(File photo: AP/Vincent Thian) Rashvinjeet S Bedi 20 Oct 2022 12:21PM (Updated: 20 Oct 2022 12:52PM) PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will hold its 15th General Election (GE15) on Nov 19, said the Election Commission (EC) on Thursday (Oct 20). Nomination Day will be on Nov 5, while early voting is set to be held on Nov 15, said EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh. "The campaigning period has been set for 14 days, from the date of nomination to 11.59pm on Nov 18," he said during a press conference. He added that a by-election for the Bugaya state seat in Sabah will also be held during the same period. Mr Abdul Ghani also said that the elections are expected to cost RM1.01 billion (US$213 million). More than 21 million people will be eligible to cast their votes during the elections. Applications for overseas postal voters will close on Oct 23, he said. On Oct 10, caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that parliament has been dissolved, paving the way for national elections to be held before the end of the year. The states of Perak, Perlis and Pahang have also dissolved their legislatures and state polls will be held concurrently with the national elections. Six other states – three under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition and the other three led by Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) – decided not to dissolve their assemblies for now. The three states under PH are Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Penang while the states under PAS rule are Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah. PAS is a member of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition together with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), among others. The state assemblies of Sabah, Sarawak, Johor and Melaka are out of the equation as polls were held recently. An election had not been due until September 2023, but Mr Ismail Sabri had been under pressure from some factions of his ruling coalition to hold the vote earlier. On Sep 30, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) supreme council decided that parliament must be dissolved soon so that GE15 can be held this year. UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is facing 47 charges of criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering, had been very vocal in pushing for snap polls, ostensibly to seek a fresh mandate from the people. UMNO’s call for an early GE15 has been criticised by the opposition and Mr Ismail Sabri’s own Cabinet members as Malaysia’s Meteorological Department has warned of floods during the north-east monsoon season, which typically starts in November and ends in March. Following the dissolution of parliament, Malaysia’s King Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah said he had no choice but to consent to the dissolution of the parliament. In a statement on Oct 10, Comptroller of the Royal Household of Istana Negara, Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, said that the ruler was disappointed with the current political developments in the country. There are 222 seats in the Lower House. In GE14, PH won 113 seats. At that time, its component parties were Parti Keadilan Rakyat, Democratic Action Party, Parti Amanah Negara and Bersatu. Barisan Nasional won 79 seats while PAS won 18 seats. Twelve seats were won by other parties and independent candidates. 2. Members of the public are advised to make nominations for their central provident fund (CPF) monies as early as possible, after CPF monies left unclaimed with the Insolvency and Public Trustee’s Office over the last six years reached a total of S$211 million. The Straits Times reported that the bulk of these unclaimed monies belonged to dead people who did not nominate anyone to receive their CPF funds. According to the Ministry of Finance, the monies are said to be unclaimed if owners are uncontactable after repeated attempts by the agencies to do so. All valid claims will be repaid, regardless of how long the monies have been held. According to the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Law, about S$240 million in unclaimed monies was left with the government over the last six years https://mothership.sg/2019/10/nominate-benefactor-early-unclaimed-cpf-money-211-million/
  3. saw this recent, dated May 2015, letter from CPF with regards to grand-dad passing (which was more than 2 decades ago).. it mentioned that it was just notified that xxx had passed and yyy as related is entitled to some funds and needs to fill up the attached form. (something like that as i only took a quick glance at mom's letter) the absence of CPF nomination caused the held back of his CPF monies for more than 2 decades.. what horror!! QN: does anybody know if this is normal or should the normal process be faster? how much faster will the CPF nomination speed things up? i should be going to do up my CPF nomination as well, but it seems like you can only submit the nomination in person.. will be grateful if others can share their experiences or stories that you may have hear from your friends. TIA!
  4. Any thoughts? The President of Singapore, Tony Tan, has issued a writ of election for Punggol East constituency with Nomination Day being next Wednesday, the16th of January. If more than one candidate is nominated, Polling Day will take place later this month on the 26th of January. The Punggol East seat was left vacant after MP Michael Palmer stepped down due to an extra-marital affair last month. Pasir Ris-Punggol MP, Teo Ser Luck, has been standing in as caretaker MP in recent weeks. PM Lee said in a statement on Wednesday that he advised the President to call the by-election quickly as it was important that Punggol residents "can have their own MP in Parliament" and because of a "busy national agenda this year". "The White Paper on Population will soon be debated in Parliament. Budget 2013 is around the corner. The Our Singapore Conversation is translating the views of citizens into programmes to improve our lives," he added. The single-seat constituency is expected to be hotly contested with as many as five parties -- including the Workers' Party, Singapore Democratic Party, the Singapore Democratic Alliance and even the Reform Party -- expressing interest in contesting the by-election in recent weeks. On Tuesday, a surprise candidate, 40-year-old surgeon, Dr Koh Poh Koon, may have emerged as the People's Action Party (PAP) choice, after he was seen accompanying Teo during an Meet-the-People session. This is the second by-election is as many years, after Hougang also held a by-election last year, which Workers' Party member Png Eng Huat won decisively over PAP candidate Desmond Choo. But this time around, Punggol East is seen as a stronghold for the PAP, going by the last general election results in May 2011 when Palmer defeated WP candidate, Lee Li Lian, by a convincing 54.5 percent to 41 percent of votes. A third candidate, Singapore Democratic Alliance's Desmond Lim received 4.4 percent of votes. However, analysts Yahoo! Singapore spoke to last month said that if the contest were to be a straight fight between the WP and PAP, the former could be seen as favourites. "This is a competitive seat with a three-corner fight last round. A one-on-one contest will make this a potentially winnable seat for the opposition," said Bridget Welsh, associate professor in Political Science at Singapore Management University (SMU). Meanwhile, Punngol-East resident Syed Muhammad, 25, welcomed the possibility of a multi-party contest. "I believe that it is a good idea to let the 5 parties compete as our PM mentioned in his statement he wants us (residents) to vote for the best MP to represent us. By having as many as five parties contest, I believe residents will be able to wisely consider who is best suited for the job," he said. Another resident, Nadh, a 25-year-old freelance designer, welcomed the timing of the by-election. "I like how they are acting fast to get a replacement for Palmer. I don't think it's too rushed because residents here just want a fast solution," he said. 8. Taken from yahoo 1236PM: Objection raised by SDP team led by Dr Vincent Wijeysingha at Holland-Bukit GRC. It contests that PAP candidate Miss Sim Ann is listed in her nomination papers as "unemployed" but as she is still serving out her notice of resignation, technically, she is still in the Civil Service, which disqualifies her from the GE. The SDP team objects to her candidacy and strenuously request the Returning Officer to declare her candidacy null and void. 1246PM: SDP team's objection at Holland-Bukit Timah GRC noted but over-ruled by Assistant Returning Officer. Actually if still serving is considered employed
  9. As in the past what were the excuses used to disqualify people from registering their nomination? 1. Not "put minority race here" enough.
  10. Obama has won the first round with Clinton coming in 3rd, behind John Edwards for the Democrats. It looks like it's going to get interesting this coming Nov.
