Was this angmoh being paid to speak so that it will not deter other gamblers from joining the Bankrupt Q..... Feb 16, 2010 No link between gambling and bankruptcy I REFER to last Tuesday's commentary by Dr Derek da Cunha, 'Too early to assess the impact of casinos'. Unfortunately, Dr da Cunha's evaluation of the social impacts of gaming in the United States is extremely misguided. He cites flawed and outdated research studies that do not paint an accurate picture of our industry, or the innumerable positive benefits that casinos bring to communities nationwide. First, a mountain of peer-reviewed research thoroughly disproves the link between gambling and bankruptcy. For example, a United States Treasury Department study found 'no connection between state bankruptcy rates and either the extent of or introduction of casino gambling'. Also, it is well documented that gambling does not lead to increased crime. In fact, the Public Sector Gaming Study Commission, a bipartisan collection of state legislators, found 'no link between gaming, particularly casino-style gaming, and crime'. Finally, recent research demonstrates that, while the introduction of casinos to a community may initially lead to an increase in gambling disorders, prevalence rates eventually return to normal. Indeed, a study published in 2008 found no correlation between casino proximity and the prevalence of pathological gambling at all. Dr da Cunha failed to mention what our industry has meant to its more than 357,000 employees and their communities. Perhaps Massachusetts resident George Monte says it best: 'I worked for a casino in Indiana for 31/2 years in security and I saw what it did for the town and community - the jobs it created.' The introduction of casino gaming in Singapore has long been highly anticipated, and for good reason. If casinos achieve the level of success they have enjoyed in the US, the people of Singapore will not be disappointed. Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jr President and CEO American Gaming Association
