His spending spree included a Breitling watch worth almost S$6,000, a pair of Balenciaga shoes and a pouch, and S$400 Chanel earrings. He also bought an Apple iPad mini and an iPhone. On Thursday (June 20), Ding Zhipeng, a Chinese national, was sentenced to nine months and six weeks’ jail and fined S$12,000. The 28-year-old pleaded guilty in the State Courts to one charge of criminal breach of trust, one charge under the Casino Control Act and one charge under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act. Thirteen similar charges were taken into consideration for sentencing. The court heard that Ding had been employed at RWS since July 2017, and looked after casino cash chips kept in the float — that is, trays where the chips were kept — of his assigned gaming tables. He began stealing casino cash chips from the float sometime in May or June 2018, when there were no patrons at his gaming table. His offences were finally discovered on Nov 12, 2018, when a surveillance operator spotted Ding taking S$1,000 cash chips from the float. The operator then called the police. Officers seized 72 chips and S$3,000 in cash from Ding’s rental room when they searched it later that evening. He surrendered another two chips that he had kept inside his pants when he was arrested. Deputy Public Prosecutor Tay Jia En noted that Ding had misappropriated a large amount over an extended period of time. He showed premeditation by stealing the chips when his supervisor was not looking, the prosecutor added, and he used a friend to cash out the chips as he would attract suspicion by doing it himself. In mitigation, Ding’s lawyer John Koh told the court that his client was stressed and “resorted to improper channels to make extra money”, while working long hours to make money for his family back in China. Most of the money was eventually recovered as well, Mr Koh added.

Ansar Anwar, a Malaysian, broke into a Sakae Sushi outlet at Parco Bugis Junction and forced open the rear door of the restaurant at about 6am on 28 June. With a screwdriver, Ansar pried open the cash till only to find $2. He took the cash till and left the restaurant but he later dumped the till and used the money to take a bus back to Johor Bahru. According to The Straits Times, Ansar was working at Sakae Sushi as a cleaner from 2007 to 2009. He returned to Singapore on 26 June to look for a new job and to borrow money from a friend. Having found none, Ansar decided to steal from his ex-workplace. The father of two was caught at Woodlands Checkpoint when he returned to Singapore on 2 July. A second person known as Dila was found to be involved in the housebreaking, but the man could not be found. Despite stealing only $2, Ansar could have been jailed for up to 14 years.

A man who was charged for the murder of a woman in a flat in Taman Jurong has been further charged with 15 counts of theft. Lim Wee Thong, 46, used two ATM cards that belonged to 50-year-old Ms Loh Nyuk Moi to withdraw cash of $14,500 from her bank account a total of 15 times over a period of three days. Lim, who is a junior prison officer, is charged with Ms Loh's murder. He is suspected to have stabbed her in her vacant flat at Yung Ping Road. Her body was found lying in a pool of blood with four stab wounds. According to a witness, he had been seen holding hands with Ms Loh before the murder, and it is believed they were dating. According to court documents, he had killed her on 13 February at 10.27am and began making the first of his withdrawals at 5.11pm on the same day, heading to Taman Jurong Shopping Centre first to do so. Between 13 and 17 February, he continued on his thieving sprees using Ms Loh's ATM cards at various locations including Jurong West Ave 1, Block 502, Tampines CPF Building, Tampines St 21, Block 201B and a 7-11 outlet at Bedok Shopping Centre.
