  1. Malaysian PM Mahathir proposes new regional currency based on gold TOKYO: Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday (May 30) proposed to create a new “special currency” for the region based on gold, replacing the existing currency trading regime. Speaking at a dialogue session at the 25th International Conference on The Future of Asia (Nikkei Conference), he claimed that a regional currency based on gold would be more stable. The prime minister said that by pegging the new currency to gold, it could be used to evaluate the import and export activities among East Asian countries. “We can make settlement using that (new) currency. That currency must be pegged to the local currency as the exchange rate, which is something that can be related to the country’s performance,” he said. “That way we know how much we owe, how much we have to pay in the special currency of East Asia." The new currency could also be extended to countries outside East Asia, he said. Dr Mahathir noted that the global market is now tied to the US dollar, and this makes the currency prone to manipulation. “Just because that one country is affected, there is infection to the other countries. Malaysia was very stable way back in 1997 (during the Asian financial crisis) ... but because of the problem occurring in Thailand, they said we must peg the Malaysian currency (to the US dollar),” he recounted. “What happened? The currency traders sold the Malaysian currency and the value of Malaysian currency depreciated.” “This currency trading is not something that is healthy because it is not about the (economic) performance of countries but it is about manipulation.” When asked if the Japanese yen or Chinese yuan could be used as the common currency in the region, the prime minister replied: “If we are trying to promote our own currency, there will be conflict." “But if we have a common currency for East Asia, a common trading currency that is not used in each country but for the purpose of settlement trade only, then there will be stability,” he said. “Trying to promote the yen or the yuan is not the way to go.” US SHOULD STOP LABELLING OTHER COUNTRIES: MAHATHIR Earlier this week, the United States added Malaysia to a watchlist of trading partners for currency practices, citing its foreign exchange intervention operations. Malaysia’s central bank has refuted the claim. In a statement on Wednesday, it said the Malaysian economy remains resilient, underpinned by strong economic fundamentals, including the flexibility accorded by a floating exchange rate and strong external balance. "Malaysia supports free and fair trade, and does not practise unfair currency practices," it said. Other countries, including Singapore, China, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam were also added to the list. On Thursday, Dr Mahathir hit out at the US for “labelling countries”. “The US is fond of labelling that country is no good, this country is no good and telling countries on ways to conduct their business,” he said. “You are not democratic. That is not for any single power to decide. If you want to live in a united world, stable world, we must resort to sustainability through agreement between all nations that have a stake in that problem." 3. Gold tops US$1,600 as virus fuels growth fears source: https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/energy-commodities/gold-tops-us1600-as-virus-fuels-growth-fears [SINGAPORE] Gold traded near the highest level since 2013 on concerns over the spread of the new coronavirus and how it's impacting global growth. Palladium topped US$2,700 an ounce as it continued its record-breaking rally. Bullion steadied after surging 1.3 per cent Tuesday's as Apple Inc's warning that the virus and efforts to contain it would have its sales missing forecasts spurred a sell off in stocks. China's death toll from the disease topped 2,000, while the province at the centre of the outbreak reported fewer additional cases. The flight to safety has benefited haven assets, with the rally spilling over to the palladium market, where a multi-year deficit is expected to widen in 2020. Gold is up 5.6 per cent this year as investors assess the impact of the disease on economic growth and appetite for risk amid speculation that the Federal Reserve will feel increased pressure to reduce interest rates. The US central bank has said the effects of the virus have presented a "new risk" to the outlook and traders will study minutes from the Fed's latest meeting, due later on Wednesday, for any hint of a dovish tone. Spot gold was little changed at US$1,601.88 an ounce at 11.46am in Singapore. Prices had touched US$1,611.42 in early January, the highest since 2013, as geopolitical tensions flared. The unfolding health emergency has seen holdings in global exchange-traded funds backed by bullion expand to a record. Palladium climbed 3 per cent to US$2,709.10 an ounce, an all-time high. "A deficit equivalent to about 20 per cent of the palladium market is expected to be sustained this year, helping explain the surge in prices," said Vivek Dhar, an analyst at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Demand is being driven by environmental regulations, particularly in China, which has increased palladium use in vehicles and should offset any recent weakness in car sales, he said.

  7. Blenheim Palace set to install £1million gold toilet for visitors to use An 18-carat gold toilet has been plumbed into Blenheim Palace for visitors to use, but they’ll have to respect a strict time-limit. The lavatory, created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, will go on display at the Oxfordshire stately home in September. The fully-functioning throne will be open for public use, but a three-minute time limit will be imposed to reduce queue times. It has been placed opposite the room where Winston Churchill was born, and visitors will be able to book their time-slot in advance. There will be 20 slots an hour for art, or lav, lovers to choose from, provided they buy a £27 ticket for the palace, park and gardens. When the lavatory first opened at New York’s Guggenheim museum in 2016, it was so popular that people queued for hours to place their cheeks upon its glittering seat. Some 100,000 used it for its intended purpose, according to The Times. The piece previously made headlines in 2017 when it was offered on loan to Donald Trump. The US president had initially asked the museum to lend him an 1888 Van Gogh painting, but it rejected the request, offering Cattelan's golden masterpiece, titled ‘America’, instead. The flushable America arrived at the Marlborough family’s 300-year-old country home, last week, ready for a contemporary art exhibition that will open next month. The Duke of Marlborough’s half-brother and founder of the Blenheim Art Foundation Edward Spencer-Churchill told the Times: “Despite being born with a silver spoon in my mouth I have never had a s*** on a golden toilet, so I look forward to it.” The artwork is valued at more than £1million, but the palace appears relaxed about security. “It’s not going to be the easiest thing to nick,” Mr Spencer-Churchill said.
  8. Recently came across a very old article only that kept me think instead of putting all my money in the bank, should i turn some of my money into useful metals? Buy Silver in Singapore Lately, I have been having some bizarre interest in collecting silver coins. It just feels cool to actually own silver knowing that this used to be used as currency across history. But as a pretty newbie to silver, I won't call my purchases as investing in silver just yet. Nevertheless, I have been reading up quite a fair bit about silver coins to know how much a troy ounce actually weighs. And it is interesting to find out a whole new domain of knowledge literally about investing in silver bullion coins, using it as a hedge against inflation, etc. Well, the first thing to realise is that it is not too difficult to buy silver in Singapore. I am not talking about investing in silver through ETFs but really owning physical silver bars and coins. There are actually quite a few companies that sells silver bullion. Here are the few things that I have learnt about silver coins thus far: 1. Buy silver coins or bars that are widely recognised This seems to be the advice that people are giving in various forums. Coins widely recognised include the American Silver Eagle and the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf. There are others like the Australian Silver Kookaburra from Perth Mint and also the Austrian Silver Vienna Philharmonic. 2. Silver Coins Trade Above Spot Price One can check the spot price for silver easily on kitco or some other website. However, silver coins often trade or are sold above the spot price of silver. Even on Ebay, they trade above the spot price. Silver price has been increasing slowly. 3. Places to Buy Silver in Singapore [Grabbed this off another forum] www.1silver1.com (Website is a bit slow so need to be patient) www.silverag.com.sg www.silverbullion.com.sg www.yashabullion.com www.goldprice.com.sg www.goldsilvercentral.com.sg www.royalsmithbullion.com Many of these shops have a minimum order (e.g. 20 x 1 oz coins) or a minimum purchase of $2000. Some of them have minimum orders of 500 oz and based on today's price of silver, will literally cost you a 20 over grand (estimated $48++ for a 1 oz silver coin). So you really have to be serious about it before making a purchase. The first link actually allows customers to buy 1 oz silver bar as a minimum order. But it is a Scottsdale silver bar and I am not certain that it is as widely recognised as the other silver coins. 4. Buying off Ebay If you prefer to buy loose pieces, you can always buy them off Ebay. However, prices are slightly higher when you do not buy in bulk. Many sellers also do not ship to Singapore. Sources: http://sgfinancialfreedom.blogspot.sg/2011/12/buy-silver-in-singapore.html Anyone have any experiences to share for buying bullion?

http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/south-asia/man-arriving-from-singapore-arrested-at-sri-lanka-airport-for-smuggling-gold-bars-in A 42-year-old man was arrested at an airport in Sri Lanka on Tuesday (Dec 22) for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars hidden in his rectum. Customs officers at Bandaranaike International Airport had taken note that he was walking suspiciously, and subsequently conducted a search, reported the BBC. Four gold slabs, weighing a total of 400g, were found inside the suspect's rectal cavity. They were valued at about 2 million Sri Lankan rupees (S$19,558). According to Sri Lankan newspaper The Nation, the suspect had arrived on an early morning flight from Singapore. He allegedly claimed that he worked for Sri Lanka's Ministry of Post, Postal Services and Muslim Religious Affairs after being taken into custody. Airport officials told the BBC that more than 70 people have been arrested this year for attempting to smuggle gold into Sri Lanka. The smugglers' modus operandi involves buying the precious metal in cities such as Dubai and Singapore - where it is cheaper and there are fewer trade restrictions - and selling them in India. India is the world's largest gold consumer, with a total consumption of 642 tonnes in the first nine months of 2015. Its import duty for gold, pegged at 10 per cent for a 100g bar, is high. While smugglers risk a jail term of up to seven years, the penalty is considered uncommon and the main deterrent normally involves confiscating the gold.

    Gold smuggling

Any thoughts on this? 27kg of gold is a lot. Shouldn't there be a limit here? If you have to declare how much money you have, then why not gold? http://www.theonlinecitizen.com/2015/04/nk-envoys-gold-smuggling-no-lapse-at-changi-airport-says-minister/ NK envoy’s gold smuggling – no lapse at Changi Airport, says minister April 15, 2015by andrewlow in News · 3 Comments Second Minister for Home Affairs S. Iswaran told Parliament on Tuesday that there were no security lapses in the case of a North Korean diplomat who had apparently carried some 27kg of gold bars through Changi Airport and onto a flight to Dhaka, Bangladesh. The incident took place in March this year. Mr Iswaran was replying to a question posed by non-constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP), Gerald Giam, of the Workers’ Party (WP). Mr Giam had asked what was the weight limit on the transport of gold and other precious metals in and out of Singapore by individual travellers, and if diplomats are exempt from this limit. And referring to the case of the diplomat, Mr Giam asked what measures are in place to ensure that diplomats do not abuse their diplomatic immunity to carry precious metals, drugs or weapons in and out of Singapore in their luggage. Son Young-Nam, the first secretary at the North Korean embassy in Dhaka, had departed on a flight from Changi, where he was screened before boarding. “No security threat items were found on him,” local news in Singapore reported. Mr Son was stopped when he arrived at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalam International Airport. Rashidul Islam Khan, commanding officer of the airport’s armed police battalion, said the diplomat was passing through the “nothing to declare” channel in customs when an official asked to scan his carry-on luggage. But Mr Son refused to allow customs officers and police to examine his bags. “He insisted that his bags cannot be scanned because he’s carrying a red passport and he enjoys diplomatic immunity,” Moinul Khan, head of Bangladesh’s customs intelligence department told AFP. “After more than four hours of drama, he gave in and we found gold bars and gold ornaments weighing 26.795kg (59lb), which is worth 130 million taka ($1.67m, £1.1m),” he added. Mr Khan said the diplomat admitted under questioning that he was carrying the gold illegally. The gold is reported to be worth some US$1.4 million. Bangladesh has a limit of 2kg which can be allowed into the country by individuals. Mr Khan added: “It’s a clear case of smuggling. We believe he would have sold the gold to a local criminal racket. He is being used as a carrier.” The Bangladesh government summoned North Korean Ambassador Ri Song Hyon on Monday and gave him a 72-hour deadline to send the diplomat home, the Associated Press news agency reported. “We told the ambassador to prosecute him in North Korea and update us about the action to be taken against him,” Mohammad Shahidul Haque, the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry secretary, told Reuters. “We conveyed to him that the government would take serious action if any embassy official is found to be involved in any crimes in future.” IswaranMr Iswaran said diplomats, just like other travellers, are screened before they board the planes at Singapore’s Changi Airport. “This involves the use of metal detectors for checks on persons and X-ray screening for their belongings,” the Straits Times reported Mr Iswaran as having said. In the event of a suspicion of a security threat, the authorities “are not constrained from making the appropriate checks on the items a diplomat carries.” As for Mr Giam’s question about limits to the amount of gold and precious metals allowed to be transport in and out of Singapore, Mr Iswaran said there are no weight limits on these. Straits Times“The member should also be aware that it is not uncommon, especially for travellers to certain parts of the world, to carry what you and I might consider not insignificant amounts of gold on their person or in their personal baggage,” the minister said. “If they are able to give a clear explanation that these are their personal effects or for personal consumption purposes, generally they would be allowed to carry on with their travel with those items.” In the meantime, sources have said Mr Son was released by the Bangladesh authorities under the Vienna Convention which grants immunity to diplomats. He is also reported to have left Bangladesh for North Korea.
