After a recent spate of engine fires, Ferrari has officially issued a recall of the 458 Italia. According to the automaker, an adhesive used to attach a heat shield under the rear fender can ignite under high temperatures, leading to a larger fire in the engine bay. We've seen at least four cases on the internet of flaming 458s like this one, and while we can't say for certain, it would seem this adhesive is the likely cause. Ferrari has designed a new heat shield that attaches with rivets, negating the need for the adhesive. Naturally, 458 owners are urged to call a dealer to schedule an appointment for the free fix.

According to a recent report, the Ferrari 458 Italia Spider will feature a folding metal roof. While the car had been expected to use a canvas roof, a member of the TeamSpeed forum has said sources in Maranello have decided against it. Instead, the Spider will reportedly adopt a folding hardtop similar to the one used on the California. This should allow for maximum convenience and security, but it will likely come with a weight penalty. Regardless if these rumors are correct, the 458 Spider will feature a 4.5-liter V8 engine with 570 PS (562 hp / 419 kW) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. Power will flow to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which will likely enable the roadster to rocket from 0-100 km/h in less than 3.6 seconds. As we have previously reported, Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has stated "We also plan a spider version (of the 458 Italia), but not for a couple of years." Source: teamspeed

A Ferrari 458 Italia has been involved in an accident in Wroclaw, Poland. While details are limited, the crash occurred on May 20th at 1:45 PM local time. According to witnesses, the Ferrari was traveling at 60-70 mph (97-113 km/h), in a 30 mph (48 km/h) zone, when a bus made a sudden left turn in front of it. To avoid hitting it, the Ferrari veered left and crashed into a Volkswagen Bora. While the accident was relatively minor, police determined the Ferrari driver (who's reportedly an Austrian in their early 20's) was at fault because they were speeding. To refresh your memory, the 458 Italia is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 with 570 PS (562 hp / 419 kW) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. Backed up by a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the 458 rockets from 0-100 km/h in less than 3.4 seconds before hitting a top speed in excess of 325 km/h (202 mph). Source: wreckedexotics

The crew at the Axis of Oversteer have managed to snag what could be the first images of the upcoming Ferrari 458 Italia Challenge, and while no one's claiming that this is the real McCoy just yet, it's certainly packing the right kit. The standard coupe's five-lug wheels have been nixed in favor of a single lug units, with each nine-spoke, lightweight hoop framing massive carbon ceramic stoppers. The Challenge appears slightly lower than stock and includes some revised aero bits in the form of longer, wider side skirts, a revised fascia and a bonnet sporting a set of hood pins. Out back and inside, things appear to be slightly rough around the edges, so it's safe to assume this is just a prototype for the time being. However, the roll cage, plastic windows and deeply bolstered race seat are all sure to make the cut when the Challenge debuts later this year. One thing we do know: The launch of the 599 GTO is going on this week in Italy, so it's likely that journalists are getting a sneak peak at the Challenge between making runs in Ferrari's Enzo-beating GT. That being the case, expect all the details to be revealed shortly. Source: Axis of Oversteer

We're gearing up for the release of Transformers 3, even though it won't be hitting the big screen until July 1, 2011. And while the second installment of the Transformers series didn't exactly thrill us with its storyline, there's no arguing that the awesome graphics made for a pretty decent summer blockbuster. But now, there's a new reason to get excited. At a Ferrari charity event this week, director Micheal Bay confirmed that the sexy, pulse-quickening 458 Italia will join the cast of Autobots. We can't wait to see Ferrari's new stunner put into action, especially along equally appealing co-star, Megan Fox. Hubba hubba.

Formula One pundits have for years been saying that Ferrari was the team where Fernando Alonso was always supposed to be. The folks at the Scuderia evidently agreed when they finally signed the only driver to beat Schumacher at his own game. And they aren't about to let him forget it now that he's home. So it should come as little surprise that, after handing him the keys to a Maserati GranCabrio, reports are surfacing that the champ has also received (or is soon to receive) a Ferrari 458 Italia as well. Sources suggest that the car may have been part of his contract. The car in question was spotted by a FerrariChat forum member while in Maranello, decked out in Bianco Fuji (Ferrari-speak for pearl while) with Alonso's signature logo embroidered into the headrests right below the Prancing Horse... right where it's always belonged.

Last week the Ferrari 458 Italia made its debut on North American soil at a party hosted by the Italian automaker in Southern California. The guest list was limited to celebrities and Ferrari's top clients, all of whom got their first peek at Ferrari's F430 replacement. As part of the event, the very first 458 Italia designated for the U.S. was auctioned off for charity to the highest bidder with 100% of the proceeds going to benefit Haiti through the CMBB (Catholic Medical Mission Board) and the William J. Clinton Foundation. The guests were in a particularly giving mood, and a top bid of $530,000 took the car home. In addition to the 458 Italia, Ferndando Alonso's F1 racing suit and two Scuderia Ferrari team member trips to the Canadian Grand Prix in June raised an additional $72,000. There's still no word on when the common folk will get to see the 458 Italia here in the United States. Ferrari will not be among the exhibitors at the New York Auto Show, but we fully expect Ferrari to bring the cars to Monterey during the Pebble Beach weekend.
