  1. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/despite-longer-hours/1204752.html Survey found that singapore teachers work an average of 48 hours a week - 10 hours longer than the global average - of which 17 hours are used for teaching, and only 5 hours a week are spent on administrative duties (I suppose this includes CCA and meetings). Is this even believable?? Or because this is just average number and the standard deviation is very large? I know some teachers complain 60 hr+ spent on work a week. And one mindless meeting is already 2 hr at least. On the other hand, only lower secondary school teachers were surveyed - so how can this justify being generalized for the entire population of teachers nation-wide? MOE of course puts a positive spin to it, and says our teachers work extra because they want to do the best for students (and not because of extra admin stuff dreamed up by them?) What is interesting is that, up north: https://sg.news.yahoo.com/malaysian-teachers-spend-29pc-time-admin-says-study-005400214.html "On average, Malaysian teachers spend 17 hours each week teaching, compared to the survey average of 19 hours. In comparison, they spend six hours per week planning and preparing lessons, and seven hours per week marking and correcting work." That means only 4 hours on admin duties. All sounds very comparable, actually, maybe due to similarities in education systems inherited from same british colonial history.

  3. are you screwed? http://www.pinoysg.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38021 --- A discussion thread was started in a local Filipino forum teaching Filipinos working in Singapore on the ways to withdraw their Singapore PR. Filipinos are one of the largest group of foreigners working in Singapore with the majority of them working in the healthcare, service and IT industries. Partly due to their strong command of the English language, it
  4. I went to About.com and they got some hints on how to teach kids ride a bike. I think Kianbeng's earlier idea of dismantling the pedals is a good one. Actually, we should buy a kid bike but as the shop uncle to remove the pedals. Yes. REMOVE THE PEDALS. Can add on later. Have the kid push the bike around as a toddler. Confirm will push both feet off and roll around. You have let your kid conquer the skill of balancing. For older kid, use this video. I find it very good. For adults also very good. The thing is to roll down first. Grass softer to land but if on hard ground, choose a place with a gentler gradient. Later you add pedaling, then straight line riding then turning.. All are documented here. http://www.ibike.org/education/teaching-kids.htm Of course there are some products if you all like to use. It is listed on the site. But trust me. The skirt wheels does not inspire confidence. The way I look at this program from iBike, 10 days is all it takes to ride a bike from human being aged 7-65.

  6. More mid-career professionals consider joining teaching force http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin.../395181/1/.html Looks like MOE embarking on a recruitment spree, taking advantage of the downturn to coax more people to take up teaching. But reading the article, I wonder if again, they are getting the wrong type of people?? Or just trying to use the current situation to quickly make up the numbers? Even before securing the teaching post, the interviewees are already "complaining" about pay cut, loss of managerial priveleges, etc. Seems that they will get a minimum of 4-week real teaching experience in real school before committing to NIE... should send these jokers to neighbourhood normal acad or normal tech to gauge their "under-utilised talent and experience" (to quote one interviewee...)
  7. Now when I asked my son when is he going to do his homework, he told me "ONE DAY" he will do it. When I asked him how come he did badly for his exams, he told me "education is long term, don't just judge it now." When I asked him why he lost the family dog by not closing the door he told me "What to do, its happened." When I asked him why did he play with fire and burn down the whole house, he told me " It is an honest mistake, let's move on." When I asked him why didn't he spend more time on his school work, he told me "he is busy "buying" support from teachers and "fixing" his classmates." When I asked him why didn't he help the old lady crossing the road, he told me "She should walk with her eyes open, if not she shouldn't be getting out of the house, it is risky." Maybe I shouldn't be over worried about him, he seems to has the potential of a "GREAT LEADER". - JinGanKor

Where can i buy those "poles" or "cones" so that i can use it to help her learn parking? 2. Where can i buy the "L" sign? Is it illegal for non driving instructor to put up the "L" sign? 3. With the solar films, the new driver (triangular sign) display is not that visible at the back. Also, how do you stick the sign on the front/rear windscreen without damaging the solar film? 4.
