The car owner, Ms. Ye, told a reporter from Shin Min Daily News that on November 16 last year, she and her husband drove a Lexus ES300 to a relative’s house for a party. Her husband parked the car at Springleaf Avenue, near a playground. She said that a thunderstorm occurred at 2.30pm that day. The rain stopped about an hour later and they decided to go back. They found that the door could not opened, and the engine could not be started. The airbag on the left side of the car's rear seat also exploded. Ms. Ye then contacted the car workshop. After the technician arrived to check, it still couldn't start, and the car was eventually towed away. She said that there was no updates on her car for more than two weeks after the incident. Then on December 19 last year, the car manufacturer informed them the damage to the car was caused by act of nature, which involves environmental or external factors beyond the manufacturer's control. Ms. Ye is convinced that the car was damaged by lightning. She said that there were scorch marks on the bottom of a nearby Foxtail Palm tree and some of its leaves were scorched black, which may have been caused by a lightning strike. She said that a car workshop quoted her a repair fee of up to $220,000, and the car insurance she purchased covered accidents caused by natural disasters, and the repair cost was ultimately borne by the insurance company. However, she said that after the incident, no one was willing to repair her car. It was not until the end of January this year that she found someone to repair the car. It has been 7 months since the incident and her car is still undergoing repair. She has no choice but to buy a Toyota to commute. https://www.zaobao.com.sg/news/singapore/story20240603-3776514?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR0Fon5YXe2Io0gXSGsMPoQI19jigWEKjGTkoSyTqcQW8LvFeQZOjbW-iuI_aem_AeCYlceZmlox8ds26oxEI_bFO-rMMtAsIQoHhYWqNWDpY0hmdWd1Bnw1Pc53cif0drLNUKPPP2Tgcq6TravxB3Gm

A tree branch collapses on a very 'suay' BMW 116D after a lightning strike
thatJDMahboy posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
An act of God refers to unavoidable events that are beyond human control. And more often than not, being in an accident is every driver's nightmare, let alone an accident involving the act of God. Watch this 'suay' BMW driver that was involved in such an accident here: WhatsApp Video 2022-08-17 at 9.33.39 AM.mp4 What Happened? The driver of a BMW 116D was driving under bad weather conditions when suddenly lightning struck a tree that he drove past. The lightning strike caused one of the tree branches to collapse onto the German hatchback, resulting in it receiving extensive damage to its windshield, bonnet and side. Thankfully, the BMW driver managed to walk away harm-free from this incident. Insurance cannot claim right? This has to be the first question that comes to mind after watching this video. Fortunately, the BMW driver managed to claim his insurance under "Own Damage (OD)". This means that he only has to pay the OD excess, and his insurance provider will cover the rest of the cost involved. But needless to say, his premium is going to shoot up after this claim. Netizens' Comments Think optimistically🙏✨ Looks like his car number is gonna be sold out for 17th August's draw🤭 The golden question! ========= Be the first to get the latest road/ COE news, and get first dibs on exclusive promos and giveaways in our Telegram SGCM Community. Voiced acted by Owen Wilson, Lightning McQueen is easily recognisable by all ages thanks to Pixar Animation Studios successful series, Cars. Into the third installment of the animation series, most of us probably have no idea what car it is actually based on. Is it a Corvette?Or maybe a Charger? Or something else? Let Mike Fernie of Drivetribe and ex-Top Gear host James May break down the cars that make up Lightning McQueen for you in the video below.

CNA latest : Straight fight in Hougang by-election Posted: 16 May 2012 1201 hrs SINGAPORE: The Hougang by-election on May 26 is set to be a straight fight between Mr Png Eng Huat of the Workers' Party and Mr Desmond Choo of the People's Action Party after nomination closed at noon on Wednesday. They filed their papers at the Nomination Centre at Serangoon Junior College. Acupuncturist Mr Zeng Guoyuan, who was expected to run as an independent candidate, did not file his nomination papers. Channel NewsAsia understands he could not contest as a candidate due to a case in 2008 when he was fined for using abusive language at public servants. The fourth man, Dr Poh Lee Guan, failed to file his papers when nomination closed at noon on Wednesday. Workers' Party Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang told reporters at the nomination centre that he has not heard from Dr Poh and the party has not made any attempt to contact Dr Poh. He also has not heard anything from Dr Poh about quitting the party. Mr Low said the party has not yet decided on what kind of disciplinary action it will take against Dr Poh, if any. But he said Dr Poh should have made clear his intention to the party, as he is a long-standing member of WP and a former Central Executive Council member. Mr Low said party unity is still strong, adding that all the Aljunied GRC MPs and NCMPs are at the centre to show support for Mr Png. He said there is no "internal strife". On why Dr Poh was not elected to the CEC, Mr Low said he was nominated but he was not elected to the CEC as he could not get enough support. Mr Low said he has confidence in WP supporters. - CNA/al

Just a small side issue away from the main fracas. This is the logo of the PAP. It is an image of a bolt of lightning with a blue circle around it. It is lightning - not thunder. [FYI: Thunder is the sound that comes after a bolt of lightning rapidly heats up the air and causes massive vibrations.] Yet, many people refer to PAP as team Thunder. Why??? If any name - it should be team lightning or lightning bolt.

Six full-time national servicemen (NSF) were hurt when a bolt of lightning hit the hill they were training on in Marsiling last week. The men were participating in a training excercise under a shelter during the time. The NSFs, who were undergoing training to become officers, took shelter under a tree from rain at the time when the exercise was temporarily suspended, according to a Straits Times report. Mostly in their late teens, the cadets were taking part in a platoon field-defence mission which required them to capture the top of the hill and set up chest-deep bunkers there to protect themselves against the

LIGHTNING killed and injured a dozen people in Russia in the past two weeks . Some officials are blaming widespread use of electronic gadgets like handphones for the increase in deaths, reported CNN. On Wednesday, a lightning bolt killed three sunbathers in the town of Neftekamsk, about 1,290km east of Moscow. One victim, Marina Sadykova, 26, was among a few people on a beach along the Kama River when a storm moved in. Witnesses said they saw a sharp, blinding ray of light that raised seven metres of sand. The woman, the mother of a 5-month-old boy, was talking on a handphone when she was killed. According to police, the phone was found melted in her hand. In other parts of Russia, other instances of lightning-related deaths include the case of a 10-year-old boy riding a bike while talking on a handphone and an elderly farmer tending her potato plants. Mr Leonid Tarkov of the weather observation centre Fobos said he believes that the increase in lightning strikes may be linked to the prevalence of portable electronic devices, such as handphones or music players. 'These things are electromagnetic field carriers,' he said. 'That makes them, in essence, conductors. Thunderbolts are frequently attracted to such things, and hits are often connected with a lethal outcome.' The theory that lightning can follow the weak electromagnetic fields of such devices is rejected by virtually all scientists. But there is evidence that a lightning strike is more likely to be fatal for a person carrying any object with metal in it. Mr Tarkov himself pointed out another explanation for the surge in lightning strikes in Russia recently: The country has been hit by an unusually high number of storms. He said Moscow is 139 per cent above normal for rainfall this month, including 51mm of rain from a fierce thunderstorm on Wednesday, which is equal to five buckets of water on each square metre

Workers' Party says Singapore workers disadvantaged Posted: 01 May 2008 0659 hrs SINGAPORE: The Singapore economic model, one in which Singaporeans are dependent on foreigners for their jobs, has eroded the societal standing of the Singapore worker, suggested the Workers' Party (WP) in its May Day message on Wednesday. The WP cited an anecdote from Mr Lim Boon Heng, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, at the recent Singapore Tripartism Forum, of a woman concerned about a "sweet, young beer girl from China" undercutting her wages at the coffee shop. According to The Straits Times, Mr Lim had said the young girl drew more customers, in turn helping the Singaporean to keep her job. "According to Mr Lim's logic, is he conceding the People's Action Party has created an economic model whereby Singaporeans must now be dependent on the foreign workers to retain our jobs?" asked the WP statement, which cited how 60 percent of the 234,900 jobs created last year went to foreigners. The party also questioned if the "rosy picture" of the record job growth had masked some disadvantages. "Could it be that more Singaporeans are holding contractual part-time work positions, whereas foreigners might be benefiting from the full-time positions created?" asked the WP. The job figures required "more detailed analysis to understand the actual employment status" of Singaporeans and their employment terms, such as medical benefits and annual leave. The WP ended its message with a call for more help measures from the government, in the context of rising food prices, "on top of the initiatives (such as the U Stretch food voucher programme) by the National Trades Union Congress". While the party did not suggest food subsidies "across the board", it repeated its call to reduce the Goods and Services Tax to 5 percent and to keep it at that rate for "at least a year". It also suggested the government reduce fuel taxes. - TODAY/so May 1, 2008 S'poreans may lose jobs without foreign workers: PM SINGAPOREANS should look at the contributions of foreign workers objectively - they are not here to steal their jobs, but to help enlarge the economic pie for the country. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, speaking in Mandarin at the May Day Rally on Thursday morning, sought to explain why foreign workers can help strengthen Singapore's overall competitiveness. He noted that some Singaporeans think that foreign workers are the problem because they are under-cutting the wages of locals. As an example, he mentioned recent reports in newspaper about coffee-shops hiring foreign workers, which became a talking point. An older Singaporean woman has lamented to Minister Lim Boon Heng (Prime Minister's Office) that these young, pretty foreigners were taking jobs away from locals. 'Boon Heng replied, half joking, that maybe this was how the drinks stores attracted more customers; with more business, locals will be able to keep their jobs, and so the PRC young lady was indirectly helping the Singaporean woman,' PM Lee told the rally. Some people disagreed with Boon Heng's answer. Mr Lee himself also thinks it may not be a good thing to have more pretty beer ladies who encourage people to drink more. But he said the former labour chief had a serious point. The PM gave three reasons: First, foreign workers are hardworking and willing to work long hours. By hiring them, coffee shops can open late, or even 24 hours, round the clock. Second and more importantly, with the help of foreign workers, airport, seaport, factories, offices, hotels, restaurants and retail outlets can offer better service and business hours: 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, they can run their operations, service their customers, and so strengthen Singapore's overall competitiveness. Third, many SMEs do not make good profits, especially the neighbourhood shops. If they can hire some foreign workers in addition to the locals, they can reduce their business costs; otherwise, they may have to go out of business. Thier Singaporean employees will then lose their jobs. PM Lee said the Government is controlling the inflow of foreign workers, by setting limits on the proportion of foreign workers they can hire and imposing a levy. This gives Singaporean workers the edge in competing for jobs. 'Overall, our policies are creating many job opportunities for Singaporeans,' he added. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2...ry_232960.html

"Keep it simple, pure, and beautiful." The words of GM vice president Bob Lutz when launching the Solstice concept in the US. This was the basic requirement for Vauxhall's stunning new concept car, the VX Lightning. Being launched as a centrepiece to the company's Centenary celebrations, the VX Lightning is a two-seater roadster based on the same technical foundation as the Pontiac concept Solstice, first seen at the 2002 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Vauxhall's roadster concept, however, has been designed for British tastes, at GM's UK Advanced Design Studio in the Midlands. Under the long bonnet of the VX Lightning is a new version of Vauxhall's all aluminium 2.2 ECOTEC engine, reworked with a supercharger to produce a maximum power of 240hp and 305Nm of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox is mated to the new engine, which drives the rear wheels. The chassis incorporates independent suspension, the front end using a simple and reliable strut configuration with a rack and pinion steering. At the rear, the independent suspension is all aluminium for weight saving. Overall, the car manages a near perfect 50:50 weight distribution for the best in handling and agility. Kevin Wale, Vauxhall chairman and managing director says: "The VX Lightning says everything about where Vauxhall is heading. The car represents a return to our early performance roots when Vauxhall was famous as the manufacturer of the first true British sports car - while we continue to be both innovative and bold in exterior and interior design. "We have made great strides recently in terms of our interior packaging through cars like Zafira and Signum. Vauxhall is also about pure driving excitement - just look at the new VX220 Turbo. "Ultimately the VX Lightning, as a classic roadster, represents the best of our past, and our future - a vehicle that is quintessentially British." DesignDesigned in the UK, the VX Lightning is a classically proportioned sports car with a long bonnet and short rear overhang. There are also some subtle echoes of the past, including the rollover hoops sculptured into the rear deck and bodywork which flows down into the cabin. Fitting for a car with the presence of the VX Lightning, it sits on 19inch alloy wheels at the front (fitted with 245/35 Michelin Pilot tyres) while at the rear massive 20 inch alloys are fitted with 255/35 tyres. Inside, deeply sculptured seats are finished in black and red leather, while red leather has also been used to trim the sweeping dashboard. There are currently no plans to build the VX Lightning concept, however Vauxhall will be closely monitoring public reaction to this great new car VX Lightning - technical specifications Body/chassis structure: unique GM platform, based on the Solstice, with front engine and rear-wheel driveBody material: compositeChassis material: all steel, unibody Suspension: 4-wheel independent, strut front, adjustable for rate and travel Powertrain Engine: modified, supercharged ECOTEC L850 2.2L 4-cylinderEngine displacement (cu. in/cc):134/2200Max. horsepower (hp/kW):240/179Max. torque (lb.ft/Nm):225/305 TransmissionGM T56, six-speed manual (5th/6th gears overdrive).
