  1. Quote from Yahoo News: 2 shophouses partially collapse at Syed Alwi Road, 6 injured Two shophouses partially collapsed at Syed Alwi Road in the early hours of Tuesday (8 Oct). According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the team was alerted to the incident at 1.30am. "Upon arrival, SCDF immediately commenced a search of the area to ascertain if anyone was trapped under the debris. Two search dogs and a drone were also deployed to augment the search operation," they wrote. As passersby reported hearing a loud blast, a firefighting machine was deployed as a precautionary measure, to disperse any potential build up of flammable gases using its water mist spray function. Firefighters rescued a victim who was trapped on the second storey of the affected shophouse at 84 Syed Alwi Road using a ladder. No one was found trapped under the debris, said SCDF. SCDF shared, "Two persons were assessed by paramedics for minor injuries and conveyed to Singapore General Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Four other persons were also assessed for minor injuries but they declined to be sent to the hospital." CNA reported that, according to the Building and Construction Authority, the cause of the incident is "suspected" to be a gas explosion.
  2. For example the Heritage East, which is a Conservation Shophouse. What are the pros and cons? Will the government forbid you enbloc or certain renovations or require particularly good maintenances?
  3. Conservation at work. Total banned areas now total 18. It is to prevent parking and traffic problems from worsening. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/no-new-eating-houses-at/1409976.html SINGAPORE: The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has named seven new locations where additional eating houses will not be allowed to be set up so as to prevent the existing parking and traffic problems in the areas from worsening. This brings the number of places where new eating houses will not be approved to 18. The new sites deemed to be problematic traffic areas are: Changi Road, which include Jalan Eunos / Still Road to Jalan Kembangan and Frankel Avenue Upper Paya Lebar Road from Lorong Ah Soo to Paya Lebar Crescent Bukit Timah Road, at Wilby Road to Elm Avenue and Anamalai Avenue to Fourth Avenue Sembawang Road - from Mandai Road to Transit Road Kampong Bahru Road to Sporttiswoode Park Road Kampong Glam Jalan Riang in the Braddell Heights area. The URA said it has worked with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to assess the existing traffic and parking situations as part of their periodic reviews. The agencies also took into account the concerns of residents, as well as existing tenants who want a balance of businesses in the area. Mr Saeid Labbafi, chairman of the Kampong Glam Association, said: "What the Kampong Glam retailers wish to see is a balance between the businesses. We do know that this place is place targeted for conservation, one of the historical places in Singapore. The more time passes, the more the place becomes unique because of its rarity in the area and because of its cultures, and all this thanks to lot of help from the government. We wish to see a balance of the businesses here." For proposed eating areas outside the existing list where food establishments can no longer be set up, URA said it will evaluate them with the LTA, for consideration of approval under its planning guidelines.
  4. Don't you think so? I meant geographical aspects. Not about land value but make sure it doesn't flood when it rains! Imagine you buy a house in an area that gets flooded when it rains? If not condo with underground carpark and the carpark gets flooded when it rains or low level units etc. Just to point out that its only going to get worse due to global warming. There will be less but more severe thunder storms, thus flash floods will occur more frequently.
  5. Dear all, I'm staying in a semi-d with a 2-way lane in front of my house. The single lane on the opposite side facing my house has double yellow lines whereas the single lane on my side has no lines, hence we residents are allowed to park on my side of the lane. Recently however I noticed my new neighbour who is staying on the opposite side who actually used his "888" brand dustbins to reserve the lot and many have since followed. Is this legal? I have taken pictures of these dustbins sitting prominently on the roads and who shall I make a formal complain to if it is not? Has anyone in this forum who have a similar experience before who can advise? Thanks in advance!
