The school bus driver thought the 11-year-old boy had fallen asleep in his seat. But when he tried to wake the boy upon reaching Maris Stella Primary School yesterday morning, the Primary 5 pupil did not respond. He was later pronounced dead at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH). The New Paper understands the boy was on his way to school when he became unresponsive. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received a call at about 6.55am yesterday and sent an ambulance to the school. Police received a call around the same time yesterday asking for help "at 80, Bartley Road". UNCONSCIOUS They found an 11-year-old boy unconscious when they arrived and he was taken to KKH, "where he was subsequently pronounced dead at about 8.46am," their spokesman said. TNP understands that the boy was living with his grandparents and a maid here and that his parents were overseas when he died. An SMS that was circulated around Maris Stella Primary yesterday informed all of the incident and asked them to pray for the boy and his family. One parent, who declined to be named, said the boy had a fever on Mondayand was sent home early. He said: "The school principal spoke to his class and told them about the news. We heard he was an only child and his parents are currently out of the country." Mrs Woo Soo Min, principal of Maris Stella Primary, said in an e-mail to TNP that the school was "saddened by the passing of one of our students". "We are in touch with the family and are providing assistance and support to them during this difficult time. We are also providing emotional support to affected staff and students. As the police is investigating this case, we are unable to comment further," she said. Police are investigating the unnatural death. Correction note: An earlier version of this story said TNP understood that the boy's parents were overseas at the time of the incident. Family members have told media that the parents were in Singapore. The story has been corrected. - See more at: http://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore-news/maris-stella-pupil-11-dies-school-bus?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook#link_time=1472604456 Really sad.

...is an ah tiong... I feel they come from a long way and they are more motivated to do better THIS year's top student in the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) could barely speak any English when she moved here from China in 2006 with her family. Qiu Biqing, 13, from Qifa Primary School, achieved an aggregate score of 290, with four A*s and a Distinction in Higher Chinese. Her father, Mr Qiu Guo Hua, 45, is a research fellow at the National University of Singapore, and her mother, Madam Xie Xiaojin, 42, is a research assistant there. They both work in a physiology lab. The top Indian pupil this year is Muhammad Saad Siddiqui from Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), and the top Malay pupil is Syafiqah Nabilah Bte Shamshera from Raffles Girls' Primary School. Biqing said that she improved her English by reading a lot, and not being afraid to speak aloud even if she made mistakes. She has a place in Raffles Girls' School through the Direct Schools Admission process and hopes to become a lawyer or a novelist.

Very sad , (my son is a P3 student in PPS) my deepest condolences to the Neo family http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_430456.html ________________________________________________________________________ NINE-YEAR-OLD Mindy Neo was so excited about returning to school after the one-week break that she slept early just so she could wake up feeling fresh the next morning. But the girl, who would have been 10 next month, never made it to class on Monday after an accident involving a van while she was crossing Buangkok Drive at about 6.45am. The Primary 4 prefect at Punggol Primary School was flung about 20m on impact and died in hospital two hours later. The 24-year-old Indonesian maid who was with Mindy at the time was injured and is now warded in Changi Hospital with head and back injuries. The accident is believed to have occurred when the red van turned right from from Punggol Road into Buangkok Drive. Mindy and her maid were using the pedestrian crossing at the time, although it is not clear if the traffic lights were in their favour at the time. Mindy's parents were distraught yesterday and her father, Mr Neo Hwee Choon, 43, was in tears when he spoke to reporters before her wake yesterday morning. Just last month, father and daughter composed a song - 'Teachers' Day Love Song' - on a piano he bought her recently. Mindy went on to record the tune onto CDs and presented them to her teachers on Teachers' Day. Mindy's death was also a blow to her principal, teachers and classmates, who described her as 'creative, intelligent and humble'. Police have arrested the 63-year-old van driver on suspicion of causing death through a rash or negligent act, offences which could see him jailed for a maximum sentence of five years and fined. The police are appealing for eyewitnesses and anyone with information should call the Traffic Police on 1800-547-1818. Read the full story in Wednesday's edition of The Straits Times.
