Nevertheless, I created this thread because it's pretty amazing we're 1 year plus into the pandemic and there are businesses/individuals that still refuses to evolve. They continue to think the world will return to normal and rely on government aid (tax payers money) or cheap labor (maximize margin) to drive their organizations (plus complain a lot). Do you think they are worth saving? -
Last week, my car skidded on the way up the ramp in a carpark. The floor was wet after the rain. I braked immediately, after which was not able to get the car to go further. The steering feels extremely loose and could feel that it's not gripping at all. After several tries, the engine stalled and after I restart, the car finally got moving. After that, I was extremely careful whenever I go up the carpark. Today, while travelling on ECP which was still wet after the rain last night, I could feel that the same thing is going to happen, which cause me to slow down alot. I sensed a slight pull and the car was like going to lose control and go towards the side. It's as if there's no friction between the tyres and the road. Could anyone suggest what could be wrong, as I'm contemplating whether to go back to the agent or to have it check by my usual mechanic, who's more experience. Thank you.

heard this news on the radio, so decided to search for the full story online... but only Straits Times and Channelnewsasia covered it the local tour guides, although many of them are free lancing, are badly treated by Singapore Tourism Board many foreigners, on S-passes, come here to moonlight as tour guides, charging cheaper fees and forcing our own local ones out of jobs despite years of complains, the situation does not improve the bogus foreign tour guides have no qualifications (the local ones need to go through 9 months of trainings) and they have limited knowledge of our country (sometimes providing wrong information to the tourists, eg saying we are the descendants of Merlion according to legends) of cos, the tour agencies play a part as they are usually the ones hiring the tour guides personally after listening to their plights, i feel it's a sad thing because - tour guides generally dun earn alot, and even so, they are being forced out of jobs by the bogus FTs - the authority is sleeping and not protecting the interests of the local tour guides - most importantly, tour guides are like unofficial ambassadors responsible in introducing our country, history and culture to the tourists... how can this role be taken by foreigners with limited knowledge? haiz...

Two encounters I had with doctors left me disgusted. Some years ago, I took my son to a specialist for a procedure. After I paid the bill, the specialist chided me for not telling him that my son was covered by my company's medical insurance scheme. His exact words: 'Had I known that you were covered by insurance, I would have charged you twice the amount.' Recently, I consulted a specialist on a medical condition. I paid for the consultation, blood test, medication and a series of three treatments, which were to follow. At one of the treatments, the specialist happened to enter the treatment room while I was being attended to by a nurse. We engaged in some small talk, which inevitably drifted to a conversation on my condition. At the end of the treatment, I was billed $96.30, including goods and services tax, for the 'consultation'. On querying the nurse, I was told that as long as I spoke with the specialist, a consultation charge would be incurred. I found this baffling as my visit to the clinic was for treatment, and I did not have an appointment with the specialist. Nevertheless, I paid. Speaking to British newspaper The Financial Times, British-based Brazilian lawyer Renata Sa, who is representing 400 Singapore investors as well as other investors from around the world in two class actions, said: This should be a wake-up call. It is known that action is being taken against the Brazil arm of the EcoHouse operations, as well as real estate agencies and financial advisors in the United Kingdom who were responsible for handling an Escrow account. EcoHouse sold more than 1,000 individual investments in Singapore and Southeast Asia during 2012 and 2013. The British company was the subject of a creditors voluntary liquidation last month, at which PricewaterhouseCoopers was nominated as the liquidating company. The Brazil company is not, as far is known, in liquidation although media reports suggest progress is at a standstill following alleged tax irregularities and a police raid last year. Many Singapore and Asia investors have sales and purchase agreements with the Brazilian company, and not with the U.K. company which is facing liquidation this month. Flamboyant company founder, Anthony Armstrong-Emery, is reported to be in the Middle East attempting to raise additional funds, but time to save the EcoHouse empire, and with it millions of dollars and investment, appears to be fading fast. According to the British newspaper, EcoHouse has blamed the unexpected intervention of the Brazilian Police on malicious, inaccurate and fanciful allegations by competitors and former landowners. Funds worth more than S$65 million said to be being investigated. British Police are also taking an interest, with an investigation reportedly taking place by the Fraud and Linked Crime Online Team of the Metropolitan Police. It estimated some 200 complaints have been made from the U.K. with a value of some totally S$14 million. EcoHouse was the best-selling single overseas property investment in Singapore during 2012, and with its offices at Suntec Tower, which have since closed, it attracted many small-time and first-time overseas property investors in Southeast Asia with promises of 20 percent returns in 12-months on its S$46,000 social housing property investments. Many investors purchased multiple units while other clubbed together with family and friends to buy a single property. PropertyGurus attempts for comment from the company at all its known contact points have so farbeen unsuccessful.

...... nothing last forever theory? http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/pap-could-lose-control-power-over-next-15-25-years SINGAPORE — The People’s Action Party (PAP) could lose the dominance it currently enjoys in Parliament in 15 years, said prominent businessman Ho Kwon Ping yesterday, adding that the party could completely lose power a decade after that if the history of dominant political parties around the world is anything to go by. “This is actually not a radical conclusion — almost everyone I informally surveyed broadly agreed with it, but (differed) only in their estimation as to how many years it would take before the PAP would lose an election and how many terms it would stay out of power before bouncing back,” Mr Ho added. Mr Ho, who is executive chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings and an S R Nathan fellow, raised the scenarios at an Institute of Policy Studies (IPS)-Nathan lecture, where he spoke about politics and governance to an audience comprising about 300 civil servants, students, academics and members of the private sector. In theory, freak election results, splits in the PAP or a massive loss in legitimacy due to corruption are possible factors that can cause the PAP to lose power, said Mr Ho. Other factors that could delay or speed up the process include the level of support from elderly voters, “internal rigidity and intrigues” in the PAP cadre system and possible loss of economic competitiveness. Noting that ruling parties in democracies have “generally floundered” after 50 to 75 years, Mr Ho nonetheless said the PAP is “very likely” to overtake the record of Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party, which lasted 71 years. This is because the PAP has not exhibited signs of moral exhaustion and an onset of decay as seen in other parties by their middle age, he said. There is also no evidence to show that corruption has increased in Singapore’s public life, despite a few scandals involving mid-level bureaucrats, said Mr Ho, arguing that Singapore remains exemplary among its neighbours and counterparts in developed countries for its low level of corruption. Still, the PAP will face considerable challenges after the “very popular” Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong reaches his 80s, he said. Mr Ho said the Civil Service must develop its own sense of self, ethos and values as elections become more volatile. This is not to distance itself from the ruling party, he added, but to develop a culture and identity that is robust and resilient.

1. Just to share as it just happened to my brother this evening. 2. 1st thing 1st, go to nearest police station to make a police report. Make sure you have a copy of the report with you. 3. With the police report, you can try your luck at the Malaysia custom. Based on my understanding with Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they may or may not let you pass based on historical records. My brother was really lucky as the Custom actually let him pass. Once you reach the Singapore Custom, you are deemed safe and sound. 4. However, if you are being turned away by the Malaysia custom, remember that they have no right to detain you, you can de-tour and call your family members to help to go to the SG immigration dept to get you a DOI. With the DOI, your family member can meet up with you in JB and pass you the DOI. With the DOI, which is equate to a temporary passport, the Malaysia custom will let you pass. 5. If you are in KL (only place that has SG high-com in MY), you can get a DOI there too. Regards,

New height of COE for Cat A may soon be announced, new cars are heard fully booked, agents are taking in orders to secure them with preparation to bid higher price of COE.....any fools know about this. Is this not really a bad news for those who intend to get a pre-owned car to bridge this period of craziness, think again. The 2nd car dealers are too prompt to increase prices by quite a bit in anticipation. I noticed several offers (with much cheaper COEs) asking for ridiculous prices with astronomical depreciation rate (US$12-15K per annum) by dealers, some owners alike.... For a new car, if scrap at the end of 10th year, the depreciation of a VW golf is 15K per annum (8/yr for COE, 5K for car, 2K for interest). For a pre-owned car, the depreciation of COE is much lower, but the car is much higher, and the overall depreciation works to be almost the same amount you pay for a new car. Take for instance, a 2010 Golf 1.4 was $106k then, the dealers are selling them today at the same price or more. But, the cost of COE was as low as $34k, so you are paying much more for the depreciation of the old car. If everyone of us just buy pre-owned car blindly without working out our sum, COE will continue to rise, it is a viscous cycle. If we lose patient, we shall pay the price, a hefty price indeed. The track, which is said to have cost $10 million, was built by car enthusiast and former Coca-Cola Amatil boss Dean Wills after he lost his licence for speeding on the old Pacific Highway in 1996. Mr Wills wanted to enjoy his growing fleet of exotic cars - which included the only McLaren racing car ever sold privately - without having to worry about oncoming traffic. His son Mark said the track was motivated by a lack of opportunity for "spirited" driving in a safe environment. "In the early days it was possible to wake up early on Sunday morning and go driving," he said. "It was becoming increasingly less safe so we really needed somewhere we could go where we wouldn't get into life-threatening situations. Love it!

The shortage of parking spaces in the city could get even worse with Capitaland considering redeveloping the Golden Shoe Carpark now that its revamp of the former Market Street Carpark is under way. The 10-storey Golden Shoe, in Market Street, a stone's throw from Raffles Place MRT Station, contains 1,053 parking spaces with retail and food outlets on the first three levels. CapitaLand group president and chief executive Liew Mun Leong said it was always the company's intention to redevelop both carparks. 'It's a matter of timing... In 1996, when I was already (chief executive), we already had plans for both carparks. A FIRM is at the centre of a police investigation after a customer claimed to have lost $300,000 which was invested in gold bars. Bao Jing Trading is believed to be having cashflow problems, and there are fears that about 120 investors could lose up to $40 million. At least two more police reports have been made against the company, based in the Rochor Centre, The Straits Times understands. Teo Eu Gene was seated in a car when his father and Mrs Juliet Tan Whye Peck, 47, were arguing over a parking lot at the Chinese Swimming Club on August 2. When Mrs Tan was walking back to her car, Teo went after her and kicked her in the back. After she fell, he punched her as she lay on the ground. The judge said road rage offences are viewed seriously by the courts and offenders would usually be given custodial sentences. Teo begins his sentence on September 28. - CNA/al

He warned that those who failed to comply with the new ruling could also be issued compounded fines or be blacklisted. 'If the businesses don't fly the flags on both these days, they will be considered to have violated the new condition for their licences,' he told reporters after handing over the national flag to to Ipoh City Council's department heads here on Monday. Mr Roshidi said the ruling was part of the council's efforts to inculcate patriotism among city folk, particularly among the business community. He admitted that despite the launch of the Merdeka month celebrations by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on Aug 1, most premises in the city have yet to raise the national flag. First say want to bring to police station, then suddenly policeman appear near the nightclub . He should have known the nearby police post or number to call, since he is in the bouncer/clubbing business, no need to bring to police station. Also its already 3:45am....two more hours its day time...and by that time she would have sober up...just leave her sitting outside the club would suffice. Bouncer loses car while helping drunk woman He leaves her in car to retrieve wallet in club, then returns to find car gone June 23, 2009 THE woman was dead drunk, so part-time bouncer Sahifizad Yusof thought he would drive her to a police post. GOOD DEED: Mr Sahifizad spotted the woman alone in the club and decided to help her. TNP PICTURE: KUA CHEE SIONG Little did he know the deed would cost him his car. The 28-year-old sales manager said his car was stolen on 14Jun at Clarke Quay after he left the woman in it for a short time. Mr Sahifizad works as a part-time bouncer for different clubs. That night, he was working for a club at Clarke Quay for the first time. Around 3.45am, Mr Sahifizad noticed a woman who looked to be in her 20s alone inside the club. 'She appeared very drunk and I could tell from the way she smelt that she had been drinking a lot,' Mr Sahifizad told The New Paper. 'She then threw up. She also broke a statue that belonged to the club.' With the help of the floor manager, Mr Sahifizad took her outside. But 15 minutes later, the woman staggered back into the club, Mr Sahifizad said. This time, he decided to put her in a taxi. No address, no IC But when he asked her for her address, it appeared that she could not recollect it. He then asked her for her identity card to check for her home address. But the woman said she did not have her wallet with her. He also noticed that she was barefoot. So he decided to drive her to the police post nearby. 'She asked if I could go back to the club to get her wallet,' Mr Sahifizad said. 'I agreed. I told her she would have to wait for me in my car, and she said okay.' He then helped her to the back seat of his yellow Hyundai Getz, which was parked near Hotel Novotel, a two-minute walk from the club. He left the car key in the ignition and the air-conditioning running. After locking the car doors from the outside with a separate remote key, Mr Sahifizad returned to the club. 'I also wanted to get a colleague to come with us in the car in case I get accused of having inappropriate intentions on the woman,' he added. But he could not find the woman's belongings. When he returned to where the car was parked 10 minutes later, he found it missing. The woman was also nowhere to be found. Mr Sahifizad: 'I walked around looking for my car and, after about five minutes, I saw a few police officers and told them what happened. 'They said they sent out a message asking their colleagues to look out for my car. They also took my statement.' A police spokesman confirmed that they received a call on 14Jun at 4.40am about a stolen vehicle at Tan Tye Place near Clarke Quay. Investigations are ongoing. Mr Sahifizad said his handphone, wallet, identity card, CashCards and clothes were in the car. He said his car, which he bought for $56,000, is about five years old. 'I treat the car like my wife,' the bachelor said. 'It has sentimental value. 'I just want my car back.'
