Went to Hokkaido recently and would like to share some photos here. Famous for its flower flied and winter sports during winter, August is end of the summer season I think. Weather wise still cooling average around 22 C with morning and evening dropping to below 18C. This trip I rented a 8 seater and total distance covered is approx 1400 Km. While the speed limit for city is 50 km/hr and highway 80 km/hr, to maintain at 80 km/hr on highway is not so easy. Took Scoot from Singapore and transit at Taiwan (1 hour transit time) Good break but just enough time to get on the plane. Landed in Sapporo early morning. This is a short of their air port. nowhere near Changi T1 but there are buses you can catch to town. I booked Unizo Inn next to Sapporo Grand Hotel. Checked in and walk to collect my car which I booked with Budget car rental. It is within walking distance. Photos of a street shot in Sapporo and their underground train station (MRT). Beside flower and snow, Japan is also about food. 1st stop is their famous Furano Cheese factory. But, it is more like a cafe and their cakes.

SINGAPORE – A 41-year-old Singaporean woman and her four-month-old daughter died in an accident in Hokkaido, Japan on Tuesday morning. Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao reported that the car they were in collided with a large lorry in the ski town of Kamifurano at around 11.30am. News reports in Japan said that the woman’s 44-year-old husband and the couple’s elder daughter, three, were also injured in the crash. Police told Zaobao that the two who were injured are in stable condition. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/singaporean-woman-and-4-month-old-daughter-killed-in-accident-on-snowy-road-in-hokkaido?utm_campaign=stfb&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook RIP.... 😢 Driving in snow is no joke, especially when we have zero experience driving in snow

Am looking for some advice: We're going to Hokkaido next month, and are looking at renting a large MPV, so hope to get some tips and information on: 1) which MPV is good/best 2) any tips on driving in winter There will be 7 of us on the trip. 6 adults/children who are 1.7-1.8 m tall, and one 6-yo kid who needs a booster seat. There will also be quite a bit of luggage, tentatively 1-2 pcs 28", 3 pcs 24", 2 pcs 20" luggages. Looking at the options for MPVs, the larger ones are either Toyota Alphard or Nissan Elgrand, followed by the slightly smaller ones of Toyota Noah or Nissan Serena. Any bigger will be the Toyota Hiace van. Is there any possibility of accommodating all 7, plus the luggages in Alphard/Elgrand, or is it necessary to go for Hiace? I vaguely remember that @Heartlander had mentioned before renting Elgrand during a Japan trip, and also owned an Alphard before here? Care to share your experience please? Anyone else with knowledge/experience of these 2 - your opinion is welcome. If we shift the 3 rows of seats to be more 'forward', will the luggage/boot space behind 3rd row seat, be sufficient for the luggages that we have? Then on #2, driving in winter/snow, apart from going slow, and avoiding icy roads, what else should we look out for? Winter tyres are standard, and there's 4WD option for the vehicles. Thanks in advance.

September 6, 2018 Tokyo (CNN)Yet another natural disaster has struck part of Japan, continuing a summer of chaos that has seen the country weather deadly floods, typhoons, earthquakes, landslides and heatwaves. At least two people were killed when a magnitude-6.7 quake struck the northern island of Hokkaido early Thursday, causing landslides which buried a "large" number of homes at the foot of a ridge. Dozens of people were injured by the quake, mostly in Sapporo, said Kazuya Isaki, an official with the Crisis Management Office of Hokkaido Prefecture Government. Around 20 people are missing in Atsuma, near the epicenter of the quake. Public broadcaster NHK reported that flights and public transport across the region had been brought to a standstill. Nearly 3 million households lost power, according to the Hokkaido Electric Power Company. Officials said a main power station lost operations, affecting other sites. Independently owned power generators were assisting. "The electric supply was stopped to Tomari nuclear plant, but it can operate without external electric supply for one week," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said. Risk of aftershocks The powerful quake lasted almost a minute, jolting residents from their beds and collapsing roads. Near the epicenter, landslides wiped out houses in the tiny town of Atsuma, home to 40 residents. Officials told NHK at least five people were buried in the rubble. Photos from Sapporo, Hokkaido's main city on the western part of the island, showed huge cracks in the street and subsided houses. More than 4,000 defense force soldiers have been deployed to help with rescue operations, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said, and that number could rise to 25,000 if needed. Helicopter rescue crews were also dispatched and have airlifted around a dozen people to safety. Evacuation shelters have been set up in many towns and cities around the region. Aftershocks were continuing Thursday morning, and could pose a risk for the next week, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, which warned residents of the increased risk that buildings could collapse near the epicenter of the original quake. CNA news : 33 Singaporean tourists in Hokkaido accident, several injured A truck and a tour bus with 33 Singaporeans on board collided in Hokkaido's Nanae Town, reports Japan's NHK. HOKKAIDO, Japan: A number of Singaporeans have been injured in Japan after a truck and a tour bus collided in Hokkaido's Nanae Town. According to a report on NHK, the drivers of both vehicles have died. There were 33 passengers on the tour bus, all of whom were Singaporeans. The Hokkaido police said they received an emergency call at 9.43 am (8.43am Singapore time) on Thursday (Oct 23), regarding a head-on collision between a cargo vehicle and a large bus on National Route 5, a major highway on Hokkaido island. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. The Singaporean tourists will be questioned at Hakodate Central Police Station. Was in Hokkaido recently and this is my "Field Report" Prologue More than 3 years since my first "snow drive" at Falls Creek (Australia), I was initially hesitant, but still decided to visit Hokkaido with my family for my first all Winter drive. Why the Toyota Allion? The choice of car this time was limited more by the size of the "car lift"* than personal preference. *In many accommodation locations in Hokkaido, the car parks are adjoining (or separate) towers, with 1 or 2 lifts that "slot" the cars in stacks above. This is mostly due to the limited size of land the hotels sit on. Based on several Hotel Websites' "car park restrictions", the Allion was simply the largest car that would fit the aforementioned Car Lifts. Our other choices just didn't fit: The Wish was too tall, the Mark X was too wide, Picnic just too large in all dimensions

Hi Guys, Me never went to Hokkaido before. Planning to take tour although a search online seems to say it's "OK" to self drive. But due to my previous frequent business trips, I often always extend my stay with my wife for F&E in other parts of japan + other countries. Sometimes I realised that when we are on F&E, there isn't much discipline. Or even if we wake up very early to go out, sometimes it's an "inefficient" way to explore the city coz sometimes we didn't do enough homework or preparatory work since both of us are often very very busy with work / family before the trip. So I'm thinking of joining tours to Hokkaido for an "introductory" tour. Then in future, it might also be easier for me to bring kids along using the F&E method since children will need more flexibility and also my total cost will be lower. So any suggestions by bros here on which tour agency? I've so far checked out Chan Bro, SA, ASA(imitation of SA?), CTC.... seems like Chan bro's hokkaido tour is the most exp by $200-300pax compared to competition but they bring you to see Salmon spawning - Btw, I'm planning to go oct or nov. Seems like if I go in Nov, maybe no more Salmon spawning to see. Other tour companies did not mention seeing salmon spawning at Chitose river. But they mentioned some other rivers + waterfall. But I guess there should be no salmon thingy since it should be a selling point. Appreciate any advise. Thanks.

Hello forummers, Planning to go to Hokkaido in July this year. Wondering if it is gonna to be bloody expensive to do self-drive there? That's what the agency promotes "Best way to enjoy Hokkaido is through self-drive". Anyone got recommendations?
