Salute these men for going out of the way to help a neighbour. defo can sleep well at night if i know i have such helpful guys living nearby. https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapore-seen/heroic-residents-suffer-scratches-after-saving-cats-from-yishun-hdb-unit-on-fire?fbclid=IwAR0TE6r2u76uIy4CECtqn5CzuRcDcSjopwhM4M1atl73iPG_tWYq4ZRAdz8 Watch the video on Stomp. and lastly five cats in hdb. as we all know cats are nt allowed in hdb flats but the unspoken rule is tat if nobody complain then you can keep ur cats. for such a case highlighted in public, wat will happen to the cats? will hdb do anything? Two brave men stepped forward to save five cats after a fire broke out in a unit at Block 257 Yishun Ring Road on Sunday morning (July 14). Stomper Francis, Kohji and Wati alerted Stomp to the incident and shared photos and videos taken at the scene. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told Stomp that they responded to the fire at about 10.10am. The fire involved the contents of a bedroom in a unit on the third floor and was extinguished by the SCDF using two compressed-air foam (CAF) backpacks. Two people were taken to hospital due to suspected smoke inhalation, a spokesman said. Preliminary investigations indicate a personal mobility device (PMD) was being charged when the fire occurred. "Two selfless heroes managed to rescue the cats before the SCDF arrived, getting injured in the process," said Francis, who lives a few blocks away from the affected block. "Five cats were rescued and one of them was, unfortunately, slightly burnt." His photos showed long scratches on one of the men's arms. He also shared a video of the men who were joined by other Yishun residents as they tried to put out the fire with water-filled buckets and a hose.

Seriously?! Where are we, or rather, Singapore heading to now? The problem exist because of poor planning (it may even be a cost saving effort by HDB when they are developing the estate), and now resident have to come up with their own money to overcome the issue they faced daily? What is next? Resident to build their own community / recreational center, install additional lifts, street lights, bus stops? Where is the $$$ with our MND / HDB / TCs??? Are the residents required to folk out additional money to have the bridge maintain periodically too? And if there are any legal issues with the bridge (say structural issue, someone claiming damage for the use of link bridge, etc.), shall the residents be made liable for it, since MND, HDB and AMKTC can wash their hands off as the bridge was not built by them? PM Lee opens new linkway at Sengkang tree-planting event PM Lee opened a new sheltered linkway that will allow residents of the Fern Spring and Fern View estates bounded by Fernvale Lane and Fernvale Road to access the nearby bus stop along Yio Chu Kang Road. It links the third storey of the multi-storey carpark at Block 404 Fernvale Lane to the bus stop. Mr Gan, who oversees the Sengkang South division, said the linkway project was a community initiative mooted last year by grassroots leaders, who raised about $388,000 to build it. The linkway was completed just last week. As most of the housing blocks are built on a slope, residents in the past would have to walk up a 40-step staircase from the ground floor of the carpark to reach the top of the slope, where the bus stop is located . With the linkway, they can just take the lift to the third storey of the adjacent carpark and get to the bus stop without climbing the stairs. "This is part of plans to make the neighbourhood more accessible for elderly residents and families with young children in prams," said Mr Gan. There are about 1,600 households in the Fern Spring and Fern View estates. Former garment factory worker Teng Mei Foong, 65, is glad to see the new linkway. "Walking up the stairs is very tiring for older people like us and residents have been complaining about this for the past four years or so. Now it'll be easier to get to the bus stop when I go to Chinatown to do some errands, or when I visit my relatives," she said. Translate (the portion highlighted in RED) for non-Chinese reader: The total fee for constructing the link bridge, valued at $388K, was fully funded by grassroot members, residents and other form of donations. Under normal circumstances, town council can apply to MND (CIPC) for such project to be funded. But when grassroot review the meaningfulness of the link bridge, they felt that the project can strengthen the cohesiveness of the community. "Building the bridge is a kind act to the community... As such, when we started the project, we have decided NOT to apply for funding from CIPC, so that residents can contribute to it voluntary. This is a meaningful project, it allows all to have a sense of participation and belonging." For those who did not know who is Gan Thiam Poh...

The scene of an accident on Monday involving a tipper truck and a car at the junction of Tampines Street 45 and Tampines Avenue 9. The tipper truck involved in a recent accident at the Tampines junction where two young brothers died a year earlier came from the same construction site as the cement-mixer truck that killed the boys. With new projects lined up at the site near Tampines Street 45, residents fear this means more heavy vehicles plying the roads in the area and greater danger for children especially. "Having many heavy vehicles ferrying construction material in and out all day long right smack in a school zone is very dangerous," said housewife Christina Tan, 48, who lives on Tampines Street 45. "These heavy vehicles shouldn't be so near such a populated road where lots of people walk to and from school." Accidents involving heavy vehicles have come under the spotlight after Nigel Yap, 13, and his brother Donavan, seven, were fatally hit by a cement-mixer truck in January last year at the junction of Tampines Street 45 and Tampines Avenue 9. The driver responsible, Munir Mohd Naim, was jailed for two weeks on Monday for negligence. As reported on Asiaone forum. http://forums.asiaone.com/showthread.php?t=65092 Apparently, there now exists a Filipino sub-committee inside a Residents’ Committee (RC), presumably to look after the interests of Filipino residents. One wonders if there exists other sub-committees also like Myanmar sub-committee, PRC sub-committee, India sub-committee etc, to look after the interests of the other nationals living in the estate. Indeed, a scan through the various forums showed that Singaporean netizens are questioning such a move. Many are asking how RCs are going to help integrate residents when they have their separate nationality-based sub-committees: Quote: Compassvale Villa RC is only 1 of the 9 RCs in the Punggol Central Constituency, which itself is part of the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. and some said in MCF before that live in private property is v safe and no such problems For more than a year, residents at The Centris condominium in Jurong West thought that the screws they found stuck in their tyres had come from driving on roads. That is, until they found out that some of their neighbours had suffered the same fate, and realised it had been done deliberately. At least 40 residents have had their cars vandalised in the condo's private carpark, mostly involving screws being driven into the tyres of their vehicles. Despite more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras being installed about two weeks ago, the incidents - which include cases of smashed headlights, scratched cars and glue on car bonnets - have not stopped.

The good doctor has got some vaild points on town councils (TC) here Have my fair share of [shakehead] experiences with mine and frankly I am not very impressed. Not sure if the TC estate officers conduct rounds during their daily work but the maintenance was rather sloppy or not at all. Constantly giving feedback on defects, some of which are valid concerns, and many times I have to copy my e-mail to the MP before they take notice. Following-up on my feedbacks is another matter altogether [:|] From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/premium/forum-...idents-20130221 Town councils need to be more accountable to residents Published on Feb 21, 2013 RECENTLY, the Sembawang Town Council settled a lawsuit brought by a man who became paralysed after falling along a walkway ("Walkway suit 'resolved'"; Feb 1). The town council will also be fined by the National Environment Agency for having mosquito larvae in several water tanks in two Woodlands blocks ("Mosquitoes breeding in water tanks of 2 Woodlands blocks"; Feb 9). Who pays for the settlement and the fine? If they are paid from town council funds, which come mainly from service and conservancy charges, does this mean the residents have to pay the penalty for the town council's lapses? The current system is clearly not effective in keeping town councils accountable to residents. I have given feedback to the West Coast Town Council on pest-infested flower beds, smelly bin chutes, unswept walkways and the dumping of commercial trash in common areas, but have seen few results. There is no sign of a systemic resolution of the issues I raised. How can residents be assured that town councils are doing their job, especially in areas we cannot see, such as the washing of water tanks? There are few customer satisfaction surveys carried out to rate the performance of town councils. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's call to review town council governance is timely. Hopefully it will empower residents and make town councils more accountable. Seto Hann Hoi (Dr)

Really? please share what is your TOP concern.. --- Education is residents' top concern Bukit Panjang residents say Singapore should not be a country of tuition teachers, in dialogue with Balakrishnan by Tan Weizhen 04:45 AM Nov 19, 2012 SINGAPORE - More education options for slow learners or needy students, relook some schools' system of assigning the best teachers to the best classes, review teachers' workload. These were just a few of the myriad of suggestions 108 residents raised at a National Conversation dialogue held at Bukit Panjang yesterday. The residents had responded to an invitation by their Member of Parliament, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, and it was evident education was among the issues that most concerned them. They also discussed issues on housing, transport and declining birth rates. Most residents wanted many parts of the education system to be overhauled, from a nationalisation of pre-school education to a renewed focus on cultivating the love of learning in children. One group of residents did not want Singapore to be "a country of tuition teachers", and felt there were too many remedial or supplementary classes when it should be more targeted. Another group "pitied" teachers and said parents need to be educated against the pitfalls of placing too much emphasis on examinations. does this mean the definition of meritocracy need to be adjusted? Dr Balakrishnan, who is Minister for Environment and Water Resources, agreed with the residents, saying that developing values and education are areas to think about, as children are being prepared to meet future challenges. He said: "(The) PSLE is important

...to hang flag With National Day looming ahead, PAP grassroots leaders have been going from door to door persuading and sometimes even begging residents to hang the Singapore flag. Block 340 at Choa Chu Kang Loop facing Lot 1 has Singapore flags hung along the common corridors at every level while few flags were hung in the surrounding flats. According to a resident Bernard Tan, the PAP grassroots organizations have employed Bangladeshi workers to hang the flags along the corridors while grassroots leaders 'harassed' the residents by imploring them to hang the flags. "The PAP lapdogs came to my house and offered to hang the flag for us. My dad ask them to F**K off," he wrote. The Temasek Review Emeritus (TRE) has earlier received a tip-off from a reader staying in Hougang Street 91 that he spotted a Bangladeshi worker hanging the Singapore flags along the common corridors late into the night. Netizens have also observed that the National Day banners and billboards this year contain unfamiliar faces in addition to the 4 major races in Singapore to include the newcomers from India, China, Philipines and elsewhere. Due to the PAP's ultra-liberal and pro-foreigner policies, foreigners now make up 43 percent of Singapore's population. Of the remaining 57 percent who are supposedly citizens, an increasing number are born overseas like PAP MP from Malaysia Dr Janil Puthucheary. Other new citizen PAP MPs include Foo Mee Har, Inderjit Singh, Irene Ng, Khaw Boon Wan and Dr Lily Neo. When asked how he is going to celebrate National Day, Mr Tan retorted: "I am going to bring my entire family to JB. What's there to celebrate? This country has gone to the DOGS. Let the PAP cronies and the foreigners have a mass orgy together!" Have you hung the Singapore flag yet? How are you going to celebrate National Day? Join our Facebook page here.

Aljunied residents spent $1000 to celebrate LTK's symbolic new birthday. Celebrations included Lion dance, 5 kg B-day cake, buffet for 80 pax and singing of birthday song. Upon arrival, LTK was mobbed by 300+ supporters. While I support WP, I hope this hero worship don't get out of hand. Meanwhile Ms Irene of Tampines must be green and sour all over.

For those qualified to vote in Aljunied GRC, will you be supporting WP in this coming election? For accuracy sake, please DO NOT VOTE if you are not qualified to vote in this GRC.

Well, that seems to be the latest definition. Even the reporter also think so apparently. You can watch the video and verify from the speech by the PM from 02:255 to 02:59: http://www.straitstimes.com/GeneralElectio...ory_659474.html Go to the Razor video and take note that at 02:55, he mentioned that 2/3 of the managerial & professional positions goes to SINGAPOREANS. Unless the word SINGAPOREAN nowadays in the RP context includes both citizens & SIngapore residents, I have nothing to say. Then again see how his speech on this is mentioned in the same web page(highlighted in blue with sized 7 font for 02:55 portion) : Foreign workers help create good jobs for S'poreans: PM By Cassandra Chew and Chua Hian Hou In his speech, Mr Lee noted that six in 10 of the employees are 'Singaporeans and permanent residents'. Singapore residents also take up two-thirds of the managerial and professional positions, he added. -- ST PHOTO: CHEW SENG KIM FAR FROM being disadvantaged, Singaporeans have benefitted from good jobs created by the Government's policy of allowing in a 'controlled' number of foreign workers, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Thursday. The policy has also attracted foreign investments to Singapore, said Mr Lee, speaking at the official opening of IMFlash's US$3 billion high tech electronics plant, one of the biggest electronics investments here. The Woodlands plant, a joint-venture between technology giants Intel and Micron, currently employs 1,200 staff. IMFlash's managing director Chen Kok Sing said the plant, the only wafer fab in Singapore to produce the memory chips used in many popular electronic items like smartphones and tablet computers, will have 1,500 staff by next year. In his speech, Mr Lee noted that six in 10 of the employees are 'Singaporeans and permanent residents'. Singapore residents also take up two-thirds of the managerial and professional positions, he added. For every one foreign worker, we have created 1.5 local jobs in this project,' he said. 'Without the foreign workers, we would not have attracted this US$3 billion investment, and Intel and Micron would have built its wafer fab elsewhere. But by allowing in a controlled number of foreign workers, far from disadvantaging Singaporean workers, we have created more good jobs for Singaporeans,' said Mr Lee. The Government's foreign worker policy could emerge as a hot-button issue this election as some believe that it has hurt residents' job prospects and depressed wages.
