hand dealer to the AD for servicing and complain that the brakes were noisy. Had an agreement with the 2nd hand dealer that if anything wrong they have to pay before i accept the car. After the servicing, it was stated that everything is ok, the brakes are fine and the brakes is "like that one". I thought since its from a reputable AD, okie I took it. 3 months later, the brakes noise gets louder, went to the service center again. This time, the advisor was saying, oh... your rotor disc is very rough thats why there is this noise and its classified as wear and tear parts. They advise to resurface and polish it up and needs to be charged $300 bucks. Then I was annoyed, ask them how can rotor disc considered as wear and tear? If its brake pad, ok I accept it, but not Rotor Disc? The advisor immediately say ok charge $180 will do. So lan lan ask them to do it first., Immediately, I wrote an email in and immediately the manager called me within 2 hrs, still telling me its a wear and tear item due to sand or particles went in and cause it to be rough, all the Craps. Sibei hot liao, than ask he why it was not discovered 3 months ago when I have already complained about it? He than lan lan, tell me okie, why not another 50% discount. $80plus. Haiz, since the manager also working for the company, I gave in and said okie. In the end, I ask the manager, when companies stated Extended warranty 5 years, engine etc, but exclude wear and tear items, how they define clearly what is wear and tear? He say oh definitely the engine will be under warranty. But I ask him if a person always ram and play his car for 4 years and before the warranty ends, the engine died, is it covered? He say "No, as its considered as wear and tear". Than I told him in this case its difficult to justify rite? In the end comes the favourite phase, warranty is' like that one' But I have to give credit to the AD staff for their service and promptness. Its only that the warranty terms is not clearly defined especially for 5years term.
  15. Just to highlight my experience at ICA building carpark. I fetched someone to collect her passport. Parked my car in a lot at the public carpark and waited in car - windows down and engine stopped. Auntie passed by (they super on), and asked me to display parking coupon. I was reading newspaper inside. I am not arguing that she was wrong, because technically she was correct. However, when I do the same in HDB carpark lots, no warden has asked me to display coupon. Why the different practice? Anyone has the same experience?
  16. When you guys get your credit cards, do you tear away or keep the PIN notification letter? I will tear it away immediately so as to not tempt myself from withdrawing on credit... What do you do with them?
  17. I hate vehicles waiting at the side of roads with engines turned on! Why don't they just turn off their engines? Especially at night, when it's cool... Does starting and stopping your engine more frequently increase wear & tear? What are the ways to counter this problem? (change engine oil more frequently?)
  18. Hi people, I've noticed a slight tear in one of my front leather seat (passenger side) recently. About 2.5cm long. Don't know what caused it though? The tear is not deep. From what I can see, it's only on the surface. But line is obvious enough to be seen. Am afraid that it will detrioriate further later. Anything I can do to salvage it (other than putting a piece of ugly tape over it)? Or having it changed, caused that'll caused mucho $$. Rgds AC
  19. My civic vti (auto) is nearly 4 years old and i can experience some signs of wear and tear already. - engine getting nosier - tyres sound getting more obvious (i dunno is sound insulation problem or tyres problem) - gear shifting not as responsive (sometimes when i accelerate , the drop in RPM while changing gear is not so obvious anymore, compared to my dad's camry) however it's still a joy to be inside the civic I think these type of wear of tear is unavoidable..but what are the possible ways of minimizing it?
