Massacre on Singapore’s Prison Island: A Prison-Without-Bars Experiment Gone Wrong Superintendent Daniel Stanley Dutton was cornered into his office after getting attacked by three prisoners. He could hear the commotion outside, and the four walls suddenly felt like they were closing in on him. A rhythmic, grating sound came from above his head. Two men had climbed to the roof and had hacked a hole in it with a small axe. Petrol spewed from the hole, soaking Dutton to his boots. The men tossed in fire, and the fire devoured Dutton. With his clothing ablaze, Dutton rushed outside. Four others, all armed with axes and cangkuls, were waiting for him. They attacked him in an almost barbaric fugue, and when they were done, they burned his body. A good read about Singapore's prison without bars. I never know about this before. https://thekopi.co/2021/09/23/pulau-senang-riot-massacre-prison/?fbclid=IwAR1VwD8I9Ci3-9I6oFaozJcxy84CY3ZOyReRfKdlkzhsmRpteRnGM3xRVr4

http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/fire-at-shells-manufacturing-site-on-pulau-bukom-injures-six Pulau Bukom always a source of concern. 3 in critical condition after Pulau Bukom fire POSTED: 21 Aug 2015 22:32 SINGAPORE: Three people are in critical condition after a fire broke out at Shell's Pulau Bukom Manufacturing Site on Friday (Aug 21). The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire at 6.15pm on Friday evening. The blaze was extinguished by the Company Emergency Response Team before SCDF arrived on the scene. Six contractor workers suffered burn injuries and were sent to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). "Contrary to speculation, there is no SCDF personnel among the casualties," the civil defence force said on Facebook. Of the six workers injured, three have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, SGH confirmed. One is in stable condition, while the two have been discharged after receiving outpatient treatment. "We are following the progress and treatment of the other workers closely and are working with our contractors to ensure all possible support and assistance are rendered to the injured workers and their families. All other personnel are accounted for at the site," a Shell spokesperson said. Shell added that the fire was put out by the sites first emergency responders within an hour and said there is no other impact on the sites operations. The firm added that it is working with the Singapore Civil Defence Force to investigate the incident.

Am thinking of bringing my 3yr old there to stay overnight for a fresh experience, but don't intend to pitch tent as my poor back doesn't allow me to sleep on cold hard uneven floor nowadays. There used to be a Celestial resort but they seemed to have ceased operations on those chalets again. Does anyone know who has taken over those chalets from them or they are just not operating anymore?

Mail sent to Pulau Ubin by drone in world-first SingPost trial The 2-kilometer test flight from Lorong Halus to the island off Singapore's north-eastern coast took 5 minutes, and carried a payload of a letter as well as T-shirt in a packet, SingPost said. POSTED: 08 Oct 2015 08:49 PHOTOS A SingPost drone successfully makes a 2km mail run from the mainland to Pulau Ubin. (Photo: SingPost) Enlarge Caption 50 4 14 Email More A A SINGAPORE: Mail delivered in flight, with not a postman in sight? The first step toward making this a daily reality was taken after Singapore Post successfully trialled a mail run from mainland Singapore to Pulau Ubin - the first time in the world a postal service has successfully used an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for point-to-point recipient-authenticated mail delivery. The last-mile mail and packet drone delivery from Lorong Halus to Pulau Ubin trial was successfully completed as part of a joint development between SingPost and the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the postal service provider announced on Oct 8 (Thursday). The 2-kilometer test flight took 5 minutes, and carried a payload of a letter as well as T-shirt in a packet, SingPost said. The drone was built upon the Pixhawk Steadidrone platform by IDA Labs, and is tailored for use in a challenging environment like Singapore, SingPost said in a press release. The drone is equipped with enhanced safety features, and comes with a prototype app designed with security and verification features to ensure mail reaches its intended recipient. It has the capacity to carry a payload of up to half a kilogramme, fly at a height of up to 45 metres and travel for 2.3km. The focus of the flight was to test the drone technology and safety boundaries. "SingPost’s exploration of the drone technology is a move to provide enhanced end-to-end solutions to facilitate urban logistics as well as tap on the burgeoning eCommerce growth in Asia Pacific," the postal operator added. "LITERALLY AIMING FOR THE SKY" Added IDA Managing Director Jacqueline Poh: “The successful conclusion of this trial shows how SingPost is thinking out of the box and its willingness to expand its traditional mail delivery model in innovative ways. "Although it will be a while before it is viable for drone mail delivery to take off in Singapore, taking into consideration commercial and safety factors; this first step by SingPost and IDA demonstrates what Singapore is trying out with our Smart Nation vision – to have the various parts of our ecosystem collaborate, experiment with new ways of doing things, and in the process, literally aim for the sky with new technology." Said Dr Bernard Leong, Head of Digital Services at SingPost: “There is immense potential in UAV technology for last-mile mail and ecommerce delivery. As SingPost transforms into an eCommerce logistics enabler, we will continue to collaborate with industry leaders and chart new frontiers. "Not only do we want to enable or accelerate eCommerce, we hope to contribute towards building Singapore into a Smart Nation, where technology improves the quality of lives. We seek continuous exploration to break new ground, innovate and harness technology to bring end-to-end solutions that matter to our customers.” The multi-agency Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Committee facilitated this trial. Said its Chairman, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport Pang Kin Keong: “The UAS Committee has been encouraging and discussing with public and private sector organisations on innovative uses of UAS, and facilitating such trials. The technology opens up numerous exciting possibilities which could help us enhance operational productivity, efficiency and effectiveness.” SingPost said the trial drone flight was conducted with permissions and cooperation from IDA, the Ministry of Transport, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, Republic of Singapore Air Force as well as the Singapore Police Force. - CNA/es http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/mail-sent-to-pulau-ubin/2177406.html

Fire said to be reduced then BOOMZ again Another explosion heard at Bukom SINGAPORE - An explosion was heard and seen at Pulau Bukom at noon today - just hours after Shell had announced in a press release that the chemical fires at the oil refinery island, which started at 1.15pm yesterday, had been "significantly reduced". Mr Ben Koh, who works at the PSA container port on the mainland across from Pulau Bukom, told Today he saw flames "suddenly shooting up from a distance" at around 12pm, accompanied by the sound of an explosion which he described as "an echoing boom". Since then, the smoke plume from the island has been visibly larger, said Mr Koh. The island is about 5km off the coast of Singapore. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed in a 12.30pm press release that "there has been a surge in the fire at the manufacturing facility", though the fire "is still contained within the bund wall" at the facility. Boundary cooling operations are being carried out using water jets, to prevent heat exposure to the storage tanks nearby, it added. Two fire engines had been "badly damaged" during fire fighting operations, while another sustained "partial damage", the SCDF said in its statement. No further injuries were reported. Earlier today, the SCDF said in a 6.30am press release that while 100 firefighters were still battling the fires, the situation was "under control". Six fire engines and 13 support vehicles were also at the site. The firefighters who had been working overnight were relieved and replaced by a fresh firefighting crew at 8am, the SCDF later added. In a 10am press release, Shell said it had "worked closely with the SCDF throughout the night to put out the fire at the Pulau Bukom Manufacturing Site", adding that "the fire has now been significantly reduced and is contained to within a bunded area". The six Shell firefighters who sustained minor injuries battling the blaze have gone back to their normal duties, said the oil company. "Staff have also reported for work at Pulau Bukom and controls have been put in place on movements in the affected areas to ensure their safety," it added. "Safety is our top priority. The units in the vicinity of the fire incident remain shut down as a precaution. As such we advise that a larger flare will be visible. The flare is a safety procedure and is no cause for alarm. There are no toxic vapours released." The National Environment Agency said in a public advisory on its website that no toxic gases have been detected on the mainland. The NEA has been "closely monitoring" ambient air quality since yesterday, it added. The increase in the three-hour PSI reading this morning (peaking at 68 at 8am) is due to smoke haze being blown over from South Sumatra, and not the Buko fires, an NEA source told Today.

Hi Everyone, I believe there must be some of us who had immigrated from that island. I am wondering if anyone consider emigrating there (in reverse)? Anyone like to share what would be conducive for such a consideration, preparations...? I am of the opinion that zinc-roofed timber housing would be much cheaper. Bicycles would be much cheaper. Only the boat trips to and froth is not yet cheap.

Spent half a day yesterday with my 7-yr old gal trekking from the jetty all the way to Chek Jawa and it took us about 3 hrs with many breaks. Along the way saw many wildlife, some of which were photographed and shown here. Quite an enjoyable trip for us though it was hot and humid in the woods. Suggest foks with kids to try it out since now school holidays. Must bring sufficient supplies e.g. water, food, mozzie repellent
