Known for their versatility and practicality, Skoda cars have proven to be the perfect vehicles to provide assistance to those in need. What makes a good vehicle to assist those in need? Is it space, performance, or its capabilities in various road conditions? Such a vehicle must be able to adapt to changing environments quickly and effectively. At the same time, it has to be quick - be it serving the needs for cyclists in a race, or responding to life-threatening situations in emergencies. Skoda vehicles are the perfect combination. Known for their high level of practicality and versatility, they offer the best when it comes to the needs and wants of emergency services around the world. It is no surprise then, that Skodas have been spotted serving in emergency departments, to notable racing events around the world such as the Dakar Rally, and the Tour de France cycling race. A long history of service Skodas aren't new to the game when it comes to offering emergency vehicles, with a history that spans over 110 years. Laurin & Klement is a nameplate we recognise for top-of-the-line Skodas today. Back then, it was an automobile manufacturer, making coach built cars that were designed for ambulance use. What they came up with in 1906 was the C1 military ambulance. It had the ability to carry four patients. It proved to be effective transporting wounded soldiers during the war. In the following years, the versatility and practicality of Skodas stood out. In the 1960s, Vehicles like the Skoda 1203 were not just used for ambulances, but as commercial vans too. The versatile ambulance The good qualities that a Skoda offers work hand in hand with the operational needs emergency vehicles require. That point stays true today. It is no wonder that fast medical response teams around the world choose to use Skoda vehicles. Skoda's versatile SUV, the Kodiaq, fully represents this when used as an ambulance. Outfitted for medical use, it is decked out in equipment ranging from defibrillators, to even a backup electricity source. It even supports an air ambulance service in the U.K. The fast Kodiaq VRS covers ground in areas helicopters can't reach, transporting important medical personnel and equipment quickly and safely - with enough room to spare. Hard police work It isn't just about responding to medical emergencies. Police departments need vehicles that are dependable, with enough pace to respond to incidents, yet with space to deal with protective equipment such as bulletproof vests, shields and warning lamps. You can easily see why Skodas work just as well here. Usually, extensive modifications are required to fit communications equipment, for example. But in the case of the Kodiaq, it fits perfectly in the centre compartment. Thanks to the sturdy nature of Skoda vehicles, not many alterations are required either, despite the added weight of police equipment. Combined with excellent on-road performance and enough off-road abilities, it means police officers can attend to the toughest of situations quickly and effectively, every day. Going undercover One of our favourite highlights of Skodas are that they're inconspicuous, yet practical. Skoda has made the perfect cars for unmarked police vehicles, too. Skoda vehicles have found use in highway patrol units in the U.K., with the RS245 taking centre stage. With 241bhp on tap along with an unassuming exterior, it is almost guaranteed that the RS will be a dependable vehicle for highway patrol officers, be it responding quickly to an incident, or when in pursuit. Skoda even has a bulletproof version of the Superb. Almost indistinguishable from your regular Superb, it is built from high-strength steel with bullet-resistant glass. Serving two wheelers today Today, Skoda isn't just supporting emergency services with its versatile range of vehicles. Many sporting events require support vehicles. And perhaps one of the most physically demanding events are cycling tours, where Skoda vehicles are a common spot. We've seen how difficult it can get. During the Bike 'n' Blade charity cycling event last year, Skodas again proved their worth. Supporting over a 100 cyclists riding up Cameron Highlands, the Skodas used were able to carry medical supplies, bicycle spares and even refreshments for the cyclists, as they conquered over 1,400m in elevation changes. It is no surprise then, that Skoda has been the main partner of the Tour de France race for sixteen years in a row. Come this August, the Tour de France will be back, with over 150 riders covering over 3,000km. And you'll be sure to spot a Skoda, always there for those who ride.

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam regretted that some contents of the remarks made by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the 18th Shangri-La Dialogue and on his Facebook page did not objectively reflect the historical truth, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lê Thị Thu Hằng has said. She made the statement in response to reporters’ queries on Tuesday about the Singaporean Prime Minister's speech at the dialogue and the information posted on his personal website on May 31 saying Việt Nam had “invaded” and “occupied” Cambodia. Việt Nam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had discussed the issue with its Singaporean counterpart, she said. The contribution and sacrifice of Việt Nam in the joint efforts with Cambodian people to end the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime had been widely recognised, Hằng said. On November 16, 2018, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) issued a verdict on the crimes against humanity committed by the Khmer Rouge. The ruling reflected the objective historical truth, enforcing justice and ensuring fair restitution for victims, and was welcomed by the international community and the United Nations, she said. The recent accomplishments of ASEAN are the result of joint efforts by all member nations throughout the history of the association, the spokesperson said, adding that each member was deeply aware of the importance of strengthening intra-bloc solidarity based on mutual respect and common principles. As an active and responsible member of ASEAN, Việt Nam will continue working with other members to build a strong community with a central role in the region, the spokesperson said. —VNS https://vietnamnews.vn/politics-laws/520904/viet-nam-issues-statement-on-singapore-pms-speech-at-shangri-la-dialogue.html#MlxxxV4fd3fewqos.97

SEC settles charges with Tesla's Elon Musk, will remain as CEO but relinquish chairman role and pay stiff finehttps://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/29/sec-settles-charges-with-teslas-elon-musk-will-remain-as-ceo.html The SEC settled charges with Tesla over Elon Musk's bid to take the company private on Saturday. As part of the settlement, Musk and Tesla will pay $20 million each, and the billionaire will step down as chairman of the board. The Securities and Exchange Commission settled charges withTesla CEO Elon Musk over his aborted bid to take the company private, with the billionaire remaining as the helm of the company but relinquishing his chairman title and getting slapped with a hefty fine. The SEC's enforcement action brings to a conclusion a saga which began in early August, when Musk announced via Twitter that he had secured enough funding for a massive private buyout of Tesla. The SEC complaint alleged that in doing so, Musk issued "false and misleading" statements, and failed to properly notify regulators of material company events. Under the deal's terms, Musk and Tesla neither admit or deny wrongdoing alleged by regulators. "This matter reaffirms an important principle embodied in our disclosure-based federal securities laws," SEC chairman Jay Clayton said in a statement. "Specifically, when companies and corporate insiders make statements, they must act responsibly, including endeavoring to ensure the statements are not false or misleading and do not omit information a reasonable investor would consider important in making an investment decision," Clayton added. As part of the settlement, which is still subject to court approval, Musk will also pay a civil penalty of $20 million and give up his role as chairman of the board for at least three years. Additionally, the SEC imposed a $20 million fine on Tesla itself, which will also be expected to appoint two new independent directors to the board, and institute sweeping governance changes. "Musk tweeted on August 7, 2018 that he could take Tesla private at $420 per share — a substantial premium to its trading price at the time — that funding for the transaction had been secured, and that the only remaining uncertainty was a shareholder vote," regulators said on Saturday. However, "in truth, Musk knew that the potential transaction was uncertain and subject to numerous contingencies. Musk had not discussed specific deal terms, including price, with any potential financing partners, and his statements about the possible transaction lacked an adequate basis in fact," they added. On the day Musk made the surprise announcement, Tesla's stock surged by over six percent — catching off guard the bearish class of investors with whom the billionaire has crossed swords in the past. 'The quickest settlement in history' The swiftness with which a deal was announced on Saturday was striking. A provisional settlement between the SEC and Tesla reportedly fell apart on Thursday, which led to regulators summarily filing suit. Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond School of Law, said it may very well be "the quickest SEC settlement in history," and one that allows both sides to claim a semblance of victory. According to Tobias, it appeard that "it was better for each to compromise and not drag out this dispute. All secured something they wanted and gave up something." With securities regulators frequently criticized for not imposing tighter regulation on companies, a Tesla settlement allows the SEC to look like "a strict enforcer that is protecting shareholders," Tobias said to CNBC in an email. "Musk/Tesla continue to operate a successful company and perhaps behave better in the future. All are spared litigation costs and the bad publicity that could flow from prolonged litigation." Indeed, in recent days, some investors — many of whom have been wiling to discount Musk's unconventional style in favor of his perceived vision — had begun to bail on the stock. Tesla's shares, traded on the Nasdaq, closed down around 14 percent on Friday at $264, as Wall Street begun to fret over the company's ability to raise needed capital. Meanwhile, the company bonds had been falling recently, with $1.3 billion in debt coming due by March 2019. A widely circulated New York Times interview last month, in which Musk detailed the "excruciating" personal toll of running the company, set off alarm bells and led to talk of Tesla's directors getting him a second-in-command. Meanwhile, a steady stream of staff and executive departures have added to the sense of internal turmoil. Musk's prolific use of Twitter has created several high-profile headaches for him personally, as well as the company he founded. In settling the charges, regulators faulted Tesla for not exerting more control over Musk's tweeting. "The SEC also today charged Tesla with failing to have required disclosure controls and procedures relating to Musk's tweets, a charge that Tesla has agreed to settle," the agency said in a statement. "The settlements, which are subject to court approval, will result in comprehensive corporate governance and other reforms at Tesla — including Musk's removal as Chairman of the Tesla board—and the payment by Musk and Tesla of financial penalties," it added. Musk's fierce war of words against short-sellers, or investors betting on the company's stock to fall, was one of the reasons he cited when he first floated the idea of Tesla going dark. In settling with Musk, the SEC said Tesla's board would be expected to "oversee" its founder's communications with investors. "The resolution is intended to prevent further market disruption and harm to Tesla's shareholders," added Steven Peikin, co-director of the SEC's Enforcement Division, in a statement.

for those who like history... some events in our regional areas (Singapore, Peninsula Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo) that might have altered our history completely (if they succeeded) Indonesia Raya, or the Greater Indonesia first proposed during WWII and collaborated with the Japanese, in return to gain an independent Greater Indonesia. but the Japanese never agreed cos they wanted to control whole of Southeast Asia at the end of WWII, Britain took back Malaya, Singapore and north Borneo, while Indonesia became independent from the Dutch during the Konfrontasi in the 60s, this idea was proposed again, but in the end, Indonesia recognised the formation of the Federation of Malaysia Maphilindo, or Greater Malayan Federation to unite the Malay people at Malaya, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Sarawak and Sabah. But the British and Malaya thought it was a conspiracy to stop the formation of the Federation of Malaysia. this idea was discarded when the Federation of Malaysia was formed, and later ASEAN formed in 1967 sometimes you wonder what would have happened to Singapore if these plans succeeded

There was a time when car-based panel vans were all over Singapore. I remember Corollas and Datsuns making the bulk of them. Some time in the late 1990s they disappeared altogether. However, they did not actually go out of production. Some models are still available in Japan and Europe, and even Mini has a panel van. Anyone knows what happened? Was it because of certain regulations, or they just somehow went out of favour? A KE70 Corolla panel van, used to be a common sight in Singapore. A MINI panel van, recent generation. Vauxhall Astra panel van, from 2006.

Another topic got me to write this. Both my parents already dead and the missuses father as well so only the wife's mother still around. Although she's lost a lot of near term memory, slight dementia, her long term memory is amazing. So for a year or so we've been asking her to tell us about her forfathers and relatives. Based on this info we've drawn up my wife's family tree which is impossible to do without this memory. Most of this family tree has been confirmed with other relatives who couldn't remember to begin with but on prompting by my mil and chatting together they all remember. We've gone back to 1885 with a forfather who was born in Singapore although some of the older members were immigrants from China. We've discussed it all with many relations who have found it very interesting and many even the younger ones have asked for copies of the tree. Without the memory of my mil none of this would have been possible and who knows how much longer she'll be around. Maybe not many of you will be interested with your ancestors history, where they lived, when they moved here and where from, how they survived in the wars, WW1 and WW2 but it can be fascinating. If you are interested you should talk to your oldest family members asap because once that memory has gone it has gone you won't be able to get it back.

But wtf, monopoly still can suffer loss..LOL Does it affect u? http://sbr.com.sg/transport-logistics/news...loss-in-history 30% dividend cut more than possible. According to Maybank Kim Eng, SMRT has become a "fallen dividend angel" because of this historic earnings tumble, but remarked that it could use this short-term weakness as a bargaining tool to argue for higher fares through the undergoing government review. Here's more from Maybank Kim Eng: Loss guidance follows wage hike
