Hi All, anyone familiar with Langkawi? I will be bring my family of 4 for a short holiday in Dec. I've booked the flight but arriving time will be 8pm. Thinking of renting a car for our stay there, but feel that it will be quite a waste for the 1st night. So likely to take a taxi to hotel upon arrival. Do the taxi there go by meter? If not do they chop carrot when they see me & my family arriving so late with no other option? Thanks!

Wah sei........ http://focusweek.my/Article.aspx?ArticleId=15485 In a shocking but not altogether unexpected move, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has declared Langkawi an independent state, determined to see it gain developed nation status and achieving Vision 2020, after losing all hope in Malaysia ever doing either. He explained that he had to take this drastic step to ensure that at least some part of Malaysia would be able to actualise the glorious vision he had earlier spelled out for the nation. “With Malaysia under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak going to the dogs, I see that this is the only way for me to see my Vision 2020 realised, by making my own country and pump-priming it to developed nation status,” he said. The self-declared leader explained that he bought the entire Island and its surrounding waters from the Kedah government for an undisclosed but undeniably hefty sum. “Ya I already kau tim with my son and Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir. He agreed and I have the deed with me,” said Mahathir. When asked what would be the basis for the economy of the new nation of Langkawi, Mahathir said that the island nation would capitalise on its proximity to the human trafficking routes to set up human trafficking theme parks and education camps, copying the idea of a brilliant Malaysian minister.

Hey bros/sis, thinking of going langkawi. Anyone been there before? Any tips to share with everyone here? One thing i know is that its cheaper to just leave your car at kuala kedah jetty carpark rather then shipping your car to langkawi via ferry. Or, if any of your got any field report, by all means share it with us. Come come, lets discuss!

Hi, Planning a driving trip to Langkawi this June school holiday. A few queries to ask seniors here. Had anyone driven into Langkawi before? I learned that the only way to get your car in is thru Penang and baord a ferry - how much does it cost and any complicated paperwork procedures involved? Alternative, I may park the car at Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis (which is preferred?) and take the ferry in. Anyone has good contact for car rental in Langkawi (those private operators, not the licensed operators)? My planned trip is to stop over for a night in Melaka and penang on my way up, then stop at Genting and KL on my way down. Thanks in advance for your info sharing. cheers knht

Langkawi - archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea
Siewss posted a topic in Travel & Road Trips
Hi, I've been thinking long and hard on making a trip to Langkawi this November or December, but my last trip there was more than 20 yrs ago when I was still a young kid and we caught the ferry from Penang. I remembered the water crossing to be long and arduous. Then, I remembered also, Langkawi could hardly be counted as a destination for holiday-making. There were few decent hotels and I remembered visiting some of the salted fish industry, but I also remembered doing some island hopping on foot when the tide was low. That seemed to be the highlight then. Fastforward more than 20 years, I feel the yearning to visit this quaint island once again. But this time round, I will be driving up route 3, stopping by maybe Kijal or Terengganu, then go round route 4 before heading up North to Perlis. Anybody can advice if it's better to catch the ferry from Perlis, or Kedah or Penang? Which hotel is highly recommended and what are the key activities to keep 3 atrocious kids occupied?- 70 replies
