  3. SINGAPORE - Birds continue to be a source of problem in areas of dense population in Singapore but as Channel NewsAsia finds out, it's been a challenge pinning down the relevant authorities in charge of the problem. Crows come under the purview of the National Environment Agency (NEA) while the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) handles complaints of nuisance with pigeons. But it gets a little complicated when it comes to mynahs. When Channel NewsAsia visited a coffee shop at Bishan Street 11, mynahs were seen picking at leftovers. Stall holders said the number of mynahs in their coffee shop has more than doubled in the past two years. And when they approached the NEA and AVA, both agencies said they are not in charge of handling the birds. Both the NEA and AVA confirmed this with Channel NewsAsia. This has left the coffee shop owner with no choice, but to resort to some creative methods to fend off the birds. "In the past, we used the reflection of CDs to scare the mynahs away," Bishan coffee shop owner Hong Qi Wei. "But after the second week, they came back. So now, we're trying a new method. We're using fake crows to scare away the mynahs." The NEA has seen 1,796 complaints regarding crows as of November this year -- 100 fewer, compared to the number last year. The AVA on the other hand, said it saw an increase in the number of complaints relating to pigeons. As of October, there were reports of 560 complaints, exceeding the 360 received last year. Myna and Sparrow so lucky hor ............. nobody's problem.

  5. The dreaded R word. We avoid....u believe???? [:p] Singapore's Q3 GDP grows by 1.3% on-year Singapore's economy grew by 1.3 per cent on a year-on-year basis in the third quarter of 2012, compared to a 2.3 per cent growth in the previous quarter. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the economy contracted by 1.5 per cent, a reversal from a growth of 0.2 per cent in the second quarter. Releasing the advance GDP estimates for the third quarter on Friday, the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said the Singapore economy remains on track to grow by 1.5 to 2.5 per cent in 2012. It said economic growth in the second quarter was better than expected, resulting in an upward revision of quarter-on-quarter annualised growth from the preliminary estimates of -0.7 per cent to 0.2 per cent. Commenting on the various sectors, MTI said the pullback in quarter-on-quarter growth momentum in the third quarter was mainly due to contraction in the manufacturing sector. The sector declined by an annualised rate of 3.9 per cent, following the 0.1 per cent contraction in the preceding quarter. This largely reflected the decline in output of the electronics cluster. On a year-on-year basis, the manufacturing sector grew by 0.7 per cent compared to the 4.6 per cent increase in the preceding quarter. The construction sector grew by 8.6 per cent on a year-on-year basis in the third quarter, moderating from 10.1 per cent in the previous quarter. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the sector contracted by an annualised rate of 7.5 per cent due to a decline in private sector building activities. Services producing industries rose by 1.1 per cent on a year-on-year basis, following the 0.9 per cent growth in the previous quarter. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the services producing industries grew by an annualised rate of 0.1 per cent, compared to the 0.4 per cent decline in the preceding quarter. MTI cautioned that growth could be weighed down by the subdued global economic conditions for the rest of the year. Externally-oriented sectors such as manufacturing and wholesale trade will be affected by the slowdown in advanced economies. However, it said there will be modest support to growth from healthy expansion in the transport engineering cluster and construction sector. - CNA/de
  6. Did a stupid move two days ago: placed my iPhone 4 next to a glass of water and when moving my right hand accidentally hit the glass and toppled it to cause the water inside to splash over my battered but trusty phone. In a panic quickly removed the external cover to find that inside the cover also got water. The phone display still looked ok then. Hum liao siao liao jia chao liao.... Next used my T-shirt to dry the phone while at the same time switched my brain cells on to be on NOS mode... My follow-up actions are described as follows: 1) Set phone's Auto-Lock to Never; 2) Connected phone to charger; 3) Placed phone on top of my SH decoder which was switched on; These steps are to heat up the phone and hopefully dry up any water or vapour which might have seeped in and I left this desperate set-up like that for about 5 hrs. Then the moment of truth.... While still connected to the charger I activated a games app which was my present fav Shake Spears. when there was no music though the app started out normal and went to start mode. Tried other apps and same thing happened - Bo Siah!!!! Luckily the ringing sounds ok when I tested it so the speaker seemed no affected. Bo bian left the same set-up as it was until early morning then tried again and... SUCCESS!!!!!!! This time round there was music coming out when playing game apps. HURRAY!!! LESSON LEARNT: Never placed your phone, SMART or not, next to any liquid in a glass. Heck, it is better not to place ANY sensitive electronic stuff next to any glass containing any liquid. Until today still keeping my fingers crossed... Or maybe it's time to upgrade my outdated iPhone hor?

  9. Was on the way back home in dad's car from office yest.... happened 2 traffic lights from destination(500-700m away).... It started to rain heavily and the lights were green at a junction. Just as when my dad juz crossed the junction on the leftmost lane, a cyclist(kid) went full speed across the road and banged into the side mirror at the driver's side. Side window had a long crack. Slight dent at the driver's door and a bump at the rear fender. My dad was crying aloud in the car when the bang came. My heart was thumping as i witnessed the whole thing as well... Car stopped 5m in front. When i opened the door, a huge relief came to me when i saw the kid standing and trying to straighten his bicycle. So we asked him if he was ok... he said it was ok except for a few scratches on his leg.... initially, he did not want to go hospital but his family came down one by one and insisted he go do a checkup so we sent him to cgh and waited till 10.... Before moving on to the hospital, I managed to consult a fren and made him sign a memo saying he was at fault. The kid was sorry for barging across like that. He was on his mp3 player and obviously did not look to his left. He said it started raining and he did not wanna his mp3 player(hp with no sim) to get wet. Dunno this one is called heng or suay [sweatdrop]

  11. Sep 5, 2008 LTA may review plan on ERP gantries By Christopher Tan SENIOR CORRESPONDENT THE six additional electronic road-pricing (ERP) gantries slated to come online in November may not be activated at once, said Transport Minister Raymond Lim on Friday. Mr Lim, speaking at a Press Club luncheon, said traffic flow on several roads in the city has improved since the Land Transport Authority unveiled a slew of ERP changes in July. 'If this is sustained, then LTA will be happy to review the plan,' the Minister said. 'It may then need to put up only a few gantries rather than all six.' The new gantries are on Commonwealth Avenue, Jalan Bukit Merah, Serangoon Road, Alexandra Road, Ayer Rajah Expressway (westbound near Alexandra Road) and Pan-Island Expressway (westbound near Eunos). They were among two dozen or so gantries added to Singapore roads this year. Although the gantries have been built, not all have been switched on. In places where they are up and running, the impact has been noticeable. Five new ones along the Singapore River, along with extended operating hours for others, have improved travelling speeds in the city. Motorists who had been bracing themselves for the six new gantries are keeping their fingers crossed. http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_275568.html aiya. install liaoz mai activate? mike as well just tear down. waste $$. white elephant...
  12. I was out of Eng Neo from PIE stopped right infront of the u turning corner red liht waiting to enter Bt Timah road and subsequently into Sixth Ave. One big F****** dump truck was also stopping on my right in front of the traffic light wanting to go into Sixth Ave as well. Do u know why I know he wants to go into Sixth Ave? bcos the moment the red light turned green, the F****** uncle disregard my existence and even before I can release my right foot from my brake, he simply swerve himself into my lane and cross in front of me! luckily, the back bumper of his F****** truck is lucky to be high enough to have only bang into my right wing mirror crossing above my bonnet. I immediately horned him but it seemed that he did not noticed his bloody F****** backside kena me and still want to proceed! I horned & horned until somebody might have alerted him to stop...not enough, even before I can stop and alight from my car, he still want to run again! I was soooo F****** angry with him that I gave him a BIG scolding until he apologised like his urine wanting to come out. However he was lucky that I am still alive! and best of all, my conti is still a conti, no scratches at all, he was lucky though, if not i will make sure he make a hole out of his wallet! Just imagine that if he were to swerve out an inch or so nearer, my destination yesterday would be a different place! Guys, such an ignorant driver don't need speed to be bad, be very careful on the road, especially next to, behind or in front of big vehicles, they have a lot of blind spots!
