Your personal smell-scape changes again in your senior years and it’s not because you’ve adopted a new cologne or perfume. We’re talking about the “old person smell”, which you might have caught whiffs of in the just-vacated MRT seat, lift, taxi interior or if you live with elderly parents or grandparents: An amalgamation of Axe brand oil, moth balls and an unmistakable greasy, grassy odour. The smell is so distinct that the Japanese even has a term for it: Kareishu, which means the smell of gaining years. WHAT CREATES BODY ODOUR IN THE FIRST PLACE? Your personal brand of odour comes down to the sweat and substances that your body produces, said Associate Professor Lim Tit Meng, Science Centre Board’s chief executive. Generally, you have two kinds of sweat glands: Apocrine sweat glands (in hair-bearing areas such as the armpits and genital area) and eccrine sweat glands (everywhere on the body, including the palms and soles). “Apocrine sweat tends to contain more lipids and proteins, while eccrine sweat is mostly composed of water and electrolytes,” he said. “When bacteria break down these substances, the resulting odours can vary. Bacterial action on the lipids and proteins in apocrine sweat leads to the characteristic body odour.” If you're wondering what lipids are, they are an ingredient in sebum, the same pimple-causing stuff you’ve been fighting in your adolescent and adult life. “Sebum primarily comprises lipids, triglycerides, wax esters, squalene and cellular debris. When exposed to air and bacteria, these components can undergo oxidation and breakdown, resulting in a slightly oily and sometimes musty smell,” said Assoc Prof Lim. HOW DOES THE “OLD PERSON SMELL” COME ABOUT? A few things can give rise to this unique odour; one of which is 2-nonenal. A study on subjects between the ages of 26 and 75, noted that this colourless, insoluble, unsaturated aldehyde was detected only in those aged 40 years and older. Incidentally, 2-nonenal is the same compound found in aged beer and buckwheat, and has been described to smell greasy and grassy like fat and cucumber. The smell-inducing 2-nonenal is a by-product of omega-7 monounsaturated fatty acid after oxidation, said dermatologist Dr Eileen Tan from Eileen Tan Skin Clinic & Associates, Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. "Age-related body odour likely has nothing to do with personal hygiene," said Dr Tan. According to the study, omega-7 monounsaturated fatty acid’s level in skin-surface lipids is found to increase up to six times with age. However, the cause of the increase is not clear. Another factor is sweating less. If there’s one good thing that comes out of getting older, it’s that you’ll sweat less, according to a 2021 study published in Skin Research And Technology by the International University of Health and Welfare in Narita, Japan. This could be caused by the age-related loss of collagen, which means your skin isn’t able to prop itself up as well as before. As a result, the sweat glands get compressed against the skin’s surface, making it harder for sweat to come out. (On a side note, this is also why seniors tend to suffer from heat exhaustion as they don’t sweat as much as younger people to regulate their bodies’ temperature.) Less sweat means less bacterial action, which then affects your body's odour. Furthermore, sebum production may also “decrease or change in composition, contributing to an altered scent”, said Assoc Prof Lim. These bodily changes, combined with diet, health conditions, medications and genetics, contribute to the unique “old person smell” characterised by “a more musty or stale scent”, he said. “The distinct scent typically becomes noticeable in later adulthood, around 60 years old or older” and can be set off and intensified by those aforementioned factors, said Assoc Prof Lim. WHAT’S THE EVOLUTIONARY PURPOSE OF THE "OLD PERSON SMELL"? Much like how we try to guess someone’s age by studying their appearance for physical attributes such as wrinkles and grey hair, odour could be another thing we unconsciously sniff out. In a study by Professor Johan Lundstrom, a brain science and cognitive psychologist from Monell Chemical Senses Center, volunteers were able to pick out the middle-agers based on smell alone. “It might be a way to distinguish the sick from the healthy – not overt sickness but underlying cell decay," said Prof Lundstrom. "The older we get, the more natural decay we have. But no one really knows why animals or people have this ability." Assoc Prof Lim agreed that the old person smell is evolution’s way to signal ageing and health. “Some theories suggest it could play a role in signalling social behaviours potentially linked to age-related immune changes.” CAN WE MINIMISE IT? Ageism may play a role in discriminating against the old people smell. In fact, the first study highlighted in this article found that people generally didn’t mind the odour and even found it less unpleasant and less intense than younger individuals and middle-agers – until they were told that the odour came from older people. Incidentally, the test subjects found that middle-aged men smelled the worst. If you are bothered by the smell, “maintaining a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and staying hydrated may help reduce the intensity of the old person smell”, said Assoc Prof Lim. “Additionally, using skincare products that promote skin health and moisture retention can be beneficial.” "Any scented products will help to mask the smell", said Dr Tan. SINGAPORE: A man was fined S$6 million (US$4.4 million) last Friday (Jan 19) for evading duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) on 1,828 motor cars imported into Singapore. As he failed to pay the fine, Low Han Siang, the sole proprietor of car importer M’ Exclusive, will serve a jail term of 60 months in default. He was also sentenced to an additional nine months' jail for underpaying the Additional Registration Fee (ARF) during the registration of the vehicles. The ARF is a tax imposed when a vehicle is registered, calculated based on a percentage of the Open Market Value of the vehicle. Low, 46, had pleaded guilty to two charges under the Customs Act for evading over S$1.8 million in taxes and duties incurred from importing 1,141 motor vehicles, including brands like Mercedes, Porsche and Tesla, into Singapore between 2017 and 2021. The Singaporean also pleaded guilty to two amalgamated charges of giving incorrect information under the Road Traffic Act. Another two charges of fradulent evasion of GST, six charges of fradulent evasion of duty and GST, five charges of causing an incorrect declaration to be made and four amalgamated charges for giving incorrect information were taken into considering during sentencing. HOW LOW WAS CAUGHT An investigation into M’Exclusive was launched after the car importer was suspected of under-declaring the values of motor vehicles for assessment of duty and GST payable, Singapore Customs said in a press release on Monday. Investigations found that from April 2017 to June 2021, Low created false invoices or asked his suppliers to issue multiple invoices with partial values to conceal the actual values of the imported cars. These invoices were then submitted to Singapore Customs for assessment of duty and GST payable. The suppression of the values of the 1,828 motor cars imported into Singapore between April 2017 and June 2021 resulted in the short payment of duty and GST amounting to about S$3,263,280. It was also discovered that Low had instructed his employee, Lee Pak How, to falsify invoices with suppressed values determined by Low. Lee, a 33-year-old Singapore permanent resident, was fined S$10,000 on Jan 13 after pleading guilty to one charge of falsification of documents. DECLARED VALUES OF IMPORTED MOTOR CARS Singapore Customs said it “closely monitors" the declared values of motor cars imported into Singapore and "will not hesitate to take enforcement actions on errant traders”. The agency added it maintains a "robust commitment" to combat fraudulent evasion of duty and GST, and will take the necessary actions against individuals and entities engaging in such illicit activities. Singapore Customs noted that in January, five individuals involving three separate cases were charged for fraudulent evasion of duty and GST by suppressing the declared values of imported motor cars, making incorrect declaration or causing incorrect declaration to be made on the values of motor vehicles, and falsification of documents. Court proceedings are ongoing for these cases. “Any person who is concerned in fraudulent evasion of any duty or GST on imported goods shall be liable on conviction to a fine of up to 20 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and/or jailed for up to two years,” Singapore Customs said. Any person who is concerned in fraudulent evasion of any duty or GST on imported goods can face a maximum fine of up to 20 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and jailed for up to two years. Any person who gives incorrect information in relation to any matter affecting the amount of tax chargeable shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding S$10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months. "The court shall also order the offender to pay up the ARF which has been undercharged to the LTA," Singapore Customs said.

The police were alerted to the accident around 5.30 pm, and the two ambulances were dispatched to take 2 people to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The victim was unconscious, and died in hospital, whilst the 31 year old officer was conscious on the way. These are the only pictures available of the scene, and no information as to what led to the accident. Police arrested the 35-year-old man on Tuesday (Dec 15) and he will be given the capital charge in court on Thursday afternoon. The man is suspected of causing the death of Ms Felicia Teo Wei Ling with an accomplice who was Ms Teo's friend. The suspected accomplice is currently not in Singapore and police are trying to locate him, the authorities said in a statement on Thursday. Ms Teo, who would have been 32 this year, was reported missing on Jul 3, 2007 by her mother. She could not be found despite extensive investigations at the time, but the police said that she was last seen at the suspected accomplice's home in Marine Terrace. Police interviewed both men, as they were believed to have last seen Ms Teo in the flat. However, the two men maintained that Ms Teo had left the flat in the wee hours of Jun 30, 2007, of her own accord. Nothing incriminating was found after a search of the unit and a check on closed-circuit television footage in the area. As there were no facts at the time to link the two men to Ms Teo’s disappearance, it was classified as a missing persons case and a police gazette was issued to find her. The police explained in their statement that unsolved missing person reports are regularly reviewed for further leads. The reviews uncovered no new leads until the case was referred to the Criminal Investigation Department after the latest review in July this year as part of police processes for long-standing unsolved missing person cases. Fresh leads were found when investigators traced the belongings believed to be in Ms Teo’s possession when she was reported missing. Police linked one of her belongings to the 35-year-old suspect and said they are continuing their search for Ms Teo’s remains. Preliminary investigations revealed that she had died before the report was lodged in early July 2007, and that the two men had allegedly disposed of her body. Goh Suet Hong, 39, and Neo Wei Meng, 40, who are friends, each face one charge of molesting the 32-year-old male Grab driver on 12 November 2018 between 1.18am and 3.03am, while they were on the way to their respective homes. Goh, who is a Malaysian and Singapore permanent resident, and works as a hairdresser here, is accused of touching the alleged victim’s thigh, kissing his left cheek and left side of the lip, and rubbing the alleged victim’s groin over his pants while the car was proceeding along the Central Expressway. Neo, a Singaporean freelance interior designer, is said to have touched the alleged victim’s nipples under his shirt and rubbed his groin directly with his hand, while the car was travelling along the Central Expressway. The victim cannot be named due to a court gag order to protect his identity. Both accused men are represented by lawyer Kalaithasan Karuppaya. Alleged victim went to the police According to court documents, both men had gone to meet a third friend for drinks at a bar along Neil Road at about 10pm on 11 November 2018. After a night of drinking, Neo made a Grab booking with two drop-off locations. The first location was his home, while the second was Goh’s residence. The two intended to pay by cash. On 12 November 2018, the alleged victim, who was assigned by the Grab system for the booking, picked up both men along Neil Road. The two men sat on the rear passenger seats. After Neo was dropped off, Goh moved to the front passenger seat next to the alleged victim. Upon reaching the second destination, Goh instructed the driver to enter a multi-storey carpark. Goh then alighted and asked the driver to wait for him while he relieved himself. Instead, the alleged victim drove away. At about 3.03am, the driver then lodged a police report about being molested. He handed over Goh’s belongings, which had been left in his car, to the police. These consist of a bag, an iPhone, Goh’s NRIC, and his Malaysian driving license, among other valuables. Goh and Neo were arrested on 14 November 2018. A police officer who recorded Goh's statement testified on Monday that he had sent a screening request through to Grab to identify the two accused men through their particulars before calling them down to have their statements taken. He also interviewed and recorded Goh's statement with the help of a colleague, who assisted with the Mandarin interpretation of the statement. The police officer who helped with the statement also testified on Monday morning. The trial continues on Monday afternoon with the victim testifying in-camera. If convicted of molest, each man can be jailed for up to two years, or fined, or caned, or any combination of the punishments.

How can one stop motorists from making too much noise with their engines? Someone in Malaysia reckoned that building speed humps outside his place will work. As seen on an article by Mothership.sg, Nor Muhamad Roslam Harun, who lives in Besut, Malaysia said that the exhaust noises caused by the vehicles disturbed his sleep. So the 40-year-old, who was "depressed" due to this, built 11 speed bumps to slow down vehicles travelling past his house. The bumps which stretched across a 40m stretch of road cost him RM1,080 (S$354.83) and it was from part of the i-Sinar Employees Provident Fund. For those who aren't in the know, the i-Sinar fund are for workers who are self-employed and had their business suffered due to COVID-19. Soon, the humps pissed motorists off and he had to remove them after videos of people using the road went viral. As explained by Roslam, he originally wanted to build lower speed bumps. However, the asphalt hardened too fast, resulting in higher and bigger speed bumps. He has since apologised hired the pros to level all the speed bumps, including the additional two that were on the road originally after the police advised him.

SINGAPORE - The police are appealing for information on a man who robbed $3,000 from a SingPost branch at Potong Pasir Community Club on Thursday afternoon (Feb 8). There was no weapon involved and no one was injured. The police said in a statement on Thursday that they received a report of the robbery at about 1.30pm. The male suspect had walked into the branch wearing a white surgical mask and allegedly demanded the female staff to hand over all the money, the statement said. "The female staff immediately ran into a room for safety. The male suspect then climbed over the counter and made off with about $3,000 in cash that was placed in the drawers." The male suspect was wearing a black cap, a black sweater, blue jeans and black shoes, and was also carrying a black sling bag. He was last seen running in the direction of Upper Serangoon Road, along Potong Pasir Avenue 1. Police investigations are ongoing. Esplanade to take down Vincent Leow artwork after kerfuffle Singapore — The Esplanade will be removing a sketch showing the back of a naked man on top of a chicken from its exhibition walls, after the artwork sparked an online furore. In a statement by Esplanade’s chief executive officer-designate Yvonne Tham on Wednesday (June 6), the performing arts centre said it came to this decision following a discussion with Mr Vincent Leow, the artist featured in the exhibition BLANK at Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. "We have agreed to not continue displaying the drawing, given that the public space at Esplanade’s Community Wall does not allow opportunity for an advisory and is visited by a wide range of visitors, including families,” she said. “We appreciate Vincent’s understanding of the situation, which arose solely from Esplanade’s error of judgement in exercising our responsibility to both artist and audience for presenting work in the appropriate space and context,” Ms Tham added. The 1989 artwork is part of a April 13 to July 8 exhibition curated by the Esplanade showcasing Mr Leow’s sketchbooks and loose drawings from his 30-year career as an artist. Facebook Group Singaporeans Defending Marriage and Family accused the Esplanade in a Tuesday post of “promoting bestiality” by featuring the work in a public space. The group noted that the exhibition, which spans the school holidays, is located near a children’s art space and play area. 'Pakadua Vivah' (forced marriage) is a practice specific to Bihar and surrounding areas, and is mainly carried out by poor families who cannot afford a dowry - still a widespread expectation in India. A video circulated on social media shows the engineer being manhandled and forced to dress for the wedding as he pleads for freedom. "We are only performing your wedding, not hanging you," one man is heard to shout as Mr Kumar begs to be released. Another video shows Mr Kumar sitting beside his bride crying while a woman, apparently an in-law, tries to console him. Lalan Mohan Prasad, a local officer, told AFP police had contacted Mr Kumar and offered their help but he had not formally complained. Local media quoted the engineer as saying one of the bride's relatives had pointed a pistol at him after they met at a mutual friend's wedding and ordered him to marry her. Since the incident, he has reportedly escaped and returned to his home in neighbouring Jharkhand state. SMRT has confirmed an order of 570 new buses, which includes 332 MAN 12-metre buses, 40 MAN articulated buses, and a total of 201 Alexander Dennis Enviro 500 double deckers. This the new livery of SMRT ADL double deckers to be launched soon As part of the initiative to increase bus capacity on longer routes and bring greater comfort to the commuter’s bus journey experience, SMRT has confirmed the delivery of over 570 buses. Orders are confirmed for 332 MAN 12-metre buses, 40 MAN articulated buses, and for the first time, a total of 201 ADL Double Deckers. This is the largest fleet renewal and growth initiative by SMRT to date, and re-affirms the company’s commitment to offering commuters the highest standards in safety, reliability, care and comfort. A first batch of about 30 buses will be delivered to SMRT’s bus depots in June 2014. The vehicles will undergo further tests including functional, systems and road tests before joining SMRT’s existing fleet of over 1,200 buses to serve commuters from July 2014. SMRT Buses will be introducing the rest of the fleet progressively till end 2016. The addition of the ADL Double Deckers in particular will help ease crowdedness during peak hours, particularly on longer routes with high passenger loads. Together with other bus orders, these new vehicles will replace older bus models, and address the need for more bus trips and better bus service levels. Mr. Benny Lim, Senior Vice President for SMRT Roads said, “We are very excited with this major fleet expansion and renewal initiative. 57-year-old man was charged yesterday with committing a slew of sexual offences and indecent acts on a 13-year-old girl over two years. Roger Yue Jr is accused of 48 charges in total. The alleged offences occurred all over Singapore - from Pasir Ris beach to Jurong West - between October 2008 and July 2010. Some time between October and December 2008, he allegedly made the girl, who was then under 16, perform an indecent act at Lakeside MRT station. He allegedly committed multiple indecent acts on other occasions . Yue is said to have raped the girl twice in a Tampines flat and once in an abandoned building in Lavender Street in March 2009. He also allegedly tried to rape her twice - once at a "place with many trees" and at a pagoda at Chinese Garden in Jurong. The bulk of the charges are for sexual penetration of a minor. Among the places where the alleged offences occurred were a staircase leading to the back stage of a secondary school, a classroom at a primary school, a swimming pool at Home Team NS Sembawang, a multi-storey carpark stairway in Tampines Central 1, a deserted house in Rochester Park and a lookout tower at Jurong Heritage Trial. Bail of $70,000 was allowed. If convicted of the most serious offence of rape and sexual penetration, he could be jailed for up to 20 years and fined. Yue will appear in court again on Feb 19. Police named the victim as 47-year-old Randy Llanes, saying he had grabbed his speargun and jumped into Honokohau harbor on Friday morning when he spotted a broadbill swordfish near his boat. Llanes speared the fish, but as it struggled to escape the spear’s line got tangled in a mooring anchor. Caught on the anchor, the fish swam back around toward Llanes at a high speed and struck him in the chest with its 3ft bill. Although Llanes was quickly pulled from the water and emergency personnel arrived minutes later, CPR attempts proved unable to revive him, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. Shortly afterward Llanes was pronounced dead at the hospital, where a large crowd of people gathered to pay their condolences. A Hawaii native, Llanes had worked for more than 18 years as captain for a charter fishing business, and had more than 25 years of experience fishing in the archipelago’s waters. “Hawaii is one of those rare places where sea monsters still exist and world records can still be broken,” he wrote on his company’s website. “My greatest pleasure is being able to share the excitement and natural wonder of the Hawaiian offshore fishing experience with others.” He was described by family members as an intimidating but generous man. “He was a tough guy, he was such a tough guy that everyone’s scared of him, the whole harbor’s scared of him,” Kalina Llanes, the man’s sister-in-law, told KITV news. She added that those who knew him well were “not scared of him because he has such a big heart”. Llanes’ friend Dale Leverone told Khon the fiserhman was “just a great local boy. A good attitude, good person, a help-anybody kind of guy. He had a heck of a lot of friends.” Leverone described him as an “accomplished fisherman”, saying “he actually caught a 500-pound marlin yesterday out of his skiff.” State officials also pulled the 6ft, 40lb fish from the water.
