All who joined us at the latest Mycarforum hangout with Zeekr got to learn more about the leading safety features and design elements of the new Zeekr X! Shopping for a new electric crossover is fast becoming a difficult task: It seems as if a new option is entering our market every other week. But the lucky few who joined us on the evening of 27 February 2025 should have an easier time picking out their next car. This latest iteration of the Mycarforum hangout saw a total of 39 Mycarforum members joining us to get to better know the Zeekr X. For those still unfamiliar with the Zeekr brand, here's a little introduction: Officially launched in Singapore in August 2024, the brand has since opened its local showroom (its 500th globally) in November 2024 and now offers the Zeekr X electric crossover alongside the 009 electric MPV here. And it was the former that took centre stage at this latest hangout event (although attendees were welcome to test drive both cars). Available here in two different variants, the Zeekr X can be had with an astonishing total of 422bhp, or, for the more practically minded, a 268bhp output. But those present with us in the evening also got to experience first-hand the crossover's wide sweep of features, including its voice-operated virtual assistant and its premium cabin, which comes complete with a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, and its host of metallic rose gold trim, on top of its nifty in-cabin refrigerator/heater. And there was more in store than just getting a feel of the cars in the showroom. Mr McMenamin, Sales Manager of Zeekr Singapore, was also ready to offer all present a rundown of the history of the Zeekr brand, the various design choices that contributed to the stunning body of the X, and to highlight the car’s various safety features that contributed to its five-star safety rating at the Euro NCAP tests. Our very own Editor, Mr Desmond Chan, then shared some of his own personal highlights after having driven the Zeekr X, and this was followed by an equally informative talk from charging provider Charge+ about the firm's plans to build a charging network that stretches all the way from Singapore to Vietnam. Attendees to this latest Mycarforum hangout event with Omoda got up close to the E5 and Jaecoo J7 and got a few tips on driving an electric car in Malaysia. It may have been close to a month since we visited the Skoda Kodiaq, but our Mycarforum members clearly could not get enough of the opportunity to explore new cars. At least, that's what the turnout at the latest Mycarforum hangout suggested! This new hangout session saw more than 30 of our members heading down to the new Omoda showroom to pay a visit and get to know the all-electric E5. These members got to get up close with the car and explore its distinctive features including its 24.6-inch curved screen, Sony eight-speaker sound system, as well as its eye-catching exterior design which comes complete with a distinctive spoiler at the rear. But that was not all that was on offer. Beyond simply learning more about the E5, attendees at this event also got the opportunity to learn more about how to best take their electric cars into Malaysia, just as families across Singapore prepare for the December holidays. From advice on how to eke out the greatest energy economy from their electric cars to the suggested charging stops and charging providers to utilise, attendees got to know what the best practices were to ensure a smooth drive and trouble-free charging experience when in Malaysia. And there was more in store still. Those who attended this handout session not only got to test drive the E5 but were also amongst the first in Singapore to get to see and test drive the new Jaecoo J7 plug-in hybrid. All who joined us at the latest Mycarforum hangout with the Smart #1 got the chance to learn more about one of newest brands to officially enter Singapore. After visiting the Lexus LBX in May, Mycarforum has now visited yet another crossover also perfect for taking on Singapore's streets! This time, we visited the new Smart #1, in both its 'Pro+' and 'Brabus' variants, at a swanky new pop-up showroom, located at 209 Pandan Gardens Road. This new space is set to serve as the temporary home for the newly-arrived-in-Singapore Smart brand until renovation work is completed at its permanent showroom located at level 3 of Mercedes-Benz Centre. If you're unfamiliar with the cars, here's a quick low-down on them: Sales of the all-electric Smart #1 kicked off here in Singapore only in April of 2024. The Smart #1 in its 'Pro+' variant comes with a total of 268bhp alongside a 66kWh battery, which allows you to cover a claimed 420km before its battery goes flat. The Smart #1 'Brabus', meanwhile, will please those looking for a bit more zest in their daily commute. Offering a total of 422bhp, this electric crossover will complete the century sprint in just 3.9 seconds. All this is made possible thanks to a battery which offers the same 66kWh capacity as the Smart #1 Pro+, but the greater energy consumption of the Brabus means you’ll be able to cover close to 400km before you'll need to plug the car back to a charger. And if they look a little familiar, there's a fair chance you're already seen them (other than here on Sgcarmart, that is). The cars have already visited locations including VivoCity, Jewel at Changi Airport, and Waterway point in a host of roadshows organised by Smart itself. The morning's Mycarforum hangout, however, is designed to give those interested in the cars the opportunity to get to know them better in a more exclusive setting. Those attending not only managed to catch some of the impressions of the Smart #1 from our own Editorial Manager, Mr. Desmond Chan, but also got a more comprehensive guide through the history of the Smart brand as well as the features of the cars themselves from Mr. Christopher Thenadi, Head of Operations for Smart at Cycle & Carriage Singapore. Getting to know the Lexus LBX was just one part of a nail biting evening of our latest Mycarforum hangout event! Nearly two months after heading to Shaw Plaza to catch Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia, our Mycarforum members were once again treated to an exclusive look at Lexus' new LBX right from the firm's showroom at 33 Leng Kee Road! Held on 9 May 2024, the event saw close to 50 attendees all getting the opportunity to get up close and personal with Lexus' first Cat A COE-eligible crossover. For those curious, the Lexus LBX comes to Singapore equipped with a hybrid drivetrain that makes use of a 1.5-litre engine, and develops a total of 129bhp alongside a peak torque of 185Nm. These figures allow the crossover to complete the century sprint from zero to 100km/h in just 9.6 seconds. But of course, numbers don't tell the whole story. What also matters is how a car makes you feel when you're on the road and behind the wheel. And that's exactly how Julian described his time with the crossover - after having driven the car in Valencia, Spain - to those that attended this exclusive Mycarforum hangout event! Still, that was not all that happened that evening. Those interested in the rest of Lexus' range also got chances to test drive other self-charging hybrid models from the brand, which included the likes of the IS Hybrid, the ES Sedan, and the NX SUV. While all this was happening, those waiting in the showroom were also engaged not just in food and drinks, but with a competition which saw them scanning a host of QR codes placed all throughout the two display units of the LBX. Those who took part in the competition were able to answer a selection of 10 fun-fact questions regarding the Lexus LBX after scanning these QR codes, with the one answering the most number of questions correctly getting to walk away from the event with a prize valued at $1,999! As it turned out, we did in fact underestimate the know-how of our Mycarforum members, as there was a tie between not just two, but three members in total. Competition for the prize was then settled with a tie breaker which required all to answer one final question regarding the LBX in a final, nerve-wrecking end to the evening! Over 30 MCF members with their loved ones arrived at the Subaru showroom in Leng Kee last Saturday, in the latest edition of MCF Hangout in partnership with Motul and Subaru. The hangout with French lubricant brand Motul and Subaru isn’t a random occurrence. Motul and Motor Image, exclusive distributor of Subaru cars in Singapore, has held a partnership for many years. In 2008, Motul, along with Motor Image Rally Team (MIRT) developed the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) Team Racing Oil. 100% fully synthetic, the APRC Team Racing Oil is specially made for MIRT’s cars racing in hot Asian climates. Just earlier this year, Motul and Motor Image announced that it will supply an exclusive line of lubricant products to its customers. Developed in Japan, the new Subaru engine oils by Motul are specially tailored for the brand’s boxer engines. MCF members also got a chance to learn more about Subaru’s range of cars on offer, as well as Subaru’s EyeSight safety assistance systems at the event, too. Member of the Editorial team at sgCarMart, Idris Talib, shared his experience using Motul’s 5W-30 engine oil for his Subaru Forester XT after a service at Motor Image. Idris mentioned that he was previously running 5W-40 oil, based on recommendations from friends and workshop owners. “Many have told me to use 5W-40, as turbocharged engines run hotter and require thicker oil. Over 40 MyCarForum (MCF) members gathered at the INFINITI showroom on Leng Kee Road last Saturday, to get up close and personal with the new INFINITI All-New QX50. Particularly unique about the All-New QX50 is that it offers INFINITI’s VC-Turbo engine, the world’s first variable compression engine in a mass production car. To get MCF members to know more, Isaac Tan, Product Specialist of INFINITI, was on hand to chat a little bit more on how it all works, including sharing about its other advanced features such as its Active Torque Rod vibration cancelling engine mounts, and the All-New QX50’s safety assistance features. Idris Talib, from sgCarMart’s Editorial Team, also shared his experience driving the INFINITI QX50, and how it fares against other mid-sized SUVs in the market. Aside from checking out the QX50 and the rest of the range INFINITI has to offer, MCF members at the event also stood a chance to win attractive lucky draw prizes. MCF members also checked out the QX80, a large SUV with a lot of road presence. The most modern technology used in internal combustion engines currently is Variable compression ratio engine ( VCR ). As the name suggests, the motor may alter the compression ratio under operating circumstances. The technology had existed as a prototype for the previous few years. Currently, Infiniti (the luxury brand of Nissan) is prepared to display its VCR engine, the first ready-to-produce VCR engine, to be exhibited in the 2016 Paris Motor Show. 2016 Paris Motor Show by Maxime Joly, on Flickr Why need a VCR engine? Generally, a traditional petrol engine makes more power from a specified engine size using a turbocharger. In a Diesel engine, Turbocharging's approach looks excellent, as they operate heterogeneously injecting more fuel into denser air. On the other hand, petrol engines do not have the flexibility like diesel engines; a petrol engine's mixing power impacts engine efficiency. Detonation and knocking prevail when the turbocharger boosts over specific concentrations as the general compression ratio rises (piston compress + turbo-added pressure).The first solution to the issue may be to use a reduced engine compression ratio so that more dense air can deliver to the turbo. However, the downside is that lowering the percentage of compression can affect the economy of petrol. Hence the designer must trade-off some Compression ratio for power and rest for the economy. A variable compression ratio engine The main characteristic of the engine is to use a compression ratio of 14 at the lower throttle and low speeds while cruising. So you can achieve the highest fuel economy. The compression ratio of the cylinder falls to about 8:1 during acceleration or high-velocity acceleration, this is also the case when the turbo kicks in. Turbo, therefore, rams more air into the engine, making it more powerful. Infiniti patented such systems at the end of 2001. It is also possible to operate the VC-T (Variable Compression Turbo) motor on Atkinson cycles. Currently, the VC-Turbo engine is paired in INFINITI QX50, a luxury compact SUV that can rival the likes of Lexus NX, Volvo XC40 and Mercedes Benz GLC. Over 60 MyCarForum (MCF) members, together with their partners and families, gathered at Singapore Recreation Club on Saturday afternoon to attend the MCF Hangout with Follow Me Japan. The event, a unique collaboration between sgCarMart and FMJ, offered MCF members insights into the many interesting sights and attractions in Ishikawa, Japan. During the event, sgCarMart Senior Automotive Journalist Desmond Chan spoke about some of his personal experiences driving overseas, as well as some key tips on how to best plan and enjoy a road trip. He also briefly touched on some of the unique road conditions and peculiarities when it comes to driving in Japan. Additionally, Mr. Yuta Abe from FMJ also presented on the many unique attractions that Ishikawa offers. Ishikawa Prefecture, located 500km away from Tokyo, is bordered on three sides by the Sea of Japan, and by Mt. Hakusan on the fourth. This allows visitors to enjoy the best of both mountainous and sea-facing scenery. Ishikawa is especially beautiful in the Autumn, with bountiful harvests making for delectable cuisine, and spectacular scenery thanks to beautiful natural sights. Ms. Mandy Tay, an award-winning photographer, also shared with MCF members her experience travelling in Ishikawa. She shared some of her culinary highlights, such as incredibly fresh oysters, as well as the ample hospitality and kindness of the people of Japan. Over 60 MyCarForum (MCF) members gathered at CoSpace Park, at Science Park Road to attend the latest MCF Hangout with Jetabout Holidays. The event proved to be a learning opportunity to MCF members who want to head for self-drive holidays and tours in Tasmania. Jetabout Holidays is an established travel agency that provides various well-priced and all inclusive tour packages that include self-drives and group tours in and around Tasmania. For self-drive packages, it includes vehicle rental, too. Tasmania is known for its beautiful landscapes. Despite being Australia’s smallest state, it is geographically diverse with over 40% of land area reserved for national parks and wilderness areas. MCF members who attended the event also received goodie bags from Jetabout Holidays, and one lucky draw winner walked away with a $200 travel voucher. sgCarMart Deputy Editor, Nigel Yong, was on hand to share his thoughts on driving overseas. As shared by Nigel, a Singapore driving licence is recognised in Australia. For other types of driving licences, as long as the driving licence is in English and you have over a year of driving experience, it will be recognised. According to Nigel, driving in Australia is very similar to Singapore, and drivers are courteous. But he did mention that speed limits, as well as the usage of seat belts for drivers and passengers are regularly enforced. During the event, Jansen Chua, Associate Instructor at the Canon Imaging Academy, also shared some tips on how to capture great photos. During the last Tasmania self-drive trip, holiday makers managed to capture a glimpse of the Southern Lights. Fiona Lee from Tourism Tasmania was also on hand to share more on what one can expect from Tasmania's vast geographical diversity. The event ended off with a food tasting experience. MCF members had a chance to taste food and drinks that is unique to the region, like Tasmanian Leatherwood Honey.
