Finding an old used car, whether in a storage building or a junkyard, is something normal nowadays, especially in big countries such as the United States. But to find a Mercedes-Benz 300SL, now that is a real treasure find. A Mercedes-Benz 300SL, also known as the Mercedes Gullwing, was found in a rat-infested garage in California, USA and it is no ordinary 300SL. This particular car was once belonged to Tom Wellmer. His parents bought him this 1955 car as a present for his college graduation. Mr. Wellmer used it until its transmission gave way and he parked it in a garage, back in 1971. That was forty years ago. Today, he has finally let go of the car which he intended to fix up many years ago. The car has now been sent to a Canadian Mercedes Gullwing restoration expert, Rudi and Company. The restoration company owner, Mr. Rudi Koniczek, intends to restore it back to its original state before handing it over to the new owner, just like how Tom Wellmar received it many years ago. As gorgeous as it already is, the Mercedes SLS AMG is going to look even better with its convertible version. With the top down, the SLS looks even more appropriate as a bedroom wall pin-up or a high roller's car parked outside a casino in Monte Carlo. It tells the world that you don't really care whether you have gull-winged doors or not and that you probably look better than the car. And egoistical statement in other words. This version is for the man who treats this amazing work of engineering art as an accessory, it complements his looks and isn't afraid to flaunt it. Underneath, you get the same 6.2litre V8 with the twin clutch gear box, so you wouldn't have to worry about it being slow. The only worry will come if you're planning to thrash this round a track because it probably will be a little wobbly after taking the roof off. But then again, this car is equivalent to the poseur's expensive watch; fantastic, but just for show really.. Instead of the usual metal folding roofs that most convertibles have these days, Mercedes have decided to go with the soft top. This is mainly to keep its weight down. I actually prefer the look of the soft top, I think it adds a more classic feel to the car. Anyway, this version will probably only be out in 2012 but will be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show around mid-September in 2011. [photos courtesy of autoexpress]

Yesterday at Clementi Ave 3, I saw a Titanium Grey Celica parked at Blk 456. Very chio with bodykit but what strikes me is that the doors open upwards, gullwing doors! Wonder where he did it and is it approved?
