TAIPEI - A 33-year-old man was arrested in Taiwan on Monday (March 28) for allegedly chopping off the head of a four-year-old girl, reports said. The suspect, who reportedly has a history of mental illness, attacked the young girl at a Taipei suburb on Monday at about 11am, Focus Taiwan said. The attack happened right in front of her mother. Her grieving mother, Mrs Liu, told Apple Daily that she was about one metre away from her daughter, but could not stop the killer. The girl was going upslope on a strider bike when the suspect approached her from behind. She and her mother were on their way to a train station to meet her grandfather and her younger siblings. Thinking that the suspect was trying to help push her daughter up the slope, Mrs Liu did not attempt to stop him. Instead, he pulled out a chopper and brought it down on the little girl's neck, the newspaper said. When she realised what was happening, Mrs Liu tried to hold the killer back, but was not strong enough to stop him. Passers-by then helped to subdue the attacker, but by then, he had decapitated the victim. A blood-stained chopper was found near the crime scene, said Focus Taiwan. "I could not believe it. How can something so cruel happen?" the girl's grandmother sobbed as she told TVBS in Mandarin. The victim, nicknamed "Little Lightbulb", is the second of four children in her family. Her father works in the IT industry, and her mother is a housewife. She has a nine-year-old sister and a younger brother and sister who are two-year-old twins. A photo of the suspect, his face splattered with blood as he was brought in by the police, was published by Taiwanese media. The suspect, surnamed Wang, is said to be unemployed, and has a history of mental illness and drug offences. The case has shocked Taiwanese. In response, President Ma Ying-jeou said: "Today, I heard about the four-year-old girl's "Little Lightbulb's" misfortune. All of us feel shock and pain. The child is so adorable, and the killer so cruel; I have ordered a full investigation. Justice must be served." President-elect Tsai Ing-wen also issued a statement expressing her sorrow, and promising help to the family. The Government has a duty to strengthen public order, to prevent such crimes from happening again, she said. http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/knife-wielding-attacker-chops-off-head-of-4-year-old-girl-in-taipei

"Attention all passengers. Is there a pilot or anyone capable of flying a A320 in which we are in right now? Kindly step forward to be identified please. And concerning the ruckus you witnessed earlier, do not be alarmed as it is just one of our crew members having a rough day that's all. Thank you for your attention and please continue to enjoy the rest of the flight." Imagine hearing this especially if you are first time taking a plane... ...& that you are on board this JetBlue plane. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1191895/1/.html US pilot charged after mid-flight meltdown Posted: 29 March 2012 0524 LAS VEGAS, Nevada: A US pilot has been charged with interfering with a flight crew after a dramatic mid-flight breakdown in which he screamed about terrorists and 9/11, officials said on Wednesday. Clayton Osbon, 49, had to be restrained by a number of male passengers after Tuesday's incident, in which a JetBlue plane from New York to Las Vegas made an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas. "Several passengers assisted and brought Osbon down in the forward galley, where he continued to yell comments about Jesus, Sept. 11, Iraq, Iran and terrorists," said an affidavit giving a blow-by-blow account of the flight. The first officer then "declared an emergency and diverted the aircraft to Amarillo, landing with passengers still restraining Osbon," said the document cited by US Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Sarah R. Saldana. Footage filmed with cell phone cameras and broadcast on US television showed chaos at the front of the plane, as male passengers scrambled to help restrain the pilot, who could be heard shouting hysterically. Between four and six passengers had to sit on him for up to 20 minutes as the plane, which was three and a half hours into its flight, made an emergency landing, witnesses said. According to the affidavit, the pilot, who had shown no previous sign of mental problems, had arrived late for the flight, and began behaving erratically soon after the plane took off from New York's Kennedy airport. "As the plane was leaving JFK and climbing in altitude in its scheduled five-hour flight, Osbon said something to the first officer (FO) about being evaluated by someone, but the FO did not know what he meant. "Osbon then talked about his church and the need to 'focus' and asked the FO to take the controls and work the radios. Osbon began talking about religion, but, according to the FO, his statements were not coherent." The first officer became particularly concerned when Osbon said "things just don't matter," and "yelled over the radio to air traffic control and instructed them to be quiet," according to the affidavit. Osbon then "turned off the radios in the aircraft, dimmed his monitors and sternly admonished the FO for trying to talk on the radio. "When Osbon said 'We need to take a leap of faith,' the FO stated that he became very worried. Osbon told the FO that 'We're not going to Vegas,' and began giving what the FO described as a sermon." The first officer then suggested they invite an off-duty JetBlue captain who was on board into the cockpit, at which point the captain abruptly left to go to the forward lavatory. When Osbon came out of the lavatory, he began talking to flight attendants, mentioning "150 souls on board." "Osbon walked to the rear of the aircraft but along the way stopped and asked a male passenger if he had a problem. Osbon then sprinted back to the forward galley and tried to enter his code to re-enter the cockpit," it said. At that point, the first officer used the public address system to issue an order to restrain Osbon. In response, a number of passengers - many of whom were well-built men heading to a security industry convention in Las Vegas - piled onto the captain, and sat on him for the rest of the flight. Once on the tarmac, TV footage showed the pilot being taken off the plane on a stretcher in Amarillo, where passengers spent several hours before continuing their interrupted flight to the desert gambling city. JetBlue's chief executive Dave Barger paid tribute to the quick-thinking first officer, as well as the passengers who helped pin the captain down. "That was a tough situation at altitude. The customers, the crew, just did a great job," he told NBC television's "Today Show" programme. "That was a true team effort at 35,000 feet (10,000 kilometres) yesterday." "I've known the captain personally for a long period of time. There's been no indication of this at all in the past," Barger said. - AFP/de

Siao! This is what the article is suggesting! I want my greens! http://publichouse.sg/categories/topstory/...parents-had-won? What would S'pore be like if our grandparents had won? Written by Andrew Loh Cemeteries now occupy less than 0.95% of land - do our grandchildren really need this? "Do you want me to look after our dead grandparents or do you want me to look after your grandchildren?" asked then-Cabinet Minister Lim Kim San in the 1960s, and Minister of State Tan Chuan-Jin in 2012. What would Singapore be like if our grandparents had won? For one, we wouldn't have the clear, grassy slopes of Fort Canning Park for WOMAD and Ballet Under the Stars. No, in its place, we'd have a messy Fort Canning Cemetery crowded with 19th-century graves of governors, administrators, sailors, traders, teachers, many young women and children - some even buried two to a grave. Instead of Bishan housing estate, home to 91,298 people at last count, the Cantonese Kwong Wai Siew Association might still have their Peck San Theng (Jade Hill Pavilion) built in 1870 - the largest cemetery in Singapore, with 75,234 graves eventually exhumed. Likewise parts of Tiong Bahru, Henderson, Redhill, Serangoon, Jalan Bukit Merah would still have cemeteries where public housing now stands. A Jewish cemetery dating from 1838 or 1841 would stand in place of Orchard MRT station, its small plot housing 160 graves. And instead of the shops at Velocity, Novena Square, Phoenix Park, we might see Jewish tombs designed by the famous Italian sculptor Cavalieri Rodolfo Nolli in the Thomson Road Jewish Cemetery, in use from 1904 onwards. Instead of KK Women's and Children's Hospital, on the land between Bukit Timah, Kampong Java, Halifax and Hooper Road, we'd have a flood-prone Bukit Timah Cemetery packed with Catholic and Protestant graves from 1865. Neither would we have Ngee Ann City, Mandarin Hotel, Cathay Cineleisure and Wisma Atria. Instead, in the heart of Orchard Road would sit a 28-hectare burial ground Tai Shan Ting, managed by the Teochew Ngee Ann Kongsi. And of course, we wouldn't have those clear, flat fields along Upper Serangoon Road, a space now emptying itself out in preparation for new condominiums and residential towns. In its place, we might still have the 10.5-hectare early 20th-century Bidadari Cemetary, with its delicate marble sculptures and tombstones etched with different languages in the Christian, Muslim and Hindu sections. One might conclude that the 1960s generation did the right thing. They were self-sacrificial enough (or, were forced) to forgo their ancestors' graves so that their grandchildren could have the space for housing, shopping, infrastructure, all these modern amenities we now enjoy. Especially for those of us living and working in Orchard, Novena, Tiong Bahru, Henderson, Redhill, Serangoon, Jalan Bukit Merah, this giving up of graveyard space for modern development seems good and necessary. Burial grounds now occupy less than 0.95% of Singapore's land area But the fact is, back in 1967, burial grounds only made up 1.1% (619 hectares) of land area on Singapore Island, and by 1982, after the clearing of Bukit Timah Cemetery, Peck San Theng (Bishan) etc, it was down to 534 hectares (approx 0.95% of Singapore's land area). Furthermore, this 0.95% figure doesn't even include the Thomson Road Jewish Cemetery (cleared by 1985), 10.5 hectare Bidadari Cemetery (cleared by 2006), and 7-hectare Kwong Hou Sua in Woodlands (cleared by 2009). Is it really necessary to wipe clean these remaining precious spaces that take up less than 0.95% of Singapore's land area? And if Singapore desperately needs more land, why aren't we first using the land area currently occupied by Orchid Country Club, Raffles Country Club, Singapore Island Country Club, Warren Golf & Country Club, and the golf and country clubs in Changi, Jurong, Keppel, Marina Bay, Kranji, Selatar Base, Sembawang, Tanah Merah? Perhaps in the past, it was deemed necessary for our grandparents to relinquish their burial grounds for public housing and the development of the shopping belt in Orchard and Novena. But how much is enough, and what is the optimum point between preserving tangible heritage and history, and allowing the land to be taken over by even more modern amenities, condominiums and wider roads? This concerns all of us and future generations, and we need proper, genuine discussion before bulldozers irreversibly destroy these old spaces. Minister of State Tan Chuan-Jin's argument hinges on Mr Lim Kim San's question, but asking Singaporeans to choose between our dead grandparents and our grandchildren is a severe misrepresentation of the issue. I strongly suspect our grandchildren will not live in misery for want of that extra 0.95% of land. In fact, I hope our grandchildren will be more creative in their urban design, with efficient use of land and infrastructure, without resorting to the destruction of the few cemeteries left. And if current public sentiment is anything to judge the future by, I suspect our grandchildren will enjoy walking in a protected, conserved Bukit Brown, seeing and touching history in tangible forms, and will one day ask, what would Singapore be like if our grandparents had won? That is, if we don't win today. By Lisa Li Lisa Li is a member of SOS Bukit Brown. The Community of Bukit Brown calls for a moratorium on all plans for Bukit Brown, until there is clarity over long-term plans for the area and discussions over alternatives have been exhausted. STOMPer DoubleTroubles was concerned to see this man endangering his life by climbing out the window to sweep the parapet outside his flat, which was located on the 10th storey of an HDB block. Said the STOMPer: "I hope this man will realise one day that sweeping the parapet is dangerous. "The thought of him climbing in and out of the window, stepping onto the plastic chair, is worrying. "What if the plactic chair gives way one day? Please don't do it again if you read this." Funny thing is he even put an altar outside

http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_276532.html THIS car is one of the eight vehicles damaged by a man who hurled bricks and wooden planks at vehicles parked at an open-air carpark in Jurong East Street 13 on Monday morning. The windscreens and side windows of the cars were either smashed or cracked. Some of the cars' side mirrors were also left dangling from their hinges. The morning blitz near Block 112 was apparently committed by a man in his 40s who lived in the neighbourhood. He was later arrested by the police, who arrived at the scene after receiving calls from residents. -----

http://uk.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis...SIN875620080620 Gurkhas hurt in Singapore scuffle Fri Jun 20, 2008 1:44pm BST SINGAPORE, June 20 (Reuters) - A group of Nepalese Gurkhas in a contingent attached to Singapore's police "scuffled" last week in a dispute over wages, a rare display of indiscipline in a force renowned for its bravery and devotion to duty. Singapore police said in a statement that the group, off-duty at the time, were involved "in an incident of disorderly and boisterous behaviour" at their special compound on June 13. The incident followed a discussion by a larger number of officers on the issue of their salary scale, the statement said. Eight people were injured and had to be treated, but no one was seriously hurt, the police said. No further details were given. A contingent of Gurkhas, known for their bravery and discipline, serves in Singapore to guard some of its most sensitive facilities such as the airport and embassies. "Apart from the group which misconducted themselves, the rest were not involved in any acts of indiscipline," the police said. Many young Nepalese men aspire to become Gurkhas because they view it as a way out of poverty. The online encyclopedia Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurkha_Contingent) says around 370 are selected annually from 20,000 applicants, with 140 chosen for the Singapore police force and the rest for the British Army. It says around 2,000 currently serve in Singapore, many accompanied by their families. The police said they are investigating the matter as an internal one. I just finished some stuff at Church office which was facing Hougang Ave 3, As we all know, that long stretch during Peak Hours is mad... and some cars try to use the Bus Lane to overtake and stuff... Was just minding my P's and Q's and suddenly heard a loud screech of tyres and BANG! Woah i turned ard, hoping to see DK in his badly crumpled A168 ... But no I saw , in that split second, a white Toyota Hiace van, carrying SCHOOL CHILDREN mind you, scrape against this cyclist. I just stood there, rooted and not knowing what to do.. I was brought back to earth when my friend said, aiyah nothing lah.... tHEN i realised what happened. The cyclist picked himself and his bengkok bike and dragged it to the side of the road. I felt weird. Why was the Hiace on Bus Lane... Suddenly , buses came. But they still were there. From afar, i was like... i saw them talking.. So i walked away Then the van driver, came to me from behind and asked if i could speak english, so i offered my help to negotiate things btw them Apparently, that cyclist ( As he claimed), came from China just 3 days ago and doesn't know the road conditions well... Thus he RODE HIS BIKE RIGHT ACROSS THE 3 LANES. Omg, i wanted to slap his face for being so dangerous. Heng that Busdriver ( Indian), stopped and jammed brakes in time, and only causing the chinaguy to have a slight gash on his hand from the fall... What if the bus didn't stop? and just banged head on? No thanks latioboy, i don't want a nightmare to see gruesome body parts... So the bus driver told me that it was NO fault of his. THe cyclist rode ACROSS all 3 lanes and wanted to come to the side of the road. I was shocked.. But the cyclist looked damn stunned. So the busdriver told me to tell him in chinese, that he is NEVER going to accept responsibility... So i told that guy, and he said he will call his boss to come down to negotiate... With my father waiting the other side at a carpark, i then left the 2 of them.. But what i have learnt is... It's damn dangerous. Yes if what that china guy said was true, yeah, he is wrong, but cant blame him cause he dunno out traffic. But if he was lying, it was obviously the cyclists fault.. Phew... Scary... That scary BANG sound still resounds in my head.. Off to dinner now.

Carmaker admits that it failed to act on defects for up to 3 years TOKYO Mitsubishi Motors, responsible for one of the global auto industry's largest product recalls, has said it will take back 274,635 cars in Japan to fix defects that it failed to act on for up to three years. Mitsubishi Motors will recall its Colt compact cars and the Galant, Aspire and Legnum sedans to repair defective ignition systems and air conditioner fans, according to the Tokyo-based carmaker's applications filed Tuesday to the Transport Ministry. The recall is the latest hurdle for Mitsubishi Motors, which is seeking to restore its brand image after it admitted to having hidden defects twice in five years. Sales by Mitsubishi Motors, Japan's fifth-largest carmaker, fell 32 percent in March and have slumped for 15 months. "An incident like this would give a bad impression" to investors, said Shigeo Kikuchi, a Takagi Securities equity manager in Tokyo. "Mitsubishi Motors hasn't been able to change its corporate culture and has a long way to go to revive itself." The company, Japan's sole unprofitable carmaker, has been surviving on funds injected by shareholders, receiving almost
