The new Mercedes-AMG GT: Driving performance for sports car enthusiasts
Deeq posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
The first Mercedes was a racing car and its most recent successor carries this heritage forward. With the new Mercedes-AMG GT, the Mercedes-AMG sports car brand is moving into a new sports car segment. The GT is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG. Its front mid-engine design with a rear transaxle and use of intelligent aluminium lightweight construction form the basis for a highly dynamic driving experience. Its newly developed AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine underscores the hallmark of AMG driving performance. The first sports car engine from AMG with internally mounted turbochargers ('hot inside V') and dry sump lubrication is configured in two output ratings: as a GT with 456 hp (340 kW) and as a GT S with 503 hp (375 kW). The new GT combines driving dynamics and first-class racetrack performance with superb everyday practicality and efficiency that sets new standards in the segment. It has everything you would expect from an authentic Mercedes-AMG sports car – from the characteristic styling, thoroughbred motorsport technology to the optimum weight distribution. The drive system tailored to consistently delivering driving dynamics perfectly complements this set-up. The centerpiece of the Mercedes-AMG GT is thethe new 4.0-liter V8 biturbo, which responds instantly with extreme power at low revs and delivers outstanding performance. Top figures such as 3.7 seconds from 0-60 mph (preliminary) and a top speed of 193 mph (310 km/h), combined with the outstanding driving dynamics will undoubtedly translate into extremely fast laps on the racetrack. At the same time, this two-seater is a comfortable and reliable companion for everyday motoring thanks to its practical decklid, easily accessible luggage compartment, and high level of comfort on long journeys. It also features an extensive list of Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive assistance systems which ensure the high level of safety expected from Mercedes-AMG. "With the new Mercedes-AMG GT, we are venturing out into a challenging sports car segment with its top-class competitive field. This is an incentive and motivation for us at the same time to prove to sports car enthusiasts around the world the kind of performance that AMG is capable of", says Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. "With the new GT we are positioning Mercedes-AMG even more aggressively than to date as a dynamic sports car brand", says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "With its technological substance, the Mercedes-AMG GT fulfils our high aspirations with regard to driving dynamics, agility and sportiness. The new GT is the second sports car developed fully independently by Mercedes-AMG. The car is manufactured according to the motto 'Handcrafted By Racers' – which perfectly encapsulates our heritage and our spirit." Powered by a 6.3-litre V8 engine, we know that the SLS AMG GT3 is one hot machine with over 580 ponies. For the festive season, the folks at AMG decide to turn the SLS AMG into a baking oven in a short video clip. In the lighthearted clip, the engineers told the driver that it is all about the temperature and repeatedly reminded him to keep the temperature at 180 degrees. The driver was informed to stay away from the curb, probably to avoid spillage of the cookies. The SLS AMG GT3 has been designed to comply with the GT3 specifications of the FIA and it

About a couple of years ago; Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, confirmed that Mercedes Benz will release an electric version of the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG. The all-electric supercar is said to be available by 2013. The car is said to make around close to 600bhp coupled with a lithium-ion battery pack. Fast forward to today, the above mentioned supercar is ready and now it is known as the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive. It is scheduled to go on sale by the middle of next year and it makes much more power than the earlier promised power figures. The SLS AMG Electric Drive makes an astonishing 740bhp and 999Nm of torque, powering all four wheels. This makes the car the most powerful electric car in the market and also in the AMG line-up. The company stated that the SLS AMG Electric Drive is capable of completing the century sprint in less than 3.9 seconds and will easily reach its top speed of 250km (electronically limited). To compare it with the normal petrol powered Mercedes Benz SLS AMG, the 580bhp SLS AMG completes the century sprint in 3.6 seconds (not much of a significant difference). This is possible due to it not being burdened by a heavy battery pack. The SLS AMG Electric Drive

Mercedes to participate in the Australian V8 Supercars Series
FaezClutchless posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
Some of us would have already read about Nissan's entry into the 2013 Australian V8 Supercars Championship. Previously, only Ford and Holden race their cars in the above mentioned racing competition. But now, things are going to be a little more exciting as another automaker is set to enter in the racing championship. Mercedes Benz has announced that they will participate in the 2013 Australian V8 Supercars Championship season. The German automaker will field three E63 sedans and Mercedes will be represented by a private team known as Erebus Motorsport. As mentioned above, Ford and Holden traditionally battle it out in the racing series, although other automakers have participated in its earlier days. Ever since the organisers came up with its Car of the Future regulations, more automakers find it easier to join the racing event. While engine and body styling are unique to each team, part of the regulation states that all cars participating will have to use a common "single control chassis". Ford and Holden will depend on their American V8 engines, Mercedes will be using a modified version of the V8 engine that is found in the SLS AMG. And the other new participant, Nissan, will use a modified V8 engine that is found in some of its Infiniti and Nissan models. The E63's stock engine is not allowed due to the rules stating that the engine has to be a naturally aspirated unit and not more than 5 litres in displacement. The engines must have an rpm limit of between 7,000 and 7,500 rpm, an engine output of around 650bhp and a torque curve that is balanced with its rivals. Erebus Motorsport will not be getting any factory support from Mercedes but AMG will sell much of its components to the team so that they can build their new race cars. Erebus Motorsport is owned by businesswoman and Mercedes fan, Betty Klimenko, and the company already has a pair of SLS AMG cars racing in the Aussie GT Championships. The three E63 AMG race cars are still going through some developments but they should be ready in time for the 2013 season in February. Although Mercedes Benz has no affiliation with the team, they have wished Erebus Motorsport well in its ventures. Photo credit: Net Car Show-

The latest Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is no doubt the spiritual successor to the original 300SL 'Gullwing' Coupe and Roadster. The styling of the current coupe is debatable though the gullwing doors are still cool and is a refreshing change to butterfly doors like on the McLaren or the trademark Lamborghini Scissor Doors. Yet one professional clay artist from France has used his free time to create his own vision of a modern-day 300 SL. Slimane Toubal, is no stranger to automobile design, having worked with several automakers like Audi, Honda and more recently, at PSA Peugeot-Citroen's China office. Toubal commented on his designs, "I expected the design study to replicate the original 300SL though it looks more SLS AMG based." He has designed both a coupe with the classic 'Gullwing' doors and a hardtop roadster. Design Credits: Slimane Toubal

Sometime this year, there were rumours that Mercedes-Benz was seriously considering a two-door performance model as a possible rival to Porsche's 911 and they might also revive the SLC model (codename R190) name and use it for this particular application. Now it seems that the automaker has been given the green light to produce it which is slated for production by 2015. Not many details were revealed about the new SLC except for its powertrain. Initially rumoured to use one of AMG tuned engines, the front-engined SLC will feature an all-new 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 engine instead. The new engine is part of Mercedes' future generation engines. These new engines will have a 500 cubic centimetres per cylinder displacement. This means that Mercedes-Benz could either use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, a 3.0-litre V6 or a 4.0-litre V8 engine in their future cars. Expected horsepower will be lower than the SLS AMG. Not known to us is what badge will the SLC use as nowadays Mercedes car labels have long lost the bearings of the actual capacity under the bonnet. (For example, the new E250 has a 1.8-litre engine) The new SLC will also be smaller in size compared to the SLS AMG. It will first be offered as a coupe and a roadster version will be offered if demands are high enough. The car will utilise Mercedes' current 7-speed dual clutch transmission and expect much light weight parts, such as aluminium, to be utilised interiorly. The original SLC life span didn't last long compared to other Mercedes Benz's models and a revival will increase the automaker's model line-up and place them in fierce contention with rival German manufacturers like Audi and BMW. As we all wait in anticipation as to what the SLS AMG Roadster will look like, Roger Federer has already seen more of it than any one else. He's been brought in as part of Mercedes' advertisement for the Roadster and Federer has been itching to take a photo of it (which is good news as its probably looks as stunning, or even more gorgeous than the coupe version) but isn't allowed to. Obviously. Federer was told that strictly no photos of the car were to be taken, and this is what he said on his Facebook page, "They won't let me take a picture but they are about to let me take it for a ride.......". And he does seem a little insistent on getting a photo of the car as he mentioned earlier, "Just started filming a Mercedes-Benz commercial...it's with the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster. Awesome machine! They won't let me take a picture with it as its not being publicly debuted until June. Security is tight. I might try later." Try he did but to no avail. I'm a huge fan of the SLS and seeing some of them on Singaporean roads roaring down the expressway, I just can't help but look in the rear view mirror... then on to the blind spot and away it goes hurtling past and disappearing from view in the front windscreen. And when 2012 comes, there will be a new SLS Roadster to look forward to. For now, I'll just be envious of Federer and wish that he'll be a bit more rebellious and take some shots! Come on Roger!

[extract] This is the Mansory Cormeum. It was originally the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG but in the hands of Kourosh Mansory, owner and head honcho of Mansory, the SLS AMG gets a new nose aside from a wide arch body kit. The Cormeum, named after an opera solo performance or aria, tries to fit the earlier Mercedes Benz SLR's nose into the SLS AMG together with the front headlights from a Ferrari 599. Looks like nothing is sacrilege these days

As gorgeous as it already is, the Mercedes SLS AMG is going to look even better with its convertible version. With the top down, the SLS looks even more appropriate as a bedroom wall pin-up or a high roller's car parked outside a casino in Monte Carlo. It tells the world that you don't really care whether you have gull-winged doors or not and that you probably look better than the car. And egoistical statement in other words. This version is for the man who treats this amazing work of engineering art as an accessory, it complements his looks and isn't afraid to flaunt it. Underneath, you get the same 6.2litre V8 with the twin clutch gear box, so you wouldn't have to worry about it being slow. The only worry will come if you're planning to thrash this round a track because it probably will be a little wobbly after taking the roof off. But then again, this car is equivalent to the poseur's expensive watch; fantastic, but just for show really.. Instead of the usual metal folding roofs that most convertibles have these days, Mercedes have decided to go with the soft top. This is mainly to keep its weight down. I actually prefer the look of the soft top, I think it adds a more classic feel to the car. Anyway, this version will probably only be out in 2012 but will be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show around mid-September in 2011. [photos courtesy of autoexpress]

BRABUS aero and performance options for the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG
Rigval posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
Brabus has launched their styling, handling as well as a slight performance upgrade for the gullwinged Mercedes Benz SLS AMG. Launched sometime last year, the SLS AMG is designed to be a modern 1950s 300SL Gullwing revival and basically replaced the flamboyant SLR McLaren. In standard Mercedes-AMG form, it already looks very impressive right up to the rear section where it does seem slightly plain looking. However, Brabus being a performance tuner, a very Mercedes specific tuner, means that have added some extra Oomph to the looks of the car in total. The aero package consists of a front lip spoiler that reduces lift on the front axle, air inlet surrounds on the front bumper, air outlet surrounds for the vents, a rear fixed edge of bootlid spoiler (which works with the active rear wing), a rear bumper/diffuser setup that fits a newly designed Brabus quad-tailpipe exhaust system that adds 10bhp to the 563bhp 6.3liter V8 engine. This exhaust system not only adds some power but also reduces weight as it only weighs 12kgs instead of the 20kg stock exhaust system. It also has a cabin operated pneumatic bypass valve so that the sound levels can be controlled by the driver. The handling package consists of a height adjustable suspension that allows the SLS AMG to be lowered by up to 40mm and also has driver controlled damper settings to adjust the ride of the car. Brabus has equipped the SLS AMG with 20-inch alloys in 275/30 ZR20 tires at the front and 22-inch rims with 295/25 ZR21 tires at the rear. Brabus has also customized the interior utilizing leather and alcantara with contrasting stitching, a restyled speedometer, Brabus- 4 comments

Yeap! 2009 has been dusted and we're in the presence of 2010, a year that holds much promise and continued success for some and for others, the continuing fight to stay in the black. And if you're wondering, LTA did release the sales figures of the various brands in Singapore last month. Besides the disheartening jump in the number of units from brands like Lamborghini, Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin and Bentley, the lesser Continental brands and the Koreans have also made good with the injection of all new products that boast not only good fittings but attractive and daring styling respectively. Audi, on the back of record sales last year spearheaded by it's R8 supercar will be introducing no less than five different models throughout this year, the MINI-challenging A1, A7, A8, Q5 Hybrid and the R8 Spyder. Probably the most anticipated of the lot by most of you guys, the R8 isn't on my list of the cars to watch in 2010. Why? The proportions on the car itself are questionable, the power delivery is sedate and diluted by various electronic equipment that keep you straight while driving and also helps you fall asleep at the wheel faster. Rather the A8 will be an interesting addition. Not only does it look almost the same as the last car from the side, the front and rear shots of the car don't seem too complimentary of the cars hefty size. The A1 is the other one. Poised to go head-on with MINI, I'm looking forward to seeing how it actually measures up to the MINI, primarily in the handling and the chassis section. Determined to have its turn in the spotlight, Volkswagen will be bringing in their Golf and Scirocco R cars, making its way into town within the first half and second half of the year respectively. The R32 which the Golf R replaces was a stonker of a car and the R is supposed to be much more fun at the wheel with less heft under the bonnet. With the Scirocco, VW's current line-up of 1.4 and 2.0 variants are wonderfully sprite engines but the suspension seems to have taken the hit of compromise, in an effort to not tear buyers between the Scirocco and the Golf models. Then the Korean camp is represented by Kia, introducing the Sorento after highly successful runs with the Forte and the Koup in the market last year. It's parent company Hyundai is also scheduled to release their all-new Sonata in March. Both cars are on my "to watch" list...they should do very well in this market. Next up the Opel Insignia. Not only does this baby look every bit as good as its press pictures suggest, but the two-litre turbocharged ecotec engine it's mated to will produce 220 bhp and 350 Nm of torque through a six-speeder to all four tyres! Not too shabby...another car that we'll see more of on our roads. Now that we're done with the everyday movers, let me get on with those of the supercar nature. Two highlights for me this year will be the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the three Reventon Roadsters. Both have reached legendary status's in the short time they've been revealed at the various motor shows and have become very sought after objects. The SLS AMG, despite not looking anything like the 300SL Gullwing it was meant to pay tribute to, looks nothing like the German company has made in recent times and with a 6.2-litre V8 under that long bonnet, is bound to take straight off into the hearts of the rich in Singapore.
