  1. A group of Koreans’ night out on the first day of Chinese New Year ended with three of them in hospital, with injuries such as a fractured skull, a torn ear and a split lip. The six men were attacked outside Rendezvous Grand Hotel along Bras Basah Road on Jan 31 at about 4.40am. They had gone for drinks at Club Password, a recently opened outlet with Korean and Taiwanese performers. One of the Korean performers took an interest in one of the Korean men and hugged him, apparently angering another table of local men. Read the full story in The New Paper on Tuesday (Feb 4). 3. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1197405/1/.html North Korea marks Army Day, vowing war against South Posted: 25 April 2012 2014 hrs SEOUL: North Korea's military chief of staff accused the United States and South Korea on Wednesday of plotting war but said his country's own weaponry could destroy their armaments in "a single blow". Vice-Marshal Ri Yong-Ho also repeated threats of war against South Korea, vowing to "cut the throats" of those seen as defaming Pyongyang's leadership. The North has made a series of increasingly strongly worded threats against the South in recent weeks. On Monday its military threatened "special actions" soon to turn parts of Seoul to ashes. Some analysts believe the new young leader Kim Jong-Un is trying to bolster his military credentials and divert attention from a failed rocket launch this month. Ri, in a speech marking Army Day, credited Jong-Un's late father Kim Jong-Il with strengthening the 1.2 million-strong military in the nuclear-armed state. Because of this, he said, "our military is now equipped with strong modern weapons capable of destroying what the imperialists call highly sophisticated weapons by a single blow". The launch, which attracted UN condemnation, was to have been the centrepiece of celebrations in mid-April marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of founding leader Kim Il-Sung. The North bridled at comments by the South's President Lee Myung-Bak and conservative media, who said the money spent on the launch could have bought food for the perennially hungry nation. "Our military and people are full of rage against the Lee Myung-Bak's traitor groups, who dared to commit such an extreme criminal act as defaming our system and the top leadership," Ri told a national meeting in the April 25 House of Culture. "Our military and people will launch a retaliatory war in our own way... to cut the throats of the reckless provocateurs and crush the source of provocations without a trace." The US and its ally the South were making "ever-intensifying plots for war", he said. The ceremony attended by Kim Jong-Un and other top leaders marked what the North calls the 80th anniversary of the military's founding, during the guerrilla struggle against Japanese colonial forces. The North says its rocket launch was part of a peaceful bid to put a satellite in orbit, and not a disguised missile test as the US and its allies maintain. Some analysts believe it will now stage a nuclear test, as it did in 2006 and 2009 following international censure of its rocket launches. A former chief US nuclear negotiator said on Wednesday any third test would be "somehow different and bigger" than the previous two. Christopher Hill did not elaborate in an interview in Seoul with Yonhap news agency. Some analysts believe it will use fuel from a uranium enrichment programme disclosed in 2010, rather than plutonium as previously.
  4. i've been wanting to change my car for a few months now, was at a car wash when a driver with the new jetta pulled up beside and i chatted with him about his new car according to him he's able to get 13 - 16++km/l easily despite the car being new and haven't ran in, plus because there is no vtec the car's power can be felt without having to hit 4.5krpm so i dropped by VW today after work to view the jetta, was extremely disgusted by the interior quality - no boot release lever, its a button recycled from the windows up/down plastic - hard interior plastics reminds me of the hyundai getz, the car might look good when new but it certainly won't look the same after 3 years - car seat railings are clearly exposed - leather seats lack the premium leather touch that you'll find in a passat - steering wheel feels cheap, like from a getz - despite reviews saying that the interior space has increased the car is not more spacious than a honda accord. the accord is the least spacious when compared against the camry, teana, i45 and k5 i decided that it would be well worth it to top up the 10k to get a scirocco, went over to the car and found the same lousy quality interior for what is supposed to be a premium car. i had expected at least quality on par with a honda accord or a civic but the touch was bad, the rear passenger seats lack space and unlike the kia koup, the front seat pull down lever doesn't automatically push the seat forward. worst, there is no such lever for the driver's seat the only car i could live with was the golf but i don't like the idea of driving a hatchback. the passat feels solid too but its too big for me to drive i'm very surprised that sgcarmart's reviews say that VW's quality is amongst the best. during my visit i dropped by honda to view the civic and kia to view the k5 and koup. the k5 had the best interior, koup's interior was good too. the new civic is very cramped but has an interior that is slightly better than the koup. but the worst interior quality was in the jetta and followed very closely by the scirocco i found myself more comfortable in the cheapest car i saw, the kia koup than in a premium scirocco. i can't decide which is worst, the cramped civic or the lousy quality jetta am i the only one thinking this way? the koreans were amazing! top notch interior, plastics felt expensive, leg rooms are great the k5 even has a foldable gps unit built into the pillar. i'd have a hard time deciding between the k5 and the passat if the passat were priced the same against the k5. edit: i didn't test drive any of the cars, i was originally interested in the sport tsi jetta or the scirocco but was too turned off by the interior to ask for a test drive. is the drive that amazing? online reviews say that the older jetta's handling is beyond words terrific. how's the kia koup's drive? the car impressed me a lot! the k5 too, but i'm more into a 1.6L car for the fuel economy and lower road tax
  5. ST Forum Jun 20, 2011 Cabbies here can learn from South Koreans WHEN I was in Seoul, South Korea, recently for a holiday, I took a taxi from the hotel I stayed in to the Namdaemun area. Once I gave the cabby the address I wanted to go to, which my tour guide had written in Korean, he keyed the details into the cab's Global Positioning System (GPS) and followed the directions given after pressing the meter. When I wanted to head back from Namdaemun, I showed the hotel name card to the taxi driver. Without delay, he keyed the details into the GPS and followed the route given. I think cabbies in Singapore should learn from the South Korean taxi drivers. In the event of any uncertainty on any routes in Singapore, if a passenger notes that the taxi driver followed the GPS, arguments could be avoided. I think the authorities should look into this as a way to make things easier for tourists in Singapore. Tan Shao Ken
