  1. 6 killed, a baby seriously injured. https://edition.cnn.com/australia/live-news/sydney-mall-attack-updates-intl/index.html Six people have been killed in a mass stabbing at a busy shopping center in Sydney, Australian police said. Several others have been wounded and are being treated in hospital. The attacker, who police said acted alone, was shot dead at the scene by a lone officer. Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the officer a hero, saying "no doubt that she saved lives through her action."
  2. It's been three years since I flew.. I had to dust off my bags, find my chargers, charge my laptop and even find the bags used for packing.. and oh, travel convertors... Thankfully, my credit card gave me a limo, woohoo So, I accumulated enough credit and funding from my research to get a business class ticket, well at least part of the way. So I am going to a conference in Queenstown, nope, not in SG, but in NZ! There's no direct flight so I chose an open jaw ticket, SIN - CHC Christchurch CHC - ZQN Queenstown Then my return is ZQN- SYD Sydney Where I get a day to do my banking, eat my eyeballs out and then fly home So I'll share what kind of food can I get in this short stint, and also some pics of the new lounges along the way and the refurbished cabins too. So I understand the lounges have been renovated and it does look a lot more spiffy... most times, the best I can do is the Gold member lounge, which is meant for economy passengers.. so this is a really nice experience indeed.. the business lounge is next level as expected but it’s surprisingly full actually The other thing is this element of weather and in particular, storms... En route, there are current weather warnings of a cyclone, earthquakes off the North Island, which make my folks and family worried, but I have to tell them that the North Island is very large and very far from the South Island where I'll be. It's like them getting worried when I was studying in Sydney and there's a forest fire in NSW...

(Image courtesy of Obayashi) SHUGO TAMURA, Nikkei staff writerAugust 25, 2022 03:03 JST TOKYO -- Japanese general contractor Obayashi said Wednesday that it has received an order to construct the world's tallest timber building in Australia, a 182-meter sustainable skyscraper combining wood and other materials to house the Sydney headquarters of software company Atlassian. The 39-story Atlassian Central structure will stand adjacent to the Central rail station in Sydney's Tech Central innovation and technology precinct. The mixed-use tower with a floor space of 75,000 square meters also will be home to a hotel and retail stores. Obayashi's joint venture with local construction company Built has been commissioned by Australian real estate firm Dexus to build the tower, which is slated for completion in 2026. The 182-meter sustainable skyscraper planned in Sydney will be the world's tallest timber building. (Image courtesy of Obayashi) The building, to carry the highest level of environmental certification, will be made of steel-reinforced, low-carbon concrete from the basement to the seventh floor, with cross-laminated timber and a steel exoskeleton used for higher floors. The project aims to limit carbon dioxide emissions during construction -- from materials procurement to completion -- to less than half of those for a conventional building. For operation, the tower is expected to be powered by 100% renewable energy. Obayashi is among the Japanese companies tapping the trend of building wooden skyscrapers in Australia, where interest in achieving net-zero emissions is strong and fire safety codes are less strict than in their home country. Sumitomo Forestry and NTT Urban Development are creating a hybrid timber building in Melbourne with U.S. real estate firm Hines.
  4. Any engineers here? Is this still structurally safe to stay? Say if suay suay happens in SG, government declare HDB building still safe for 3/4 of residents to stay, but the other 1/4 got some works need to be carried out to be declared safe again.. will you sell or stay put?? https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/dec/26/opal-tower-cracks-nsw-government-urgent-investigation
  5. So who has not been to Oz and in particular Sydney? Blue mountains? Harbor bridge? Koalas? I think most of us have seen them all .. How about a chill vacation where one simply sits back, and have more caffeine in five days than one does in a month? Try some of the nicest food and simply kick back and absorb the atmosphere whilst not doing too much? Let me show you a few places to eat, drink some java and do something different ... First, what's Sydney without Pho? It's as ubiquitous as chicken rice in SG... with so many migrants from Vietnam over the years, it's no surprise that they do a good pho soup. Add good quality Aussie beef and you have a marvellous combination. Madam Nhu: How about ending off a nice day with a brilliant sunset:

  16. Just came back from Sydney on a business trip, lots of changes since graduated there 10 years ago.... 1) Tarago Taxi (Spore named Estima) 2) The Hotel that I stayed charge AUD$200 for lost of ticket, gee... 3) Spotted a new Lancer on the road, I believe this one built in Aussie 4) The Petrol price had went sky high, almost double than 10 yrs ago, now it is more even expensive than in Spore (AUD 1.299 = ~1.6 Spore). But their price fluctuate throughout the week, usually Tue is the lowest, I bought one tank at 1.199, then the next day go back to 1.299. Also as I mentioned in other post, the sydneysider is very polite on the road, it is unfortunately to me : 1) didn't see any road hogger 2) didn't see any switch lane without signal 3) didn't see any should give way but dash out in front of you then drive slowly 4) didn't see any doing parking without signal

  18. Saw lots of VW Golf in Sydney especially around the busy town area near the central railway station. Toyota and Mit dominate the jap cars and Hyundai the korean and Audi, VW the euro cars beside the bread and butter of Holden and Ford of Australia. No skoda seen anywhere maybe in the future and surprising saw a seat ibiza. Was there on holiday, did not drive but travel on public transport and trains plus lots of footwork though. Just share my observation to the member here.
