She was 53. "It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease," Doherty's longtime publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE on Sunday, July 14. "The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace," Sloane continued. The Beverly Hills 90210 star was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and spoke candidly to PEOPLE in November 2023 about her Stage 4 breast cancer, which had by then spread to her bones, saying at the time that she didn't "want to die." “I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better,” she told PEOPLE. "I’m just not — I’m not done.” Following her 2015 diagnosis, the actress revealed less than two years later in April 2017 that she had gone into remission, however, by 2019, the cancer returned. Doherty announced her diagnosis of metastatic stage 4 cancer publicly in 2020. Then, in June of 2023, the actress shared that the cancer had spread to her brain and that she had undergone surgery. Doherty posted on Instagram on June 6, 2023, sharing in a candid and emotional message that the cancer had spread to her brain. Luke Perry, a talented actor and a generation-crossing heartthrob, died Monday. And as these things usually go, there is a great outpouring of grief across the media -- especially social media. Here, the reaction to his death is tinged with a particular kind of discomfort. Perry was just 52, not much older than those fans who watched his '90s breakout show, "Beverly Hills, 90210," in their teens and early 20s. Despite his bad boy persona, Perry didn't die from driving too fast or overdosing on drugs or living too hard. He just -- died, as so many humans do, from a seemingly indiscriminate failure of the body. A massive stroke, his publicist said. For Perry's older fans, his death is a reminder of a youth that is receding in the rearview mirror, even as mortality is approaching way too fast. Those same girls (and a few boys) who stormed malls in the early '90s (some even getting injured in the rush), are now nearing 50 themselves. Given that the average American woman lives to be 81 and the average man 76, Perry's death comes, culturally and statistically, far too soon -- and closer to the current ages of his then-teenage fans than to the national average. Perhaps that's part of what is so jarring. If only the good die young, and many of the young die from the wildness of youth, we at least want to believe that those who die in the in-between of middle age did something to speed it all along. When someone vibrant, prosperous and beautiful dies simply because of a corporeal malfunction, it becomes painfully clear that while we can and should take care of ourselves, much of how we exit this life is beyond our control. It is also a reminder that many of us are tipping into the middle of -- or second half of -- life's ledger. Luke Perry was a flesh-and-blood human whose passing forces us to face that we are now at an age where our teen idols' bodies give out -- which is, inconveniently, also an age where our bodies could do the same. There is no positive spin on death, nothing that is made better by the passing of a talented, charismatic, and by all accounts thoroughly decent man. And these middle-aged celebrity deaths, arms-length as they are, may shock and sadden us, but they do not utterly level us or fundamentally change our lives like the deaths of close loved ones. The Berjaya group founder said he hoped there would be no objections from any party as the casino complex would benefit Malaysia in terms of foreign exchange and economic spillovers. “Malaysians and foreigners are spending their money on gambling, hotels and food in Singapore, Macau, Cambodia, the Philippines and Las Vegas. I’m sure they would like to come here. We can expect hundreds of buses from Singapore here,” he told the New Straits today in an exclusive interview. Tan had applied for a licence to operate a casino in Berjaya Hills more than 10 years ago but it was rejected amid protests from some quarters. Berjaya Hills, which is just minutes away from the country’s only casino in Genting Highlands, currently has a permit to operate slot machines. Tan said he intended to invest RM3 billion initially in the casino to turn Berjaya Hillls into a world-class tourist destination and Malaysia’s biggest tourism development. ‎The complex, located near Genting Highlands, will include a gaming centre, indoor and outdoor theme parks, food outlets, a retail mall, hotels, a convention centre and holiday homes. Tan told the paper the casino would provide jobs for about 10,000 locals. “We will reapply for the licence. Malaysia should not stick to one operator. It should be shared with other operators as tourism developments can generate a lot of income for the country," Tan was quoted as saying. “South Korea, Japan and Taiwan are looking to give out licences to operate casinos as they realise the full potential of such developments. “We will market Berjaya Hills as a new casino destination globally. I have 4,600ha in Berjaya Hills and there is lot that can be done with such a licence,” he said. Tan’s plan to revive is his latest shot at a gambling licence. In 2010, Tan’s attempt to launch sports betting was aborted after Putrajaya, which had initially granted a betting licence to Ascot Sports, a company controlled by Tan, developed cold feet and withdrew the licence following stiff opposition. “By legalising sports betting… the government could earn annual revenue of up to RM3 billion through taxes,” Tan was quoted as saying by the English-language New Sunday Times newspaper. “Why are some politicians so against this?” Muslim groups have denounced gambling and three Pakatan Rakyat-controlled states have imposed a ban on legalised sports betting which they fear could cause debt problems for punters and other social woes. Unofficial estimates put the illegal sports betting market in Malaysia as being worth as much as RM20 billion a year.
