If you feel your 2019 Mazda MX-5 that has the uprated 181bhp 2.0-litre engine not brisk enough, BBR has the solution for you. First up is the performance package called Super 200 and it include the brand's cold air intake system, stainless steel exhaust manifold, K&N air filter and StarChip ECU remap, boosting the horsepower figure by 18bhp and 14Nm of torque, or 199bhp and 224Nm of torque in total. The second package (Super 220) is the one that catches our attention and in addition to what has been installed in the Super 200 package, the Super 220 includes high-performance camshafts, valve springs and retainers, pushing the total power output to 218bhp and 217Nm of torque. That said, those figures have been achieved using 99-octane gasoline. “This is the first time that over 100bhp-per-litre has been achieved from a normally aspirated Mazda MX-5motor without internal modifications”, said the tuner’s Managing Director, Neil McKay. “And additional development has seen BBR achieve more than 110 hp per liter with the inclusion of our bespoke performance camshafts, which is astonishing for a road-friendly engine that now also produces over 200Nm from just 3,000rpm.” The aftermarket company also has other goodies like a 2.5-inch center exhaust section with a choice of rear silencers, and a 4-into-1 tuned stainless steel exhaust manifold that incorporates a performance catalytic converter, to push out a couple of extra horses. Both packages have a 12- to 36-month extendable warranty.

Alfa Romeo has revealed plans to spruce up its model offerings. The aggressive manoeuvre will see the Italian automaker produce eight new models by 2018 - in the aim to reach an annual sales target of 400,000 units. Other than the upcoming 4C, it seems that things at Alfa has been relatively quiet. But recently, it presented an ambitious plan to introduce eight new models in the next five years. The new lineup will comprise of compact family cars (C segment), mid-sized sedans (E segment), compact SUVs, and even a full-sized flagship sedan. At this point of time, we couldn't quite imagine how a stately, BMW 7 Series-like Alfa Romeo will be like. Being the passionate, fun-to-drive car manufacturer as we know it, Alfa did not forget to include a "Specialty product" in its plans. The model is widely believed to be the compact sports car, which is a joint project with Mazda to replace the MX-5. Think of it as the Alfa/Mazda version of the 86/BRZ. All these certainly brings up the vibe for Alfa Romeo. But we are keeping our fingers crossed that it wouldn't follow the footsteps of Lotus'.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata was regarded as one of the best-driving, most influential sports cars of the past two decades. And believe it or not, one of these iconic sports cars from Mazda has been lying around in the garage, never driven for 23 years. Recently, on auction site eBay, an owner, from Kingman, Arizona, has listed his 1990 Mazda MX-5 Miata for sale. In the description, the seller said the car, which was never registered, didn't come with a set of keys, so he had to have a set made. Though the paint is clean and shiny, the Miata didn't escape minor cosmetic damage over the years, with scratches on the hood, the trunk and the factory hardtop that is included with the car. The front, right fender has a small dent as well. The seller also added that the car was stored in a building with windows, so the paint is faded in some places. It's antenna and battery is missing, and the only non-original parts on the car are the windshield wipers. The clear-title car comes with all paperwork, according to the seller, but, besides the owners' manual, he didn't specify what other documentation would be included. But more impressively, the car has only clocked 44km on its odometer! According to the seller, he bought the car with 32km on it, and explained that 11km were added when the car was towed home. Frankly speaking, it's getting hard to find ones that haven't been beaten to hell. If this is accurate, it is about the cleanest and nicest Miata we have ever seen, and it looks like it just came off the showroom floor more than 20 years ago. Though its story is a bit strange, this barn find appears to be in excellent shape and looks like a really good deal not to be missed. As of this writing, the auction has one day to go, and the current bid is just USD$10,500 (S$13,335). Unfortunately, it's a left-hand drive and if someone were to ship it over to Singapore, it would most probably lay around in the garage too, till its next owner ships it back overseas. Mazda unveiled the MX5 Yusho prototype at the 2012 Auto Mobil International Show (AMI) in Leipzig, Germany. Named after the Japanese word for "Victory", the matte white finished sits on 17-inch anthracite grey alloy wheels wrapped by semi-slick 215/45 R17 tires. The prototype sits lower with a boot lid spoiler and a carbon-fiber rear diffuser with twin centre mounted exhausts. Under the bonnet, you can find a supercharged 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine, together with an intercooler, special Cosworth pistons and connecting rods. A custom exhaust system, reprogrammed software, fuel injectors, metal sport catalysts are connected to a transmission with a sports clutch. All the above mentioned and rather overhauled powertrain has a maximum output of 237hp and peak torque of 274Nm maxing out at 240km/h. The all time classic can now look forward to a smaller brother, the Mazda MX-2. Set to be unveiled in 2012, the new addition to the Mazda family is definitely going to create waves, especially among the fans of the current Mazda MX-5. If this new family member is going to be as good as or better than the already timeless MX-5, the affordable, lightweight convertible sports-car market is going to be overwhelmed by this new baby. The special thing about the Mazda MX-5 is that its design has remained uncannily similar ever since it was put into production in 1989, much like Porsche I have to admit. However, the fellas at Mazda managed to pull off an amazing design, one that looked balanced, simple and most importantly, classically 'British' looking sportscar while the Porsche still looks rather odd even though it is a staggering piece of engineering genius. And ever since then, the MX-5 has been known to be the benchmark for the best and most value-for-money sportscar that one can buy. With the MX-2, I think Mazda will want to continue their tradition of building the best affordable sportscar, just that this is downsized even further. Being lighter may also mean less expensive. But less expensive doesn't always mean lower performance as the MX-5 has already demonstrated to the world for more than a decade. Its design looks like a culmination of three different cars, from the Ferrari California inspired headlamps and the Mazda Furai concept's swooping lines with the rest of the body inspired by the new BMW Z4, I think this car looks brilliant! And what comes under the bonnet doesn't disappoint. Small capacity engines ranging from 0.7litres to 1.6litres will be the powerplant in the MX-2. The range topping 1.6litre will be turbocharged to produce 160bhp on tap. Though that might not seem a lot, combine that with its minimal weight, this car will humiliate heavier and more expensive cars in future.. So don't look so smug in that BMW because a Mazda will be leaving you choking on its dust. If this really does make it to our shores, the MX-2 will be the young driver's dream car; affordable, fast and most importantly, good looking. I can't think of anything better.
