  3. SINGAPORE - A "Mums & Maids" film urging employers to give their domestic workers a day off every week has been criticised by some who felt it portrayed mothers in a bad light. But some said it reflects the sad truth of some parents relying too much on their maids to look after their children. The two minute-long video features interviews with mothers, children and their maids. Through a series of questions and answers, it shows that domestic workers understand their employers' children better than their employers. In the video, a mother said her daughter "wants to be a teacher", while the maid answered: "I think she wants to be a princess." The girl replied: "Princess." Another mother was asked about her son's best friend in school. She answered: "Very difficult to say, not too sure." Her maid said: "Joseph." The boy's reply? TWC2 president Noorashikin Abdul Rahman said: "The film is provocative. Provocation sometimes helps to generate a buzz on this issue that domestic workers should have a weekly day off." But some questioned if it was an appropriate way to get the message across. A netizen, who goes by the name "Lydia Shah", wrote in a comment on the video's Youtube page: "Hmm shaming mothers not the way to go. I don't see how not knowing your children well = give maids a day off. Kind of a roundabout way to get to a point." Another netizen, known as "Vj Veerasamy", commented: "The decision for a day off for domestic workers does not only fall on the responsibility of the mother but the fathers too." Netizen "Patrick Chng" added: "You don't give a day off to a domestic worker because you should spend more time with your child. All workers/employees must be given a minimum of a day off a week because everybody needs time for rest and leisure." But some said the video was well made. Netizen "Hong Kong Blog" wrote: "Very touching well made video." Some also felt it reflects what is happening in some families. Netizen "Yuet Shan POON" said this also applies to Hong Kong, where many busy parents tend to focus only on the academic results of their children. "How many moms can get all the correct answers?" she wrote. Mr Eugene Cheong, chief creative officer of Ogilvy & Mather Asia Pacific, was quoted by Marketing Magazine as saying that the film is deliberately confronting because it has to be effective and must actually change behaviour. He said: "We focused the creative strategy on tapping into modern parents' fear of missing out. By showing how parents are losing out on their relationship with their children by always requiring their domestic worker to be around, we reposition their day off as an opportunity to enhance family bonding."   4. I know one my off days, I don't go back to office to enjoy air con, or use the free internet or photo printer. How about maids off days? Can they stay at home? I mean if they stay at home, do they have to hide in their room? Or can they walk around, watch TV with kids, eat their cookies, surf on their laptop, etc. Just dirty the house and no need to clean up until the next day? How will one feel when the family is cleaning and arranging the house, while the maid is sitting around and watching the owner clean their own house for once. So if the off days are implemented, must the maid be out of the house? Also if the compulsory Sunday off, does it mean 00:00am till 23:59pm, exactly 24hours or what? Anyone with the answer?

Firstly, the employer or an adult is physically present to supervise the maid. And, secondly, window grilles must be installed and locked at all times during the cleaning process. Gd la, finally something in place to protect our domestic workers.. dun really see the need to clean the exterior of windows till sparkling clean.. but then, how to clean windown when grills are locked ah?

It emphasises that anyone who cleans the exterior of their windows at home should follow similar safety requirements. The ministry explained that many foreign domestic workers do not come from high-rise environments and may not be used to Singapore's urban living environment. They are therefore likely to be unaware of the risks in a high-rise domestic setting. Apart from window cleaning, employers should take necessary steps to eliminate the risks involved in other tasks by following the Dos and Don'ts covered in MOM's guidebooks and pamphlets. If foreign domestic workers are required to hang laundry outside the window using bamboo poles, employers should ensure that they do not stand on an elevated platform or tip-toe while handling the poles, and do not overload the pole with too many clothes. MOM said it will be sending a circular to all existing foreign maid employers to inform them of the tightened safety requirements. The ministry will also be updating its training materials for first-time maids and their employers. MOM warns that failure to comply with these tightened requirements constitutes a breach of the Employment of Foreign Manpower (Work Passes) Regulations. Employers who fail to comply may be prosecuted and permanently barred from hiring a foreign domestic worker. MOM said it's deeply concerned with the recent spate of fatalities involving foreign domestic workers. Since January this year, there have been nine work-related fall from heights fatalities, compared to four cases for the whole of 2011 and eight in 2010. The ministry's investigations show that five of the nine fatalities were related to foreign donestic workers cleaning windows in an unsafe manner. Two arose from hanging laundry, while the causes of the last two are pending further investigation. The ministry said this tragic and unnecessary loss of lives could have been prevented if foreign domestic workers and their employers took safe work practices seriously.   11. Or your friends' experience? I have relatives who changed maid at least once a year and they complaint about how bad their maids were... I also have friends who used the same maid for more than 7, or even 12 years (yes, 12!) and both sides became friends..... I have used four maids in the past 28 years.... the 5th one just came few days ago.

  13. this was a bloody dumb idea in the first place. why target the domestic helpers when they were already letting in any tom, dick and harry in other areas without need for english proficiency. better yet, send all the new immigrants and FTs/FWs for SIP training instead of asking singaporeans to adjust to them. ----- Government scraps English entry test for maids New scheme to help them cope with living working here Published on Dec 5, 2011 By Shuli Sudderuddin The English entry test which has been the bugbear of first-time maids since 2005 will be scrapped. Maids and the agencies that bring them in have said that the test discourages maids from wanting to work here, causes distress to those who fail and can take up valuable training time. Instead, maids will go through a mandatory programme which will help them cope better with living and working here. Background story What's new The mandatory English entry test will be replaced with a mandatory Settling-In Programme designed to ease first-time foreign domestic workers into living and working here. A standard biodata template will be introduced for employment agencies to use, to improve the information on incoming maids such as their employment history, skill sets and how this information has been verified. This will facilitate better matching with employers here. The Association of Employment Agencies and CaseTrust will design this biodata template with the Manpower Ministry. A voluntary 'trust mark' will be awarded to better employment agencies in the market. This will promote best practices in the industry. NOT A GOOD GAUGE 'While the entry test was introduced with good intentions, we have heard from many of you that it is not a meaningful measure of quality.'   14. Hi bros, any of you guys brought your maid across the border before? and is anyone familar with passport extension? Passport renewal (aka new passport) will take me 6-8 weeks when an extension can be done within a week. (trip is about 1 month time from now) But all these info currently is hearsay, any bros can confirm?

    the traditional source of maids are from philippines and indonesia. perhaps the govt can open up to the ideas of maids from china. maybe they can set the china maid levy a bit higher.
  17. I had a conversation with one of my acquaintance recently and he was complaining to me that his 2nd Indon maid was beginning to lax and was neglecting her tasks. She was caught watching Malay aired TV shows in the afternoons when he and his wife are both working. His first Filo maid gave trouble simply becos she has a mobile and he has forbade his 2nd maid to own one. My advice to him is to be strict to such ppl like maids as they are not able appreciate the kindness from their employers and simple pleasures like the privilege of watching TV can be abused. I for one, forbade my maid from even touching the TV ( except to clean their surfaces) let alone to watch shows from it....and of course.....NO MOBILE! He was shocked that I was too strict. I feel that they can watch shows if there is someone to monitor them at home with a time limit or when the entire family watches them and she has finished her work and joins them but not when she is left alone or simply feels that she can turn on the TV herself! Are my views too strict or are my views similiar with many others here with have maids too?
  18. Hi all, I extended my indo maid's COE last year but now she claims her mother is ill and her family wants her back (standard reason). Told her that I experienced this story too many a times. And everytime when this happens, when they return back home, within 1 month, their savings will be gone and they'll call to ask me to let them come back to work again without having to go thru the agents again. I ever experienced my another ex maid writing a letter to my current maid asking her to cherish the work here and don't be like her, going to HK got more salary but regretted. I was puzzled. Maids in HK very jialat meh? Expectation issues? Anyway, now I'm searching for a new maid and possibly considering a vietnamese / burmese maid. Has anyone used them before or knows where to get them? I assume they more expensive than Indo maids? I just realised there's vietnamese maids when my relatives told me about it during CNY gathering, saying they are quite ok? But when I checked with my previous maid agencies, none of them do vietnamese / burmese. I only know near my office, there's a place for vietnamese brides.....not maids. Appreciate any contacts / advise from anyone. Thanks.

  21. is there any alternatives instead of employing a maid? as we know, some of them comes with unwanted baggage be it socially or otherwise. and funny thing, not much protection are given to employers on this wayward maids but there are tonnes of law that protects them.... very weird. eg, if they are pregnant, run away....employers are to blame?? what part are we involved in getting them pregnant or run away? by giving them off days that are required by law? whose law was that in the first place? sigh.... in dilemma now.

I just saw 2 maids washing thier owners cars at the basement carpark...but what shocked me was I only see bottles of JIF, MAMA LEMON, WINDEX WINDOW CLEANER, what looked like a 3M sponge with the green scrub, ..... none of the usual car washing shampoo or wax...but all household cleaner stuff.... do u guys let your maids wash your car???
