hmmmmmmm sth brewing? @tianmo https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/a-level-results-students-apply-polytechnic-skip-semester-courses-11245456 Singapore A-Level results out next Friday; graduates who opt for polytechnics can skip semester image: data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw== File photo of students at Singapore Polytechnic. (Photo: TODAY) 15 Feb 2019 11:22AM (Updated: 15 Feb 2019 12:21PM) Share this content BookmarkSINGAPORE: The results of the GCE A-Level examinations will be released next Friday (Feb 22), the Ministry of Education (MOE) said on Friday. Students may collect their results from their schools from 2.30pm on that day, while private candidates will be notified of their results by post. The ministry also announced on Friday that A-Level graduates who choose to further their studies at polytechnics can now skip the first semester for more than 100 courses. Currently, most A-Level graduates apply for and enrol in a polytechnic only one year after getting their results. This is because most polytechnic admissions exercises would have closed by the time the A-Level results are announced. READ: O-Level grades will no longer form part of admission scores for Poly grads applying to NUS, NTU from 2020From Academic Year 2019, eligible A-Level graduates can be admitted directly to Year 1 Semester 2 each October for 110 polytechnic courses, up from the current nine. This will reduce their polytechnic course from three years to two-and-a-half years. Advertisement The 110 courses make up about half the diploma courses offered by the five polytechnics, and span several course clusters. “A-Level graduates who are not enlisting in National Service will be able to enter the polytechnics in the same year that they receive their A-Level results. As a result, this group will be able to graduate one year earlier,” MOE said. image: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/image/11245562/0x0/819/511/72007b68a9c769b719a86efa69bb462d/Df/polytechnic-admission-for-a-level-infographic.jpg Source: Ministry of Education Interested A-Level graduates will be able to apply to the polytechnics directly for these 110 courses in mid-August, for matriculation at the start of AY2019 Semester 2 in October this year. More details will be available on the respective polytechnics’ websites by March 2019. 200 A-LEVEL GRADUATES ENROL IN POLYTECHNICS ANNUALLY Places for A-Level graduates will be separately catered for, and there will be no impact on the number of places for O-Level graduates or ITE graduates, MOE said. "The number of places for A-Level graduates will depend on the demand from and quality of applicants, and hence will vary from year to year," it said. According to the ministry, about 200 A-Level graduates are admitted each year to the five local polytechnics – Nanyang, Ngee Ann, Republic, Singapore and Temasek. "These are students who are keen to pursue an applied pathway at the polytechnics, that matches their area of interest or aptitude," it said, adding that the number includes both A-Level graduates who have applied and those who did not apply to the local universities. READ: Better pay, job prospects for polytechnic graduates in 2018: SurveyFor most polytechnic courses, A-Level graduates would need passes in two relevant H2 subjects to receive module exemptions. These requirements may differ for specific courses. Courses which offer module exemption have "sufficient commonalities" between the A-Level and polytechnic curriculums, MOE said. The exemptions are mostly for polytechnic foundational modules, and students would have covered similar curriculum in preparing for the A-Levels. For example, A-Level graduates in Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Diploma in Information Technology may be exempted from the modules on Computing Mathematics and Programming 1 if they have passed H2 Computing or Computing Science, and H2 Mathematics. Similarly, A-Level graduates in Temasek Polytechnic’s Common Engineering Programme may be exempted from the modules on Engineering Mathematics 1, Engineering Physics, Digital Fundamentals 1 and Circuit Analysis if they have passed H2 Mathematics and H2 Physics. In the last two years, degree holders here have found themselves the most vulnerable to losing their jobs, among all qualification groups. Since 2011, they have also made up a higher proportion of residents made redundant than among all resident workers. Experts suggested three reasons for this - jobs lost in restructuring tending to be held by graduates, greater demand for non-academic skills, and substitution by skilled foreign labour. "As more graduates become available, it brings about more friction in the job-matching process," said UniSIM economist Randolph Tan. "Many graduates think that getting a degree is the pinnacle of achievement, but what they don't realise is that the workplace demands much more of them." Anyone knows where I can make those customised license plate holders where I put my own name and stuff? I asked a number plate shop, and they told me theirs is $15 but it's sticker??!! Meaning it's just stickered on the original frame. But I do believe I've seen embossed or printed ones on the road before. PIs also have their own customised number plate frames for the cars they sell. So it must be able to be done somewhere. Would like to know where to do and pricing for a pair too if possible. TIA!

Published on Mar 26, 2012 Ministers and other political appointment holders will be paid a National Bonus this month equivalent to 1.6 months of their pay. The National Bonus is a new bonus that provides a direct link between the salaries of political appointment holders and the socio-economic progress of average and lower-income Singapore citizens and the growth of Singapore. It came about after Parliament endorsed the White Paper on 'Salaries for a Capable and Committed Government' in January this year. Based on the approved formula, the 2011 National Bonus is 2.625 months but since the new salaries took effect on May 21 last year, the pro-rated amount will be 1.618 months, to be paid in March 2012, the Public Service Division (PSD) said in a statement on Monday.

I have been wondering if there is a way to identify the season parking ticket holders for the carpark at my block. I'm not sure if the cars parking at the carpark is always full in the day. All of them has a season parking ticket. How to differentiate.

Get employed first....bring family in....apply PR.....six months later apply at another company. The second company will really think these EP holders are good workers and really earning >$3000 per month. The EP may ask for same or slightly lower pay to entice the second company to hire them. The EP holder will be laughing to the bank when they changed job and really got the $3000 salary. The second company thought got a good deal. The first company gladly rid itself of the lousy worker. Everyone is happy. Singapore economy inflate. The published salary scale increase higher....everyone think Singaporean are getting good pay.....But there is more than meets the eyes?. Foreigners offer to 'pay' for employment passes They will 'return' part of salary for pass allowing dependants in By Melissa Kok & Amanda Tan EMPLOY us and we will 'pay' you. That offer was made to Mr Henn Tan, owner of a local technology firm, when he interviewed two men - a Myanmarese and a Filipino in their 20s. They had applied to work as a webmaster and a software engineer respectively. The jobs, which pay at least $3,500 a month, would have earned them Employment Passes (EPs) here. When told they were not qualified for the positions, they offered Mr Tan, 54, a deal: they would 'return' half their salaries to him each month, as long as he hired them on EPs. Some foreigners are allegedly offering to return part of their salaries to prospective bosses if they are hired on the coveted EP, which now requires applicants to earn more in order to qualify. EP holders - often graduates working in professional, managerial or specialist jobs - are allowed to bring their spouses and children to Singapore on Dependant's Passes. Recounting the incident, which took place in April, Mr Tan, chief executive of Trek 2000 International, said: 'They told me if I allowed them to be hired on EP, they would 'kick back' the balance to me.' He rejected the offer. But not all have stood firm. In the first three months of this year, five employers of EP and S Pass holders - usually mid-skilled workers - were taken to task for making false declarations in their work pass applications, said the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). False declarations could include inflated salaries and forged qualifications. One employer was fined $5,000, while the rest were jailed between one and six months. Several others are currently being investigated. In the first nine months of last year, 141 foreigners were convicted for lying in their work pass applications, up from 137 in the whole of 2009. MOM did not provide updated figures. Seven out of 10 recruitment firms interviewed by The Straits Times said they had heard of such under-the-table deals. In some cases, employers had artificially 'inflated' salaries so they could hire more foreigners. There is no cap on the number of EP holders a firm can hire - unlike lower-tier S Pass or work permit holders, who are subject to quotas. Mr Lawrence Leow, president of the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, said foreigners offering kickbacks to employers in order to qualify for EPs was 'new to me'. But he added: 'I'm not surprised, especially now that it's harder to get approval for the passes.' Under new rules which came into effect this month, foreign hires must earn $2,800 a month to qualify for the EP, up from $2,500 previously. S Pass applicants are also required to earn $2,000 a month, up from $1,800. As of last year, there were 142,000 EP holders, up from 115,000 in 2009. The number of S Pass holders has grown from about 44,000 in 2007 to 98,000 as at the end of last year. Observers say there may be more instances of such under-the-table deals than reported. 'There are definitely more errant companies with such practices. But many cases don't come to light as workers fear losing their jobs,' said Mr Jolovan Wham, executive director of migrant worker welfare group Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics (Home). 'Even when employers are found out, they push the blame to the workers, saying that a worker forged academic certificates making him eligible for a higher-tier work pass.' In the first six months of this year, at least 12 workers in such a situation have approached Home for help, compared with 14 workers last year, he said. Mr Edwin Pang, executive director of the Migrant Workers Centre, said foreign workers may agree to an arrangement due to a miscommunication or misunderstanding. 'He may agree, thinking that his employment agent knows best, not realising that he is infringing regulations.' [email protected] [email protected]

DIPLOMA-HOLDER Joyce Wong had six job offers shortly after completing her media and communication course in May. Two months later, the 20-year-old started work as an account executive at an advertising agency. Her monthly pay is $2,000, higher than the average starting salary of polytechnic graduates. Meanwhile, degree-holder Lynette Tillai, 23, has had little luck since she returned in June on graduating from the University of California, Berkeley. The psychology graduate applied to 10 local firms - mostly in the social services sector - but was rejected or ignored. The stark contrast in their fate is a reflection of how the downturn has been kinder to polytechnic than to university graduates - across all age groups. This picture emerged in the latest Manpower Ministry report on the job market in the third quarter.
