Fisker officially unveils its new EMotion all-electric vehicle with 400-mile range https://electrek.co/2018/01/09/fisker-new-emotion-all-electric-vehicle-400-mile-range/ After months of teasing, so much so that we had actually seen pretty much the entire vehicle and we have been aware of its main specs, Fisker officially launched its new EMotion all-electric vehicle at CES in Las Vegas last night. Henrik Fisker, chairman and CEO of Fisker Inc., commented on the launch: “We are truly entering a new era in the way the world thinks about vehicles, the way EVs are charged and the way personal consumer electronics are powered – with Fisker Inc. now clearly at the forefront of that revolution through our worldwide launches at CES. With the EMotion, we’re introducing edgy, dramatic and emotionally-charged design/proportions – complemented with technological innovation that moves us into the future. That design balance is what has made the Fisker brand emotionally connect with our consumers.” As previously reported, Fisker claims a range of ‘over 400 miles of range’, ‘9-minute charging’, and a $130,000 price tag. We already had a pretty good look at the exterior of the Emotion with previous teasers, but the official launch gives our best look yet at the interior of the vehicle: Fisker listed some interior comfort and convenience features in the EMotion: Interior: Defining the Future of Luxury Ultra-Soft Premium Leather Interior Color: Caramel and Midnight Black (Fisker was the first automotive brand to offer a vegan interior as an option – and will do so again with the EMotion) Three Driver-Oriented Screens, With Center Curved Screen Inductive Charging Ports and Special Holders For Four Smartphones (Partially visible) Carbon Fiber Center Console with Additional Storage Space for Tablets and Accessories Four Individual, Electric Adjustable First-Class Seats Optional 27″ Curved Rear Screen For “Chauffeur Edition” Five Seats, Rear Bench Option Individual Four Zone Electric Adjustable Tinted Roof: Electrochromic Glass in Collaboration with Lipik Fisker previously said that his new startup plans to bring the vehicle to market in low volume in 2019, but he didn’t elaborate on the plans at the launch this week. Instead, he said that the EMotion “will be produced in the United States at a location to be announced during the second half of 2018.” With the official unveiling of the vehicle, Fisker also showcased its new solid-state battery, which he claimed achieved a ‘breakthrough’ earlier this year to enable electric cars with ‘500 miles range and 1 min charging’. He commented: “We’ve also made the seemingly impossible, possible with our scientists spearheading the breakthrough in Flexible Solid-State battery technology – which is the next generation in charging everything from your personal cell phone to enabling mass adoption of electric vehicles due to unprecedented ranges and lighting fast charge times. We’re incredibly excited to showcase working solid-state batteries and the vehicle, in-person, on such a massive global stage. Fisker Inc. is about breaking barriers, leading in automotive technologies and ultimately creating the most desirable, functional futuristic electric vehicles.” When announcing the new battery earlier this year, Fisker said that they anticipated automotive production grade to be ready around 2023, but they have now aggressively updated this timeline to 2020 and they even claim that personal electronics/cell phone battery production could arrive “earlier – and possibly in 2018.”

Volkswagen is using the Beijing auto show as its setting for the introduction of their heavily revised flagship vehicle. The 2011 Volkswagen Phaeton will be sold with four different engine choices, and will be available as a long wheelbase. VW-owned brand Audi has had extraordinary success with long wheelbase models in China, where they sell extended versions of the A4, A6, and A8. Rival brands have their own stretched models, including the 2011 BMW 5-Series Long Wheelbase, Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB, and the Volvo S80L. The base level Phaeton will be a comfortable 5.06-meters long, while the extended model will stretch out a further 12 centimeters. New customers can choose to have either two individual seats in the rear, or a three-person bench. Engine choices on the car begin with a 276-horsepower (206 kW / 280 PS) V6 petrol engine, but a torquier turbodiesel V6 (236 hp / 176 kW / 240 PS) is also offered. VW brags that the V6 TDI is capable of getting the car to 100 km/h in about 8.6 seconds. No sprint figures were given for any other engine. The other two engines, a 330 horsepower (246 kW / 335 PS) petrol V8 and a 444 horsepower (331 kW / 450 PS) petrol W12, look to be the same as two of the units currently on offer with the car. This is disappointing, as those engines have been around for four years now, and the car would likely benefit greatly from having a more fuel efficient performance engine with direct injection and stop/start. Volkswagen skipped the blacked-out radiator grille cover on this car, in favor of chrome. The exterior has been remodeled from front to back, while the interior has been given 18-way seats and four-zone climate control.

Over the weekend, we got our first look at official images of the new Audi RS5 when a brochure leaked out onto the interwebs, but it didn't contain any technical details of the latest product from Quattro GmbH. Thankfully, our friends in Ingolstadt have seen fit to drop that information on us this morning, and as we suspected, they have opted to go with an upgraded version of the engine that served so well in the late RS4. The 4.2-liter V8 remains naturally aspirated, but its breathing has been improved to bring the maximum output up to 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. The power peak comes up at 8,250 rpm, just shy of the 8,300 rpm redline, and maximum torque is delivered throughout the range between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. The RS5 comes out the factory with the ability to accelerate to 62 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds on the way to a governed top speed of 155 mph. Owners that wish to exceed that speed can have the governor unlocked, enabling a terminal velocity of 174 mph. As usual with higher performance Audi models, Quattro all-wheel-drive is the order of the day for power distribution. However, unlike other recent applications that have used a Torsen center differential, the RS5 features the first use of a new crown gear differential with electronically controlled clutch pack. The torque split can be varied from the nominal 40:60 front-to-rear to as much as 70 percent front or 85 percent rear. An optional active torque vectoring rear differential is also available to further improve the RS5's handling. The only available gearbox in the RS5 is a new seven-speed S-Tronic dual clutch transmission (DCT). Hopefully now that Audi has a high-output DCT, we'll also see it replace the dreadful R-Tronic unit in the R8 soon. The RS5 will get its public debut in Geneva next week and goes on sale in Europe this spring for a base price of

Thomson residents upset over plans for funeral parlour in their backyard By Asha Popatlal, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 07 October 2007 2215 hrs SINGAPORE: Residents in Thomson are upset over plans to build a funeral parlour in the area and they expressed their unhappiness to the Transport Minister on Sunday. Minister Raymond Lim was holding a dialogue session with the residents after his community visit to the Thomson Division. The session almost got derailed by a lively exchange on the intended building of a funeral parlour in Sin Ming. Residents asked why the URA and HDB want to build another funeral parlour in the area when there are already many funeral parlours in the area. They also wanted to know how this would adversely affect the prices of their houses and whether the government would compensate them for the drop in property prices. In fact, the issue has been brewing for months now. Residents did meet URA representatives but they were disappointed. One resident said: "When they tell me that the meeting was like something (that has been) finalised, (it) reminded me of the show 'Just Follow Law'. Somebody upstairs say, build it there, so build it there. If this is something so important in Singapore, why there? Why not Orchard Road area?" Another resident said: "I agree when he (URA representative) said that as a result of ageing population, we needed more funeral parlours; (it) made sense. "What the residents are against is: why Sin Ming? Are we now creating the area into a funeral hub? He said, 'having such a beautiful facade is going to help'. "Another shocking thing I hear from one official is that 'it's going to look like it's Disneyland'. Come on, death is something that should be dignified, not a Disneyland concept. So that was another disappointment for the residents." A third resident said: "According to somebody who gave me this (information), in the central region - we are in the central region - (there are) 21 funeral services. There are another two in the northeast and one in the east. A lot of places do not have funeral parlours, so why Sin Ming? One of the strongest reasons URA gave is that it's central. I don't know why it is central. There is no MRT service going there and buses servicing the road are also very few." MP Hri Kumar, who was at the dialogue session with Minister Lim, addressed the concerns of the residents. Mr Hri Kumar acknowledged that the siting of the funeral parlour was a difficult issue. But he said the decision is not final and that discussions are still going on with the authorities on ideas such as having a commercial building on the adjoining plot to block the view of the funeral parlour from residents. Mr Hri Kumar added that there would be no Disneyland concept. "This Disneyland idea, not sure how it came about, maybe a poor choice of words. As I understand it, there is no Disneyland concept. It's not going to be a rollercoaster ride into the parlour," he said. He also explained why the authorities chose Sin Ming. Mr Hri Kumar said: "In the unfortunate incident of someone passing away, relatives and friends from all over the island will want to come and pay their respects, and the feedback from the funeral parlour operators is that when you have a parlour in the outskirts, in a very difficult or very inaccessible part of the country, it makes life difficult for residents from around the country to go and visit and pay their respects." He said that when HDB and URA tendered out some land in Yishun for a funeral parlour some years ago, it failed because operators said it was not commercially feasible as it was too far-off. - CNA/ir ------------- i hate to agree. Had mine 10K servicing with Terrence last Sunday and I'm now officially a 20wt oil convert! The engine now no longer has to cope with the crappy 20W50 mineral used by C&C. Decided to go with a 20wt as it was highly recommended in the user manual, experience with M1 0W20 for the past few days was a pleasant one, I'm surprised by the throttle response and smoothness. Besides that, engine note was much softer during cold morning starts. Honestly, it took me quite a while to overcome the 20wt barrier and I'm glad I did. I have also added a few ounces of LC20 to beef up the oil. Will be draining the oil out at 7.5K for an UOA to determine engine health, was told 5W20 EP is reaching our shores soon.
