  1. Kia's new flagship saloon, the K9, will be called the Quoris in international markets but perhaps with the exception of the European Union (EU). China's car brand, Qoros has filed a lawsuit to prevent Kia from using the name Quoris in the EU. As a result, a preliminary injunction has been imposed on Kia over the usage of the word. A preliminary injunction can be defined as an order by the court requiring the defendant to do or refrain from doing some action while pending a full trial on the merits of the lawsuit. The court determined that consumers could become confused about the 'similar named' car maker and a car model. On the court's judgment, Qoros vice chairman, Volker Steinwascher, commented, "We are pleased with the decision of the court as we succeeded in our first step towards protecting our brand name. We look forward to the first public debut of our vehicles at both the Geneva and the Shanghai auto show in 2013." Qoros was established four years ago from a partnership between Chery and Israel Corporation, a global industrial holding firm. The new brand promises to focus on state-of-the-art technology with high level of user-friendly in-car connectivity and safety standards. It shall target young consumers in Europe and China. The first product from Qoros will be a 4-door compact sedan. Kia has yet to issue a statement regarding the court's decision.

This unique GT-R will be auctioned on eBay and the proceeds will be donated to the Usain Bolt Foundation, which creates educational and cultural opportunities for the young people in Jamaica. The special edition GT-R is an extension of Mr Bolt
  3. Dutch sports car manufacturer, Spyker, has recently announced that they have formed a new alliance with Chinese automaker, Youngman. Spyker CEO Victor Muller hopes that this partnership would raise the Saab name from the ashes. In the agreement, Youngman is reportedly investing around US$12 million in Spyker where most of it will be used to purchase shares in the Dutch company (29.9 percent) and the rest as a loan. Youngman has mentioned that they will not acquire more than the 29.9 percent stake. On top of the above mentioned, Youngman will invest around US$31 million for the development of an all new vehicle known as the D8 P2P, named after the Peking to Paris rally. Spyker unveiled the P2P vehicle previously in 2006 but development for it has been very quiet since then. Spyker has also mentioned that they will now build the vehicle and it will be launched at the end of 2014 with a price tag of around US$250,000. Another part of this new alliance, which will interest Saab fans, is the announcement of the Spyker Phoenix project. Youngman will provide Spyker with the rights to the Phoenix platform which they bought last year. Youngman will also provide the finances needed for the production of any Phoenix-based vehicle and they will hold 80 percent of the project while Spyker holds the remaining 20 percent. The Spyker Phoenix joint venture will feature a new range of vehicles based on the Phoenix platform. In addition to a new 9-3 sedan, planned models include a flagship 9-7 sedan and a 9-6X crossover. Production of these vehicles will take place in both China and Europe.
  4. Maserati announced their partnership with British company 'Benfield', the North East's largest Motor Group, to create the first dedicated showroom for the Trident brand in the UK. Maserati will be the 13th brand sold in the UK by Benfield. The dealership will be operated from Benfield's existing premises on Warwick street, Newcastle and will be open from 10 July 2012. The Warwick Street showroom has the capacity to display all the three cars under the Maserati vehicle range, namely the GranTurismo, GranCabrio and Quattroporte. Additionally, the facility will allow the business to showcase pre-owned Maserati, all of which will be prepared to the highest standards in the adjoining aftersales facility. Giulio Pastore, Managing Director of Maserati Europe said,
  5. UK off-road specialist, Bowler Motorsport and Land Rover have announced their long partnership official. Bowler has been making off-road machines which are powered by Land Rover for over twenty years and has, during that time, enjoyed a fair bit of support from Land Rover. The agreement is not the beginning of an all-new relationship between the two companies. Instead, it merely turns a decades-old informal collaboration into an official partnership. One of Bowler's early offerings was an ARC-spec prototype which uses a Land Rover chassis converted to coil springs with a twin-carb engine (pictured above). Dubbed "Powered by Land Rover," it is aimed to ensure that Bowler has easy access to drivetrains, spare parts and other crucial components to develop its rally-bound SUVs. The very first SUV to wear the "Powered by Land Rover" badge is Bowler's first ever road going model, the EXR S. Bowler EXR The EXR S is powered by a remapped version of the Range Rover Sport's supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine. It churns out 550bhp and 623Nm of torque, which is enough to propel the 1814kg SUV from 0-100km in 4.2 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that features steering wheel mounted shift paddles. Exteriorly, the EXR S looks like a two door variant of the Range Rover, a model that the company has not offered for quite some time. But don't be fooled by its ordinary looks. Under that shell, the EXR S rides on a race bred hydroformed chassis. Managing director of Bowler, Drew Bowler, commented, "We're delighted to announce this partnership, which brings very positive benefits to both Bowler and Land Rover. We've only ever used Land Rover powertrains, and this relationship will give us access to current Land Rover technologies, and a great platform from which to support our racing activities and develop future models." The EXR S is scheduled to make its worldwide debut at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. After the debut, the EXR S will be offered to the public for

  8. When the Japanese and Germans joined forces in World War II some 70 years ago, they created a lot of hardship for mankind. Now, they have come together again but this time, for a good cause. Toyota and BMW announced that they have reached an agreement to jointly research and develop the next generation lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. Such tie-ups are not new though. In 2010, Renault-Nissan-Daimler signed a three-way alliance to boost economies of scale and share high upfront development costs in new areas such as hybrid electric engines. Details are scare at the moment but it is understood that engineers from both companies will look for ways to increase the performance and capacity of lithium-ion batteries through the use of new materials for cathodes, anodes and electrolytes. It would be interesting to see what these two brands come up with eventually in terms of electric and hybrid technologies. As part of the agreement, BMW will supply Toyota with diesel engines of 1.6L and 2.0L capacity for sale in Europe starting in 2014. This shows a change of heart for Toyota, who originally wanted to continue pushing hybrids in Europe, but has realized that the market still prefers diesel-powered vehicles. Ironically, Toyota supplied BMW with 1.6L diesel powerplants for their MINI products between 2002 and 2005.
  9. After ABT Sportsline opened its first showroom in Singapore last year, our neighbours up North showed that they too, have a taste for fast, tuned cars. Reputed German supercar tuner, DMC, has just opened a new outlet in Selangor, Malaysia. As part of its expansion in South East Asia, DMC has appointed ATP Motorsports in Malaysia as its exclusive dealer. The grand opening of the showroom was graced by the presence of Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Porsches and four Malaysian babes. And in a Chinese community, no grand opening is complete without lion dance for an added dose of good luck. According to a recent research, Asia-Pacific has become the world

  11. [extract] It is not a secret about Mazda having zero net profit for the past three years and it is likely that the Japanese auto giant is going to go through another year of financial loss. 12. It looks like the relationship between Suzuki Motors Corporation and Volkswagen Group has gone from bad to worse. Some of us might know about the recent reports of Volkswagen threatening to sue its Japanese partner. And now, Suzuki has begun arbitration proceedings against Volkswagen on the 24 November 2011 at the ICC International Court of Arbitration, located in London. If the proceedings are successful, it will force Volkswagen to sell back its stake in the Japanese company back to Suzuki or to a third party approved by Suzuki Motors. The alliance between the two companies began in 2009. Volkswagen Group bought a 19.89% stake in Suzuki and in turn, Suzuki acquired 1.49% of Volkswagen. The alliance was originally intended for Volkswagen to expand in India where Suzuki has experience and sales success. On top of that, Volkswagen will give Suzuki access to its core technologies; technologies which the Japanese automaker could not afford to develop on its own. The partnership began to crumble when Volkswagen mentioned in an annual report that
  13. Suzuki sold 20% to VW for SGD2.8 Billion to gain access to VW R&D but VW refuse to share and sees Suzuki as an investment dump only. Now VW wants to ban Suzuki from outsourcing diesel engine from Fiat. Under their agreement, Suzuki cannot buy back their 20% but VW can buy over 80% if Suzuki drop partnership. Smelly ang mo just like the americans, always trying to bully asians. Now who do u sar.pork ?
  14. It may be too soon to call their relationship ended, but the estranged partnership between Volkswagen and Suzuki has hit a rough patch as the German auto giant threatens to sue its Japanese partner. In 2009, VW purchased a 19.9 percent stake in Suzuki, in the hopes of creating a deeper global alliance that would give Volkswagen coverage in city cars and in emerging markets such as India. In return, Suzuki would have access to VW's parts bin, from which it could develop new vehicles to replace its existing lineup. The alliance has yielded no results, and for the past few months, the partners have been bickering behind the scenes. According to the Wall Street Journal reports, Suzuki chairman, Osamu Suzuki, wrote on the company website that Suzuki "had found nothing it wanted" from its German partner. Following recent comments from Mr Suzuki that the two companies "aren't even talking", Volkswagen Group decided to make these problems public with an official announcement. Europe's largest automotive group said that after reviewing their partnership, it found that Suzuki broke the contract agreement by purchasing diesel engines from another manufacturer. Although VW did not name the "other manufacturer", Suzuki recently made a deal with the Fiat Group to buy its diesel engines. "Volkswagen takes the view that this contradicts the terms of the cooperation agreement. Suzuki has now been given a period of several weeks to remedy the infringement," the German company said in a statement today. "Volkswagen considers this step regrettable, but necessary, and has offered to discuss the matter with Suzuki. At the same time, the company stresses it still regards Suzuki as an attractive investment," VW added. VW said that even though the cooperation is moving slower than expected, it has not yet reached a final decision.

The partnership between Germany and Japan did not succeed during the World War II. However, they are rumored to come together again and this time, to bring fun instead of destruction to the world. A new report is indicating that Mazda and Audi are considering a partnership to develop a Wankel engine. Inside Line, a free online car magazine, says the two companies have had informal talks to explore the possibility of joining forces to develop rotary engines. Audi recently unveiled the A1 hatchback-based e-tron concept, which features a 254cc Wankel range-extender located beneath the trunk floor. There are now less than 100 engineers working on the existing Renesis engine, says a senior insider at Mazda. However, a newly developed laser ignition system promises a big step forward. Laser ignition does away with the need for spark plugs, making it easier to seal the Wankel's trochoidal combustion chamber for improved efficiency and reduced hydrocarbon emissions. If a funding source is found, the mid-term aim is to develop a new rotary sports car capable of producing just 130g of CO2 per km compared to the polluting 299g/km of the current RX-8. Contributing to this huge improvement are micro-hybrid technology, auto stop/start function, usage of lightweight materials etc.
  16. Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. have announced a new 50-50 joint venture to develop minicar models which they will sell around the world. According to the terms of the deal, the new company would come up with a minicar model made available to both automakers by 2012. The partnership also involves Nissan providing a light van and wagon models to Mitsubishi for the Japanese market and Mitsubishi in turn would supply an SUV to Nissan to sell in the Middle East. The mangement of both Nissan and Mitsubishi have the following comments: "The expansion of the agreement will complement each other's regional characteristics and product lineup," said Mitsubishi Motors President Osamu Masuko. "This agreement is important for Nissan as it supports our expansion in emerging markets, meets immediate capacity needs overseas and enables us to grow our minicar business in Japan," said Renault-Nissan's CEO Carlos Ghosn in a press statement. This is not the first time that these Japanese automotive giants have cooperated. In the past, they have cooperated on numerous projects, including building small engines for minicars under 660 cc. The two automakers also raised the possibility of working together to develop electric models too.
  17. Talks between Volkswagen and Malaysian automaker Proton have broken down without the two sides coming to an agreement on a partnership, according to multiple published reports. The decision by Volkswagen to pull out of talks in favor of "other priorities" led to a drop in Proton's stock by over five percent. This is actually the second time the German automotive conglomerate and Proton held meetings. The two sides first discussed the development of a strategic partnership back in October 2004, with talks fizzling-out in January 2006, before totally collapsing by November 2007. The dive in Proton's shares during Asian stock trading appears to demonstrate investor uncertainty in the company's ability to grow and develop. "Proton's need for a strategic partner to leverage on to enter the global export market is crucial at this juncture before Proton gets further left behind by the competition," firm OSK Research told Forbes. Of recent years, there seemed to be a lack of new proton models in Singapore. Will Dr M

  19. Realised that partners at CAG workshop have decided to go their own ways when I enquired about the cost to perform a 45,000km service on our Superb. Alex is running his own vehicle servicing and repair business and operating out of the Paya Ubi premises. Anyway, the charges quoted by Alex is no longer competitive compared to Servotronic. Labour + oil filter charges are $20 dearer compared to what Servotronic has quoted. As a first-time patron of Servotronic, I must commend that Dennis and Philip, together with their team of mechanics, are dedicated in their work. The brake pads on our ride were thin enough to warrant replacement, although the brake pad change indicator (on the dashboard) has not lit up. For a total price of $290 inclusive of labour for oil change (with self-supplied engine oil), oil filter, front and rear brake pads replacement, I would say that the price is fair.
