  1. Oh No. The Lotus group, makers of the Lotus Elise, Exige and Evora is rumoured to be in trouble. It seems that DRB-Hicom, the Malaysian conglomerate that owns Group Lotus' parent company, Proton may want to free itself from the wrangles of trying to turn around the sports car company. According to industry followers, notably F1 reporter Joe Saward, the management of DRB-Hicom somehow does not think that owning Lotus makes financial sense and may sell off its stake in Lotus to China Youngman, a company that already has ties with Proton. This news comes after the Lotus F1 team terminated a sponsorship agreement with Group Lotus but also stated that it had struck a five-year deal with Lotus
  2. Sometimes real life is even more bizarre than in the movies. The top brass over at Mazda North America must be really miffed as they had to approve a recall for 65,000 Mazda 6 made between 2009-2010 due to the fact that there have been twenty reported cases of yellow sac spiders getting in a ventilation line of the Mazda 6's fuel system. This arachnid invasion to the fuel system could cause increased pressure in the fuel tank which could lead to cracks or even a fire. The press statement did not really say how those little crawlers got inside the Mazda's fuel systems but theories suggest that the spiders may have entered the fuel tank during assembly. The cars affected were built at Mazda's US plant and only affects the cars over there. These cars include Mazda 6 sold in the US, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Mazda also reports that there have been no accidents caused by these fuel system invasion. Now for some National Geographic-like stuff for those interested in these little crawlies. The Yellow Sac spider or, as it is scientifically known, the Cheiracanthium is a species of spider from the Miturgidae family of arachnids. They are usually pale yellow in color around the abdomen area and its size ranges from 5 to 10mm. So it's pretty tiny. It is also a spider that can bite. A bite can cause a small lesion in humans and there could be a small risk of infection but its bite isn't one of those severe one that poisonous spiders like the female black widow which could kill a human. And you thought you'd never learn anything useful in an autoblog. Imagine that, spiders in your fuel lines. How do they survive in the fuel lines and tank of a Mazda 6? What do they eat? Do they sip or guzzle RON92 or do they prefer higher octane?
  3. I bring you readers more sad news about the automotive industry. After 54 years of doing so Subaru will stop producing their own small vehicles early next year. Those that remember Subaru's history will note that the company started making minicars at first. The tiny Subaru 360 was the first car ever built by Fuji Heavy Industries, a.k.a Subaru and now they will stop designing their own small cars but sell rebadged Toyota/Daihatsu since Toyota is now a major shareholder in Subaru. The reason is that in 2010, Subaru only managed to sell 93,000 small cars. Most of the cars are sold in Japan and according to the management, it isn't feasible to continue manuafacturing their own cars. It seems that rebadging a Daihatsu Boon/Sirion makes more sense economically. Of course it does. But they're so utterly predictable and dull vehicles. Take the Toyota Passo a.k.a Daihatsu Sirion/Boon a.k.a Perodua Myvi a.k.a Subaru Justy. They may look slightly different with different eylashes, skirts or jewellery, but they are basically the same shape. Everyone knows they're actually buying the same car and why they bought the certain model depended on whether the sales person managed to convince them or that they just didn't care what car they bought. Compare that with the Subaru R2 (which is already replaced by the Daihatsu Tanto) and the R1 above. Now these are really cute little cars that I'd like to drive. But I can't anymore since Subaru started rebadging the Sirion as a Justy. In fact there are quite a few R1s running around Singapore and I seriously hope that some survive the vehicle scrapping within the next few years so that people can still see how good looking these cars really are in years to come. And this little fact also made me realize that this is the real reason why the latest Subaru Impreza (pictured below) looks kind of unimpressive or slightly dull to some people. It has 'TOYOTA' written all over it. Can anyone in here name me an interesting Toyota that has been launched and in production in 2010 and 2011 aside from it being a Lexus? No. I don't think so. Subaru has hit a new level of blandness (and a new low in terms of car production) and I blame it on the general dullness of Toyota. It is as simple as that.

  5. It looks like another car company has suffered from intense competition. Daihatsu has issued a statement that it will be pulling out from the European market by 2013 citing the strength of the Japanese Yen against the Euro and the UK Pound Sterling have made exports to Europe unprofitable. How unprofitable you may ask? Well, in 2007 they sold 58,600 vehicles throughout Europe. In 2010 they sold 19,800 vehicles. Quite a massive drop indeed and one that surely makes such a drastic measure like a pull-out happen. It is quite surprising as Daihatsu is quite an expert in making small and economical cars. Europe loves small and economical cars, but this time the economics of scale do not allow Daihatsu the luxury to sell cars over there anymore. What I think is that aside from the usual increasing Yen against other currency reasoning is the fact that Daihatsu aren't making cars that are unique enough. The latest Boon/Sirion looks so similar to the previous version. The Charade/Mira is small and has the cheapest looking and hard to the touch plastics. The very splendid Copen mini coupe is ancient without a replacement in sight. Now add to the fact that they don't produce cars where they want to sell them is the biggest problem. Take note that Toyota assembles their cars in Europe (UK) and Suzuki assembles the Swift in Hungary. Not having a production base in Europe has actually made Daihatsu suffer. I somehow wonder whether this piece of news is prelude for more bad news for Daihatsu. They could eventually be totally taken over by Toyota (which already owns 51%) if things go worse for them in Asia. source:autoblog.de/autocar

  7. ZF, the German company that is famous for manufacturing automotive transmissions has developed a nine speed automatic gearbox for front wheel drive passenger cars. Yes, NINE forward speeds and it isn't a typo. And we thought seven or eight gears was more than sufficient for most cars. ZF has also stated that this gearbox isn't a prototype as it will be making its first appearance in a US made Chrysler (which is now owned by Fiat) and the nine speeder will be manufactured at ZF's brand new factory in South Carolina, United States. We've heard Mercedes using their 7 speed G-tronic automatic and Lexus using their eight speeder but now ZF claims that the nine speed gearbox enhances driving performance and also maximizes fuel economy. This compact looking nine speeder is similar to ZF's eight speed automatic gearbox for its rear wheel drive cars in its design and its characteristics. It will select the
  8. It's no longer the Nagare design philosphy for Mazda but the Shinari, said Mazda at a press conference in Milan a few days ago. The Shinari design concept car takes its design language from the Japanese concept of 'Kodo' or 'soul in motion'. This new concept will replace the natural Nagare concept which takes the flow of motion in nature. In other words, both are ideas about movement, with the new concept supposedly more soulful than the earlier more nature inspired one. The Shinari design philosophy consists of a large gaping grill which is slightly more sombre looking than the 'smiley' of the Nagare concept. The lights are slimmer and the car looks more European with its Maserati Quattroporte/Aston Martin Rapide like stance. It is slightly more subtle than the Nagare, which has curves and lines. Like water flowing. Or you may also say, a less 'happy' design. Anyway, Mazda had displayed the four door Maserati Quattroporte (from the front)/Aston Martin Rapide like concept car at the press conference and the photos herein are official renderings that have been presumably leaked on the net. Some say that the styling cues may surface in the RX8 or the Mazda 6 replacement as Mazda's design chief Ikeo Maeda mentioned to journalists that the Shinari will become the next generation of the Mazda design language. The older Nagare concept was penned by Mazda's previous design chief, who has since joined Renault. There are two reasons why Mazda chose to change the design philosophy. One is that the Nagare concept with its smiley face and curves and cuts everywhere is hard to translate to metal. The more cuts and curves means more shape forming. Meaning panel work may be at an extra cost for Mazda. The face lifted Mazda 5 MPV was restyled to the latest Nagare concept which was showcased in the Furai concept car and it did not seem too successful with all those extra lines at the side of the MPV. I.e Too much style for style's sake. But the second reason could be stronger. A new design chief would want to prove his mettle over his predecessor. Hence the change in design philosphy. 10. US automotive supplier Johnson Controls is about to take over the Keiper Recaro Group, famous for vehicle seats (both commercial and passenger vehicles) as well as metal seat frames and structures and those RECARO bucket seats that we all love. An agreement for the sale of Keiper Recaro Group was entered into between Putsch GmbH & Co. KG, the holding company for Keiper Recaro and Johnson Controls. Most may not have heard of Johnson Controls, but they actually are market leaders in automotive car interiors (dashboards, consoles, door trims, etc)and electronics (the integration of electronics into interiors) with 130,000 employees in 1,300 locations on 6 continents. Not many have actually heard of Johnson Controls. Before actually knowing that they are one of the major players in the automotive industry I always thought of them to be either a pharmaceutical company or they did something related to pest control. This was a good couple of years back. Anyway, if approval by anti-trust authorities is given for the sale to be carried out, the passenger and commercial vehicle lines under Keiper Recaro will be under Johnson Controls while Recaro Aircraft Seating, Recaro Child Safety (child safety seats) and home/office furniture manufacturer Recaro Home will not be included as part of the sale. What basically happens is that Putsch Holding (the previous owners of Keiper Recaro) will retain the rights to the Recaro brand but Johnson Controls are given a long term license for the exclusive worldwide use of the brand for automotive and commercial seats. The reason for the sale is that Keiper Recaro
  11. -2011 Jetta - Volkswagen Group (VW) has finally signed an agreement with a Malaysian company to manufacture its cars in Malaysia. The partnership with DRB-HICOM (DRB) will be a joint venture agreement with DRB holding a 70% stake in the venture while VW the remaining 30% and the total investment of this would be around RM1 billion. It will enable VW to manufacture cars in Malaysia as well as throughout South East Asia. What will happen firstly is that the local assembly of the 2011 VW Passat and 2011 VW Jetta models will start rolling out of DRB
  12. Before we get to the details, I have to say that going green does not actually mean having things colored green. But no one told Marangoni who has decided to showcase their new eco-friendly line of tires which are very green in color on a TRC Italia tuned Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1750 Quadrifoglio Verde. The Marangoni/TRC Italia Giulietta has been christened the Giulietta G430 iMove. I suppose the name comes from the fact that the car features a body kit that takes all of its cues from the Ferrari F430 but I have no idea why they also named it the 'iMove' as it isn't a product from Apple not does it multi-task as good as one. I suppose Marangoni requires something new and flashy and the new Giulietta suits the part. The eco-friendly tires must be like more energy saving tires – low rolling resistance thus improving fuel consumption. However, I doubt how much fuel savings you could get from low rolling resistance when the tires and wheels are 19inch in diameter and has a width of 235mm. Those funky green demo tires are 235/35 ZR19 and boast a....get this...fluorescent green pigment that glows in the dark. It is also has a very high silica content which should also help in the grip department. So in order to for the very over-tired Giulietta to move TRC Italia have changed the turbocharger and meddled with the electronics so that the car pushes 286bhp instead of 235bhp. So aside from the steam roller wheels and tires, the car gets KW's fully adjustable suspension setup which lowers the car by 40mm to improve handling. The 51 extra horses get to stop much faster too as the brakes are upgraded to 330mm TAROX discs and calipers. The interior is as green as the tires. The seats and door trims have that same fluorescent green color. But whatever the case, the whole human race has been so used to having normal black/dark gray tires that fluorescent green tires look tacky, or totally weird. Maybe the main point is to attract as much attention as possible and nothing else. If that is the reason, it would totally work. The car is set to appear in this month's Bologna Motor Show and all of the TRC Italia upgrades stated will be on sale by early next year. However, I am seriously hoping that Marangoni does not sell their 'Green' tire in the color green.
  13. Honda has decided to join into the developing nations small car market with the Brio concept car at the Thailand International Motor Show recently. The tiny city car is meant for the emerging markets as Honda states that they intend to start sales of the Brio in Thailand and India in 2011. The car seems to have edgier design cues and it looks like a smaller Mazda 2 with a huge chrome Honda grille. This look is unexpected as it looks different from the pretty feminine Jazz supermini, the most common small Honda these days. The Brio is based on Honda's city car concept and looks extremely production ready unlike the earlier mock-up versions announced nearly a year ago. The Brio will be unique to each and every country it is sold. Honda has stated as an example where the Thai version will be more efficient and better equipped than the Indian version. This is presumably because the Thai market is slightly more affluent and more demanding than the less demanding Indian auto market. If you do not know how 'less demanding' the Indian market is, Suzuki is still selling the Suzuki 800 from the 1980s over there and even the Alto imported into Malaysia from India seems to have a slightly budget looking interior than one could have expected (after their SX4 and Swift models). Anyway, Honda is entering the same category as the Suzuki Alto, Kia Picanto and Hyundai's i10 town cars and I suppose these companies would be slightly worried by the entry of another innovative player in both tightly contested markets. No major details have been revealed as yet including the size of the engine. Some are speculating that the company's 1.2liter i-VTEC engine that powers the base Honda Jazz/Fit models. Of course the main question now would be whether the Brio would be sold elsewhere, especially here in the South East Asian region.
  14. On November 29, 2010 the Fiat Group announced that it will complete the separation of its car manufacturing division and its truck and tractor division by the 1st of January 2011. The separation will enable both divisions to have a clear focus on their core businesses. The separation will create Fiat SpA, which will handle all car related matters and Fiat Industrial SpA, which will handle the Group's commercial vehicles, trucks, agricultural & construction equipment as well as some of the powertrain divisions within the Group. Each new group will have their own management team and its own board of directors. The separation also allows both Fiat SpA and Fiat Industrial SpA to be listed separately on the Milan Stock Exchange. Allowing for more shareholding to be traded and more investors too. The announcement previewed the new logos of the newly formed groups which basically replace the group logo (shown below). Maybe with this we'll see better Fiats, Lancias, Alfa Romeos and Chryslers (of which Fiat owns 20%) and maybe better Iveco trucks too.
  15. Automobili Lamborghini, manufacturer of world renowned supercars has launched a brand spanking new official online store for their customers and fans to purchase official Lamborghini branded stuff. Http://www.lamborghinistore.com features direct ordering without online registration and is managed by a subsidiary of Lamborghini Holding, Lamborghini Artimarca SpA with EPI Merchandising, an e-commerce provider and licensee of many other top brands. I suppose Lamborghini intends to fully capitalize on its brand worthiness by providing a more interactive avenue to market and sell products under its name. This is much like its Italian rivals, Ferrari, who however seem to have caught on this brand marketing trend very early on and now has its name plastered on everything from mugs, cellphones, t-shirts, laptops and most probably on some kitchen sink too. Anyway, from Collezione Automobili Lamborghini, you can buy online a mug for 24Euro (not including shipping) or customize a 1963 vintage look sweatshirt with your name for 170Euro. There are also mouse pads, pillows, teddy bears, menswear, womenswear, children's wear, Lamboworld items as well as Super Trofeo branded apparel (Super Trofeo is the Lamborghini Gallardo specific championship). For those that do not only want to buy the brand but something higher up the product line there is also the Lamborghini LP640 by Versace lineup. The LP640 moniker comes from the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 model that ironically had been recently discontinued. There are LP640 keyrings, bags, wallets and a belt. The key ring alone costs 205Euro, which is actually pretty reasonable if you intend to use it to hold the key of your 170,000Euro Gallardo. It would be as useful if it held the ignition key to a slightly used and slightly battered Fiat Panda.
  16. Something does not come out of nothing and there is usually a price to pay. Toyota has learned from a recent study that their hybrids, especially the ground breaking (but downright dowdy) Toyota Prius aren't as eco-friendly to manufacture compared to other vehicles. Normal cars somehow make less pollution during the manufacturing process. This comparison is in terms of emissions of nonmethane hydrocarbons and particulates, which is emitted during the process of manufacturing the electric motor, inverters and the nickel metal hydride batteries. In other words, in order to manufacture the Prius, Toyota needs to expand or use more energy to produce that extra electric motor and all of its ancillaries whereas a normal single engined fossil fueled car does not need the extra manufacturing processes. Toyota had found out during these life cycle emissions assessments that when compared to cars in the same class, the Prius emitted more bad stuff during manufacturing but fared better over its lifetime in use. The Prius is better than the average same sized car in terms of CO2, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide over its lifetime. I suppose this meant that Toyota had began its study on the Prius ever since it first started manufacturing it in 1997. A good 13 or so years of information and covers the average 10 year lifespan of any vehicle. Toyota has stated that it will use the findings to ensure that all of its hybrids, which would include the newly launches Lexus hybrid hot hatch, the CT200h F Sport (photo below)
  17. [extract] Pontiac is no more. After 84 years of producing Pontiacs, General Motors have ceased producing the brand famed for the GTO, Trans Am and the Firebird. It joins other GM brands like Geo, Saturn, Oldsmobile and Hummer in automobile heaven. Or hell, depending on how you think of the brand. I especially like the 1970s Trans Am or Firebird, complete with that Firebird that looks like a flaming chicken. Very 70
  18. Malaysia's Lion Group, owner of the Malaysian tire manufacturer Silverstone Bhd is selling the Silverstone tire brand to Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd. of Japan. According to press reports, Lion Forest Industries Bhd, the Lion Group company that holds 100% of Silverstone or 203.88million shares of RM1 each in Silverstone Corp. Bhd. Seeks to dispose the whole amount for RM462million (SG$192.333mil) to Toyo Tire. The purpose of the sale is that Lion Group wishes to realise its investment and unlock the value in Silverstone and wants to use part of the proceeds to settle an inter-company debt amounting to RM22.5million as at 30th June 2010. In other words, Lion Group wants to make a decent RM140million in cash from the sale as well as pay off some cash advances to the parent company. This gain will be reflected in Lion Forest's financial year ending 30th June 2011 accounts, which translates to an increase in earnings of 0.60sen per share. The report also states that Lion Group is consolidating its businesses and wants to put more focus on its steel and retail businesses. Lion Group is one of Malaysia's key steel manufacturing players. We all know what Toyo is known for; their tires like the Proxes R888 especially as well as their industrial rubber, soft and rigid polyurethane products and is listed on the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya stock exchanges. It is the fourth largest tire manufacturer in Japan. Toyo has a market capitalization of US$513million and expects to fund the takeover of Silverstone Tires through internal funds. Silverstone is a surprisingly profitable business entity. It saw its net profit double to RM33.57mil for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010 for the previous financial year and its net asset stood at RM285.67mil for the same period. Silverstone Tires will be Toyo Tire
  19. According to the UK daily The independent, Peugeot has not tested their 107 mini car for crashes where the driver weighs more than 78kg. This piece of news came about during an inquest at the High Wycombe Magistrate's Court in Buckinghamshire regarding the death of one Mrs Judith Evans, who weighed 102kg. She had died when the Peugeot 107 she was driving crashed head on into a Vauxhall Vectra on January 20th, 2009. The inquest arose from Vehicle Safety Consultancy Ltd (VSC), which was asked by the Thames Valley Police to consider the protection offered to Mrs Evans in the collision after they noticed her injuries seemed unusually severe for the force of the impact. A mechanical engineer at VSC, had said Mrs Evans, who was 56 at the time suffered injuries deemed by experts to be

  21. One of the most bizarre stories to surface recently is that the Volkswagen Group (VW) is seriously interested in buying Alfa Romeo from Fiat S.p.A (Fiat). This rumor surfaced sometime last week where two unnamed VAG executives had stated that the group was interested in Alfa Romeo. In the bid to become the largest automotive manufacturer in the world, or in other words, trying to usurp Toyota from the throne, VW is still on a buying warpath. Hence the supposed need for another car brand like Alfa Romeo. Of course, Fiat did not take the rumors sitting down and has stated that the company has no intention of selling Alfa Romeo and is sticking to their turnaround plan for the brand that was announced by the Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne in April of this year. He had stated that Alfa will be a full line premium manufacturer and they plan to ramp up sales from 102,000 units in 2009 to around 500,000 units by 2014. Ambitious numbers nonetheless. Anyway, these industry rumors are really far fetched sometimes. VW CEO Martin Winterkorn had stated in April that VW was in the midst of taking over Porsche and is not planning to add another brand at the moment. VW also recently concluded the purchase of Italian Automotive Design firm Giugiaro and Winterkorn also said that VW

  24. Ahah! After many finger pointing, throwing of accusations, requests of public apologies and other witch hunts, it seems that Toyota cars may not the culprit in the totally blown out of proportion sticking accelerator pedal fiasco. Over the past twelve months or so Toyota have been recalling up to 10million or so of their cars due to supposed safety defects that caused some Toyota cars to accelerate out of control. It is now being concluded that driver error may have been a cause for many of the incidents. The United States National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) has now stated that data recorders showed that the brakes may not have been applied by the driver in 35 of the 58 incidents. In 9 of the cases, the NHTSA explained to the United States Congress that the brakes were applied very late and any car would not have been able to stop in time. In one other case, both the brake and accelerator pedals were pressed at the same time. It could show that big feet may be the cause for this. In a panic situation the driver may have stomped blindly and pressed either the wrong pedal, or both pedals. Well, Americans do have a lot of people wearing size 11s out there. Whatever the reason, it could now be seen that Toyota may have been very wrongly accused. Even with their admission of design flaws, it may actually be a conspiracy against them. We all know that when all heck broke loose, Toyota had just overtaken General Motors taking the number one car manufacturer slot. A weak American economy, loss of jobs at General Motors, Ford and Chrysler may have actually caused sinister game plans to come into play. Much like the BlackBerry issue right now where Saudi Arabia, UAE and maybe India deciding to ban the phone's key messenger services. With 500,000-1,000,000 users of the service in those countries, you could tell that security issues aside, many phone companies would benefit from a BlackBerry ban. The NHTSA has also stated that this is still an 'early stage' of the investigation and it will not be drawing to any conclusions from this report. These findings will however form one part of the United States government to get to the bottom of the 'unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles. Whatever the real reason may be, Toyota seems to have managed to survive all the recall and reputation issues. They have actually declared a US$2.23billion nett profit based on their financial year ended 31st March 2010. While they declared slight loss of profit in areas where the recall issue affected them the most (America, Europe), the other areas had recorded growth in sales and this had balanced the books in the end. Imagine making so much profit from a net loss of over US$500million in the previous fiscal year. Some comeback, like nothing actually happened. If this were really a conspiracy by a few other companies trying to undermine Toyota, they've failed. Big Time. But lets keep our eyes and ears wide open and see what's going to happen next. Remember the NHTSA stated that the investigation is still ongoing.
