A woman has been hospitalised after she jumped off an expressway flyover yesterday. The woman from Myanmar is believed to be in Singapore to work as a maid. She had run away from a maid agency in Katong Shopping Centre before ending up at the flyover, located at the intersection between the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway, the Pan-Island Expressway and Sims Drive. Witnesses say that she had stood on a flowerbed on the ledge of the flyover with her arms spread, before jumping 4.5m to the road below. She was luckily not run over by any vehicles despite busy traffic at the stretch of road. A taxi has passed by as the woman jumped. The shocked driver pulled over at the road shoulder to notify the police about the incident. The woman was said to have landed partially on a small tree, breaking its branches which appeared to have absorbed the impact of her fall. She landed on the road shoulder and broke her right arm and left leg. She was conscious but in pain when she was sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital She is currently in a high dependency ward and confined to bed. Prior to the incident, she was said to have told other maids that she wanted to kill herself but it is unknown why she wanted to do so.
