MG is developing a range of turbocharged, direct-injected gasoline engines which will be launched in China at the end of 2014, and arriving in Europe a year later. These engines include 1.4-litre and 1.5-litre force-fed units as well as a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit that claims to rival Ford's Ecoboost unit. Given that Ford's 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has been named the 2012 'International Engine of the Year' - MG has got some very serious work to do. "Our benchmark for the 1.0-litre has to be the Ford Ecoboost engine," commented MG's Head of Powertrain, Paul McNamara. "Ford has got the technology to market first and changed perceptions. Our goal is to be competitive with their figures and attain the best real-world results possible," McNamara added. The larger 1.4-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged engines will be available in the MG3, MG5, MG6 and a production version of the CS Concept (above) displayed at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. In addition to new power plants, MG is also working on two dual-clutch transmissions, namely a wet version that can handle 359Nm of torque and a dry version that can take up to 223Nm of torque. The wet dual-clutch transmission will go on sale in China this year while the dry one will likely go into production in 2015. The MG Car Company Limited was a former British sports car manufacturer founded in the 1920s. On 22nd July 2005, the Nanjing Automobile Group purchased the rights to the MG brand and the assets of the MG Rover Group, creating a new company called MG Motor.

MG has revealed the 2013 Euro-spec MG3 at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. The new MG3 is the production version of the MG Zero concept car which was displayed at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show. The U.K. designed and engineered supermini will be assembled at Longbridge, U.K. MG U.K. Sales and Marketing Chief, Guy Jones, commented that the new MG3 is designed to compete with the MINI, Citroen DS3 and Vauxhall Adam and hence will be available with a wide variety of customisation options for both the interior and exterior. The black A-pillars of the concept had made it production, which gives the impression of a wrap-around windscreen. No interior photo of the new car is available but do expect the futuristic dashboard of the concept (below) to be heavily toned down. The 2013 MG3 measures 4,015mm x 1,728mm x 1,520mm (L x W x H) with a wheelbase of 2,520mm. This makes the car larger than its British rival, the MINI Cooper, in all dimensions. The new MG3 will be powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder VTi-TECH petrol engine producing 104bhp. The engine will be connected to a five-speed manual transmission.

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) has signed a deal with Thailand's Charoen Pokphand Group to set up an assembly plant in the land of thousand smiles. The investment will cost SAIC 1.8 million yuan in the initial stage. SAIC will hold 51% stake in the joint venture while Charoen Pokphand Group will hold the rest of the 49%. Production will begin in 2014 with a minimum capacity of 50,000 units per year. With the investment, SAIC hopes to expand its business into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The first model to be produced in Thailand will be the MG 6, which is also being manufactured in the UK besides China. From a cost point of view, it is more economical to set up plants in foreign countries than to export, probably due to savings in shipping expenses. The MG 6 is based on the Roewe 550 sedan, which is in turn based on the Rover 75, a model dating back in 1999. The 4.6m long MG 6 is powered by a turbocharged 1.8-litre k-series engine producing 160bhp. All models are equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission.

[extract] SAIC-owned MG returned to the UK market in 2011 with the MG6 compact sedan. In saloon and five-door body styles, sales of the MG6 in the UK was found wanting with only 15 units sold in October 2011. This should not come as a surprise as the MG6 is based on SAIC

[extract] In the 1990s a friend of mine used to run a 1960s MGB GT as her daily driver (a metallic red coloured one similar to the one above). I suppose it is because of my acquaintance with this individual that I now adore classic British sports cars from the 1950s and 1960s. I simply do. I suppose it

MG Rover's old Longbridge car plant is set to comeback in a big way when Shanghai Automotice (SAIC) / MG begins building its first all new car in 15 years at the end of the year. The plant will start producing the MG6 mid-size model from knocked-down kits imported from China, preceding the UK relaunch of MG as a "value brand" in 2011. The all new car will be available initially as a five-door fastback, with a four-door saloon to follow later on. The automaker optimistically told the Financial Times that customer clinics have compared the MG6 with the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Skoda Octavia and even with small BMWs. Prices in the UK are said to range between
