We've seen the memes and watched the reels about how introverts feel so run down after going out with friends or socialising at an event that they must isolate themselves for the next two days (or is it two weeks?). I'm no psychologist or psychiatrist, but this is supposedly because introverts don't want to be around other people. Anecdotally, they do enjoy spending time with friends, but perhaps not with all of them at once. Since I enjoy the company of my friends, perhaps I am an extrovert. So, hanging out with them should be a piece of cake. Or so I thought. Photo: Vincenzo Landino, Unsplash New realisations Last month, one of my wife's best friends (let's call her K) flew into town for a conference, but before that event, she spent two days at our house. Though I don't know her as well as my better half does, we get along fine. I assumed that since the missus and I would be entertaining her, this would be a walk in the park. We picked up K from the airport on a Saturday afternoon and treated her to lunch in Jewel before heading home so we could get her settled. Later, we went to dinner in Jalan Besar. Since our guest had a long day, we headed back home right after, did a bit more catching up and turned in before midnight. The next day should have been easy. Since we all woke up late, we decided to have an early lunch before going to Gardens by the Bay to explore the 'Impressions of Monet' exhibition. Afterwards, we dropped K off at her hotel. 'Exhaustion' sets in My better half and I exhaled sighs of relief as we drove off. "I'm so tired!" she proclaimed. "I need to lie in bed for two hours!" I replied. And that's exactly what we did when we got back. I don't know if there's a name to this (is this even a defined condition?), but all those reels and memes about the 'social battery running low' could not have felt more real. Was it too much stimulation from the Sunday crowd? Was I just tired from the workweek? A bit of both? Whatever it was, this relatively simple hosting schedule was surprisingly taxing. I felt drained. Having to process all that visual and audio stimulation whilst avoiding bumping into tourists takes a lot of energy. Upon further pondering, I surmised that having to continuously carry a conversation is probably what did us in. Being mentally and emotionally present takes a toll. We didn't just sit around and stare at our phones; we conversed and reminisced. We were engaged. You get worn out when you dedicate so much of yourself. It's probably why a lot of folks today prefer the company of their devices to actual people. You can switch off your phone when you're tired of doomscrolling or when the battery runs out. But when you're in someone's company or keeping someone company, you can't just 'switch off' by standing up and leaving. Well, you could, but it would be incredibly rude. Photo: Shane, Unsplash Managing your 'mana' K is neither the first nor will she be the last houseguest. But now that we've realised how much 'mana' it takes to entertain someone and how long it takes to refill, we will have an even more relaxed plan next time. We can schedule longer periods of just hanging out at home instead of going out. And when we do bring our guest out, we will ensure it is someplace that isn't crowded or difficult to access. Meaningful conversations can only take place when there are fewer distractions around you. In such a setting, everyone is also more comfortable, and energy levels are better managed. I sound cold, talking about how I must consciously manage the time I spend with friends. Well, I'm no longer a teenager with boundless energy, able to survive on two hours' sleep and continue going for another day before crashing for 16 hours straight. I'm cognisant that like money, time and energy must be invested judiciously. Also, sleep debt is real. Accrue too much and it takes a long time to pay back. For me, a five-day workweek with less than seven hours of sleep daily requires two straight weeks of proper sleep to repay. Five nights of inadequate sleep demands 14 nights of good shut-eye. I might be wrong but that sounds like an 'interest rate' of 280%.

Hi All, I'm having this problem for some time as in while travelling in gear, when I lift my foot off the accelerator, there is this whining noise and its seems to be from the auto tramsmission gearbox....some kind of sharp engine brake noise, very annoying. Car is 6 yrs old. Once I just step on accerelator slightly to keep car going, the sound disappears. I lift off pedal, sound comes back immed. I know its not wheel bearings or belts (both air-con and alternator belts hv been replaced). Hope that some forumers can help feedback what is the cause?

Another Toyota Vios has gotten into an accident similar to the white 2nd generation example that went viral few weeks back on 23 March. Thanks to an unknown vehicle's in-car camera, we can see that this black first generation Vios lost it as it crossed the metal expansion strip that joins different sections of the Anak Bukit Flyover on the PIE. As seen on SG Road Vigilante's facebook page, the car seemed like it was speeding in the drizzle when the mishap happened. Check out the lorry driver's good reaction and evasive skills in avoiding the Vios! The Vios came to a stop on lane 1 with a Prius curiously avoiding it causally. The coating, called sdst, kills bacteria, viruses and fungi upon contact and remains in place even with repeated scrubbing and cleaning, as chemical bonding agents help it to adhere tightly to surfaces at a molecular level. It is sprayed on surfaces in liquid form like regular disinfectants, and is safe on human skin. Teams from Singapore's 16 town councils applied the coating in lifts over the past two weeks following a donation of 650 litres of sdst by the Changi Airport Group's (CAG) philanthropic arm Changi Foundation. This amount was found to be sufficient to coat all 1.5 million lift buttons in Singapore's 26,000 HDB lifts. Dr Teo Ho Pin, coordinating chairman of the 15 People's Action Party town councils, noted on Thursday (April 2) that a large proportion of Singapore's population - around 3.2 million - lives in HDB flats, and that lift buttons are one of the most frequently touched components in housing estates. Asked if there are plans to roll out the coating to other public areas, Dr Teo said: "We know that residents have been very concerned and we are focusing on high-risk surfaces such as lift buttons for a start. So let's see how effective this solution is." Now that the coating is in place, he added, residents should avoid continuing to press lift buttons with hard objects like keys, as this could scrape the coating off. Sdst is manufactured in the United States and has been approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency. CAG has been using the coating for frequently touched surfaces in Changi Airport such as lift buttons, touch screens and trolley handles since February. "One of the challenges that our cleaning partners and staff face is that you can step up training and increase the frequency (of cleaning), but there's always an exposure time between cleaning when someone can come in and contaminate the surface," said CAG airport operations management managing director Jayson Goh. "So the good thing about this coating is that it creates a protective shield over the surface, and this was something that we wanted to extend nationwide with the help of the town councils." -
For those of us who grew up playing Electronic Arts's Need For Speed series, this might bring back some good memories. Based on the Underground 2 installment of the series, a Russian Youtuber made a real-life version of the game for fun but it turns out cooler than expected. We won't describe what the video is like but we are pretty sure the one minute video might very well tempt you to dig that game out to play again.

It is reasonable if 3-ton / 5-ton has speed limit of 50KM/H on expressways. But when you see GP cars or Jeeps crawling at 50KM/H at lane 3, especially near highway exits or entrances you will cringe when there is a long queue.- 87 replies

Anybody needs new gas springs for their car's bonnet or boot? It is the lift supports that assists you in lifting the heavy covers of the cars when opening them. If you have furniture system that uses such lift supports and in need of change, I can assist with the change as well. Currently, I'm looking for others who needs such replacements to share shipping for the gas springs. I've have a supplier that sell these gas springs at very reasonable prices with limited lifetime warranty.

My neighbour's sec sch boy has been bringing his friends back to play mahjong everyday since last Dec. Even though they throw their fast-food waste outside the rubbish chute and mess up the place, we all just ignore them. A few weeks ago, they moved their mj table outside the flat to the lift landing and played there. As a result, we can hear them though our unit is far away fr the lift. When I came home just now, I could hear them 'washing the tiles' fr ground floor. No kidding, I'm staying on the highest flr, more than 10 floors. Never mind, I tell myself to ignore, coz that family is typical zero upbringing family. But when I step out of the lift and head towards my unit, one of them said 'happy new year 新年快乐' I continued to walk, immediately a string of vulgarities followed. Obviously he not happy I ignore him. I have decided to take action, which is the relevant authority to contact? I don't know if they are using chips to gamble, coz I nvr want to look at them. And they are obviously hooligans, my mum heard the boy quarrelling with his friends and they threaten to splash red paint on his doors. However they were back playing mj the next day. I will even call the police, but my concern is, would they say it's none of their business if they not using gambling chips?

SINGAPORE: A free-falling loading lift at a Kaki Bukit building caused a ceiling to crash onto cars in the basement car park, according to an eyewitness who spoke to Channel NewsAsia. A scene of devastation greeted the eyewitness, who only wanted to be known as Linda, when she went to the car park at about 6pm on Thursday. She was told by the building's security staff that a lift had fallen a few floors causing extensive damage in the basement car park. Channel NewsAsia understands there were two people inside the lift, but they have been rescued. Police said a member of the public called about the incident at Block 1 Kaki Bukit Avenue 3, saying the lift had malfunctioned. However, permanent residents (PRs) are not eligible to vote in lift upgrading. Why is this so? PRs pay the full market price for their resale HDB flats and conservancy charges, and do not enjoy service and conservancy rebates. They regard their flats as their homes and contribute to nation building through the taxes they pay. And yet, when HDB asks residents to vote on the lift upgrading for their blocks, PRs are not allowed to vote on the physical work that will affect their homes directly. On top of that, PRs are asked to pay the full unsubsidised price. The increased cost borne by PRs is unlikely to be recouped from a higher resale price, as citizens do not have to pay for it and so can sell their flats at a lower price. A PR owner's only option is to sell his flat before the lift upgrading is completed. Give PRs a voice on changes to their homes. Sin Kuan Cheung

Dear all, I have been quietly reading threads about the election lately. Most of the time, i stay on the sidelines. As an Aljunied GRC resident (staying in bedok north), I'm disappointed that the recent lift upgrading work has stopped ever since the election fever. for the past many months, the workers have toiled day n night and even on public holidays to expedite the process. but when election fever begins, coupled with the possibility of losing Aljunied GRC, lift upgrading work has become TOTAL silence. i see no construction workers anymore.. very disappointing. the threat is very real.

Here in Pasir Ris one of the MSC (with up to level B4 & B5 uncover) is undergoing a major upgrade since last September. 1. Addition of LIFTs for the MSC 2. Installation of Sun Shelter for the top uncovered B5 lots We were given a notice of the upgrading by a Town Council letter. The only complain we knew was the lack of parking space but the TC explained no additional floor can be installed because of technical issue. But Why install LIFT for the MSC and the Sun Shelter for the top uncovered lots. Most of the time we will drop off passengers before we proceed to the upper floor. Hope's that will not translate to an increase of the monthly charges again. Any other HDB MSC has Lift installed ?
