It's been more than half a century since some of the first concept cars boasting self-driving features were presented to the world and they're still not on the roads. But many auto executives say the industry is on the cusp of welcoming vehicles that make the idea of keeping both hands on the wheel an anachronism. General Motors showed off "dream cars" in the late 1950s like the Firebird II and Cadillac Cyclone with features automakers are now starting to roll out in new models as the technology, based on sensors, lasers, radar systems, GPS, cameras and microchips -- improves and becomes less costly. While most industry officials don't envision a fully self-driving, or autonomous, vehicle before 2025, features such as adaptive cruise control or traffic jam assist that automatically slow or apply the brakes for a car in certain situations are already being introduced. And much like anti-lock brakes became the norm after initial resistance, these new technologies will prepare drivers for a future where they are needed less. "The whole concept of a car being able to drive itself is pretty profound," said Larry Burns, GM's former research and development chief and an adviser for Google's self-driving car project. "This is the most transformational play to hit the auto industry in 125 years." The progress has been in the making for decades as GM's Firebird II, introduced in 1956, included a system to work with an electrical wire embedded in the highway to guide the car. Three years later, the rocket-like Cyclone boasted an autopilot system that steered the car and radar in front nose cones that warned of a collision and automatically applied the brakes. However, the pace of invention has quickened, with such automakers as GM, Ford Motor Co, Toyota Motor Corp and Volkswagen AG developing technologies to help drivers avoid accidents. Some even envision a future where today's cars are more amusement. "In the same way we all used to travel on horses and now horses are entertainment, you could imagine automobiles driven by people becoming more entertainment," said Chris Urmson, the Google program's technical head. In a world where Nevada and Florida have already passed laws allowing the licensing of self-driving cars, the rush is on to make the job easier for drivers. For many, the ultimate goal is to take the steering wheel totally out of consumers' hands and eliminate accidents altogether. "Once we have a car that will never crash, why don't we let it drive?" said Nady Boules, GM's director of autonomous technology development. However, Boules and executives like him will have to win over a public that includes those who love to drive or simply wouldn't trust their lives to a robot. Others, like long-haul truckers, could resist the technology for fear of job losses. Blue screen of hell "My mental model of trust in technology is a Windows blue screen of death. That's how much faith I have in PCs and computer systems," said Bryan Reimer, a research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's AgeLab. Reimer, whose group studies human behavior in relation to transportation safety and has worked with BMW, Ford and Toyota, said people are terrible overseers of highly autonomous systems and a car that helps drivers rather than replaces them would be a better model. J.D. Power and Associates found 37 percent of U.S. consumers it surveyed in March were interested in autonomous driving technology, but only 20 percent definitely or probably would buy it at an estimated price of $3,000. Consulting firm Accenture said last year that almost half of U.S. and British consumers it polled would be comfortable in a self-driving car. Even if the industry eventually wins the hearts and minds of most consumers, it also must establish the infrastructure that supports self-driving cars, including not only the technology but the necessary legal and liability frameworks -- things that may takes years to put in place. Bill Windsor, associate vice president of consumer safety at insurer Nationwide Mutual, pointed out the airline industry has had an autopilot feature for years, but people still man the cockpit. The same will be true for cars. "It's going to be a long time before we're going to feel comfortable turning over all the day-to-day decisions in driving to a computer," he said. Costs must come down as well. For instance, the laser-based Light Detection and Ranging system used by Google costs $70,000 according to a study released this month by consulting firm KPMG and the Center for Automotive Research (CAR). For that reason, the rollout over the next decade of more semi-autonomous features that assist drivers or take control of cars in only some cases is the path the industry is taking with the idea of preparing consumers for a future with fully driverless cars. "The socialization of autonomous driving is actually the difficult part. The invention of the vehicle is the easy part," said John Hanson, Toyota's national manager for environmental, safety and quality issues. The Japanese automaker has two autonomous car programs, one in Japan and the other in Ann Arbor, Michigan. "George Jetson" days not close Even some automakers developing semi-autonomous features for their cars don't believe consumers will accept a future without human drivers. "The days of George Jetson getting in the vehicle, saying 'to the office' and then reading a newspaper, we don't envision for an awful long time," said Tom Baloga, BMW's US vice president of engineering. "We will always be the ultimate driving machine," he said, adding that there will be times when bored drivers stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic will turn over control of their cars. BMW has worked on autonomous technology for more than a decade. Others developing autonomous technologies include: Honda , Hyundai, Mercedes, Nissan and Volvo, as well as suppliers, technology firms and universities. Chip giant Intel Corp created a $100 million fund in February to invest in future auto technology. "The industry appears to be on the cusp of revolutionary change ... engendered by the advent of autonomous or 'self-driving' vehicles. And the timing may be sooner than you think," KPMG and CAR said in their study. GM, for instance, believes semi-autonomous cars will be available by mid-decade with more sophisticated self-driving systems by the end of the decade. Cadillac is testing a feature dubbed "Super Cruise" that is capable of fully automatic steering, braking and lane centering in certain highway driving that could be ready for production by mid-decade. Meanwhile Bill Ford, the chairman of rival Ford Motor, sees semi-autonomous driving technology by 2025 like driver-initiated autopilot systems, as well as, the ability to reserve parking spots ahead of your destination in a linked network, with fully autonomous cars following after that. "There's a lot of moving parts to all of this, but it's almost limitless in terms of what we can do," he said in June at an event in California's Silicon Valley. Ford's 2013 Fusion mid-sized car includes a lane-keeping aid system, an active park assist function, adaptive cruise control and collision warning. Self-driving cars: "Not in our lifetime" Google launched its autonomous car program in 2010, viewing the problem as one of computer science. It has tested its modified Toyota Prius and Lexus RX 450h cars over more than 300,000 miles and is talking with almost every automaker about its technology. Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said the company has not figured out how it would bring its technology to market, but licensing it is an option. "Self-driving cars should in our lifetime become the predominant way," he told Reuters in July. Last year, one of Google's self-driving cars was involved in a minor accident, but supporting the idea that robots would be better drivers it occurred when the car was under human control. The self-driving mode has yet to be in a fender bender. Bob Casey, the curator of transportation at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, regarded the self-guiding driving system of GM's Firebird II concept car of more than 50 years ago "almost as a parlor trick," but he said the technology now brings such cars closer to reality. The question is whether the auto industry is ready for that. "Part of the fundamental attraction of automobiles has been the actual driving of them," he said. Mr Lee, who is also the PAP's Secretary General, made these observations in the latest issue of Petir, the party's magazine. The editorial comes in the wake of the party's performance in the last General Election, having won 81 out of 87 seats. He said the ruling People's Action Party must reflect on the meaning of the May 7 General Election, and strengthen and reinvent itself to maintain a leading role in Singapore politics. He also said the party must also strengthen its presence in cyberspace and learn to use the new media more effectively. This meant not just going onto Facebook and Twitter, but being on the same wavelength as the netizens and resonating with the Internet generation. That way, the MPs and leaders can continue serving the widest spread of society and work with all citizens to shape the new Singapore together. Mr Lee said constituency work also remains crucial, as a caring, hardworking and effective MP, backed by a strong team of activists and the party, can make the difference. He said this was clear in the General Election as MPs who had worked hard, enjoyed strong support. As for the opposition wards, Mr Lee urges the PAP to maintain its presence, keep the branch active and take care of supporters and fight hard to win back the constituency. Mr Lee added: "Fundamentally, we need to get Singaporeans to see the PAP for what it is and what it has always been - their champion, acting on their behalf, working with them and for them." What brake pad can I change to on a 05 or 06 Vios. Left two yeas left but need to change coz I tried the car recently and the stopping is terrible. Will not vbe doing braided hose as that would be too much effort. Fluid have been changed a few times. I am suspecting brake pads, I have sprayed brake cleaner with no improvement. What pads can I buy? I hope to get some better pads and brake dust or rotor wear is fine.

Laser Power Systems (LPS) from Connecticut, USA, is developing a new method of automotive propulsion with one of the most dense materials known in nature: thorium. Because thorium is so dense it has the potential to produce tremendous amounts of heat. The company has been experimenting with small bits of thorium, creating a laser that heats water, produces steam and powers a mini turbine. Cadillac World Thorium Fuel Concept (Image Courtesy www.cutedesign.com) Current models of the engine weigh 500 pounds, easily fitting into the engine area of a conventionally-designed vehicle. According to CEO Charles Stevens, just one gram of the substance yields more energy than 7,396 gallons (28,000 L) of gasoline and 8 grams would power the typical car for a century. The idea of using thorium is not new. In 2009, Loren Kulesus designed the Cadillac World Thorium Fuel Concept Car. LPS is developing the technology so it can be mass-produced. Wider Implications of ThoriumAccording to Robert Hargraves, “low or non-CO2 emitting energy sources must be cheaper than coal or will ultimately fail to displace fossil fuels.” The United States uses 20% of the world’s energy today and, according to Hargraves, if it cut its CO2 emissions to zero, 80% produced by other countries would still be a problem. With CO2 emissions climbing seemingly beyond all bounds, pessimism is rampant and bold ideas are needed. Thorium may also be the answer to the world’s nuclear energy conundrum and Wikipedia provides some of its advantages: Weapons-grade fissionable material (233U) is harder to retrieve safely and clandestinely from a thorium reactor; this means, for example, Iran could be asked to develop only a thorium based reactor, virtually eliminating the issue of nuclear weapon development. Thorium produces 10 to 10,000 times less long-lived radioactive waste; Thorium mining produces a single pure isotope, whereas the mixture of natural uranium isotopes must be enriched to function in most common reactor designs. The same cycle could also use the fissionable U-238 component of the natural uranium, and also contained in the depleted reactor fuel; Thorium cannot sustain a nuclear chain reaction without priming,[29] so fission stops by default in an accelerator driven reactor. Read in today ST with regards to a road accident along KJE towards Woodlands where the FW driver, driving a van had an accident along KJE. The van landed on the centre divider and was killed on the spot. With him, he took along a passenger with him and several injured. The other vehicle involved also injured and send to hospital. Can't get the news with ST on-line. Driving daily, never fail to meet this FW drivers speeding in their pick-up, vans, lorries and buses behind you.... Its either they drive fast on outer lane (1st lane) or slow on the outer lane with their commercial vehicles. They don't seem to understand that these vehicles are to keep to the left unless making a 'right' turn. Furthermore, some of this FW drivers who are driving lorries are carrying workers (of the same kind) behind them.... Anyone want to dispute this, please drive along Jalan Buroh (from West Coast Highway to Jurong), Jalan Boon Lay, PIE from Tuas (in the direction to Airport) or PIE after Jurong Town Hall Road, Jalan Bahar, Pioneer Road and the area around Jurong West extension. Those mcf members here working in Jurong areas will understand the situation there ....

Or another scheme or something. Some sort where the owner of a car is limited to 1 day user per week (or similar, maybe 52 days a year). Extremely restricted usage at much lower COE prices. Of course, there's no way to regulate it right now. Only chance is probably GPS tracking.... I really don't mind, at this point......I don't need to use a car a lot of times......just sometimes, when I go back to JB I guess Cat A car will be something like 63K next bidding. Sigh......

I am in my mid 30s. How many of you still change job when you are in your mid 30s? I like my job. Boss likes me. Hours are ok and pay is very decent. However i am presented with a job opportunity. Same type of work. But pay is around 20% more. How many of you would risk giving up a stable and good job for another 20% with another company?

I need to send my car to Johor workshop for some minor engine work. The job needs 2 days to complete. I wonder what do you all do if a job needs 2 days? Rent a room in johor and stay there overnight? Or come back to SG and return the next day (sounds quite tedious).

Hi all, i have a headache on my car, hope to get some help or advise Brought this Lancer EX 1.5 car a while ago, drive around and feel have vibration (personally dont like vibrations) rating the vibration density as 35/100 so butt itchy go check my engine mount at a amk autopoint work shop then workshop claims that 3 mount is broken - 100k car 3 years old. Went JB Stockist they only have inspira 1.8L NON ORIGINAL engine mount so brought to try ~ 130sgd, went back to the autopoint workshop he installed then found that 3 matches but 1 dont so lan lan have to ask him to order that 1 piece which he claims to be original to fit in. At night collect car feel than vibration got worse density 90/100 paid $250 for the labour and 1 original mount (so now 3 inspira 1 original) Drive for a day really bei ta han, go back to him then he suggest non original mount have such problem so i said ok then change the other 3 mount to original also then, at night collect paid another $380 for the 3 original mounts and labour (all 4 original) Tested the car, vibration reduced drastically density 5/100, so drove off 1st day - perfect 5/100 2nd day - perfect 5/100 3rd day - vib starts to increase density 20/100 4th day - 40/100 5th day - 50/100 1 week later till now - 75/100 went back to autopoint he said all is original liao also cant figure out what is wrong, i asked him to check screw tightening, he refix 3 easier enigine mount vibration become slightly better 70/100 but still vibrating a lot, asked him why 1st 2 days ok then after that become worse and worse he say might be what sensor here and there but i dont make sense when it works perfect for 2 days and before i change mount the vibration also much lesser than now, change and become worse. then he say put car and wait which i didnt as i highly doubt his efficency Now after 1 more week vibration becomes 80/100 le, then in D density is 80/100, in R density is 90/100 in N density is around 70/100. Thinking of going to stockist personally to change the engine mount to all original again what do you think? Please help i already wasted $720 for this problem that usually people spend $600 on. and new original mount is gonna waste me $600 again

What kind of people is that ? How would the Msia authority feel ? SINGAPORE: A Singaporean car reported stolen in Johor last week has been found. On Wednesday, property manager John Chew said he received news that his car has been found by the Johor Police. Mr Chew's car went missing on Saturday after he parked it outside a restaurant in Johor, just 10 kilometres from the Causeway. He said Johor police called him on Wednesday morning saying that they had found the car and asked him to retrieve it. But he declined, saying he was uncomfortable travelling to Johor. He wants the car to be delivered to Singapore and to the Singapore Police instead. Mr Chew said he does not know if his belongings - passports and golf bags - are still intact. He added that Johor police told him two golf bags were found in the car. He does not know how or where the car was found. - CNA/cc

Once again, the latest fire and brimstone sermon by Marc Faber is absolutely spot on, starting and ending with his "policy" recommendation for what the US needs: "I will tell you what the US needs. The US needs a Lee Kwan Yew who stands in front of the US and tells them, listen you lazy bugger, now you have to tighten your belts, you have to save more, work more for lower salaries and only through that will we get out of the current dilemma that essentially prevents the economy from growing." No money printing, no extensive protests, no excuses. Of course, this would have to accompany a global overhaul of the system, something Zero Hedge has been advocating since day one, as it is impossible to reform this broken system from within: "The problem i have with the investment universe is that i find it difficult to envision how the US and western Europe can return to healthy sustainable growth without a complete purge of the financial system and some type of catalyst. Something that restores some measure of social cohesion among people; it could be hyperinflation, a complete credit market collapse, widespread sovereign defaults, civil strife, major military confrontation.
