  2. A retiree not only snatched a gold necklace off a woman, he was able to escape from two much younger pursuers. But police managed to trace him through his mobile phone which led to his arrest. On Monday, Woon Yin Meng, 78, was fined a total of $5,000 for theft and causing hurt to Madam Tang Sweet Kun, reports The Straits Times. A community court heard that Woon was living with his son in the Maysprings condominium in Bukit Panjang. On April 21 last year, while returning to the apartment at 8am, he noticed Madam Tang, 76, who was carrying bags of groceries and had a gold necklace around her neck. Woon followed her and at the void deck along Ganges Road, he grabbed her neck with his left hand and ripped off the necklace with the other hand. He also pushed her forward, causing her to fall to the floor and bruising her forehead. Two passers-by, aged 46 and 52 years old, cornered him but he threatened them with a kitchen knife and fled into the condominium. They gave chase but lost sight of him. Woon, however, dropped his mobile phone while getting away. Police used it to establish his identity and arrested him five hours later. He also dropped the necklace and it was never recovered. Its value could not be determined. Asking the court to impose a fine, defence counsel Sankar Saminathan said that Woon was a gambling addict and had committed the offences after his son refused to give him money. He had received counselling at the Institute of Mental Health and has stopped gambling, the lawyer added. In passing sentence, District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan said that he agreed with defence counsel that a jail term would not be appropriate and a high fine would suffice. The maximum penalty for theft is a three-year jail term and a $10,000 fine and for causing hurt is a two-year jail term and a $5,000 fine. The two charges for committing criminal intimidation by threatening the two bystanders with a knife were taken into consideration by the judge when passing sentence. 4. A 30-year-old man was sentenced to a year in jail on Monday for snatch theft, despite his attempt to evade arrest by hiding in an uncovered manhole that he had accidentally fallen into. Muhammad Ibrahim Abdul Kafoo, 30, had pleaded guilty to snatching the handbag of lawyer Lesley Fu in April outside Chijmes near City Hall. On April 29, he walked towards Ms Fu and ran off after grabbing her red handbag. She went after the thief with two police officers, but they lost sight of him near some road works being carried out near Saint Andrew's Cathedral. It turned out that the man had fallen through an uncovered manhole at the worksite, and decided it was a good place to lay low till his pursuers gave up. He stayed hidden for about 15 minutes, emerged completely soaked, and took a taxi back home. 7. This afternoon at the usual packed MBS carpark while searching for a lot i turn into a dead end, while i was about to reverse out. I was lucky that a family was walking over to their porche, so i inch forward 5 meters to wait for them to drive off. 10secs later a lady in a nissan sylphy drove up by my side wound down her window and tells me that she has been following the family to their lot. I replied her but my car was here. She seems pissed off but still with a smile gesturing the take it take it hand sign paused for 3 secs and she says "if it makes your day" then wound up her window reverse out and drove away. Well i did not reply her and wound up my window too. So i shall ask, did i snatch her lot as she reckon?

He was arrested after a member of the public provided valuable leads on his identity. 11. I know this have been posted many times, but i would just like to share a first hand encounter a few hrs back at 930pm in JB. Was with another friend in a shell petrol kiosk about 4km away from checkpoint, it was populated with Singapore cars as usual, brightly lit. So didnt think much about safety issue. I took my wallet out to take my credit card for pumping of petrol, this guy in shell uniform told me to take the card n put my wallet back into the car, which i did so. Thereafter he warned me that it is v dangerous n that i should lock my car, he even asked me to warn my friend to shut the boot cause it is not safe. I really thought he was being over worried, bt just as my friend close the boot n i was about to lock the car, i heard a shout from the other side of the car, the next thing i know was that my friend was on the ground, holding on to her bag with the man trying to snatch it away, n in a second he gave up n sped away with another man who was on a motorbike. *my friend said the man open the car door n took the bag, she snatch it away from him* before that i was thought, it would never happen to me.... but now.... it would happen to anyone.
