Quote from Yahoo News: 2 shophouses partially collapse at Syed Alwi Road, 6 injured Two shophouses partially collapsed at Syed Alwi Road in the early hours of Tuesday (8 Oct). According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the team was alerted to the incident at 1.30am. "Upon arrival, SCDF immediately commenced a search of the area to ascertain if anyone was trapped under the debris. Two search dogs and a drone were also deployed to augment the search operation," they wrote. As passersby reported hearing a loud blast, a firefighting machine was deployed as a precautionary measure, to disperse any potential build up of flammable gases using its water mist spray function. Firefighters rescued a victim who was trapped on the second storey of the affected shophouse at 84 Syed Alwi Road using a ladder. No one was found trapped under the debris, said SCDF. SCDF shared, "Two persons were assessed by paramedics for minor injuries and conveyed to Singapore General Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Four other persons were also assessed for minor injuries but they declined to be sent to the hospital." CNA reported that, according to the Building and Construction Authority, the cause of the incident is "suspected" to be a gas explosion.

Uncle Syed helps out . . . . . Stomper Sufian shared how his uncle Syed and aunt had an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience when they helped a woman deliver a baby in their car today (Jul 22). Syed had recounted the incident -- which occurred at around 9.40am -- on Facebook, which Sufian alerted Stomp to. In a phone interview with Stomp, Syed said that he had been seeing a doctor at Bukit Panjang and was about to leave, when he and his wife noticed the pregnant woman lying by the side of the road. She was experiencing labour pains. The woman's husband then told Syed that they were waiting for a cab to get them to the hospital. However, they were either ignored or turned down by taxi drivers despite having waited for an hour. Syed then offered to drive the couple to Singapore General Hospital (SGH). In his Facebook post, he described how he tried rushing them to the hospital. Due to the morning traffic, they were unable to reach their destination on time, and the woman ended up giving birth to a girl in Syed's car. "A new life was born inside MY car," wrote Syed in his Facebook post. He also praised his wife for pushing aside her fear of blood and dislike of "slimy substances" to help the woman deliver her baby. Syed told Stomp, "We were so happy and thankful when the baby started to cry," adding that they had been worried for the baby's condition. "The husband didn't know what to say other than thank you, and I told him it's okay as long as both mother and baby were safe." Syed, his wife and the couple reached SGH about 15 minutes later, where both mother and daughter received medical attention. Sufian told Stomp:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCwDDhy8ngc A grisly find at Syed Alwi Road at the Jalan Besar area. A dismembered body was found stuffed in a suitcase. A fruit stall owner told Channel NewsAsia that past 5pm on Wednesday (June 11), an old man asked two tourists for help in pushing a trolley with a suitcase. When they touched the bag, their hands were stained with blood. It prompted them to ask the shopowner owner for permission to wash their hands on his premises. A "karang guni" man, who collects old and discarded items to sell, reportedly found a body in the suitcase when he opened it. Several policemen were seen at the scene this evening. Police said they received a call for assistance at 6:04 pm, and that an upper body without both legs was found in a piece of luggage. Police have classified the case as unnatural death and an investigation is underway. Channel NewsAsia understands the victim is believed to be male.
