I just bought some gala apples from Sheng Siong, label is like french apples, but cannot find such labels online..LOL BERA - Malaysia has stopped the import of two brands of apples from California because of fears that they could be tainted with the Listeriosis bacteria, reported Malaysian media. Agriculture minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the ministry had received a notice from the US authorities that the Gala red apples and Granny Smith green apples from California were suspected to be contaminated with the bacteria, reported New Straits Times. "The ministry will stop the import of the affected apples while the Health Ministry will check those already in the local market," he said on Saturday. He added that his ministry had no jurisdiction to recall apples that were already in Malaysia as this involved food nutrition, which is regulated by the Health Ministry. Malaysia's Health Ministry said it had conducted tests on the apples from California-based Bidart Bros at all entry points in Malaysia. The ministry's director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry had identified two importers of the apples in Malaysia, and had directed them to recall the apples. Consumption of food tainted with the bacteria could cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea and in severe cases, death. The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore told Zaobao in comments published on Sunday that Singapore does not import the affected batches of apples from the US. In Thailand, local authorities have already seized a shipment of US apples from the 2014 harvest, and health officials are examining shipments at agriculture shipment checkpoints in the country, the Bangkok Post reported. The Philippines, too, has issued advisories recalling imported Gala and Granny Smith apples from the US, reported Xinhua news agency. Bidart Bros said the last shipment date of the affected apples was on Dec 2, reported Los Angeles Times. The affected apples were sold under the names Big Big and Granny’s Best, but the company says they could also be sold under other brand names, or with no name. Consumers were being advised to ask fruit sellers if their Granny Smith or Gala apples came from Bidart Bros. The US Food and Drug Administration found two strains of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that causes listeriosis, at the company's processing plant in Bakersfield. It has determined that the plant was a supplier of the contaminated apples used to make the affected caramel apples, reported Los Angeles Times. SKorean granny fails driving test 771 times SEOUL (AFP) - - A dogged South Korean grandmother has failed her driving test 771 times, police said Thursday, but a local newspaper reported she will keep trying. The 68-year-old, identified only by her last name Cha, has taken the test almost every working day since 2005 in the southwestern city of Jeonju. She failed again Monday for the 771st time. "It was a record-breaking number here," Choi Yong-Cheol, a police sergeant supervising the test in the city's Deokjingu district, told AFP. "I wonder if she will try it again for a 772nd time." The Korea Times said Cha will in fact be back for another attempt. Choi said that Cha cannot pass the preliminary written section of the test, averaging scores of 30-50 whereas the pass mark is 60 out of 100. Local media said that Cha sells food and household items door to door at apartment complexes, carrying the items in a handcart, but wants to get a car for her business. Police estimate she has spent almost five million won (3,600 dollars) to take the written test, with each test costing 6,000 won in addition to other expenses. "I feel sorry every time I see Cha fail. When she passes, I'll make a commemorative tablet myself and give it to her," one officer was quoted as saying.

And not only did the robbers outnumber her two to one, they were also armed with a wicked-looking 'Rambo' knife. But what the robbers did not count on was for this granny to give chase after they had robbed her of her handbag. In the end, one of the robbers lost his life when the motorcycle they were fleeing on skidded and crashed. The robbery attempt happened on Saturday morning when former journalist Mariah Samad was getting into her car outside her home in Petaling Jaya, reported the New Sunday Times. As she was about to leave, two men approached her on a motorcycle and politely asked her for directions. Suddenly, one of them demanded that she hand over her handbag. When Madam Mariah refused, he whipped out a knife and threatened to kill her. 'The pillion rider opened the car door and grabbed my bag,' she said. 'I started honking and screaming but no one came to my aid.' As the robbers sped off, Madam Mariah jumped into her Proton Wira and chased them right onto the Damansara-Puchong Highway. During the pursuit, Madam Mariah honked her horn furiously in the hope that someone would help stop the fleeing thieves. Two kilometres into the chase, the motorcyclist lost control of the bike and crashed into a roadside barrier. The 24-year-old pillion rider died on the spot. The rider, who was not heavily injured, managed to limp away from the accident. He then hailed a taxi and asked the driver to take him to Sungei Gelek in Klang. Suspecting that something was amiss, the taxi driver locked the doors of his vehicle and drove the robber to the Kelana Jaya police station, where the robber was arrested. The identity of the 20-year-old robber was not released by the police. While Madam Mariah was commended by the police for her actions, they have cautioned her against going after fleeing criminals because of the risks involved.
